There is need for secondary school students to leverage technology to achieve success in the West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, a seasoned management, marketing, and education-sector professional, Mr. Gbenga Ogunleye, has advised.

Ogunleye who is the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Toga Royal Nigeria Limited, made the call on Wednesday at the seminar organised by LABASCO Old Students Association for students of the Lagos Baptist Senior Secondary School, Orile Agege, Lagos.

The event which had the president of 1984 set of LABASCO Old Students Association, Mr. Benjamin Akindele Ojo, as coordinator was the second in a series and designed to prepare Senior Secondary School 3 students for WASSCE.

Ogunleye who was the Guest Speaker, spoke on the topic, “Using Technology the Right Way to Pass WASSCE.”

He stressed that success in the final year examination would belong to students who combined hard work with intelligent use of technology.

He posited that although almost all the students in secondary schools had access to smart phones, they had not been using technology wisely as they concentrated more on social media contents not helpful to their success in examinations.

He said rather than access past questions and other education materials, they deployed the smart phones to other things, thus causing distraction.

Urging them to use it to practise past questions daily, understand difficult concepts and identify learning weaknesses early, he warned that technology amplified discipline, but did not replace it.

His words: “Today, examination success is no longer determined only by classroom teaching or hours spent reading. Around the world, outcomes are increasingly shaped by access to digital learning tools, intelligent revision systems, and technology-supported teaching methods.

“The central question is no longer whether students should use technology. The real question is: are we using technology strategically enough to improve learning outcomes?”

The guest speaker called on the students to combine hard work with intelligent use of technology as represented by their smart phones to achieve success in their examinations.

Ogunleye also spoke on the need for governments, parents and communities to provide the necessary support for the success of the students.

“If government provides infrastructure, educators provide mentorship, parents provide discipline, and communities provide support, then examination excellence will become predictable — not accidental.

“Let us commit today to building not just smart classrooms, but smart learners prepared for examinations, innovation, and leadership,” he declared.

The event which was well attended by parents, staff and old students was chaired by the Chairman, Orile Agege Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Mr. Akinola Abiodun Idowu.

The LCDA boss, at the occasion, announced plans by his administration to build a Computer Based Test Centre in Lagos Baptist Senior Secondary School, Orile Agege, Lagos, within the next one year.

According to him, the facility will be of 250 systems minimum capacity and will be supplied with internet.

The organisers enjoyed the support of the Principal of the school, Mrs. Modupe Shofela, teachers and non-teaching staff of the school.

The seminar with the theme, “Empowering Minds for a Transformed Future: The Legacy of Learning and Leadership,” featured presentation of papers by different resource persons who are old students of the school.

The first speaker, Muhammad Quieyaz Adebayo, spoke on the topic, “Beyond WAEC: Character That Secures Your Future”; the second resource person, Mr. Yinka Sonuga spoke on “Integrity in Examination: Choosing the Right Path”; the third resource person, Mrs. Funsho Fakorede, spoke on “The Influence of Parents and Guardians on WAEC Success” while the fourth resource person, Mr. Ademola Abiodun, spoke on “Peer Review, Not Peer Distraction: The Smart Path to WAEC Success”.

The Master of Ceremony was an old student and renowned medical practitioner, Dr Aina Olufemi Odusola, while renowned journalist, Publisher of FrontPage, a leading online newspaper, Mr. Sakibu Olokojobi, gave the vote of thanks at the occasion.

Benjamin Akindele is a man of many parts. An astute politician in Alimoso local government area of Lagos State, he is the South West zone administrator of the leading opposition party, People’s Democratic Party, PDP. A businessman of repute, he is also among other things, the president of the 1984 set of the old students of Lagos Baptist Secondary School, LABASCO, Orile Agege, Lagos. Little wonder therefore that although his birthday is May 12, the celebration went on for days as he was celebrated by different groups. For instance, while his political associates and members of the Egbe Omo Adugbo Egbeda celebrated him on May 12, another bash was held on Saturday, May 17, at his residence and attended largely by members of the 1984 set of LABASCO old students, friends and well-wishers.

Images show the faces at the Saturday event:

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in Lagos State, Mr. Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, has applauded a teacher at Lagos Baptist Senior College, LABASCO, Mrs. Temitope Ramota Balogun (nee Gbajabiamila), for single-handedly constructing a two-cubicle students’ toilet in the school.

Alli-Balogun gave the applause on Tuesday at the inauguration of the toilet in Orile Agege, Lagos.

The commissioner described the teacher as a source of inspiration, demonstrating the power of action over words.

He said the remarkable feat was a reminder that a true leader always seeks to lift others up.

The commissioner said with the project, Balogun had touched all and that her work would inspire future generations to act with kindness, responsibility, empathy and care.

“You have proven that leadership comes in all forms and that no act of service is too small to make a profound difference.

“As we officially commission this toilet today, let it be a reminder to us all that each of us, no matter our role or position, has the power to change the world around us.

“This facility will continue to stand as a tribute to your vision, your hard work, and your unwavering dedication to improving the lives of our students.”

The commissioner said the occasion was to actually celebrate the gesture that embodied the very essence of leadership, selflessness, dedication, passion, empathy and unparalleled commitment to the well-being of our students.

“Before us stands not just a-two cubicle students’ toilet – that is not just a facility; it is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our educators to the well-being and education of our students. It is an expression of an incredible heart and dedication of an individual who has gone above and beyond, who took it upon herself to bring a much-needed solution to our school community,” he said.

“This toilet was built by a teacher —one who not only educates with passion but also leads by example. One who, despite the fact that she is a teacher, recognized a need and chose to act. This teacher has demonstrated that leadership is not defined by titles or rank, but by the willingness to serve and make a tangible difference.

“In a world where many look to others to fix problems, this teacher looked inward and said, “I will be the change.” She saw an opportunity to improve the lives of our students, and without hesitation, she stepped up to make that vision a reality.

“The building of this toilet is not just a physical structure —it is a symbol of care, compassion, commitment and empathy to the dignity of every student who will use it. It reflects the kind of teacher this institution is so fortunate to have—someone who understands that education is not limited to textbooks and exams, but extends to nurturing an environment where every student can feel safe, respected, and cared for.”

The teacher, Mrs. Balogun, speaking at the occasion expressed joy over the successful completion of the project, giving gratitude to God and everyone that supported her in one way or the other.

Her words: “With a heart full of gratitude and joy for today’s event, I must say it was nothing short of a success, and I owe this massive and giant stride achievement to God almighty and the incredible, invaluable support and presence of everyone who has contributed positively to this great project.”

She said the event had reaffirmed her belief “that when we work together, no contribution is too small, no dream too far.”

She prayed: “May this be the first of many impactful projects that will uplift the educational experience in our school.”

The medical outreach for old students of Lagos Baptist Secondary School, LABASCO, Orile Agege, Lagos, holds today.

Hosted by old students of 1980 to 1990 sets it kicked off at exactly 7.30 a.m.

Venue is the school premises – Lagos Baptist Secondary School, Orile Agege, Lagos.

The health programme covers areas such as Cervical Cancer Screening for Women; Prostate Cancer Screening for Men; Family Planning and Reproductive Health and Diabetes Screening and Treatment.

Other areas covered are Hypertension Screening and Treatment; Malaria Screening and Treatment and Eye (Vision) Screening and Glasses.

FrontPage reports that all the personnel for the exercise were sourced from the old students association.

Speaking ahead of the exercise, one of the top medical practitioners on duty, Dr. Aina Odusola, emphasized the importance of good health and need to ensure it.

He said apart from the screening and treatment, the old students would be empowered with knowledge on how to ensure good health.

His words: “As the saying goes: Health is Wealth. Furthermore, knowledge is power, and the elimination of undue ignorance and negligence is an empowerment for us to take charge of our health, avoid avoidable ill-health conditions including the silent killers and live positively with unavoidable ones where diagnosed.

“Through the implementation of this project, we will screen for and empower ourselves with knowledge on how to stay healthy as we grow older and to avoid falling victims of dangerous acute and chronic diseases including cancers, mental health issues and heart and blood vessels diseases among others.

“Apart from physical screening for potential and hidden diseases so they can be nipped in the bud if by chance detected, there will also be health training, seminars and lectures on various health topics to enlighten and empower us.

“For the health training and seminars, apart from physical delivery some of these health talks when we gather together at the school premises on the 26th of April, we will also largely exploit digital health technology by deploying our mobile phones to link up effortlessly to these empowering talk series to be delivered by health experts from various fields at various convenient times based on pre announced schedules over the next weeks. It’s simple and easy. All we need to do is get data on our phones and link up at appropriate time and dates through the provided links, listen attentively to the talk, get enlightened and participate actively afterwards by asking any necessary questions for clarifications.”

He encouraged all the old students “to take advantage of this novel and noble healthcare delivery initiative and get empowered to take charge of our health moving forward.”

He added: “Quite some efforts including significant expenditure of time, human, financial and material resources are put into the implementation of this project.

“Please let us justify these efforts and means and maximise the potential gains by taking due advantage of this innovative opportunity.”

FrontPage reports that all the personnel for the exercise were sourced from the old students association.

Speaking ahead of the exercise, one of the top medical practitioners to be on duty, Dr.

Lagos State government has charged the leadership of schools in the state to explore the abundant opportunities their old students association can provide to support government’s efforts in the provision of infrastructure and conducive learning environment.

The government made the call just as it commended the old students association of Lagos Baptist Secondary Schoool, LABASCO, for its consistent support of the alma mater.

The latest in a series of interventions by the alumni in Lagos Baptist Senior Secondary School, LBSS, is a special seminar for Senior Secondary School 3, SSS3, students, the teachers and parents.

The well-attended seminar was held on Thursday at the school premises to sensitise students, teachers and parents ahead of the coming West African Secondary School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, and other related ones.

The state government was represented by the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District 1, Prince Adebowale Adeoye Bashir.

Speaking at the occasion on behalf of the Tutor General, the Director and Head of Unit Examinations, Mr. Sanni Olakunle Taiwo, expressed gratitude over the unrelenting support the school had enjoyed from the old students.

He said it was indeed remarkable that the old students were conscious of the fact that the government alone could not provide everything required for maximum functioning of schools.

While giving assurance of the commitment of the state government to continue to improve the level of education in all ways, its priority, the Tutor General urged the old students not to rest on their oars.

The principal of the school, Mrs. Modupe Shofela, who was highly excited expressed gratitude to the old students, declaring that the school was very fortunate to have them.

According to her, the commitment of the old students to give back to their alma mater was exemplary.

Mr. Akindele, Benjamin Ojo of the 1984 set, who chaired the seminar organising committee, disclosed that the essence of the event was to challenge the students, parents and teachers ahead of the coming examination.

His words: “We were dismayed when our alma mater was red-lagged by WAEC due to examination malpractices. It was a low moment for us as ex-students, and we promised to get involved and return the school to its glorious past.”

Old students of Lagos Baptist Secondary School, Orile Agege, Lagos, have launched a campaign to ensure the return of the school to the old order whereby it is made up of both junior and senior secondary schools.

At present, the school is made up of Lagos Baptist Senior Secondary School, Orile Agege, and Lagos Baptist Senior College, Orile Agege, Lagos.

This is opposed to the old form where the school is one, with junior and secondary school together in one premises.

Tagged “Give us back our school,” the old students largely made up of the 1982 and 1984 sets chose the recent inauguration of the multi-million Naira interlocking of the assembly ground of the school carried out by old students in the Diaspora, to launch the campaign.

Present at the occasion among other officials of the education district to which the school belongs is Tutor General of District 1, Prince Bashir Adebowale.

Launching the campaign, the president of the 1984 set of the old students, Mr. Benjamin Akindele, called on the state government to restore the old order.

According to him, the Lagos Baptist Secondary School, Orile Agege, that the old students attended was made up of both junior and secondary school and not two separate senior secondary schools housed in the same premises.

Addressing the state government represented by the Tutor General of District 1, Prince Bashir Adebowale, Akindele declared that the school was already being decimated through the cancellation of the junior secondary school, thus restricting the support the old students wanted to give.

READ ALSO: Tinubu’s tax reform bills, the rich and state governors

He therefore called on the state government to bring back the junior secondary school and put an end to the destruction of the order which they, as students, passed through.

His words: “Give us back our school. What happened to the original setting which had the junior and secondary school as one? The school, as it is presently constituted, is not our school! We want our school back. Give us back our school.”

Returning the school to the old form, Akindele emphasized, would give enough room for the old students to carry out the necessary interventions needed to make the school better.

Responding to the charge, the Tutor General explained that the new order was occasioned by the exigencies of the time.

According to him, the division of the school into two was a strategy to enable the state conveniently cater for the growing number of students.

He said Lagos, being a city with an ever increasing population as a result of the migration from other states of the federation, required some level of creativity to be able to accommodate more students.

“The creation of additional schools becomes very necessary, and that is why another school was created within,” he said.

He pointed out that the situation was not peculiar to Lagos Baptist Secondary School, Orile Agege, but many other schools in the state.

Akindele, however, sought audience with the Tutor General, saying members of the old students association would like to meet him to find a way of bringing back the old system whereby the school would be made up of junior and secondary school as was the case in the 1980s.
