Kayode, who appeared before the court for the continuation of his trial, on a four-count charge, was earlier granted bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties in like sum.

The defendant is facing a four-count charge bordering on dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care and attention resulting in bodily harm and damage to property, and driving without a valid national driver’s licence.

Kayode was arraigned on January 2, before Magistrate Olajumoke, following the accident, which occurred on December 29, 2025 in front of Sinamo Company along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The defendant being the driver in charge of a Lexus 570 jeep with registration number KRD 850 HM, conveying Joshua and his friends Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, drove dangerously which resulted in a fatal accident and caused the untimely death of Ayodele and Ghami.

The heavyweight boxing champion Joshua also sustained minor injuries in the accident.

The Prosecution Counsel, Mr Richard Nijiwe, said the offence committed contravened section 5(1), 6(1), 7(1) and 10(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Richard also made an application to the court for an adjournment of the case to enable the transmission of the case file to the Ogun State Attorney-General’s Office through the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

However, the defense counsel, Mr Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the application, arguing that the defence was ready to proceed with the trial.

In her ruling, Magistrate Somefun granted the prosecution’s application and adjourned the matter to February 25, for further hearing.

In a joint statement, the two state governments once again commiserated with the families of the deceased, describing the incident as painful and deeply unfortunate.

They prayed that Almighty God would grant the souls of the departed eternal rest and give their families and loved ones the strength to bear the irreparable loss.

The statement disclosed that Anthony Joshua and his mother were at a funeral home in Lagos on Wednesday to pay their final respect to the two late friends, whose bodies were being prepared for repatriation later in the evening.

According to the governments, Anthony Joshua was discharged from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, late on Wednesday after doctors confirmed that he was clinically fit to continue his recuperation from home.

Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State expressed deep appreciation to members of the public for the overwhelming concern, prayers and show of love following the sad incident.

They also conveyed their gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what they described as his fatherly support throughout the period.

The governments further commended the doctors and medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, for the quality of care, professionalism and dedication shown in attending to Anthony Joshua and other injured victims of the accident.

The statement was jointly signed by the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, and the Ogun State Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Kayode Akinmade.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, made this known on Monday.

He quoted the president as saying: “I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him. He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital.

“I also spoke with AJ’s mother and prayed for her. She was very appreciative of my call.

“Additionally, I spoke to Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was in the hospital with them. The Governor assured me that he will do everything possible to ensure AJ receives the best possible attention.”

Earlier, in a statement on X, President Tinubu—who is currently abroad—expressed profound sympathy for the boxer over the accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.

“I sympathise with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident. As a sportsman, you have always shown courage, discipline, and unwavering love for our country. These are qualities that have made you a source of national pride.

“In moments like this, we must encourage one another as brothers and sisters with a shared destiny.

“I pray for strength, wisdom, and grace for you during this painful period. May God grant you a speedy recovery and repose to the souls of the departed,” the president added.

Lagos and Ogun State government made this known in a statement jointly issued.

It would be recalled that two persons died when the vehicle conveying Joshua collided with a stationary truck.

An injured Joshua and one other person were evacuated to a hospital in Lagos.

According to the Special Adviser to the governor of Ogun State on Information, Mr. Kayode Akinmade and Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, in a statement, doctors had conducted several clinical assessments and had confirmed that both patients were stable and did not require any emergency interventions.

“A comprehensive medical team has since been convened and will continue to monitor them closely,” the statement reads in part.

Joshua was said to be relating well with his family.

“The Governments of Ogun and Lagos are keenly monitoring the situation and will ensure that the two persons receive the best medical care.

“We have also commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash,” the statement reads further.

It was gathered that two people died in the accident while Joshua sustained injuries.

It was also gathered that the vehicle conveying Joshua, an Lexus SUV with registration number KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck.

Mr Afolabi Odunsi, Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, in Ogun, confirmed the incident in a statement in Abeokuta on Monday.

Odunsi explained that the incident occurred at 12 p.m. involving two vehicles, adding that the Sagamu unit of the FRSC rescue team was at the scene as soon as they were informed.

The FRSC spokesperson attributed the accident to excessive speeding and wrongful overtaking, explaining that the driver overtook from the right-hand side and rammed into a stationary vehicle.

“Five people were involved; one injured, two were unhurt while two were killed in the crash.

“However it was discovered that Anthony Joshua (international boxer) was involved but he only sustained injury, and was taken to an undisclosed hospital by the security officers attached to him.

“The bodies of the two killed have since been taken to the morgue and obstructions have been cleared,” he said.

The Ogun Police Command also confirmed the incident through its Public Relations Officer, DSP, Oluseyi Babaseyi.

Babaseyi explained that the deceased had been deposited at Livewell Hospital Morgue, Sagamu.

Miami came alive in the early hours as Anthony Joshua’s right hand finally found Jake Paul’s jaw, delivering a blunt reminder of the difference between boxing spectacle and boxing reality.

After four largely uneventful rounds in which Paul relied on movement and caution, Joshua connected decisively in the sixth round, underlining why he remains a serious, professional heavyweight, regardless of where he stands in his career.

Credit must still go to the YouTuber-turned-boxer for daring to imagine an upset. But ambition met reality when Paul hit the canvas, losing what became his second real test at this level.

Joshua’s knockdown by Daniel Dubois last year had painted the Briton as vulnerable, fueling Paul’s confidence that he might be easy prey.

That perception proved costly. Yes, Joshua may no longer be at his absolute peak, but Saturday’s bout showed the danger Paul faces when stepping into the ring with any real boxer, even one past his prime.

“I thought Joshua had removed my chin,” Paul said afterward. That, quite simply, is the price of sharing a ring with a genuine heavyweight.

Joshua has since called out fellow Briton Tyson Fury for a true heavyweight showdown, though it is clear that the Paul fight was driven largely by financial incentive.

According to estimates from Celebrity Net Worth, the Daily Mail, and former UFC champion Michael Bisping, the bout generated a reported $184 million purse, with Joshua and Paul earning approximately $92 million each. Paul later hinted on X (formerly Twitter) that the figure may even be higher.

Either way, Joshua leaves significantly wealthier. And at 36, one could argue he has little left to prove competitively.

Exhibition bouts and endorsements may now offer safer and smarter returns.

Joshua cut an increasingly frustrated figure as Paul refused to engage by dancing around the ring for long spells, before the two-time world champion finally imposed himself by knocking down the YouTuber-turned-boxer twice in the fifth round.

Paul was down again in the sixth before Joshua landed a powerful and clean right hand that brought a surreal night to an abrupt conclusion at Miami’s Kaseya Center.

The American did not beat the count and there was palpable relief inside the arena when he was able to rise to his feet and leave the ring without assistance.

“It wasn’t the best performance,” Joshua, 36, said.

“The end goal was to pin Jake Paul down and hurt him. It took a bit longer than expected, but the right hand finally found the destination.”

It was the result the boxing world had overwhelmingly predicted, and the controversial bout raises questions about the safety risks created by such a vast gulf in experience, size and power.

Joshua claimed the 29th victory of his professional career in 33 outings and can now turn his attention to a more legitimate challenge – notably the long-mooted showdown with Tyson Fury next year.

“Come and fight one of the ‘realest’ fighters out there, step in there with me next if you’re a really bad boy,” Joshua told his rival.

Paul, meanwhile, failed to deliver on his promise to pull off the greatest upset in sports history.

The 28-year-old spent much of the fight tumbling to the canvas and clutching at Joshua’s legs, a reflection of the two-stone weight gap and how badly he struggled to cope with it.

Paul did manage to land a handful of shots, however, and the fact the contest stretched into the sixth round was an unflattering reflection on Joshua.

Joshua walked to the ring first and received a mixed reception inside the 20,000-seat arena.

His expression was stern, reflecting his insistence all week that he would treat the contest seriously.

Paul’s ringwalk raised eyebrows as he was flanked by rapper 6ix9ine, a controversial figure with a history of criminal convictions and prison time.

When the opening bell rang, Paul circled on the back foot and boos soon followed.

Joshua stalked him, swinging heavy lefts and rights that cut only air, with each miss drawing gasps from the crowd.

Paul responded by sticking out his tongue, playing to the theatre.

Every passing minute felt like a small victory for Paul, who just 13 months earlier fought 58-year-old Mike Tyson.

He did land a looping overhand right in the fourth, but it barely registered with Joshua.

The event was broadcast live to more than 300 million Netflix subscribers.

Golf superstar Rory McIlroy, fresh from his Sports Personality of the Year win, sat ringside alongside rappers Rick Ross and Timbaland.

The fifth round delivered what many had expected far earlier.

A right hook brushed Paul’s shoulder and sent him to the canvas.

Moments later, a combination dropped him again.

He rose heavily and was breathing hard as he attempted to mask the damage with bravado.

Another heavy right in the sixth sent Paul sprawling once more, prompting calls from sections of the crowd for the referee to step in.

Those who remembered Joshua’s brutal one-punch knockout of former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou earlier last year sensed a familiar ending approaching.

It was not quite as savage, but the straight right – the punch Joshua had been waiting for all night – finally landed flush.

This was not a contest designed to rigorously test Joshua’s boxing ability.

It was entertainment, engineered to generate attention and revenue.

“I don’t care about the legacy. All the legacy is there to just last for 50 years, then it’s done. This is what I do, I’ll do it until can’t any more,” Joshua said.

Joshua will leave Miami with his share of a reported purse of £210m and his focus is now expected to shift to another warm-up opponent in February before a potential showdown with Fury later in 2026.

Paul, meanwhile, admitted he “got beat up” but insisted he will come back and target a cruiserweight world title.

“I think my jaw is broken. But that was good, I’ll come back and get a world championship belt at some point,” he said.

Like him or loathe him, Paul draws audiences, headlines and debate in a way few boxers can.

The fact he convinced sections of the public that this fight might be competitive speaks volumes about his power as a promoter – even if as a boxer, he was found out.

Daniel Dubois’s determination was not enough to defeat Oleksandr Usyk at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night. No elite heavyweight of this era has been able to handle the “slippy” Ukranian who has now scored seven zero against all the British elite he fought in the heavyweight division.

Having beaten Chisora once, Anthony Joshua twice, Tyson Fury Twice and Dubois twice, Usyk’s undisputed title won again on Saturday when he unified the IBF belt with his WBA, WBO and WBC in a record that will take years to beat.

Dubois came to this fight with determination and confidence after knocking out Joshua a few months ago but met a more tactical and more mentally stronger opponent that would only take five rounds to deflate him.

Usyk allowed Dubois to gas out quickly as he rotated round the ring, intermittently setting a trap for the British as the fight continued. I knew from the start that a jab could fall Dubois with the way he was jumping up and down to hit the Ukranian.

Fighting a boxer of Usyk’s calibre who is more or less a standard for modern boxing, it will not only require determination but a lot of calculations, techniques, resilience and patience. Dubois was too much in a hurry and it showed in his aggression in round five that led to his fall.

After the second round, I could notice Usyk’s corner how he felt perhaps because of the presure from Dubois. The Ukrainian nodded he was in control that it would only take a few minutes before he would damage Dubois. Usyk showed he knew what he was doing, “to tire out:” the Briton who was seriously looking for a knockout.

The Ukrianian as usual was “slippy” and mobile. He fought from the outside and created spaces and holes to hit Dubois where the balance was. He knew that Dubois would come after him after hitting the Briton twice in round two and three.

And when he realised that Dubois was becoming greedy, Usyk threw a bait, ran towards his corner for a cover, drawing the Briton to a trap that would finish the fight. It was a tactical movement. Dubois rushed the bait, threw some punches, which Usyk simply dodged and in a counter punch, a hook landed on Dubois’ chin.

The Briton staggered, gasping for breath as he found the canvas. Of course he beat the count, Usyk knew it was time to finish the work, he moved in and clinically finished the Briton. It looked simple, it was very very scientific.

It was not the blow that threw Dubois down but accumulated frustration from a running man. He has run himself out of gas. He never beat the count, all looked like a dream. Usyk just took away the only heavyweight belt from Dubois and became two-time Undisputed Heavyweight. This is a record.

Another beneficiary, Mrs Taiwo Onogu, said she was billed N1.4 million for the eye surgery which was eventually conducted free at the outreach.

The five-day outreach which held in Mushin Local Council Development Area, was the fourth in Lagos since the introduction of the Vision First initiative in 2022.

Among other things, the medical team performed 245 eye surgeries, of which 198 were for cataract and 47 for Pterygium.

Another 1,992 received laboratory services while the pharmacy dispensed drugs to 1,863 patients.

The latest milestones mean the programme has reached more than 6,000 people with over 400 eye surgeries and distribution of more than 2,000 eyeglasses since 2022.

SNEPCo Managing Director, Ronald Adams commented on the impact of the programme: “Vision is an important part of life, and we’re pleased at the testimonies from Mushin, which were the same positive feedback from the three earlier sessions. With the support of NNPC and co-venture partners, we will continue to implement impactful social investments which have been an integral part of our operations since we pioneered deep-water oil production at Bonga in 2005.”

The Vision First initiative aims to combat avoidable visual impairment through early diagnosis and treatment, against the background of a report in the National Eye Health Policy 2019 that, blindness in three out of four people in Nigeria, is preventable.

“Every step we take together towards the festival is not merely an act of preparation for a sporting event, but a reaffirmation of our collective commitment to national building through sports,” the president stated.

The president recognised the contributions of Nigeria’s sporting legends and paid tribute to Olympic medalist and the National Torch Bearer, Falilat Ogunkoya.

He commended her dedication to promoting unity and sports excellence in Nigeria and Africa.

He said the young athletes would compete under the Invited Junior Athletes (IJA) category, marking a historic inclusion in the festival.

Later, at the forecourt of the Presidential Villa, the deputy governor of Delta State, Monday Onyeme, representing Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, handed over the Festival Torch of Unity to the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, NSC, Shehu Dikko.

President Tinubu received the torch from Dikko, who in turn passed it to the chairman of the Main Organizing Committee, Hon. Bukola Olopade, who then entrusted it to Falilat Ogunkoya, the National Torch Bearer, for its journey across the country.
