The Court of Appeal sitting in Ilorin on Friday affirmed the death sentences imposed on five men convicted over the 2018 Offa bank robbery.

The court dismissed the appeal of the convicts for lack of merit.

The appellate panel, comprising Justice Ridwan Abdullahi, Justice Gabriel Kolawole and Justice Abdul Dogo, upheld the judgment of Justice Haleemah Saleeman of the Kwara High Court which sentenced the appellants to death by hanging.

The convicts are Niyi Ogundiran, Salawu Azeez, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Ayoade Akinnibosun and Adeola Abraham.

In its ruling, the court rejected all the grounds of appeal filed by the appellants and ordered their immediate return to prison custody.

The convictions arose from the coordinated bank robbery carried out in April 2018 in Offa, headquarters of Offa local government area of Kwara, during which five commercial banks were attacked.

No fewer than 32 persons, including nine police officers, were killed during the attacks.

The convicts were found guilty of armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms and culpable homicide.

A sixth suspect, who was a retired police officer, Michael Adikwu, died in custody before the commencement of the trial.

Justice Saleeman had earlier sentenced the five convicts to death by hanging after a trial that lasted about six years and attracted nationwide attention.

The lead prosecution counsel, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), described the appellate court’s decision as thorough and well considered, inspite of the prolonged delays that characterised the trial.

Mr Abdullah Jimba, counsel to one of the convicts, said preparations were underway to pursue a final appeal at the Supreme Court.

Six young Nigerians have emerged winners in the Hadith competition organised by the King Mohammed VI Foundation of African Oulema, Morocco.

Dr AbdulGaniyu Tijani, one of the judges of the competition disclosed this while speaking with newsmen during the closing ceremony in Abuja on Saturday.

In the first category of the competition, the winners were Fatima Turbo, Muhammad Ibrahim and Abubakar Abba, all from Borno State.

In the second category, winners are Saleh Al-Amin from Borno, Ahmed Kolawole from Kwara and Khalifah Jibril from Kaduna.

The three winners in each category won cash prizes of N250,000, N200,000 and N150,000.

Tijani said that the main objective was to encourage the youths to know and memorise the Sunnah and the Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

“The main objective of this competition is not on the money that they are winning, but the knowledge and making them to memorise the Sunnah and the Hadiths of our beloved Prophet (SAW).

“We have six winners. In each category, we have three winners. So, the first is winning 250,000, the second is winning 200,000 and the third is winning 150,000,” he said.

According to him, this is the second edition of this competition.

“We had the first edition last year, this is the second edition. We hope that this competition does not stop here. It should continue.

“Nigeria today is regarded as number one in Africa in memorisation of the the Quran. And we have not been working at all on the Hadiths of the Prophet,” he said.

He said that the competition would serve as an opportunity for the young ones to start to memorise the Hadiths of the Prophet, and to know more of the Prophet.

He said the competition comprised three different levels and three different categories.

According to him, the first category has 40 Hadiths, in which the competitors have to memorise 40 Hadiths with the Sunnah.

“And also the second category has to memorise 35 Hadiths, also with the chain of that Hadith and also with the meanings of the important words in those Hadiths.

“The third category has to memorise 25 Hadiths, with the chain and also the Islamic rulings in those Hadiths. And Alhamdulillah, we just completed it,” he said.

Tijani recalled that 560 competitors participated from the beginning of the competition.

“We have been on it for the past one month, trying to see and select those that will participate on a very larger level.

“Those that won today, the six that won today will be travelling after winning some cash,” he said.

Also speaking, Prof. Ibrahim Maqari, one of the coordinators, said that the next competition was going to be the African competition.

“We are going to prepare them. There is going to be a camp where they will be mentored on the lapses that were observed in the presentations. InshAllah, we will overcome,” he said.

Ahmad Kolawole, one of the winners, said that the competition exposed him to some hadiths that he did not know about before.

“From this competition, I learned the second most important thing in Islam, which is the hadith of Muhammad, peace be upon him.

“I was exposed to some hadiths that I did not know about before. And from it, I know many things that are attributed to prayer and other important things in Islam.

“This competition encouraged me to adhere more to the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad,” he said.

Book Title: Every journalist should write a book

Author: Niran Adedokun

Number Pages: 144

Publisher: TBLNG Press

Year of Publication: 2024

Reviewer: Oluwatoyin Aliyah Ololade

This book titled Every Journalist Should Write A Book is a treasure. It’s a must read for every journalist. It serves as both a practical guide and a wake-up call for journalists to explore the vast world of journalism and deploy their inherent storytelling skills to writing impactful books. Written by Niran Adedokun, a seasoned journalists, the book parades a number of compelling reasons why every journalist should consider writing a book. It also puts the readers – journalists – on the track to actualising the dream of having a book or more to their credit.

The 144-page book is made up eleven chapters which explicitly give an inkling of what to expect. With the titles of the different chapters, a reader cannot possibly be in doubt as to the intention of the writer who is also a lawyer and Public Relations practitioner. The first chapter is “Who is a Journalist”, the second is “Why Write a Book?”, while chapter three is “Why You Haven’t Written”.

Other chapters are “What You Can Write”; “Those Who Did It Before”; “Finding Ideas For Your Book”; “Steps to Writing Your Book” and “Now Write”. The last three chapters are “Five Things to Watch”, “Publishing and Marketing”, and “My book Writing Experience.”

While emphasizing the importance of journalists to embrace book writing, Adedokun shares a personal experience when he and a friend lost a publishing opportunity despite having the qualifications. They were invited to pitch a book in celebration of an educational institution’s anniversary, but because he hadn’t written a book of his own at the time, they missed out on the deal. He strongly believes that having a published book would have increased their chances. That incident taught him a bitter lesson so to say, and led to his first book, Ladies Calling the Shots.

In the opening chapter, Adedokun defines his major target: “This book’s primary concern is the traditional journalist, who in my opinion has every skill to be an author and succeed at it.” He argues that although “writing a book is not the exclusive preserve of any group of people, the book is an attempt to encourage journalists, many of whom may not have thought about exploring the opportunities that the ancillary endeavour of book writing present.” This clarification, the author must have thought becomes expedient in view of the rise of quacks and citizen journalists who often lack formal training yet make a lot of money through the “juicy details they serve on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, X and TikTok.”

READ ALSO: NDLEA intercepts Saudi, UK-bound cocaine in lipsticks, documents

Among the many reasons why journalists should venture into book writing, according to him, is the simple but powerful affirmation: “You Can.” These two words capture the essence of the message — journalists possess a natural ability to craft compelling stories with the right hooks, regardless of their beat. The skill and talent, he reasons should naturally earns them credibility and trust, positioning them to produce meaningful books. Additionally some other things work for journalists, one of which is that journalists are trained observers — a skill that fuels creativity. He says in the light of global economic challenges, writing valuable books also presents an opportunity for journalists to build a sustainable source of income.

Other reasons he gave for the need to write books are that it increases the influence of the journalist and makes him a thought leader or consultant; it gives the opportunity to record history; it enables him to impact lives and create a legacy or immortalize himself, among others.

Journalists already possess the essential qualities—keen observation, compelling storytelling, and the discipline of deadlines. What remains is the courage to begin.

To be able to write a book, Adedokun urges journalists to purge themselves of certain factors that may keep the idea of writing a book forever remain a mere dream. They include self-doubt; the fear of “who will read what I write” and lack of money to publish among others. Here, the author explores the internal struggles journalists often face—particularly the fear that holds many back from pursuing book writing, despite having remarkable ideas. He emphasizes that the difference lies in one’s mindset. Quoting Carol Dweck, he explains that individuals with a fixed mindset are limited by their existing abilities and tend to give up when faced with challenges, while those with a growth mindset believe in their capacity to acquire new skills and knowledge, no matter how intimidating the task may seem. Reason therefore that Adedokun posited that overcoming fear is key to unlocking a journalist’s full creative potential.

The author thoroughly outlines various reasons why prospective writers often give up, with a particular emphasis on how fear manifests in those aspiring to write — a key factor contributing to their hesitation. As previously discussed, mindset plays a vital role in the decisions we make. The book offers practical suggestions for overcoming mental blocks, encouraging readers to adopt a growth mindset over a fixed one. It serves as a powerful call to action for aspiring writers to begin their journey, create a legacy, and positively impact lives through writing.

For those unsure of how to begin, the book offers guidance and creative insights for generating ideas, even with minimal resources. The author also identifies several beats and subject areas where journalists can focus their writing to achieve profound impact — ideas that I found both interesting and inspiring. For journalists who may feel unsure about what area to write on, this book serves as a helpful guide, providing clear direction and motivation.

Notably, the book highlights several journalists who transitioned into successful authors, showing that the journey is possible and rewarding. One prominent example is a popular British writer, Charles Dickens, who began his career as a parliamentary reporter with The Mirror of Parliament. His experience in journalism is believed to have significantly influenced his literary style. Dickens went on to write 15 novels, five novellas, and hundreds of short stories and nonfiction works. Remarkably, nearly 150 years after his death, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported that his works generate around 280 million euros annually for the United Kingdom’s economy. Dickens maximized his talents as both a journalist and a writer.

Another example is Nigerian journalist and author, Azuh Arinze, who has spent nearly three decades in the field. He became the editor of Reel Stars Magazine at just 26 and has since emerged as one of Nigeria’s most prolific journalist-authors. Arinze shared that the books he has written have yielded significant dividends — not just financially, but in fulfillment. He stated that being an author brings a sense of joy, happiness, and deep satisfaction that cannot be compared. According to him, there is nothing more fulfilling than having the world read, enjoy, and commend your work.

The author also cites the example of Ernest Hemingway, winner of the 1952 Nobel Prize for Literature who wrote, among other books, A Farewll To Arms; The Sun Also Rises; For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea. Other examples of journalists who had authored books are Napolean Hill, Mark Twain, Nigeria’s Simon Kolawole of The Cable, Anthony Kanayo Onwordi, popularly known as Toni Kan and Olukorede Yishau of The Nation.

Adedokun shares valuable insights on how journalists can generate ideas for writing books. He strongly emphasizes that regardless of the type of book a journalist intends to write, there is no shortcut to success — they must read, and read extensively. Immersing oneself in reading is essential to develop depth, creativity, and clarity in writing, he says.

One key piece of advice he gives is to place oneself in the shoes of the potential readers: imagine the kind of story you would love to read—and then write that story. The chapter titled, “Finding Ideas for Your Book” is packed with tips to help prospective authors discover and nurture their ideas. The author also outlines clear, coherent steps to writing a book. He highlights the importance of organising one’s thoughts—whether through planning, plotting, or drafting an outline. I particularly appreciate this chapter because it pushes aspiring authors to be intentional and focused. There’s no room for excuses — if you have the ideas and the ability to write, then you are fully capable of producing a book.

Reading this book has made me realize just how much can change within a year when one is committed and determined. According to the author, it took him less than a year to write a book after the bitter experience he had losing a book writing deal because he had no book to his credit. Even in the face of doubt, a clear goal and focused mindset can lead to incredible accomplishments. More than ever, I see how important it is for every journalist to embrace a growth mindset—a mindset that believes in learning, evolving, and pushing boundaries.

The final message of this book is both empowering and urgent: There is a wealth of educational insight embedded in its pages that can guide any journalist eager to transition into authorship. As Adedokun firmly states, “Every journalist can write a book.” Journalists already possess the essential qualities—keen observation, compelling storytelling, and the discipline of deadlines. What remains is the courage to begin.

Well edited and proofread, the book is however not without an error. At least, one is seen on Page 6 in the reference to the former governor of Lagos State, Lateef Kayode Jakande, LKJ, as “LJK”. But the error is so insignificant that it does not put a dent on the quality of the book in any way. Printer’s devil simply explains this. The cover design exudes creativity at its best, adding to the overall quality of the book. As stated earlier, this is a must read for journalists in particular and for others in general. Without doubt, Adedokun deserves a resounding applause for the good work. What more? No excuse. Every journalist should pick a copy of the book and become an author soon!

Kolawole will next compete in the Ranking Series in Budapest, Hungary, from July 14 to 19.

This is part of her preparation for the World Wrestling Championship in Croatia, scheduled later in 2025.

The 2025 Grand Prix of Spain began on Friday and ends Sunday in Madrid.

The Lagos State government on Tuesday expressed its readiness to support the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, on the launch of the Environmental Surveillance Programme, ESPN, in the state.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr.Tokunbo Wahab, made this known when delegates from NCDC led by the consultant on Needs Assessment, Prof Olatunji Kolawole, came on a courtesy visit to the ministry to inform that the state had been selected as a site for the surveillance initiative.

Wahab said the health and environment sector could not be separated, hence the multi-sectoral approach for the surveillance was a welcome development.

“I am glad we are having this collaboration at this level, interestingly for the THEME+ of this administration, the second leg of that pillar is called Health and Environment. So for those that are knowledgeable, you will all agree that you can never separate the effects of the Environment on the Health Sector,” he said.

He said the government was willing to collaborate whenever the cause and effect of the Environment and Health was being discussed saying if the government fixed the basics in the environment ecosystem, it would definitely reduce the cost of the challenges that was being experienced in the health sector.

He said the programme aimed to establish a robust Environmental Surveillance system across the state with the capacity to detect outbreak-prone pathogens, monitor endemic disease patterns, support clinical surveillance, inform vaccination strategies, and act as an early warning system for future outbreaks.

He said the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources had in recent past worked assiduously with the Ministry of Health during the cholera outbreak to proffer a lasting solution, adding that it was whatever the environment was unable to fix that ultimately became a challenge in the health sector.

He said, “We welcome you to Lagos, as Lagos believes environment is the father of all; we need to fix whatever we have to fix with the collaboration of our agencies which ranges from LASEPA, to LASWMO as well as LAWMA.”

Wahab stressed that since Lagos State had been selected as one of the five phase 2 pilot states for “the important initiative, the ministry is ready and willing to collaborate with NCDC to evaluate site requirements and resources critical for establishing effective environmental surveillance operations in the state.”

The Consultant on Needs Assessment, Prof. Olatunji Kolawole, in his response expressed appreciation to the state for its cooperation, saying it would greatly enhance the smooth implementation of the ESPN project’s objectives in Lagos State.

He added that the assessment consultant and their team would coordinate closely with relevant state officials to conduct the assessments effectively.

Also in attendance were the Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services, Engr. Mahamood Adegbite; General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, Dr. Tunde Ajayi, General Manager Lagos Waste Water Management Office, LASWMO, Engr Femi Afolabi and other directors in the ministry.

Panelists at a dialogue on the “Media of the Future” have emphasised the importance of media representation for people of African descent and the need for Africa to build its mega media platforms.

The panelists made the call at an online dialogue on the theme: “The Media of the Future: Bridging the Gap Between the West and People of African Descent.”

The dialogue was convened in New York, on the sidelines of the United Nations Summit of the Future held during the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 79) High-level Week.

UNGA 79 opened on September 10 while the High-Level Week began on Friday, September 20, and will run through September 27.

At the dialogue which was organised by Mr. Simon Ibe, Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Global Patriot Newspapers, the panelists discussed the challenges faced by Africans in gaining access to global media outlets.

Participants discussed the challenges faced by Africans in having their stories accurately represented internationally, and stressed the need for them to take control of their narratives and destinies.

The participants also advised Africans to prioritise skills for sustaining economies, attracting investment, and creating wealth, and to leverage technology and leadership in the African economy to change media coverage and ensure adequate representation of Africa’s positive aspects.

In his presentation, Dr Leo Stan Ekeh, the Chairman of Zinox Group, a tech company, stressed the importance of media representation for people of African descent and the need for Africa to build its mega media platforms.

Ekeh spoke of his contributions to the transition from analogue to digital media in West Africa and emphasised the importance of knowledge and content in the media industry.

He highlighted lack of awareness about the innovative and creative abilities of black people and stressed the need for Africa to become part of the global community through greater access to the global media.

He shared his experiences in building a tech group and digital retail business and how insufficient access to global media exposure was a major issue, and encouraged the African media practitioners to find financial resources to develop their own mega media platforms, driven by technology.

Also, Yul Anderson, President of the African American Future Society, TAAFS, spoke on the need for coordinated messaging by African media outlets to combat disinformation and promote positive stories about People of African Descent.

He spoke extensively about the Black Futures Summit, held on the sidelines of the United Nations Summit of the Future.

Laolu Akande, Editor-in-Chief of Empowered Newswire, conveyed a message from the former Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), expressing support for the team’s efforts.

Osinbajo commended the convener of the dialogue, Mr. Ibe, for creating the platform for the discussion and expressed the hope that the outcome of the event would positively impact the Media of People of African Descent.

In his presentation as a panelist, Akande spoke of the significant gaps in understanding and representation of Africa globally, emphasising the need for a more nuanced and empathetic approach to understanding Africa and its people.

He identified four gaps hindering Nigeria’s development.

These include the gap between the elite and the masses; the gap between the elite and the media; the gap between the elite and the people; and the failure of political leadership to deliver national development.

Akande, spokesman for Osinbajo, stressed the importance of the African elite taking responsibility for the continent’s fate, human capital and infrastructure development.

He pointed to the need for media leaders to invest properly in journalism and for African billionaires to fund media outlets to shape the narratives about the continent.

Ms Nicky Spencer-Coker, the spokesperson for the Permanent Mission of Sierra Leone to the United Nations in New York, shared her background as a lawyer and activist.

READ ALSO: Editors take 2024 annual conference to Bayelsa, state agenda

She discussed the significant role of the media in shaping society and narratives, emphasising the challenges faced by people of African descent in gaining access to global media outlets and having their stories accurately represented.

She highlighted the low percentage of black-owned media in the United States and acknowledged the rapid expansion of the media in Africa due to advances in telecommunications.

Spencer-Coker also pointed out the influence of American media on perceptions of Africa, often leading to negative and stereotypical portrayals.

She stressed the importance of African voices being heard and the need for more African representation in global media and leadership roles.

In her address, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, agreed on the importance of the conversation about media representation and moving the narrative forward.

Abike stressed the need to change the negative narrative about Africa and Nigeria in particular, suggesting that Africans should control their media image and invest more in the continent.

She highlighted the potential of the African diaspora, particularly in America, to contribute significantly to the continent’s development.

Abike also criticised the treatment of Africans by other Africans on the continent and encouraged the team to focus on promoting trade and collaboration among African countries.

She discussed the challenges faced by Nigerians in investing and owning homes in Africa, and mentioned the Diaspora Commission’s programs to facilitate home ownership and investment opportunities.

Dabiri-Erewa emphasised the need for collaboration between Nigerians at home and those living abroad to change the narrative about Africa through initiatives like the upcoming diaspora investment summit being organized by NiDCOM.

Toyin Umesiri, a global influencer and CEO of Nazaru, emphasised the importance of wealth creation and productivity in building economies, rather than focusing solely on poverty alleviation.

She discussed the challenges of promoting business and trade with Africa, particularly in the US, and stressed the need for individuals to take control of their own narratives.

Umesiri also highlighted her background in education and experience in training entrepreneurs and working with investors.

She argued against focusing on poverty alleviation and foreign aid, stressing the need to prioritise skills for sustaining economies, attracting investment, and creating wealth.

Also speaking, Prof. Akil Khalfani, the Director, Africana Institute, Essex County College, Newark, New Jersey, emphasised the need for a rethinking of journalism and media representation, advocating a Pan African approach that utilizes a historical foundation to tell the story of Africa and African people.

Khalfani criticised the Euro-centric approach to education and suggested that African history and culture should be presented with a broader perspective.

Khalfani also highlighted the significance of African organizations and the need for Africa-centered strategies and critiques of other perspectives.

He stressed the importance of Africanizing ways of doing business, global commerce, and thinking about identity.

Mr. Simon Kolawole, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Cable Newspapers, in his presentation, made a strong case for the empowerment of media of people of African descent for effective global outreach.

The highly respected columnist stressed that currently, Media of people of African descent were grappling with serious challenges that were constraining their operations and ability to compete at the global level.

Dr. Adeola Popoola, President, Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation, NIDO, New Jersey, proposed a stronger hold on the Guild of Editors to ensure all media houses contribute to a weekly digest of news headlines across the continent.

Ibe, however, thanked everyone for their participation and expressed his gratitude for the insightful discussions, mentioning that there would be a sequel in the future, especially as the issue was so crucial that it could not be sufficiently addressed at one sitting.

Some Point of Sale, PoS, agents in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, have frowned at the new directive of the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC, for them to register with the commission.

CAC had on Monday issued a two-month registration deadline to PoS operators to register their agents, merchants, and individuals with the commission in line with legal requirements and the directives of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

The agents, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Abuja on Wednesday, said the registration which would require money would impact on transaction cost paid by customers.

Mr Kofi Kolawole, a PoS agent, said the registration would deplete the profits in the business.

Kolawole said the registration would also discourage people from entering the business.

“I know that this registration, when actualised by our operators will increase the amount they charge us.

“This means that the cost we charge on each transaction will increase, so our customers will bear the cost,’’ he said.

Another PoS agent, Mr Clement Agbasi, said the directive negated the financial inclusion initiative of the CBN.

Agbasi said that directive would cause many customers to save their cash at home rather than being charged heavily for their online transactions.

“The PoS business was geared toward bringing the banks closer to the unbanked and making it easier for them.

“With all these charges including the 0.5 per cent cyber-security levy on customers, many people will be discouraged from putting their monies in banks,’’ he said.

Miss Loretta Ubong, another PoS agent, said that although the registration was a welcome development, it must be done in a way that would not be detrimental to businesses.

Ubong appealed to CAC to conduct the registration in line with best practices.

“I am a student and I use the proceed from this business to pay my bills.

“The commission should not do the registration in a way that will kill my business,’’ she said.

However, Mrs. Ndidiamaka Ibe, a customer said the registration would help to check financial frauds and sharp practices perpetrated with PoS.

“I was a victim of one-chance and my over two million naira was withdrawn from a PoS.

“When I got to my bank, they could not trace the owner of the PoS.

“I think that what the Federal Government is trying to do is to check things like this so that when fraud is perpetrated by a PoS agent, he or she can be easily traced,’’ she said.

CAC had said that the registration was aimed at safeguarding businesses of Fintech’s customers and strengthening the economy.

The commission had given July 7 as deadline for the registration.

The two suspects, according to the spokesman of the police in Ogun State, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, were arrested on November 30, 2022 by men of the Federal Highway Patrol, who were on stop and search duty along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The vehicle was stopped by the policemen for routine check at about 11:30 pm, but while the officers were asking questions from one of them who drove the car, the two brothers who were the occupants suddenly abandoned the car and took to their heels.

They were hotly chased and apprehended by the policemen, who took them to Ewu-Oliwo divisional headquarters for proper interrogation.

On interrogation, the two brothers who live at No 2, Onifade Street, Fagba, Lagos, confessed to have stolen the car from one Bello Muyideen Kolawole of Arobaba Street, Idimu, Lagos.

Upon their confession, the DPO Ewu-Oliwo division, CSP Toyosi Bello, quickly got in touch with the said owner, who confirmed that the two brothers were working at a car wash very close to his shop, and that he took the car to the place for wash, only for the two brothers to run away with it.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Bankole, has directed that the two suspects be transferred to State Criminal Investigation Departments, for onward transfer to Lagos state Command, where the crime was originally committed.

Kogi House of Assembly has been gutted by fire in the early hours of Monday.

The incident took the guards by surprise.

Security personnel watching over the complex told the Speaker of the House who visited the scene “all we saw was heavy smoke coming out of the complex this morning.”

“By the time we rushed to see what exactly was the problem, the entire assembly was already on fire with everything inside burnt down.

“We then raised an alarm as we shouted for help even though the complex is in a lonely place with neighbours far away.”

The guards said that the cause of the fire incident remained a mystery to them as they didn’t see the person or persons that set the complex ablaze.

The area most affected by the fire is the assembly gallery, which was completely burnt to ashes.

The Speaker of the House, Mr Mathew Kolawole, who spoke to journalists at the assembly complex, expressed shock over the incident.

Kolawale described the incident as “very unfortunate”.

“I’m assuring you that this attack on our complex will not stop the House from performing its duty.

“We shall dig into its root until the truth is revealed,” he affirmed.

The Speaker, however, said that the House would allow security agencies to investigate the fire incident to ascertain the root cause and level of damage.
