The Head of Operations, NEMA Kano Office, Dr Nura Abdullahi, disclosed this while receiving the returnees at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano.

The returnees arrived at the airport at about 10:50 a.m. conveyed in six luxury buses.

He said the returnees were brought back to Kano by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigerian Mission in Niger Republic, and the International Organisation for Migration, IOM, through a voluntary repatriation.

“The programme was meant to ensure the safe and dignified return of stranded Nigerians”, he said.

Abdullahi said the returnees comprised 165 males, 72 females, 46 boys and 46 girls from Kaduna, Jigawa, Kano, Borno and Katsina states, among others.

He said after physical verification and profiling, the returnees would be transported back to their respective states.

The returnees were provided with food, while those with health challenges received medical attention.

He advised the returnees and other Nigerians to look beyond seeking better livelihoods outside the country and avoid endangering their lives through irregular migration.

Abdullahi urged the returnees to serve as advocates against irregular migration by sensitising other youths on its dangers.

One of the returnees, Mrs Fatima Sani, a widow and mother of five from Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, said she travelled to Libya in search of a better livelihood.

“My husband died two years ago, leaving me with five children. We had no food to eat and could not pay our house rent. That was why I travelled to Libya to make money to pay my rent and start a business,” she said.

Sani said she was attacked by thieves who collected her money, adding that life in Libya was difficult.

“I worked as a house help in Libya, doing chores such as sweeping and washing dishes. Life was not easy in Libya,” she said.

Another returnee, Mrs Saihatu Idris, said she travelled to Libya with her two children to sell ready-made clothes.

“This was my first time travelling to Libya. Bandits attacked us and stole my clothes and money.

“I only spent 24 days there. I now realise Nigeria is safer,” she said.

She appealed to the government to support them with grants to care for their families and rebuild their lives.

The returnees were received by the officials of NEMA, SEMA, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and IDPs, and Red Cross Society, among others.

The agency received the returnees at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, on Friday at about 12:40 p.m.

Dr Nura Abdullahi, Head of Operations, NEMA Kano Office, said the exercise was a voluntary repatriation, and not a forced evacuation.

“It is a voluntary repatriation of Nigerians from Niger Republic. The returnees were brought back by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” he said.

Abdullahi said the operation was a tripartite arrangement involving the Nigerian Mission in Niger Republic, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Organisation for Migration, IOM, to ensure the safe and dignified return of stranded Nigerians.

He said the returnees comprised 174 males, 97 females, 137 boys and 89 girls from Kano, Jigawa, Borno, Kaduna among others.

According to Abdullahi, the agency, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders caters for the returnees upon arrival.

He said the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons provided drugs to the Nigerian Red Cross medical team for returnees with health challenges.

Abdullahi attributed the migration of many of the returnees to the search for better economic opportunities abroad, adding that most of them were likely heading to Libya but returned after realising the journey was unsafe.

The NEMA official said the agency provided meals, and after physical verification and profiling they would be transported back to their respective states.

While advising Nigerians to eschew travelling to seek greener pastures in other countries, Abdullahi said that, “no country is better than their country of origin.”

One of the returnees, Sani Hamisu from Kano State, said he travelled to Libya in search of better opportunities after facing financial hardship.

“I wanted to support my family as the first son and also get married, so I decided to travel to Libya,” he said.

“In the desert, there was no water and no food, many died. Once your water finishes, nobody can help you even with a cup of water,” he said.

He said that he had spent six years in Libya doing different menial jobs, and eventually returned home empty-handed.

“IOM rescued us in the desert and took us back to Niger Republic before we were brought to Nigeria,” he said.

Another returnee, Harira Muhammad, a mother of two from Borno, said she travelled to Libya eight months ago to support her sick husband.

“My husband was knocked down by a car during a Boko Haram attack, and has had a leg fracture since then.

“I travelled to Libya in search of greener pastures, but we were attacked by bandits who collected our money,” she said.

She urged the government to support them with business grants to enable them to rebuild their lives and care for their families.

NiMet’s weather outlook, released on Saturday in Abuja, predicted moderate dust haze with horizontal visibility between two kilometres and five kilometres over the northern region on Sunday.

‎NiMet anticipated localised visibility of less than or equal to 1,000 metres over parts of Katsina, Kano and Jigawa states throughout the forecast period.

‎The agency anticipated moderate dust haze over the North-Central region throughout the period.

‎NiMet predicted sunny skies with a few patches of cloud over the southern region, with slim prospects of afternoon or evening thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall over parts of Lagos, Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.

According to NiMet, moderate dust haze is expected over the northern and North-Central regions throughout the forecast period on Monday.

It forecast sunny skies with few patches of cloud over the southern region, with slim chances of isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall over Ondo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta and Edo states later in the day.

The agency predicted slight dust haze over the northern region during the forecast period on Tuesday.

‎NiMet anticipated moderate dust haze over the North-Central region throughout the period.

‎The agency predicted sunny skies with few patches of cloud over the southern region, with slim chances of isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall over Lagos, Edo, Delta and Bayelsa states later in the day.

NiMet advised the public to take necessary precautions as dust particles would remain in suspension.

NiMet advised the people with asthma and other respiratory conditions to be cautious under the prevailing weather conditions.

‎It further advised motorists to drive with caution during rainfall and the airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective operational planning.

‎The agency advised the residents to stay informed through regular weather updates by visiting its website at www.nimet.gov.ng.

With his movement to the APC, Shekarau is expected to join forces with former governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, to fight another former governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who recently left the NNPP to the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

Governor Yusuf secured the seat on the NNPP platform before he left the party to join the APC.

The state commander, Idris Muhammed-Lawan, disclosed this in a statement signed by FRSC’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Labaran, on Saturday in Kano.

The statement said: “we received a distress call at about 9:25 a.m. and arrived at the scene within 10 minutes.

“The accident involved a DAF trailer loaded with goods and passengers, travelling from Wudil Market en route to Lagos State.

“The passengers were 30 male adults; two persons died, 20 others sustained varying degrees of injuries, while eight were unhurt.”

According to the statement, preliminary investigations reveal that the driver lost control due to over speeding while approaching the T-Junction and hit another vehicle parked by the roadside.

The statement added that the victims were taken to Wudil General Hospital for treatment.

It quoted the state commander expressing concern over continued violation of road safety regulations, particularly the use of trailers for conveying passengers.

He said overspeeding and overloading remained major causes of road crashes and urged drivers to comply strictly with traffic rules.

Muhammed-Lawan advised the general public to avoid boarding trailers and other unsafe vehicles.

Yilwatda stated this in Abuja at the weekend that the federal government’s ongoing infrastructure and industrial investments across Kano and the wider Northern corridor are neither accidental nor isolated projects.

He said rather, they were part of a coordinated strategy to restore Kano to its historic status as the economic heartbeat of Northern Nigeria and one of Africa’s most strategic inland commercial centres.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is not merely developing Kano; he is redesigning the economic future of Northern Nigeria through Kano.

“His administration understands clearly that Kano is the natural commercial nerve centre of the North and the gateway between Nigeria and the wider West African hinterland.”

In a statement signed by Mr. Abimbola Tooki, his Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, the national chairman said President Tinubu’s strategic economic vision is to make Kano the largest business and industrial hub in Nigeria after Lagos, while establishing it as the principal gateway for trade into the Sahel and Francophone West Africa.

Yilwatda highlighted several landmark infrastructure projects currently being executed by the Tinubu administration which are expected to transform Kano into a mega commercial city:

According to him, the federal government is fast-tracking the completion of the Kaduna–Kano standard gauge railway, a critical project that will connect Kano directly to Abuja and Southern Nigeria through modern rail logistics, drastically reducing the cost and time of moving goods and passengers.

The line is expected to be operational this year.

The Kano–Maradi rail line will connect Kano to Niger Republic and the broader Sahel trade belt, opening vast export and import corridors into Francophone West Africa.

This project will significantly expand Kano’s role as Nigeria’s principal inland export gateway.

The federal government has targeted completion by 2026/2027.

The recently approved Kano Metropolitan Rail Service will modernise transportation within Kano metropolis, decongest urban movement, improve logistics efficiency and support Kano’s emergence as a modern mega-city.

The AKK Gas Pipeline will deliver industrial gas to Kano and the wider North, powering factories, industrial parks, fertiliser plants and gas-fired power generation, thereby reviving manufacturing and attracting new industries to Kano.

Strategic investments in power generation and transmission across the Northern industrial belt, including projects tied to the Kaduna–Kano axis, will improve electricity reliability and support industrialisation.

Ongoing rehabilitation and expansion of the key Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano road corridor will improve connectivity between Kano and the rest of the federation, boosting trade efficiency, while Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway will create a new economic corridor linking Northern agricultural belts to Southern export markets and ports, unlocking business opportunities across the entire North-West.

Yilwatda explained that President Tinubu’s heavy investment in Kano is driven by strategic national economic considerations:

1. Kano Is Northern Nigeria’s Largest Commercial Ecosystem: Kano hosts one of the biggest market and manufacturing clusters in Africa and remains the natural business capital of Northern Nigeria.
2. Kano Is Nigeria’s Gateway to the Sahel: Its geographical location makes it the ideal export and logistics hub for trade with Niger, Chad and wider Francophone West Africa.
3. Reviving Kano Means Reviving Northern Industry: Kano’s historical strength in textiles, leather, agro-processing and commerce makes it critical to the North’s industrial rebirth.
4. Kano Can Become Nigeria’s Second Mega Commercial City: President Tinubu’s administration seeks to reduce overdependence on Lagos by building Kano into a second dominant commercial powerhouse.
5. Northern Prosperity Is Critical to National Stability: Expanding commerce, industry and employment in Kano and the wider North is essential to reducing poverty, unemployment and insecurity.

Yilwatda said no previous administration had assembled such a comprehensive and interconnected infrastructure strategy for Northern Nigeria.

“Who before now conceived this scale of integrated development for the North: rail lines, gas pipelines, metropolitan transit, industrial power, superhighways and regional trade corridors, all designed to work together? This is vision. This is strategic leadership. This is what President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is delivering.”

The APC national chairman criticised opposition parties for what he described as their obsession with insults, propaganda and power politics rather than national development.

“While President Tinubu is building the infrastructure backbone that will transform the North for generations, the opposition is busy chasing personal ambition and power for its own sake.

“They offer no ideas, no blueprint, no alternative vision. Their only manifesto is to insult the APC and attack every development initiative because they lack the capacity to think beyond politics.”

Yilwatda noted that President Tinubu’s infrastructure and industrial strategy will fundamentally alter the economic destiny of Northern Nigeria and reposition Kano as the undisputed economic capital of the North.

“History will remember President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the leader who restored Kano to greatness, industrialised the North, and built the infrastructure backbone for Nigeria’s next era of prosperity.”

The director of the service, Alhaji Sani Anas, confirmed the incident in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, on Monday.

According to Anas, the incident occurred at Madinawa area, behind Seven-Up, in Kumbotso local government area.

“We received a distress call from Murtala Muhammed, Deputy Criminal Operations (DCO) of Mariri Police Division that an unidentified man had fallen into an open water,” he said.

Anas said that upon receiving the report, a rescue team from the agency’s headquarters was immediately deployed to the scene.

He added that the victim was brought out dead from the water and his body was handed over to the DCO for further investigation.

The director urged members of the public to refrain from bathing in open water to avoid such incident.

VAT does not know who drinks what. Every time news breaks of Hisbah, Kano State’s moral police, smashing bottles of beer, millions of people, mostly in the South, erupt in rage. Band A rage, that is. Most of the anger, I believe, is expressed by people who identify as Christians and who see the Muslim North as bad news.

The comment sections, especially on Facebook, burn hottest. The question that comes up again and again is why should states that ban the consumption of alcohol receive VAT from alcohol? I used to think this was a clever gotcha, but I no longer do. The argument rests on a moral instinct that feels good but dissipates in the face of law, economics, or basic fairness.

The claim is simple. If some states ban alcohol and even use religious agencies to seize or destroy it, they should not benefit from VAT generated from alcohol produced elsewhere. It sounds like justice. It is not. It is fiscal confusion. I do not expect this view to be popular with the permanently enraged.

VAT is not a prize awarded to states that host certain industries, but a national consumption tax collected by the Federal Government and shared using agreed constitutional formula. Once collected, the money loses memory of its origin. It stops being alcohol VAT, gambling VAT, pork VAT, nightclub VAT or interest-based banking VAT. It is just VAT.

This debate is often framed as entitlement. If you ban alcohol, you should not “chop” alcohol money. I do not think states with Hisbah and other agencies that convulse at the thought of liquor are taking alcohol money.  What they receive are statutory allocations from a common pool to which all parts of the federation contribute in different ways. No state earns VAT by permission. None. Every state receives VAT by membership; because Nigeria exists as one fiscal unit.

There is also the small matter of selective memory. If moral purity is the standard, alcohol cannot be the only issue. VAT also comes from gambling, interest-based banking, insurance tied to interest and uncertainty, pork-based food items, nightclubs, adult entertainment, lottery and media content that would give religious leaders across faiths fits. Southern states do not reject VAT because some of it comes from predatory loans, betting apps, pornography-adjacent entertainment or music and films churches regularly denounce. Moral filtering becomes impossible once the lens widens.

If we believe Nigeria should abandon pooled revenue and adopt strict derivation, the honest path is to argue for full constitutional restructuring and fiscal federalism across all sectors.

The argument also ignores economic reality. Citizens of states with alcohol aversion and moral police pay VAT outside their states every day. They travel, trade, bank, rent homes, insure assets, borrow money and work across Nigeria. VAT is paid at the point of consumption, not at that of belief. A trader buying goods in Onitsha or a traveller spending in Lagos pays VAT regardless of what their home state bans. To deny their states a share is to believe that the economy stops at state boundaries.

The noise around Hisbah and smashed beer bottles, while emotionally powerful, is a distraction. Destroying alcohol within a state is an internal regulatory choice that has nothing to do with national revenue sharing. A state can ban an activity locally without losing access to federal resources generated nationally. There is also an uncomfortable undertone that deserves honesty. The Southern position suggests that religious difference should determine fiscal worth and that some Nigerians deserve less because their moral codes are stricter or simply different. Once accepted, that idea does not stop at alcohol. It starts asking who truly belongs and on what moral terms. That is no fiscal argument.

If we believe Nigeria should abandon pooled revenue and adopt strict derivation, the honest path is to argue for full constitutional restructuring and fiscal federalism across all sectors. It is weak to single out alcohol and gambling as a special moral exception while enjoying the same system everywhere else. VAT is not a moral endorsement of how other Nigerians live. It is the price of sharing a country. Sharing a country means no group gets to redesign the national revenue framework in the image of its own theology after the money has already been collected.

The agency released its weather outlook on Sunday in Abuja.

NiMet said moderate dust haze was expected over parts of Kebbi and Kano states in the northern region on Monday, with horizontal visibility ranging between two to five kilometres.

It said other northern states would experience sunny and hazy skies.

“For the central region, moderate dust haze is forecast over parts of the Federal Capital Territory and Niger State. The remaining states in the zone are expected to remain sunny and hazy throughout the period.”

In the southern region, NiMet predicted sunny skies with occasional cloud patches, with afternoon and evening thunderstorms accompanied by light rains over Bayelsa, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states.

“On Tuesday, slight dust haze is expected over parts of Kano and Kebbi states, while other northern states will continue under sunny and hazy skies.

“The central region will experience sunny and hazy conditions, with isolated thundery activity in parts of Plateau State during afternoon and evening hours.

“Southern states will see sunny skies with cloud patches, along with afternoon and evening thunderstorms in Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States.”

The agency said that on Wednesday, northern and central regions would remain sunny and hazy.

“Southern areas will experience sunny skies with occasional cloud patches and prospects of afternoon or evening thunderstorms, with light rains across Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Lagos, Delta, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states.”

NiMet warned that dust particles remained suspended in the air, urging the public, especially those with asthma or respiratory conditions, to take precautions.

His resignation was announced on Friday by the  Kwankwasiyya Movement in a statement by its spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Mohammed.

The movement described the decision as a difficult but necessary one taken in the interest of governance and stability.

The statement reads in part: “The Kwankwasiyya Movement wishes to formally inform the general public that the deputy governor of Kano State has tendered his resignation from office, effective later today.”

The statement reads further: “This decision, though difficult, has been taken in the overall interest of the people and the stability of governance in Kano state.

“Recent circumstances have constrained the full realisation of the benefits and responsibilities attached to the office.”

The movement said that the resignation had nothing to do with an admission of guilt over allegations raised by the Kano State House of Assembly in its impeachment procedure.

“The deputy governor maintains his innocence,” it said.

“Rather, this step is a demonstration of statesmanship and a commitment to peace, political maturity, and the avoidance of unnecessary tension,” it added.

The movement said Gwarzo would work to strengthen the Kwankwasiyya Movement ahead of the 2027 general elections.
