The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, who disclosed this while briefing newsmen, on Monday in Katsina, said the success was part of the command’s ongoing efforts to combat crime.

Sadiq-Aliyu said the command had recorded significant successes in its intensified operations against kidnapping, banditry, cattle rustling, and arms trafficking across the state.

He attributed the achievements to intelligence-led operations, strengthened inter-agency collaborations, and sustained patrols in identified flashpoints.

According to him, the breakdown of arrests shows that 14 suspected armed robbers, two gunrunners, one suspected car thief, five suspected bandit informants, and 14 suspects linked to homicide were apprehended.

He added that 20 suspected rapists and 22 persons involved in illegal drug peddling were also arrested within the period under review.

The PPRO further revealed the arrest of a notorious member of a gang involved in violent crimes, allegedly linked to the killing of one Abu Abbasi, adding that investigations were ongoing.

He said the command also dismantled criminal networks involving informants and gunrunners supplying logistics to bandits in Dutsinma and Safana local government areas.

Sadiq-Aliyu stated that the 12 rescued kidnap victims had received medical attention and were reunited with their families.

He listed items recovered during the operations to include two PKT rifles, two AK-47 rifles, three locally fabricated firearms, two ammunition belts, and 974 rounds of live ammunition.

Others, he said, were 30 stolen animals and five motorcycles used in criminal activities.

The police spokesman said the successes were achieved through targeted raids on criminal hideouts, increased surveillance on major highways, and proactive community policing initiatives.

He commended other security agencies and local communities for their support, noting that joint patrols and real-time intelligence sharing had enhanced operational efficiency.

Sadiq-Aliyu stressed that the fight against crime was ongoing and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property.

The air was cleared in a statement issued in Katsina on Sunday, by Cap. Abayomi Adisa, Acting Assistant Director Army Public Relations, 17 Brigade, Nigerian Army.

Adisa dismissed the viral media reports of internal sabotage and neglect as “deliberately crafted to misinform the public.”

Setting the records straight, the army said the deceased was not a Lieutenant as widely reported, but a corporal enlisted in 2012 under the 67 Regular Recruit Intake.

”The incident that led to his death did not occur within the barracks as speculated, rather, he sustained injuries outside while deployed at the Forward Operating Base in Funtua.

“On Feb. 16, at about 8:30 p.m., Jude, a native of Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, reportedly left his duty post to purchase personal items when he was attacked,” Adisa said in the statement.

However, he explained that preliminary investigations later revealed that the incident stemmed from a physical altercation with a civilian over a personal dispute.

He said that the injured soldier was promptly given first aid before being evacuated to the 17 Brigade Medical Centre, where he received sustained medical attention.

According to the brigade’s spokesperson, the soldier was subsequently relieved of duty to enable full recovery, as medical reports indicated that he suffered stab wounds and other trauma consistent with a violent encounter.

“Inspite of weeks of treatment and clinical monitoring, tragedy struck on March 24, 2026, when he collapsed outside his residence shortly after receiving medical care.

“Jude was rushed back to the Medical Centre but was confirmed dead on arrival,” Adisa said.

He noted that the Garrison Commander personally oversaw key arrangements, including provision of a coffin and mortuary services, while additional institutional support was provided by the 82 Division Garrison in Enugu.

Adisa added that in honour of deceased service, all military accoutrements were handed over to his next of kin, and the family was duly informed in line with standard procedures.

The brigade further maintained that it sustained communication with the bereaved family throughout the period, while security support was also deployed during the burial.

Explaining the delay in public response, he said that it took time to verify facts, consult relevant formations and ensure accurate reporting before issuing an official statement.

He assured that efforts by the brigade to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack were ongoing, vowing that justice would be served.

While mourning the loss of the soldier, the brigade reaffirmed commitment to personnel welfare, professionalism and transparency, urging the public to rely solely on credible and official sources of information.

The incident occurred on Sunday when bandits reportedly blocked the road and opened fire on a moving Volkswagen Golf vehicle, killing two occupants on the spot.

According to a statement in Katsina on Monday by the command spokesman, DSP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, security operatives quickly responded to the attack.

He said a joint team comprising police personnel, military operatives, members of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps and local vigilantes was mobilised to the scene following a distress report.

“The team swiftly dislodged the assailants and evacuated the victims to a nearby hospital.”

According to Sadiq-Aliyu, the bandits later regrouped and attempted to launch another attack on the Musawa Police Division.

He said that officers on duty successfully repelled the assault after a fierce gun battle, preventing the attackers from overrunning the facility.

He explained that during the encounter, one police officer was killed while defending the station.

The Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar-Fage, said  that additional operational assets had been deployed to the affected area to strengthen security and forestall further attacks.

The commissioner also ordered a full-scale investigation aimed at tracking down and arresting the perpetrators.

Umar-Fage expressed condolences to the families of the slain civilians and the fallen officer, describing the latter as a hero who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

He urged residents to remain calm and continue to support security agencies with credible information as efforts intensified to bring those responsible to justice.

In Plateau, the reports said troops of Operation Enduring Peace neutralised three terrorists during an ambush in Wase local government area and foiled an attack on civilians in Shendam, where injured victims were evacuated.

In Borno, it revealed that troops of Operation Hadin Kai thwarted an attempted improvised explosive device, IED, attack along the Konduga–Kawuri Road, neutralising two terrorists and recovering weapons.

According to the report, troops also arrested a suspected terrorist kingpin in Toungo, Adamawa, linked to kidnapping and attacks on security forces, as well as three logistics suppliers and a suspected kidnapper in Borno.

“Under Operation Fansan Yamma, troops rescued 10 kidnap victims in separate operations in Sokoto and Katsina, while also arresting five suspected cattle rustlers in Kebbi and recovering livestock.

“In the South-East, troops recovered and safely detonated four improvised explosive devices in Abia, while arresting suspected cultists and gunrunners in Cross River and Ebonyi states.

“In the Niger Delta, troops intercepted vandalised materials and a vehicle conveying about 900 litres of illegally refined petroleum products in Rivers,” it stated.

The report further revealed that security agencies intervened in a communal clash between Afo natives and Fulani herders in Nasarawa State to prevent escalation.

Military authorities said operations remained ongoing nationwide to sustain pressure on terrorists and other criminal elements.

Operational updates made available indicates that troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai, OPHK, recorded significant successes in Borno.

The report said the troops of 202 Battalion on Tuesday, neutralised two suspected terrorists during an ambush operation on the Aulari–Kawuri axis in Bama local government area.

It said the terrorists were sighted by surveillance cameras advancing towards Yale Forest when troops engaged and eliminated them.

In the North-West, it said the troops of Operation Fansan Yamma recorded operational gains in Zamfara and Katsina states.

According to the report, troops of 1 Brigade Quick Response Force neutralised one terrorist during a fighting patrol in Maru local government area of Zamfara, while recovering seven mobile phones.

“Similarly, troops of 17 Brigade responded to terrorist activities in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina, recovering two pump-action guns and cartridges.

“In a related operation, troops, in collaboration with police and local hunters, repelled terrorists in Malumfashi, forcing them to flee and recovering 19 rustled livestock, which were handed over to local authorities.

“In Kwara, troops under Operation Savannah Shield foiled a kidnap attempt in Patigi local government area, rescuing a victim and arresting two suspected kidnappers, while recovering two single-barrel guns,” it said.

A statement by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Aliyu Abubakar, described the incident as regrettable.

“The Police Command in Katsina regrets to report a stampede incident that occurred during the distribution of annual Ramadan alms at Kofar-Guga quarters, resulting in several people sustaining injuries,” it said on Sunday.

According to him, on February 26, 2026, at about 9 p.m., a distress call was received at the Central Police Station in Katsina about a large crowd gathered at the residence of a philanthropist, situated at Kofar-Guga quarters, Katsina, resulting in a stampede incident.

“Upon receipt of the report, promptly, a team of policemen responded to the scene.

“The rescuers rushed the victims to the nearest hospital for medical attention.

“Unfortunately, four of the injured later succumbed to their injuries.”

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Bello Shehu, extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished those injured a speedy recovery as he directed for further investigation and necessary measures to prevent future occurrences.

He, however, said that the command was calling on individuals who wished to distribute alms to the public to notify the command for adequate security coverage, so as to ensure safety of lives and property and orderliness during such events to prevent similar incidents in the future.

‎It predicted prospects of isolated thunderstorms with light rains over parts of Abia, Imo, Anambra, Edo, Ekiti, Oyo, Ondo, Osun, Ogun, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers and Akwa Ibom states later in the day.

‎‎According to the forecast, moderate dust haze with visibility values between 2km to 5km is anticipated over parts of Kano, Katsina, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Jigawa and Borno states on Monday.

‎‎The agency envisaged the remaining parts of the North  to be sunny and hazy throughout the forecast period.

“For the central region, sunny skies with a few patches of clouds are expected over the region during the forecast period.

‎‎”Cloudy skies with sunny intervals are anticipated over the southern region during morning hours. Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rains are anticipated over parts of Bayelsa, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Rivers and Cross Rivers states,” it said.

‎‎The agency predicted slight dust haze over the North throughout the forecast period on Tuesday.

‎‎It anticipated sunny skies in the central region with a few patches of clouds over the region throughout the forecast period.

‎‎NiMet predicted cloudy skies with sunny intervals  over the southern region in the morning hours.

‎‎It predicted isolated thunderstorms with light rains over parts of Ondo, Edo, Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers states later in the day.

“Driving under rain should be with caution. Airline operators are advised to get airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.

‎”Residents are advised to stay informed through weather updates from NiMet.

The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Aliyu Abubakar, on Friday in Katsina.

He said that: “Today, Feb. 13, 2026, at about 02:00 p.m., some suspected bandits, armed with dangerous weapons shooting sporadically, attacked Magaje Village, Rimi LGA, and rustled a number of animals and escaped the scene before the arrival of police operatives.

“Upon receipt of the report, quickly, the DPO Rimi, in collaboration with neighbouring divisions, and the Military, mobilised operatives and responded to the scene.

“The team successfully tracked and intercepted the suspected bandits at Magaje village, where a gun duel ensued.”

He revealed that the team successfully recovered all the rustled animals and neutralised three suspected bandits.

The PPRO, however, revealed that “regrettably, the DPO was fatally shot by the bandits, and one policeman sustained a gunshot injury to his hand.

“The injured officer has been rushed to the nearest hospital for medical attention and is responding to treatment.”

The Commissioner of Police, Katsina State Command, Mr Bello Shehu, while commending the act of valour and camaraderie displayed by the joint security team, condemned the unfortunate incident.

He also mourned the officer, describing him as an upright, honest, and professional police officer.

Shehu condoled the immediate family and friends of the deceased officer.
