The state commander, Idris Muhammed-Lawan, disclosed this in a statement signed by FRSC’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, on Saturday in Kano.

The statement said: “we received a distress call at about 9:25 a.m. and arrived at the scene within 10 minutes.

“The accident involved a DAF trailer loaded with goods and passengers, travelling from Wudil Market en route to Lagos State.

“The passengers were 30 male adults; two persons died, 20 others sustained varying degrees of injuries, while eight were unhurt.”

According to the statement, preliminary investigations reveal that the driver lost control due to over speeding while approaching the T-Junction and hit another vehicle parked by the roadside.

The statement added that the victims were taken to Wudil General Hospital for treatment.

It quoted the state commander expressing concern over continued violation of road safety regulations, particularly the use of trailers for conveying passengers.

He said overspeeding and overloading remained major causes of road crashes and urged drivers to comply strictly with traffic rules.

Muhammed-Lawan advised the general public to avoid boarding trailers and other unsafe vehicles.

UNICEF’s Kano Chief of Field Office, Mr Rahma Farah, raised the alarm during an orientation for 44 local government area chairmen and district heads on polio eradication, routine immunisation, and primary healthcare services.

Farah said that more than a quarter of a million children in Kano have never received routine immunisation vaccines, making the state home to the highest number of zero-dose children in Nigeria.

“This isn’t just a statistic; it represents the future of nearly a quarter of a million children who are vulnerable to preventable diseases, putting their lives and our communities at risk.

“This is not an isolated issue but a deeply concerning trend that threatens the health of our entire state.”

Farah also highlighted the alarming rise in variant poliovirus cases in the state, with six cases reported in 2022, 27 in 2023, and 29 in 2024.

“This escalating trend underscores the critical need for collective efforts to safeguard our children,” he stated.

He emphasised the importance of vaccination in preventing diseases such as polio, measles, and diphtheria, urging local government chairpersons, traditional leaders, and the state government to strengthen immunisation efforts.

“I urge you to establish well-funded and functional immunisation task forces in each local government area,” Farah said.

Dr Abubakar Labaran, the Commissioner for Health, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery, particularly in vaccination, polio eradication, and reducing maternal mortality.

Dr Nasiru Mahmud, Director-General of the State Primary Healthcare Management Board, explained that the workshop was designed to update stakeholders on health indicators, immunisation, polio eradication, and the challenge of zero-dose children.

He stressed the importance of familiarising participants with their roles and responsibilities in addressing these issues.

Jamilu Danbatta, the chairman of the Association for Local Government of Nigeria, ALGON, in Kano, spoke on behalf of the participants.

He pledged to intensify efforts to eradicate polio and improve routine immunisation in the state.

Danbatta also expressed commitment to collaborating with UNICEF to ensure the success of these efforts and strengthen immunisation initiatives across Kano.

The lawmakers repealed the Emirates Law at a special plenary presided over by the Speaker, Jibril Falgore, on Thursday.

Falgore invoked Order seven Rule 3 (A) of the House and directed the Clerk of the House, Alhaji Bashir Diso, to carry out the third reading of the bill to repeal the law.

The Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Butu-Butu, in a contribution, explained that repealing the law would revive the lost glory of Kano.

He said that the division of Kano Emirate into five Emirates “damaged the capacity and dignity of the Emirate and the state.”

The Majority Leader, Lawan Hussaini, added that the Emirate Council was a custodian of culture of the Kano people which was distorted by the creation of the additional Emirates.

Dala said that when the law was amended, all the five Emirate Councils would be abolished while the Commissioner for Local Government would oversee the activities of the dissolved Emirate.

He said that repealing the law was timely and the decision should be communicated to the state governor, Abba Yusuf,  for assent.

The opposition members, led by Minority Whip, Alhaji Ayuba Labaran (Kabo- APC), however, opposed the move to repeal the law and staged a walk-out from the chamber.

When contacted, Labaran explained that the move was for “selfish interest”.

He added that the previous administration created the Emirates to foster unity and development.
