Prof. Fatai Fehintola, Consultant Physician at College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, UI, has urged Nigerians to maintain healthy kidney by constantly taking water and fluid, especially during hot weather.

Fehintola gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Friday in Ibadan.

He explained that inadequate water in the body could cause dehydration, as people would easily be tired and sometimes might feel a bit uncomfortable and irritable.

The consultant physician suggested the intake of a cup of water, 200 to 250 mills at an hour, and two hours intervals, depending on how an individual feels and the environment he/she lives in.

He said hot weather could affect proper functioning of the body, as people lose lots of water and some salt in such weather circumstances.

According to him, when water is not enough, the body cells begin to malfunction, while the organs also do extra work to ensure proper amount of water in the body.

Fehintola emphasised that lots of water could be lost due to heat and sweating, as the kidney which filtered waste from the body continues to regulate the amount of water in the body.

He said “most people will observe that their urine looks concentrated, close to brown, beyond the usual colour, this is because the kidneys are trying to conserve the remaining water in the body.

“People might be passing urine less frequently, so to help the normal body functions, one should ensure to replace the water being lost due to heat.

“Also, taking some fruits that have elements of water such as watermelon, orange, can help,” he said.

Another Consultant Physician at UI and UCH, Ibadan, Dr Yemi Raji, said that excessive heat had affected global temperature and depleted the ozone layer, with consequences on people’s health.

The consultant physician said one of the main problems that might be associated with excessive heat is heat stroke, where the individual becomes dehydrated and tired.

He emphasised that the situation was common among the elderly.

Raji, also a Nephrologist, explained that the situation, if not well taken care of, could lead to shutting down of body organs, one of which is the kidney.

He said “if the kidney lacks water, it can shut down and if nothing is done on time, it can lead to kidney failure.

“Heat stroke can also affect various metabolic processes in the body.”

For the prevention of heat stroke, the nephrologist advised that people should always stay indoors, except when necessary for them to go out.

He suggested an appropriate cooling system when indoors, emphasising that “people must take a lot of water so that their organs, particularly the kidney, will be hydrated to reduce risk of kidney failure.

“The dusty, heat weather has a lot of impact on people’s health, especially the allergic ones, so people who have asthma may experience more attack.

“People should use their face masks to prevent dust and viral infections when going out,” he said.

A public health expert, Dr Thomson Nduka, has said that the prevalence of chronic kidney disease, CKD, is rising, yet it is under diagnosed in the country.

Nduka, on Saturday, in Abuja, said that as many as 90 per cent of Nigerians who had CKD did not know they had the disease until it was in advance stage.

According to him, the good news is that the earlier you find out you have kidney disease, the sooner you can take steps to protect your kidneys from further damage.

He said that protecting the kidneys would allow a person to continue to work, spend time with their family and friends, stay physically active, and do other things.

The expert said that every 30 minutes, the kidneys filtered all the blood in the body.

According to him, about 800 million people worldwide suffered from a progressive and often fatal deterioration of the organs.

He urged Nigerians to protect their kidneys by getting tested, stating that early kidney disease usually had no symptoms.

He said getting tested was, therefore, the best way to know how their kidneys were working.

“Finding out if your kidneys are struggling before you have symptoms gives you the opportunity to make changes to help keep your kidneys healthier for longer.

“Even if you have symptoms, you can take steps to slow the disease,” he explained.

He said that even if people felt healthy; if they were over 60 or had risk factors like diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease, they should consider speaking with their doctor about getting tested for kidney disease.

“Your doctor can use your test results to work with you to develop a kidney care plan. Having a plan may reduce your risk for serious health problems, like heart attack and stroke, and give you more healthy moments,” he said.

According to him, high blood glucose levels could cause your kidneys to work harder, increasing the risk of chronic kidney disease.

He said those who had type 2 diabetes should talk to their doctors about regular kidney screenings which he described as the key to early detection and treatment.

March 9 is World Kidney Day, and the theme for this year is: “Preparing for the unexpected, supporting the vulnerable”.

It is said to “seek to educate people on the impact of disastrous events on people with kidney disease as it affects their access to healthcare services.”

Non-communicable diseases like diabetes, hypertension and kidney disease, are said to have taken the lead in the causes of death worldwide, especially in developing countries.

The people are also said to be vastly affected by incidences of disasters.

In this regard, Nigerians are advised to take care of their kidneys by imbibing kidney-friendly habits – good hydration, routine kidney function tests, avoiding excessive consumption of salts and unjustified use of medications.

A Consultant Nephrologist, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Dr Yemi Raji, has advised Nigerians to embrace prevention as the best treatment for kidney problems.

Raji gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Ibadan on Thursday.

He spoke on the 2023 World Kidney Day celebration.

According to him, kidney disease had become a huge burden all over the world and Nigeria with its growing economy was not left out.

He put the prevalence rate of the disease at between 16 per cent and 26 per cent at the community level.

“But chronic kidney disease accounts for eight per cent to 10 per cent of all medical admissions.

“I have observed over the last decade that the burden of the disease has increased more in our environment.

“So, as part of reducing this burden all over the world, every year, world kidney day is commemorated on the second Thursday of every March.

“The purpose is to create awareness about kidney disease, the problem and causes and how to prevent it.

“For this year, the theme is ‘Kidney health for all: Preparing for the unexpected and supporting the vulnerable.’

“We have a lot of vulnerable people in our community, such as the motherless, refugees and Internally Displaced Persons.

“We are taking the message to them to educate them on kidney disease and how they can prevent it.”

“In our environment, kidney disease is a big burden, particularly, if the kidney has been damaged completely.

“People need to start going for dialysis or kidney transplantation, which is very expensive.

“So, how many people can afford this?

“That is why we must find a way to prevent rather than treat.

“This is why prevention is quite important,” Raji said.

He, therefore, admonished sufferers of diabetes and hypertension or other ailments that could cause kidney disease to go to appropriate places where they could get treatment.

Raji said that there were a lot of things people indulge in that could cause kidney disease, including the abuse of painkiller drugs.

“People go to the pharmacy and chemists to buy all sorts of painkillers and this has a bad effect on their kidney or damages it.

“People should avoid self-medication.

“They should go to hospital, whenever they are sick.

“People should also learn to take a lot of water because it helps the kidney. They should also reduce their salt intake and as much as possible take lots of fruits,” he said.

Raji further advised people to avoid packaged foods and to visit hospitals regularly and not only when they are very sick.

“Government is not doing enough and, of course, can’t do it alone.

“That is why it is good to do preventive care.

“If the government comes to support, they should make dialysis free to reduce the burden suffered by people with the disease,” Raji said.

The Director, University of Ilorin Health Services, Dr Rasheed Odunola, has advised people to beware of foamy urine because it is a sign of kidney disease.

Seek medical help if your urine is foamy, he said.

Odunola, who gave the advice at a news conference in Ilorin on Monday, encouraged the university community and the public to always take care of their kidneys.

He explained that foamy urine on a regular basis might be a warning sign of kidney disease.

According to him, the kidneys might be leaking protein in the urine, which could cause foamy urine.

He advised people to manage their blood sugar, blood pressure, maintain healthy diet and weight, drink enough water and reduce salt intake.

He also advised limiting alcohol intake and abstaining from smoking, and most importantly avoiding self-medication to prevent kidney failure.

The director, who identified the kidney as one of the most important organs in the human body, said “the organ is responsible for removing excess water and toxins from the blood in form of urine, controlling blood pressure, producing red blood cells.

“The kidneys carefully control the salt and water in the body and keep bones healthy, among others.’’

He listed symptoms of kidney disease to include trouble sleeping, feeling the need to urinate often, having trouble concentrating or feeling tired unnecessarily, among others.

The expert, therefore, appealed to government at all levels to subsidise the treatment of kidney disease “to help people who are battling with it.’’

He urged government to buy more kidney dialysis machines for public hospitals and train health officials on how to use them, saying that “this will go a long way in alleviating the sufferings of masses.’’

Dialysis machine is used to filter a patient’s blood to remove excess water and waste products when the kidneys are damaged, dysfunctional.

Dialysis machine mixes and monitors the dialysate.

Dialysate is the fluid that helps to remove unwanted waste products from your blood.

It also helps get electrolytes and minerals to their proper levels in the body.

Medical Imaging Scientist, Dr. Livinus Abonyi, has said that adequate water intake will help kidneys to function more efficiently and prevent kidney stones.

Abonyi, also a lecturer, Department of Medical Radiography, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, University of Lagos, College of Medicine, spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Thursday in Lagos.

According to him, any person who drinks water regularly is likely to look healthier and succulent than one who drinks water sparingly.

“H2O – two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen, also known as water, is one of the most essential elements to health.

“And, it’s so important that body actually has a specific drought management system in place to prevent dehydration and ensure survival.

“Water is essential to kidney functions; adequate water intake helps your kidneys work more efficiently and helps to prevent kidney stones.

“And on normal circumstance, an individual is expected to take three litres of water (on average) per day.

“However, the amount of water you need depends on a variety of factors: the climate you live in, how physically active you are, and whether you’re experiencing an illness or have any other health problems – all affect recommended intake.

“Diabetic, hypertensive and renal stone patients are expected to increase their intake of water, as well as all elderly people because their body are becoming more toxic,” he said.

The scientist advised people to endeavour to excrete waste products, particularly urine as and when due, saying that water helps to flush out infection through excretions.

He explained that a person who holds urine was likely to suffer more infection/infectious diseases than one who urinates immediately he/she feels like to urinate.

“Water makes up more than two thirds of human body weight, and without water, one could die in few days.

“You need water to replenish the lost fluid from sweat. You also need enough water in your system to have healthy stool and avoid constipation.

“Your kidneys are also important for filtering out waste through urination.

“Believe it or not, your body weight is about 60 per cent water, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. A mere two per cent drop in our body’s water supply can trigger signs of dehydration.

“The human body uses water in all its cells, organs, and tissues to help regulate temperature and maintain other bodily functions.

“Because, the body loses water through breathing, sweating, and digestion; it’s important to rehydrate by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water,” he advised.

A medical doctor with the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Gbenga Adebusoye, has warned that abuse of paracetamol in general and in tenderising meat in particular, could lead to liver and kidney failures.

Dr Adebusoye gave the warning in a telephone interview with News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Thursday.

He said drugs were chemicals and should not be taken lightly and when abused, they could be toxic to the human system and could endanger lives.

According to him, the abuse of paracetamol leads to rapid damage of the liver, which can cause acute liver injury that could result in liver failure that cannot be managed except by a liver transplant.

The medical expert said that paracetamol should not be used to tenderise meat and for any other purpose, asides its clinical use and the specified dosage as its abuse was highly detrimental to health.

He said that drugs were usually meant to be stored in places with cool temperatures not above 25 degrees Celsius.

He said if drugs were not properly stored and left in places with high temperature, the act could damage the content of the drugs, making it less potent.

He said there was the possibility of chemical reactions that could be dangerous and harmful, turning the drug from a useful substance to a harmful one.

Dr Adebusoye, therefore, advised people to desist from the abuse of drugs in general as such act could be very fatal.

NAN reports that some food vendors and caterers in the country have been understood to be using paracetamol tablets to tenderise tough meat.

Others even use table spoons, nails and potassium to cook food.

Some food vendors in Jos denied making use of paracetamol in tenderising their meats, but some admitted to using potassium in tenderising cowhide (Pomo) and beans.
