By KAZEEM AKINTUNDE

It was George Orwell in his satirical allegorical novella, ‘Animal Farm’, first published in England on August 17, 1945, that wrote that “all animals are equal but that some are more equal than others”. The novella was a critique of the Russian Revolution and the Soviet Union under Stalin. The story follows a group of farm animals who overthrow their human farmer, hoping to create a society where all animals are equal. However, the pigs, being the most intelligent, gradually seize power, becoming as corrupt and oppressive as their former human rulers. The pigs, led by Napoleon, manipulate and exploit the other animals, ultimately creating a totalitarian regime. The novel highlights themes of power, corruption, deception, and the dangers of totalitarianism.

It seems Nigeria has also degenerated to that level, going by what took place in the country few days apart, but with the different treatments given to the issues by those in government.

Our discourse last week was the shameful conduct of Nigerian Fuji star, Wasiu Ayinde Anifowose, at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja, where he wanted to stop a plane from taking off without him with his bare hands! Anifowose, also known as KWAM 1, was prevented from boarding a ValueJet flight to Lagos for refusing to comply with a simple aviation rule which prohibits having alcoholic beverages on board. KWAM 1, at the time of boarding, had with him, a gold flask, which the airline crew believed contained alcoholic beverage. When told that he could not board the flight with his flask without the content examined, he became rude and eventually poured the content on the flight Captain and other aviation staff.

When the door of the aircraft was shut on him and preparing for take-off, he stood in front of the aircraft on the tarmac, an action that annoyed the captain, who also taxied the aircraft like a molue – a reckless action that could have been fatal for the musician, who escaped by the whiskers by dodging the wing of the aircraft seconds before impact.

Although, KWAM 1 insisted that he had only water in the flask, he was slammed with a six-month suspension after being placed on a no-fly list by the NCAA. The license of the pilot and her first officer were also suspended, pending full investigation.

However, the noise from the incident was yet to die down when another airline passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, became unruly on an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos.

Ms. Emmanson alongside other passengers on board the aircraft were told to switch off their phones as the plane was about to take off. But Comfort, from the account of a third-party passenger sitting close to her, informed the air hostess that her phone was already on flight mode and that the button to switch off the phone was no longer working. It was another passenger sitting beside her that eventually assisted her to switch off the phone. However, Comfort felt disrespected and complained bitterly to other passengers throughout the flight.

Upon landing in Lagos, the same purser prevented her from disembarking from the flight, apparently waiting for security agents to pick her up. Things soon degenerated as video footage of what transpired afterwards has since gone viral.

In the process of arresting Comfort, she was bundled out of the plane like a common criminal and in the process, her top was torn, exposing her private parts. She became unruly and attacked anyone within sight. She was later restrained, taken to court the following day, and thrown into Kirikiri prison by a Magistrate Court.

It was at this stage that many Nigerians lost their cool and took to social media to vent.

READ ALSO: EXTRA: In Nigeria, the storm is over, By Olabode Opeseitan

Comfort soon got another name -KWAM 2. The difference in the treatments given to the two cases by those in power infuriated many Nigerians. While KWAM 1, whose action on the tarmac in Abuja amounts to an act of terrorism was at home eating fried rice and chicken, KWAM 2 was languishing in Kirikiri, drinking garri with watery beans.

To add to her punishment, Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) also banned her from flying both local and international flights for life.

When the noise became unbearable, the federal government was left with no option than to order the immediate release of Comfort after the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), human rights groups, and prominent lawyers, including Femi Falana (SAN), took the government to the cleaners.

Festus Keyamo, Aviation Minister, somehow came up with a political solution to the whole crisis, a situation that got many Nigerians boiling. The Federal Government, in their bid to give a soft landing to their pal, KWAM 1, directed that his flight ban of six months be reduced to a one-month period. Keyamo, in his wisdom, felt that with KWAM-1 having publicly demonstrated penitence by apologising to the President and Nigerians, deserved pardon. He therefore pleaded with the NCAA to withdraw its criminal complaints earlier lodged with the Police against KWAM 1.

Again, in the case of Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and the co-pilot, First Officer Ivan Oloba of ValueJet, whose licenses were suspended, Keyamo directed that the NCAA should restore their licenses after a one-month ban after which they must undergo some mandatory professional re-appraisal. However, the most ridiculous was that FAAN should work with KWAM-1 with a view to engaging him as an Ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward. What is the logic in appointing KWAM-1 as an Ambassador for proper airport conduct so soon after penalising him for disrupting a flight? This is one decision that is contradictory, and has the potential of damaging public trust in aviation governance.

It is shameful that the federal government, without allowing the Police to conclude their investigation and possibly file charges against KWAM 1 hastily accepted his apology and granted him pardon. Again, it is doubtful if the Federal Government considered the full implications of its handling of the case of KWAM 1. By this hypothetical action, the Tinubu administration has lost its moral right to arrest and prosecute any passenger who commits an offence at any of the nation’s airports. Since citizens have equal rights, obligations, and opportunities before the law, the federal government will, henceforth, be accused of subjecting any unruly passenger to discriminatory treatment on the ground that KWAM 1 was ‘pardoned’ without any criminal trial whatsoever. Excusing offenders on ground of ‘remorse’ risks encouraging impunity and undermining the strict standards that govern the aviation sector. If we do not maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards unruly behaviour, we risk creating a culture where passengers believe they can act recklessly without consequences. We are in a country where we do not follow rules and order, a Nation where discipline is grossly lacking and should be instilled. It is not proper for us to continue to forgive people on compassionate grounds. Nigeria is not being run on law and order, but on the whims of who and who are involved.

That is the beginning of a Banana Republic where anything goes. The message we are sending to the youths with this, is for them to make money at all cost, become an ‘influential’ member of the society, and they can get away with anything. After all, KWAM 1 did and has gotten away with it with more or less national honours.

Again, KWAM 2, escaped punishment because Nigerians felt that since KWAM 1 committed a more serious offence, why punish one and leave the other? Isn’t what is good for the goose good for the gander? Now, Comfort has been released from Kirikiri Prison after the federal government withdrew charges levelled against her in Court. The life ban placed on her has also been lifted, while AON, is also looking at the option of using Comfort, who has also ‘shown remorse’, as an ‘ambassador for good passenger conduct’. How low can we go again?

Why do we have laws that we won’t implement? Part 17.89 of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations, known as Nig. CARs 2023, stated that: ‘’any passenger who becomes unruly at the airport or on board an aircraft commits an offence. Again, section 17.89.1.2 gave a wider definition of the word ‘unruly’ as used in the above section as referring but not limited to the following acts: (b) Use of mobile phones and/or other communication/electronics gadgets on board an aircraft without the approval of the aircraft commander; (c) fighting or other disorderly conduct on board an aircraft or at the terminal building; (d) Any conduct/act constituting a nuisance to other passengers; (e) Disobedience of lawful instructions issued by the aircraft commander, flight crew, cabin attendants, check-in staff and/or security screening staff; (f) Any conduct that endangers or is likely to endanger the safety of flight operations.

Section 17.89.1.3 went on to state that: “where any passenger becomes unruly on board an aircraft or at the terminal building, the aircraft commander or airport authority shall take necessary measures including restraint where necessary: (a) to protect the safety of the aircraft, terminal building or of persons or property therein; or (b) to maintain good order and discipline on board or at the terminal building; and to enable him deliver such person to competent authorities.”

Against this background, many Nigerians are of the view that the minister’s action was not only shameful, but damaging to the country’s image and reputation. They argue that the minister’s action showed that Nigeria is not following the rules of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

For spending 24 hour in jail, Nigerian men are also falling over themselves, offering mouth-watering deals to Comfort. Ossai Ovie Success, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has announced a mouth-watering deal for her. In an Instagram post, Ossai said that he had secured a job in Delta State for Emmerson with a monthly salary of N500,000. The governor’s aide also promised to bankroll an all-expenses-paid trip to the state, including flight tickets, a five-star hotel stay, guided tours, and a ticket to the Delta Social Media Summit slated for August 28 in Asaba. According to him, the offer is meant to help Emmerson “unwind” after her prison ordeal. Francis Van-lare has also offered her a free trip to Doha in Qatar and Istanbul, Türkiye, with $100,000 as her basic travel allowance. It is quite ironic that many of those promising her heaven on earth are simply lusting after what they saw on her chest and are not really ready to help her.

But one man who will not sit down and allow the double standard slide, Public Interest advocate, Ayodele Ademiluyi, has instituted a N500 billion suit against the Federal Government, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, and several other parties at the Federal High Court in Lagos, accusing them of grossly violating the rule of law in the handling of KWAM 1 and KWAM 2 cases.

The case, marked FHC/L/CS/1632/25, names as respondents, the President of Nigeria, the Attorney-General of the Federation, Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo (SAN), NCAA, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Ibom Air, ValueJet, the Nigerian Correctional Service, King Wasiu Ayinde, the Nigeria Police Force, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, the state’s Attorney-General, and the Airline Operators of Nigeria. According to him, the dispute goes beyond the individuals involved, exposing deeper institutional weaknesses. The lawyer faulted the disparate treatments given to both cases, alleging that KWAM 1 faced no legal repercussions, while Emmerson was subjected to swift punitive action. Let’s wait and see how the case would pan out in Court.

However, nobody should be surprised if ICAO and IATA wield the big stick against us. They are looking at the shenanigans going on in our aviation industry. When they come here for an audit, the Minister and the President will not be there to answer the questions; it is the Director-General of the NCAA that will answer their queries.

See you next week.

Miracle no dey tire government. In case, just in case, you are in doubt, the conversion of KI from an aircraft-blocking, fluid-splashing passenger into an “ambassador for airport security” should simultaneously convince and confuse you. It is not clemency, but the state’s thumbs up (Kundus, if you like) to egregious celebrity misbehaviour, complete with a press release and ministerial applause.

K1 did not just merely “offend sensibilities.” He violated aviation safety rules, assaulted crew members, obstructed a plane’s movement and delayed its operation, all of which, in sane countries, should have got him handcuffed, prosecuted and possibly banned from flying indefinitely.

The FG initially appeared ready to take a tough stance, with a proposed six-month flying ban that was later stated to be ’till further notice’, along with communication to the AGF and IGP to facilitate his prosecution. All of this has ended in a one-month flying ban and a new job title. Foreplay without consummation.

READ ALSO: FOR THE RECORD: FG’s statement on KWAM 1, Emmanson

The message? If you are famous enough, you can weaponise “remorse” like an access card to the VIP lounge of impunity. The musician’s apology, as I stated in a previous post, does not suggest that he is sorry.

The case of Comfort Emmanson, whose fun bag spill provoked mirth and revulsion in equal measure, seals the irony. She languished in prison for slapping a flight attendant and refusing to turn off her phone. She got her reprieve only after the nation had had its fill of spectacle. In contrast, KWAM 1’s punishment was negotiated down before the ink on the investigation dried.

Keyamo, the Aviation Minister, said this is “drawing a line.” It certainly is, but the line is drawn in disappearing ink on tissue paper and during a rainstorm. What we have here is not a lesson in law enforcement but a masterclass in the doctrine of selective justice, which makes rules rigid for the powerless and limitlessly elastic for the powerful, rich and famous.

At this rate, the next disruptive celebrity might not only avoid jail but also get a government contract to lecture pilots on cockpit etiquette. A Yahoo boy will someday be EFCC brand ambassador.

Anyone engaged in any criminal act at the nation’s airports may not go scot-free any longer, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has warned.

Keyamo gave the warning on Wednesday in a statement announcing the withdrawal of criminal complaints against fuji musician, Wasiu Ayinde, and Ms. Comfort Emmanson.

While Emmanson assaulted a crew member and some other officials of Ibom Air at the airport, KWAM 1 breached safety at the airport as he stood in front of Value Jet aircraft to prevent take off.

Kwam 1 had been issued with a six months “No fly” ban while comfort had been remanded in Kirikiri correctional centre and banned for life from flying.

But announcing the granting of pardon and withdrawal of criminal complaints against the two person, the minister said the chances of pardon against any such criminal action in future would no longer be condoned.

READ ALSO: Drainage: Lagos announces plan to divert traffic on Osborne Road

His words: “We are also sending a CLEAR MESSAGE that we take safety and security in the aviation sector very seriously and we have decided to draw a line after these clemencies.”

The minister explained that the withdrawal of the criminal cases against KWAM 1 and Emmanson was on compassionate grounds.

He also argued that the decision had nothing to do with the sentiment expressed in some quarters over the cases of the two persons in question.

On Emmanson’s case, the minister stated that he had conferred with Ibom Airline to withdraw the complaint against her, having “exhibited great remorse for her conduct.”

In the case of Wasiu Ayinde and Value Jet, the minister said the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, would reduce his flight ban to a one-month period.

In the case of Captain Oluranti Ogoyi, and the co-pilot, First Officer Ivan Oloba of Value Jet, the NCAA would restore their licenses after the period of one-month ban after undergoing some mandatory professional re-appraisal.

While Emmanson assaulted a crew member and some other officials of Ibom Air at the airport, KWAM 1 breached safety at the airport as he stood in front of Value Jet aircraft to prevent take off.

In the last 48 hours, I have been in consultation with critical stakeholders in the Aviation Sector and those involved in the unfortunate incidents regarding the unruly behaviours of certain individuals at our airports of recent.

Though regrettable, we think valuable lessons have been learnt by all sides to these incidents and airport security protocol, especially, have been well highlighted for the travelling public. If nothing at all, the episodes have undoubtedly helped to raise public awareness about appropriate conduct within the aviation space.

As highlighted in my previous statements on the last two incidents, clear wrongs were committed by both the offending passengers and staff of the airlines involved from all the evidence available to us and those available to the public. It is clear that all the actors involved cannot continue to highlight the injury or injustice done to them without acknowledging their own equal culpability.

Therefore, after reviewing the entire incidents, including appeals made by well-meaning individuals and remorse shown by the actors, the following decisions have been reached:

THE CASE OF IBOM AIRLINE AND MS. COMFORT EMMANSON

(a) In the case of the unruly passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, on the Ibom Airline on Sunday, the 10th of August, 2025, I have conferred with Ibom Airline to withdraw the Complaint against her today. When the Police took her Statement in presence of her lawyer, she exhibited great remorse for her conduct.

(b) Subsequent to the withdrawal of the complaint by the Complainant, the CP of Airport Command and the Police Prosecutor will immediately take the remaining steps to facilitate her release from Kirikiri Prisons within this week.

(c) I have also conferred with the leadership of the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) and have appealed to them to lift the life-time flying ban imposed on her, to which they agreed. The details of the resolution will be made public by the AON subsequently.

THE CASE OF VALUEJET AND WASIU AYINDE MARSHALL (KWAM 1)

(d) In the case of KWAM 1, the NCAA is to reduce his flight ban to a one-month period. FAAN will also work with the music star with a view to engaging him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward.

(e) Having publicly demonstrated penitence, the NCAA is also to withdraw its criminal complaints against KWAM 1 earlier lodged with the Police.

(f) In the case of Captain Oluranti Ogoyi, and the co-pilot, First Officer Ivan Oloba of VALUEJET, the NCAA is to restore their licenses after the same period of one-month ban after undergoing some mandatory professional re-appraisal. The details will be announced by the NCAA.

AIRLINE OPERATORS, AVIATION AND OTHER GOVERNMENT AGENCIES

I have directed all relevant Aviation agencies in collaboration with other complementary agencies outside aviation to IMMEDIATELY begin a retreat NEXT WEEK to properly retrain and prepare our Aviation security personnel on how to deal with errant and disruptive passengers and how to deescalate potentially explosive situations. The retreat will be fully covered by the Press with the opportunity to ask all the relevant questions.

The Airlines will also have their own session when the conduct and attitude of their staff towards members of the travelling public will be in full focus.

FINAL COMMENTS

These above decisions were taken by Government and the airline operators purely on COMPASSIONATE grounds as Government will never pander to base sentiments, politically-motivated views or warped legal opinions when clear encroachment of our laws are involved.

We are also sending a CLEAR MESSAGE that we take safety and security in the aviation sector very seriously and we have decided to draw a line after these clemencies.

Similarly, the case against fuji musician, Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as KWAM 1, over safety breach at the Murtala Muhammed Airport against him, has been withdrawn.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, made the announcement on Wednesday in a statement he issued.

He said the decisions to withdraw the cases were purely on compassionate grounds and not the sentiments expressed in some quarters.

He, however, stated that the government had sent a clear message that it took safety and security matter in the aviation industry very seriously.

Warning that no such violation would be entertained in the future, he emphasized that “we have decided to draw a line after these clemencies.”

By KAZEEM AKINTUNDE

Musician Wasiu Ayinde Anifowose was in the news for the better part of last week for the wrong reasons. His big-sized ego and half-baked education eventually became his undoing. Scheduled to board a morning flight from Abuja to Lagos, Anifowose, who has rebranded his name and music on more than four different occasions, proceeded to take onboard a ValueJet Aircraft, a golden flask containing some liquid substance. When told that having liquid substances on board an aircraft was against standard aviation rules, he became unruly, asking the aircraft hostess ‘’Do you know who I am?’’ Hear the full account of what transpired from the aircraft Captain, Oluranti Ogoyi.

“During boarding, which commenced as scheduled at 8:10 a.m, KWAM1 approached the aircraft at about 08:15–08:20, carrying a gold flask of unknown content. Ground staff requested, as per standard procedure, to verify the content of the flask but he vehemently refused. He was seen drinking from the flask and the ground staff suspected that it contained alcohol, a substance prohibited on-board an aircraft in Nigeria. Instead, he responded with comments such as, “Do you know who I am?” “You have no right to tell me to open my flask”. As he reached the foot of the aircraft, security personnel reiterated that he could not board without complying with the inspection. He became confrontational, causing a disruption. To manage the situation and prevent further delay, I exited the cockpit and approached Mr. Ayinde to engage him amicably. Without warning, he opened the flask and poured its contents on me, the security personnel, and some nearby passengers. Following this assault, airport security intervened, and other passengers were allowed to continue boarding. The Head of Security advised that Mr. Ayinde should not be permitted to travel on the flight due to his unruly behaviour. I agreed, prioritising the safety of my passengers and crew. After shutting the aircraft doors, I observed that Mr. Ayinde was still near the aircraft, obstructing movement. I made a public announcement to inform passengers of the delay while security personnel worked to remove him from the area. Once he was moved out of sight, I commenced taxing and departed for Lagos at approximately 08:50. This incident caused significant delay, disruption, and posed safety risks to passengers, crew, and the operation of the flight.”

From the video of the scene that has now gone viral, KWAM 1 was seen in front of the aircraft blocking its movement and in what appears to be in a fit of anger, Captain Ogoyi also turned the aircraft into a molue, as she began taxing, endangering the life of KWAM 1, his personal assistant, and other airport workers still within the vicinity of the aircraft. For her unprofessional conduct, Captain Ogoyi has now had her licence suspended, while KWAM 1 has been placed on No-flight list for six months. The NCAA has also written to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to immediately arrest the musician and for the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, to commence his prosecution.

KWAM 1 has pushed back through his media aide, Kunle Rasheed, who stated in a press statement that he was the victim and not the aggressor in the incident. He dismissed reports that his boss breached aviation protocol or endangered passengers during the flight-boarding process on August 5, 2025. But when it became glaring that he had run foul of the law, KWAM 1 tendered an unreserved apology to Nigerians for his misconduct.

Indeed, KWAM 1 was unruly and obstinate on that day, although it didn’t come as much of a surprise to Nigerians, most of whom feel that that has been his stock in trade since he got on the entertainment scene. “Once he is angry, nobody can control him except his late mother”, according to an anonymous source. Perhaps due to the big-sized ego that ballooned out of his God-given fame, money and influence as a friend to the high and mighty in the country, he believes that he can do anything and get away with it.

READ ALSO: President Tinubu, the North and distortions of politics

This writer grew up in Lagos Island, the same vicinity with KWAM 1, and he has always struck me as saucy and arrogant. Even when he was still relatively young and struggling, he behaved and acted as though he was beyond reproach. An incident that happened 37 years ago between myself and KWAM 1 is still fresh in my memory. A sister was getting married and Wasiu Ayinde was on the band stand. When it was time for my sister to hit the dance floor, she beckoned on me and my other colleagues to come on stage to dance with her. But on seeing how young we were and suspecting that we may not have mint notes to spray him, he flew into a rage, saying “You expect me to sing for these young kids?” Even though I was in my 20s at the time, that episode remains etched in my memory.

Addressing people without clout became such an open part of him that it became apparent to many attendees at the burial of his late mother when he told a close family friend that Muslim clerics were constantly in his house looking for what to eat. Unknown to him, the conversation was recorded and uploaded on social media. Many Islamic clerics were shocked, and some actually placed a curse on him. His bad manner of approach also reflected in the way he spoke to President Bola Tinubu on phone when the President called him to commiserate with him on the demise of his mother. That phone conversation was made public by KWAM 1 himself.

I only pray that his indiscretion won’t cause Nigeria’s aviation sector another round of sanctions or downgrading from the relevant international aviation bodies.

Some have suggested that, perhaps, his lack of formal education may be responsible for his garrulous behaviour. Maybe, maybe not. Perhaps that is why he is trying to rectify that impression by enrolling as an undergraduate in a University in Nigeria.

At 68, a titled Chief, and a prominent figure in the society, for KWAM 1 to stand in front of a moving aircraft, trying to stop it from taxing off, still baggers belief and trust Nigerians to read meanings into such things.

Some are saying that it is not an ordinary act and that the curse placed on him by the Muslim clerics for the embarrassment he meted on their image at his late mother’s Fida’u may be responsible for his recent disgraceful behaviour.

Now, if you’ve never stood near one of those big jets – those with the massive engines that spin like fans – you need to know something: those engines can suck a full-grown adult into them. Human body, clothing, phones, caps -everything. Those engines are not toys. They’re beasts, designed to move 70–100 tonnes of metal at 800 km/h. You don’t block that kind of thing with your chest, no matter how full you think it is or who you think you are. And to make matters more interesting and incredulous, KWAM-1 wasn’t wearing earmuffs. No personal protective equipment. Nothing. Just his bruised ego.

If KWAM-1 was rash and uncut, what happened to the excellent training the aircraft pilot got while in flying school? Was she ready to commit murder with the way and manner that she taxied around humans on the tarmac, damning the consequences? The truth is, no matter how disruptive a passenger may be, a pilot’s first duty is to ensure the safety of everyone and not to take matters into their hands in a way that could have ended in tragedy. Pilots are trained to handle disruptive passengers and standard procedure dictates that security personnel – not the captain – should deal with such situations. If KWAM-1 was indeed unruly, the right course of action was to have alerted the FAAN (Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria) security to remove him, even if it meant handcuffing him to do so. What the pilot did, moving the aircraft while a passenger and other airport staff was still within distance was not only reckless, it was a gross violation of aviation safety.

Before an aircraft can taxi or take off, clearance must first be given by Air Traffic Control (ATC). Did the pilot receive such clearance, or did she act unilaterally? If she moved the plane without authorisation, that’s another serious breach. Aviation rules exist for a reason – to prevent accidents – not to empower pilots to make impulsive decisions that could cost lives. Imagine if the worst had happened, the narrative would have shifted from “courageous pilot” to “negligent pilot who caused a preventable death.” The airline, the aviation industry, and Nigeria as a whole, would have faced international scrutiny.

Again, the third guilty party in this sordid case that many are not paying close to are those responsible for security, key officials of the airline, as well as the two regulatory agencies – the NCAA and FAAN. Perhaps beholding to the musician and awe-struck by his fame, those security agencies failed to do their jobs. They succeeded in telling the whole world that security of such an important place could be breached at will by well-connected people without an attempt to checkmate them or any immediate consequence.

They allowed KWAM-1 to ride roughshod over them like the lord of the tarmac, untamed by security and aviation officials; until the advancing aircraft put a stop to his ill-advised power show and shenanigans. He was forced to scamper for safety not by security personnel and officials, but by the wing of the aircraft!

The musician was tacitly allowed to violate the sanctity of the Airport and roam endlessly and dangerously in restricted areas with very feeble attempt to checkmate him. No, they didn’t check him. They were actually pleading with him! There was no gun drawn and no attempt to physically bundle him away from where he shouldn’t have been in the first place. A less known individual not connected with the power loop would have been visited with some immediate consequences, including physical restraint, and possibly handcuffed.

KWAM-1 was lucky. It could have been a gory end for him. He almost paid for his supercilious carriage and indiscretion with his life. When the pilot revved the engine of the plane and in full throttle, the plane began its pre-departure taxing for the runway, KWAM-1 was in its direct path. He ducked the plane wings just before the moment of Impact. It was a near tragedy; he was seconds away from being crushed or decapitated by the wings of an aircraft in full throttle. By his irresponsible and wanton acts, he has repeatedly done damage to his name and brand, his apology notwithstanding.

Now that NCAA has called on Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police and Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to arrest and prosecute KWAM-1 for turning the tarmac into a circus show, let us see how the sordid encounter will turn out. I only pray that his indiscretion won’t cause Nigeria’s aviation sector another round of sanctions or downgrading from the relevant international aviation bodies.

See you next week.

By SAMUEL IDOWU TOGUN

A recent incident involving celebrated Fuji musician, Wasiu Ayinde, should alarm every Nigerian who still believes in the rule of law and aviation safety. Ayinde, a passenger on a commercial flight, was disembarked after allegedly attempting to carry a flask containing alcohol on board and, according to accounts, tried to forcefully intrude into a restricted area, putting passengers and crew at risk.

Let’s call it what it is: this was an act of airside intrusion with hijack potential. The ValueJet pilot’s actions were nothing short of heroic, ensuring the safety of every soul on board. In a country where we too often criticise professionals for negligence, here was a pilot exercising vigilance under pressure, and she deserves commendation, not punishment.

Why the Pilot May Not Have Seen Him

Much noise has been made online about how the pilot could have missed spotting the intruder. But aviation professionals know that cockpit blind spots are real and dangerous. If Ayinde had been standing in the “nose shadow” — that small but critical zone directly in front of the aircraft or close to the engines or fuselage, he would have been completely invisible to the pilot’s line of sight.

During taxiing, this visual limitation is even worse. That’s why airports rely on marshallers, wing-walkers, and strict ramp protocols. The pilot likely assumed that ground security had already dealt with the disruption before she began moving.

READ ALSO: Providus Bank, Polaris Bank join sponsors of QEDNG Creative Powerhouse Summit

The VIP Security Loophole

The real scandal here is not just the incident itself, but what it reveals about the rot in Nigerian airport security. Ordinary travellers are subjected to invasive searches and endless questioning. VIPs, however, glide through without so much as an open bag check. Their luggage is often untouched; their word is taken as truth.

This double standard is fertile ground for abuse. From drug trafficking to money laundering, our “untouchables” enjoy a security-free pass that is both dangerous and disgraceful. That Ayinde’s daughter, a Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor, publicly defended him on the basis that he “always travels with his flask” speaks volumes about the entitlement and immunity enjoyed by the elite.

The Latest Twist and Why It’s Hollow

Following public outcry, reports say the pilot has been suspended and the passenger slapped with a six-month flight ban. But Nigerians know this script too well: these measures will either be quietly reversed or never enforced at all. In a system where power shields privilege, consequences for the influential often vanish in the fog of bureaucracy.

The World is Watching

This is not just a local embarrassment. International aviation regulators are paying attention. Cases like this raise red flags about Nigeria’s compliance with global air safety standards. If we fail to enforce our own rules, we risk not only public safety but also the credibility of our entire aviation sector in the eyes of the world.

Aviation Safety is Not Optional

A commercial aircraft is not a nightclub. A pilot’s cockpit is not a greenroom for celebrities. Aviation safety is non-negotiable, and if Nigerian authorities cannot enforce that equally for all, then they have already failed the flying public.

Popular fuji act, Wasiu Ayinde, has apologised over the safety breach at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja terminal, involving him and two pilots of ValueJet Airlines.

The incident led to the suspension of the licences of the pilots and the placement of Ayinde, popularly referred to as KWAM 1, on no-fly list.

In a statement he personally signed, KWAM 1 on Friday declared that the incident was unfortunate.

He added: “I acknowledge and deeply regret the concerns that arose from the incident. It was never my intention to cause any disruption or violate aviation protocols in any way.”

Apologising, KWAM 1 said, “To the Presidency, Ministry of Aviation, FAAN, NCAA, ValueJet, fellow Nigerians, and my teeming fans across the world who have shown great concern since the incident happened, I tender my unreserved and heartfelt apology.”

The statement reads in full:

“The incident that occurred at the local wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on August 5, 2025, involving my humble self and ValueJet Airline, was, to say the least, unfortunate.

“Unknown to many, I suffer from chronic dehydration, and my doctor strongly advised that I remain constantly hydrated. This is why I always carry a water flask with me. And contrary to the negative narrative being circulated in some quarters, the flask I carried on that particular day contained only water — not alcohol, as wrongly alleged.

“For the record, I passed through two security screenings with the flask empty. The flask was only filled with water at the lounge area, just before heading to the tarmac. This fact can be verified by the CCTV footage at the airport lounge. More so, I hadn’t even boarded the plane, let alone being deboarded.

“However, I acknowledge and deeply regret the concerns that arose from the incident. It was never my intention to cause any disruption or violate aviation protocols in any way.

READ ALSO: Remains of late Olubadan, Oba Olakulehin, to rest on Friday

My unwavering patriotism and unshaken loyalty to the Federal Republic of Nigeria have never been in doubt. Over the years, I have consistently used my God-given talent and platform to promote the Nigerian brand across the globe. I would never do anything to tarnish the image I’ve built over the past five decades, nor would I knowingly act in a way that could diminish the reputation of the country I love so dearly.

“That said, the incident is sincerely regretted. I remain committed to upholding the values and responsibilities that come with being a global ambassador of Nigerian music and culture.

“To the Presidency, Ministry of Aviation, FAAN, NCAA, ValueJet, fellow Nigerians, and my teeming fans across the world who have shown great concern since the incident happened, I tender my unreserved and heartfelt apology.”

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, has petitioned the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Inspector-General of Police to investigation the incident involving a musician, King Wasiu Ayinde, and domestic airline, ValueJet.

‎This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection of NCAA on Thursday in Abuja.

‎The incident, which occurred on Tuesday reportedly disrupted standard operational procedures and raised concerns over passenger conduct and airline safety protocols.

The statement said preliminary reports revealed that during a scheduled ValueJet flight VK201, Ayinde, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, allegedly involved in actions that violated the Nigeria Civil Aviation regulations.

‎”While full details of the incident are still being compiled, the NCAA has emphasised the importance of upholding aviation safety standards and ensuring accountability, regardless of the parties involved.

‎”In a letter addressed to both the Attorney-General and the Inspector-General of Police, the NCAA called for a comprehensive criminal investigation and the initiation of appropriate prosecution in accordance with the provisions of the Nigeria Civil Aviation regulations (Nig. CARs) 2023 supra and all other applicable laws.

“Director-General of Civil Aviation, Capt. Chris Najomo, has also issued an advisory to Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), urging immediate consideration and institution of a No-Fly List for K1 De Ultimate (on any commercial flight), pending outcome of official investigations,” the statement reads.

‎It noted that the advisory was in line with global aviation standards that prioritise the safety of passengers, crew and airline operations.

‎”The NCAA reiterates its commitment to ensuring that no individual, regardless of their status or public image, undermines the integrity of our aviation industry as passengers are held to the same standards of behaviour and compliance within Nigeria’s airspace.

‎”Further updates will be provided as investigations progresses,” the statement reads further.
