Prominent Nigerians, including renowned banker and philanthropist, Alhaji Abdulfatai Akin Kekere-Ekun, were on Saturday, December 13, 2025 inaugurated as members of the Board of Trustees of the newly established Ansar-ud-Deen Foundation.

The colourful inauguration took place at the MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos, and was attended by top Islamic scholars, professionals, traditional leaders and members of the Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria and Overseas.

Other trustees inaugurated alongside Kekere-Ekun include Alhaji Sulaimon Adedokun; Alhaja Kafilat Araoye; Mallam Yusuf Ali, SAN; Dr. (Mrs.) Mosun Belo-Olusoga; Alhaji Abdulfatah Babatunde Bank-Anthony; and Alhaji Rabiu Isyaku Rabiu.

In his address, the President of Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria and Overseas, Prince Mosediq Adeniji Kazeem, SAN, described the inauguration as “a historic milestone” in the over 100-year journey of the Society.

“This Foundation represents the continuation of our Society’s century-long journey of faith, knowledge and service to humanity,” Kazeem said, adding that “It is built on the vision of our founding fathers, who believed that education, moral discipline and service to mankind are the keys to the progress of the Muslim community.”

He explained that the Ansar-ud-Deen Foundation was created as a transparent and sustainable platform to support the society’s religious, educational, welfare and developmental programmes.

According to him, the Foundation aims to build a ₦20 billion legacy endowment fund that will be used to rehabilitate mosques, improve Ansar-ud-Deen schools, support Summit University, Offa, and fund health, welfare and empowerment programmes across the country.

“Our mosques must be welcoming and well-maintained. We must be proud of any Ansar-ud-Deen mosque we visit,” the President said. “This Foundation will ensure that every donation is properly managed, transparently reported and invested in halal and ethical ventures for long-term benefit.”

Kazeem charged the newly inaugurated trustees to see their appointment as a sacred trust.

“You have been entrusted with a serious amanah,” he said. “I charge you to uphold the highest standards of transparency and accountability, ensure that all investments are halal, and develop innovative ways for people across the world to support this noble cause.”

He added that the success of the Foundation would depend on the collective support of all members of the Society.

“This Foundation belongs to all of us. Let us contribute our resources, time and prayers, because the best of people are those who are most beneficial to mankind,” he said.

Also speaking, the Chief Missioner of Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Sheikh Abdulrahman Olanrewaju Ahmad, urged the trustees to remain faithful to Islamic principles in managing the Foundation.

He warned against raising funds through means that are not in line with Islamic teachings.

“Allah is pure and He will not accept anything except that which is pure,” the Chief Missioner said. “This Foundation is important because it will support dawah, education and community development in a halal and sustainable way.”

Sheikh Ahmad explained that the idea of the Foundation was rooted in the Islamic concept of waqf (endowment), which allows charitable works to continue benefiting people long after the donor is gone.

“This is a cheap ticket to the hereafter, and not an economy ticket but a first-class one,” he said, drawing applause from the audience. “Through waqf, we can build institutions that will outlive us and continue to serve humanity.”

He prayed for divine guidance and strength for the trustees, adding that no contribution was too small. “This is not for the rich alone. Everyone can contribute, because all of us desire a better future for our community,” he said.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Kekere-Ekun who is also the husband of the country’s Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, while accepting the responsibility on behalf of members, pledged that the Foundation would operate with “absolute transparency, honesty, discipline and accountability,” and focus on supporting projects in health, education and welfare as approved by the society.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on legal practitioners and civil rights groups in the West African community to dedicate efforts towards pursuing an inclusive legal system that will protect, strengthen the rights and ensure equal access to justice for all individuals in member states, regardless of their background or circumstances.

The governor said the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, should be the beacon for other regional bodies in the administration of justice and show exemplary leadership in protecting the rights of the populace seeking justice.

Sanwo-Olu said only when officers at the temple of justice come together and dedicate themselves to the rule of law would ECOWAS truly build a peaceful, thriving and inclusive community where opportunities would be abundant and people’s rights safeguarded.

The governor delivered the keynote address at the opening session of the two-day sensitisation mission organised by ECOWAS Court of Justice.

The event, holding at Eko Hotels and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos, is being attended by ECOWAS judges, legal professionals and civil society groups across the West African community.

Sanwo-Olu told the participants to contribute their ideas to discussions with a collective sense of purpose, urging them to use the forum to promote justice, enhance regional ties and tap into the incredible potential abound in the sub-region.

He said: “Today’s gathering reflects the spirit of collaboration and resolution as we join forces to strengthen our institutions and bring justice closer to the people we serve. We understand that the contemporary challenges we face, whether related to security, economic growth or human rights, demand collaboration, innovation, and a firm dedication to the principles of justice and equity.

READ ALSO: Oyo: Makinde carries out minor cabinet reshuffle

“The presence of the ECOWAS Court in Lagos not only highlights the city’s crucial role in regional matters but also serves as a strong reminder that justice should be accessible, visible and responsive to the needs of our people. Through outreach initiatives and external court sessions, we are bringing the mechanisms of regional justice closer to our citizens, improving public understanding of the court’s mission, and strengthening the connections between our national institutions and the ECOWAS Court.

“Let us renew our commitment to safeguarding human rights, bolstering legal systems, and ensuring that everyone, especially the most vulnerable, has access to justice. By encouraging collaboration and leveraging innovative partnerships, we can tackle the urgent challenges our region faces and make sure that the ideals of equity, peace and prosperity are a reality for every citizen.”

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos had been a vital hub for trade, investment and cultural exchange, noting that the state embodied the spirit of unity and progress which ECOWAS represented.

The governor said the choice of hosting the event in Lagos highlighted collective dedication to enhancing regional integration, reinforcing the rule of law, while ensuring access to justice for West Africa citizens.

ECOWAS Community Court President, Hon. Justice Ricardo Gonçalves, said the long period during which justice was seen as distant, slow or inaccessible should be over, stressing that justice should not be an ornament reserved for the elite.

He said: “Justice should not be a distant dream out of sight and out of reach. Justice is the birthright of all citizens, from the busiest cities to the most remote villages. Justice hidden is justice denied. When a farmer is denied a fair hearing because of distance; when a child grows up believing that the law and justice are beyond their reach, then we, as guardians of justice, will have failed to uphold our oath.

“So we must join forces to make justice a reality for everyone: the farmer in the countryside, the shopkeeper in the market, the mother in the village and the young people in the city. Our mission is clear: to restore hope, build bridges and serve justice where it is most needed — at the grassroots.”

Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, said the sensitisation mission had become a platform to reaffirm legal professionals’ commitment to the rule of law, regional integration and the role of the judiciary in upholding justice across our sub-region.

She noted that ECOWAS Court stood as a pillar of accountability and a guardian of rights within the West African Community, pointing out that the sensitisation programme sought to deepen public awareness of the court’s mandate and to foster a broader appreciation of the relevance of ECOWAS Community law.

“Judicial cooperation is the cornerstone of legal integration in any regional community. Within ECOWAS, where the ideals of free movement, economic development, and political stability are essential goals, our legal systems must operate in harmony. No single national judiciary can effectively respond to the challenges of cross-border crimes, regional disputes, or transnational human rights concerns.

“The collaboration between national courts and the ECOWAS Court is indispensable. It enhances the interpretation and consistent application of ECOWAS legal instruments and facilitates cooperation in the fight against corruption, terrorism, and trafficking. It also ensures that individuals and businesses are afforded credible access to justice when faced with regional legal challenges and provides the framework for resolving cross-border commercial and human rights disputes in a fair and predictable manner,” she said.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, Chief Justice of Nigeria Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), and several other stakeholders in the legal profession are expected to grace the launch of a book chronicling the judicial career of former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola.

The book, titled “Honourable Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, CJN, GCON: Through the Cases,” is co-authored by senior lawyers, Dr Charles Mekwunye (SAN) and Ayo Olanrewaju, the Deputy Editor-in-Chief and Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Nigerian Weekly Law Reports, NWLR.

Mekwunye, who spoke in Lagos ahead of the book launch scheduled for May 8 in Abuja, shared that the book provides a comprehensive exploration of Justice Ariwoola’s years of service in Nigeria’s appellate courts, highlighting his significant contributions to the development of the nation’s jurisprudence.

According to Mekwunye, the book critically examines Justice Ariwoola’s judgments, shedding light on his judicial philosophy and impact, thus shedding lights on who Justice Ariwoola is through his judicial activities.

He emphasized that Justice Ariwoola, known for his adherence to legal precedent, never delivered a dissenting judgment throughout his career yet advanced legal principles through his consensus opinions.

Explaining this, the Senior Advocate said; “What we found so unique and interesting about him is that he never delivered a dissenting judgement. When we inquired to know why this happened, it was discovered that he had actually taken a minority position many times but other majority voices in judgements at the end of the day deferred to him and his minority position finally adopted as the majority judgement.”

Mekwunye described Justice Ariwoola as a courageous judge who always pursued the path of justice during his time at the Supreme Court.

He compared Ariwoola to legendary jurists such as Lord Denning and Lord Viscount Simmonds, noting that while he is not a reformist like Lord Denning, he also does not possess the ultra-conservative views of Lord Viscount Simmonds but he noted that Justice Ariwoola can best be described as a conservative judge.

Furthermore, Mekwunye highlighted that the book reveals Justice Ariwoola’s character and ethos, making it a valuable reference for judges and aspiring judges, as it discusses many landmark cases he decided.

“His lordship, Justice Ariwoola is a fearless, strong-willed, and incorruptible jurist—a consummate legal expert who has diligently and meticulously provided invaluable service to Nigeria through his judicial pronouncements and administrative competence.

“His vast experience in the study and practice of law, spanning over four decades, has made him a reservoir of knowledge,” Mekwunye stated.

According to him, the book launch which will hold in Abuja on Thursday, May 8, will have in attendance who is who in the legal profession in Nigeria, top judicial officer including the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Chairman of Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, and a host of others.

Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed confidence that the new Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, will not see the judiciary as just an arm of government but as a gatekeeper of justice, protector of the rights of the citizens, and defender of the constitution.

The governor said the tenure of Justice Kekere-Ekun as the Chief Justice of Nigeria will be marked by the sharp intellect, depth of insight, and unwavering commitment to the spirit of the law for which she built a lifelong reputation, noting that her ascension to the highest judicial office in Nigeria spoke powerfully to the boundless potential of women and to the fact that excellence in leadership knew no gender.

Governor Sanwo-Olu spoke on Saturday night during a special dinner held in honour of Justice Kekere-Ekun, the second female Chief Justice of Nigeria, at Lagos House, Marina.

The dinner was attended by Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun; First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu; Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat; former Lagos State Governor and Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola; Justice Kekere-Ekun’s husband, Mr. Akin Kekere-Ekun; Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Prince Lateef Fagbemi; Justices of Supreme Court; Judges from Court of Appeal and federal and state high courts; legal practitioners; traditional and political leaders, among others.

Speaking during the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the dinner, where two Lagosians, Justice Habeeb Abiru of the Supreme Court and Justice Lawal Akapo of the Court of Appeal, were also celebrated for their recent elevation, was a celebration of the place of Lagos in the development of jurisprudence in Nigeria, noting that Lagos had produced many of the finest legal minds Nigeria had seen on the Bar and the Bench.

He said, “We celebrate not only your achievements but the significance of your leadership for every woman in Nigeria, for every young girl who dreams of a life of impact. Your ascension speaks powerfully to the boundless potential of women and to the fact that excellence in leadership knows no gender.

“Justice Kekere-Ekun ascension to the highest judicial office in the land tells every young girl, every aspiring woman leader in our nation, that they too can achieve the very best, that they can lead, decide, and redefine what is possible.

“At a time when Nigeria faces many challenges, your leadership of the judiciary is a steadying force and a comforting presence, one that will bring renewed strength to the pursuit of justice, equity, and fairness.

“Beyond the law, you have been a role model for many, embodying dignity, humility, and strength. As you carry forward this sacred duty, may you find strength in your roots, may you draw inspiration from the legacy of all who have come before you, may you raise judicial standards to unprecedented heights, and may you continue to lead with integrity and vision.

“I am pleased to note that Justice Kekere-Ekun has made judicial welfare one of the pillars of her leadership of the Supreme Court, and I have no doubt in my mind that the Lagos reform model will serve as a credible template for national judicial reform. We are indeed proud to have a daughter of Lagos spearheading what will no doubt come to be known as a golden age for the Nigerian judicial system.

“All of us who are in positions of leadership in the three arms of government, as we wine and dine tonight, let us strengthen our resolve to play our part in deepening collaboration, to strengthen this cherished democracy of ours.”

Speaking earlier, Justice Kekere-Ekun, who said she is deeply touched by the show of love by the Lagos State government, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu and the previous governors for their commitment to the judiciary and infrastructure.

Justice Kekere-Ekun promised to uphold the rights of people and ensure equity and justice as the Chief Justice of Nigeria. “My recent appointment as the Chief Justice of Nigeria is a role I did not take lightly. Indeed, I appreciate that I have a very heavy responsibility on my shoulders. It is a call to lead, inspire, and champion the integrity of our judiciary. I am committed to upholding the high standard of our judiciary, promoting judicial independence, and fostering an environment where the rule of law prevails,” she said.

Also speaking, Governor Dapo Abiodun, ex-Governor Babatunde Fashola, and other speakers praised Justice Kekere-Ekun for her courage and high level of integrity both at the Bar and the Bench, especially as a Judge at Magistrate Court, High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court before being appointed as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Justice Kudirat Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun took the oath of office as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, on Monday, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reaffirming his administration’s commitment to upholding the judiciary’s independence and sanctity.

Kekere-Ekun, the second female CJN in Nigeria’s history, was sworn in following her confirmation by the Senate.

The ceremony occurred at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja.

Four former chief justices of the federation, including the first female Justice, Aloma Mukhtar, the president of the Court of Appeal, and other heads of the judiciary divisions, witnessed it.

President Tinubu underscored the pivotal role of the judiciary in safeguarding Nigeria’s constitutional democracy.

“The judiciary is an important pillar constituting the tripod that holds our constitutional democracy. Indeed, the Nigerian judiciary, at various times in history, has proven to be the moderating force ensuring everyone remains in check.

”Your role as the last hope of the common man serves to sustain our people’s confidence in democracy, knowing well that there is an important arbiter that can always give them redress if they are wronged.

”For this function, it is important that our judiciary remains truly independent. It is my administration’s total commitment to preserve the sanctity of the judiciary.

”While we may have reasons to interface as complementing components of the same government, under my watch, the government will also be mindful of the clear line demarcating the two of us.

”We will never interfere or abuse the relationship between us as separate organs of government in our democracy. This is important for sustaining our constitutional democracy, ” the president said.

President Tinubu reiterated his government’s dedication to improving judicial officers’ welfare and working conditions, noting recent decisions to enhance their effectiveness in administering justice.

He urged Justice Kekere-Ekun to continue upholding the principles of ethical leadership, fearlessness, and honesty that have defined her career.

”The Nigerian judiciary needs a leader with these qualities at this time, and I have no doubt that you will set the pace for others to follow,” he said.

READ ALSO: What we’ve done to ensure quality, regular power supply –Minister

The president lauded Justice Kekere-Ekun’s rise as a testament to hard work and an inspiration to women, particularly young girls, in a male-dominated profession.

”This day has also cemented the judiciary as a self-evolving and progressive institution. I specifically congratulate the Nigerian women. Any girl child can dream big and have her dreams come true. It is worth celebrating,” he said.

President Tinubu also acknowledged the presence of Justice Kekere-Ekun’s 89-year-old mother, Mama Wilfred Layiwola Ogundimu (Nee Savage), and other family members led by Akin Kekere-Ekun, Justice Kekere-Ekun’s husband.

The president commended the Senate for expediting the confirmation of the new CJN and thanked members of the judiciary for their continued support.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, former Chief Justices of Nigeria, justices of the Supreme Court, senior judicial officers, and members of the Federal Executive Council attended the event.

The Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has vowed to elevate the judiciary to new heights, improve its reputation, and sustain public confidence in the judicial system.

Kekere-Ekun made the vow on Friday shortly after she was sworn in by President Bola Tinubu as the 23rd CJN, and the second woman to occupy the post.

The approval of the president is pending the confirmation by the Senate.

Her words: ”We will make sure that people have more confidence in the judiciary, and I believe that it is not a one-man job. We all have to be on board because we all see the areas that are in need of improvement.

”I believe that there will be maximum cooperation because we all want to see a better judiciary.

”A better judiciary is for the benefit of the entire nation. Whatever the shortcomings that we see today are, we are all members of the society so, if we want to see a better society, if we want to see improvement, let the improvement start with each and every one of us and our approach to justice.

”Let us all have faith in the system and then also be particular about the process of appointment, I know it is a source of a lot of concern; the issue of discipline on the bench and at the bar as well.

”All of these things are aspects that we will look into and I believe that by the grace of God, at the end of my tenure, we should be able to have a judiciary that we will all be proud of.”

During the swearing in which took place at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja, President Tinubu urged Kekere-Ekun to defend the independence of the judiciary and promote the cause of justice.

The president emphasized the importance of strengthening mechanisms that would uphold and enhance integrity, discipline, and transparency in the judiciary.

”Undoubtedly, the position of the Chief Justice of Nigeria comes with enormous responsibilities as the head of all judicial institutions in the country. It is a position of considerable influence that demands temperance and sobriety.

”The occupant of the office must exude the highest level of integrity in the discharge of their duties. This is more so because of the finality of the Supreme Court’s judgments.

”I, therefore, urge your Lordship to be faithful and loyal to the Constitution when discharging your duty as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.

READ ALSO: ‘Heartbroken’ woman sets self ablaze after divorce

”I also encourage you to defend the judiciary’s independence and always promote the cause of justice. It is vital that you strengthen all mechanisms for integrity, discipline, and transparency in the judicial sector, and pursue other reforms or initiatives to sustain and build public confidence in the judiciary,” the president stated.

President Tinubu also lauded the contributions of Justice Kekere-Ekun to the judiciary, noting that she was coming to the position with an admirable family and professional pedigree.

”Over the years, she has established a respectable and incorruptible reputation within the bar and the bench, which asserts the cause of justice.

”Her meritorious rise from a magistrate to justice of the Supreme Court is a testament to her exceptional talent, hard work, unblemished record, strong work ethic, and dedication to her calling as a priest in the temple of justice.

”Her sterling contribution to the growth of the Nigerian judiciary has been remarkable. We are inspired by her unwavering commitment to a higher ideal of upholding the principles of fairness and a strong commitment to humanity.

”Justice Kekere-Ekun is a brilliant lawyer who was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981. She’s now a trailblazer becoming the second woman to hold this esteemed position after Honourable Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, GCON,” the president said.

President Tinubu noted that the appointment of the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria was an inspiration and a beacon of hope to young women who aspire to break glass ceilings across sectors and seek to make meaningful impact on society.

Reflecting on the roles and evolution of the Nigerian Supreme Court since it was empowered by the 1963 Constitution to take over from the then Judicial Committee of the Privy Council as the highest court, the president noted that the court had played a critical role in resolving complex legal conflicts, even under the military.

He acknowledged the role of the Supreme Court in shaping public policies that impact all segments of society, citing the recent interpretation of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) regarding the financial autonomy of local councils in Nigeria.

Highlighting the expedited passage of the Judicial Autonomy Act of 2024, which increased the remuneration of judicial officers by 300 per cent, President Tinubu assured the judiciary of continued support from his administration in the expeditious improvement of its welfare and capacity.

He cited the appointment of 11 new justices of the Supreme Court in December 2023, which is enabling the court to work efficiently as it attained its full complement of 21 justices for the first time in decades.

”Let me also reassure you that the judiciary under this administration will continue to receive prompt and adequate attention, recognizing its status as a driver of social order, rule of law, peace, security and economic development,” the President said.

President Tinubu also expressed gratitude to the immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, commending him for his 32 years of service to the judiciary and the nation.
