The All Progressives Congress, APC, has denied ever giving money to suspected kidnapper, Hamisu Bala Wadume, over the February 23, 2019 presidential election.

The party said Wadume must have been making the claim as a desperate man, having come face to face with justice over his alleged involvement in criminal activities.

Remember that three policemen were killed by soldiers in Taraba State over efforts to arrest Wadume who was wanted for alleged cases of kidnapping.

Under arrest, Wadume was said to have claimed that the ruling APC gave him N13 million during the last general election.

He was also quoted as saying that Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State gave him N6 million for the elections.

But denying the claims, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, said the era of giving money to thugs had ceased with the ousting of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

He said his party did not have any budget for that.

His words: “It is expected that the alleged kidnapper, having come face to face with justice, would throw whatever he could lay his hands on into the fray.

“In any case, our party did not have budget for thugs. Unlike the period when the ruling party dipped hands into the public treasury to fund political campaigns and elections, APC had to rely on its own resources. Even if we had all the money, we would never allocate money for kidnappers and murderers. That era ended with PDP.

“Perhaps, he can name whoever gave him money. Definitely, it was not APC. From his purported confession, he claimed to be a PDP member before he went on to contest under another party.”

Two civilians were also killed while five other persons were injured by the soldiers.

The arrest was announced by the Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba, in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday.

Wadume was said to have been arrested Monday night at his hideout at Layin Mai Allo Hotoro area of Kano State, after painstaking efforts by the police.

The arrest has attracted the commendation of the Inspector General of Police, Muhammad Adamu, who expressed the belief that the success would “help in bringing answers to the numerous but hitherto unanswered questions touching on the incident and the larger criminal enterprise of the suspect.”

It would be recalled that some soldiers attacked and killed some policemen who had successfully arrested Wadume in Taraba State.

The Nigerian Army, giving excuse for the murder, claimed that the policemen refused to stop at three checking points, so, its men had to open fire on them.

The police had since pooh-poohed the claim of the Army, saying that the soldiers knew of the mission of the policemen but deliberately killed them for ulterior motives.

Findings have since confirmed complicity of some soldiers in the murder.

The statement by the police over the arrest of Wadume reads in full:

POLICE RE-ARREST NOTORIOUS KIDNAP KINGPIN ALHAJI HAMISU BALA WADUME

The operatives of the Nigeria Police have re-arrested the notorious kidnap kingpin, Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume.

He was re-arrested in the late hours of yesterday, 19th August, 2019 in his hideout at Layin Mai Allo Hotoro area of Kano State.

It would be recalled that the Police had been on the massive manhunt for the suspect, Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume since 6th August, 2019 following the unfortunate incident in Ibi, Taraba State which resulted in the brutal murder of three (3) Police Officers and two (2) civilians, and injury to five (5) others. The suspect, who was appropriately restrained at the time of the incident, was subsequently released by his “rescuers” after they had destroyed the restraining handcuffs.

Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police, IGP M.A Adamu, NPM,mni while commending the Police operatives for their perseverance and painstaking efforts, has expressed his profound gratitude to all Nigerians for their unparalleled show of love and empathy to the Force and the families of the officers and patriotic civilians who paid the supreme price in the service of their fatherland. It is his belief that the re-arrest of the suspect, Alhaji Hamisu Bala Wadume, will no doubt, help in bringing answers to the numerous but hitherto unanswered questions touching on the incident and the larger criminal enterprise of the suspect.

Five corps members and two other persons kidnapped on Wednesday by gunmen have been rescued by the Nigeria Police Force.

The people were kidnapped on along Owerri-Port Harcourt Expressway.

The corps members who were on their way to the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, camps in Rivers and Akwa Ibom, were taken to Umuapu forest in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State.

The kidnappers, the police said, soon established contact with the families of the corps members, demanding for N5 million.

The Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Dasuki Galadanchi, gave the names of the victims as Abiola Temitope; Olubisi Adekanmi; Jose Temitayo; Folarin Opeyemi and Shonibare Ademola.

Leonard Uzondu and Raymond Ojodahe are the other two persons also kidnapped.

The police said acting on the information they received, the stormed the kidnappers den and rescued the victims.

The police boss, Galadanchi, explained: “The victims were travelling from Ibadan to Port Harcourt.

“Five out of the seven of them are prospective corps members.

“They were on their way to the NYSC orientation camps in Rivers and Akwa Ibom States for the three weeks camping.

“They were kidnapped around 5 a.m. on Wednesday at Umuapu, on the Owerri-Port-Harcourt Expressway.

“The kidnappers took them to a forest and dispossessed them of all their belongings, including money, phones, ATM cards and voter cards.

“They compelled them to call their relatives at home to speak to them.

“Immediately contact was established, they instilled fear in the parents and demanded N5 million for their freedom.

“The operatives went into the bush and on sighting the officers, the kidnappers abandoned their victims and fled.

“We rescued them unhurt, but the hoodlums made away with their valuables.
