The Nigeria Police Force has described as false and misleading the allegation by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, that he had become unsafe following hostilities by the security agency.

In a swift reaction to the claim of the Senate President on Friday, the Nigeria Police Force in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Jimoh Moshood, the personnel attached to him were still intact.

Said Moshood: “All the Police personnel attached to the person of the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, his office and family are intact and all the statutory security protection on the person of the Senate President are also accorded him all the time and there was no complaint from the Senate President before now to the Police on this.”

He explained that contrary to the position of Saraki, police did not give any protection to any political thug or shield any APC thug to go to family quarters of the Senate President in Agbaji, Ilorin and vandalise houses, shops and inflict wounds with machete on three people as claimed by the Senate President.

Stressing that his claim was false, the police added that they did not receive any complaint or report of gunshot and wounding as claimed by the Senate President in other areas he mentioned such as Adewole/Adeta, Ile-otan and ubandawaki/pakata.

The statement by Moshood reads further: “For avoidance of doubt, there was no complaint reported at any Police division within Ilorin metropolis or any other Police Division on the 10th January, 2019 till today 11th January 2019 of any attack, wounding, shooting and destruction of any property by any individual(s) or any political party on their members.

“However, security within Ilorin metropolis and other locations in Kwara State has been beefed-up to ensure security of all Nigerians living in the state.

“It is pertinent to state that all Police personnel attached to the person of the Senate President, his office and family are intact and all the statutory security protection on the person of the Senate President are also accorded him all the time and there was no complaint from the Senate President before now to the Police on this.

“It is incumbent on the Force to set the record straight and correct the wrong impressions that must have been created in the minds of the general Public and the International Community from the misinformation and misleading account from the Senate President.

“The Inspector General of Police did not try any trick to implicate the Senate President in some criminal charges; the facts are in the public domain about the suspects of the Offa Bank Robbery now being prosecuted who implicated the Senate President in the matter.

“The Nigeria Police Force is hereby assuring all Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force has no any undisguised hostility to the Senate President or his supporters in Kwara State or to jeopardise or undermine his personal security and that of his immediate and larger family.

“The Force will continue to be apolitical and will ensure adequate security throughout the country for all political parties, their members and supporters before, during and after the 2019 General Election.”

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has accused the Nigeria Police Force of evading the issues of human rights abuse, extra-judicial killing and politicisation of criminal investigations as they concern the death of the principal suspect in the April 5, 2018 Offa bank robbery incident in Kwara State.

In his reaction to the announcement of the death of Adikwu in police custody, Saraki had called on the Presidency to make a thorough inquiry into the case.

But in its reply, the spokesman of the police, Mr. Jimoh Moshood, explained that Adikwu simply slumped and died.

He stated however, that the death of the principal suspect would not stop the police from prosecuting Saraki.

But accusing the police of dodging the issue, Saraki, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, said when he mentioned in his statement on Wednesday that he had been vindicated, he was not referring to the outcome of a case which is just about to commence but rather he was pointing to the belated admission by the Police that Adikwu had died in custody, “a fact that was initially denied by the Police when he (Senate President) raised it a few months ago.”

He added that the Police in an alleged cover up of its mishandling of the investigations and their politicisation of the process, had continued to make inconsistent statements and commit more blunders.

“The Police while reacting to our disclosure that the prime suspect had died in custody, caused their spokesman, Moshood Jimoh, to respond that: ‘Michael Adikwu is in police custody in one of the South-west states…helping in the investigation’. The same Police have equally documented the claim that the suspect died during arrest. What a contradiction!

“It is surprising that the Police which initially allowed the said Adikwu to grant interviews to several national newspapers while in custody refused to inform the public that the suspect had died until the Attorney General of Kwara State mentioned it on November 21, 2018 in the course of his address to the High Court in Ilorin while applying to amend the charge sheet,” he stated.

He noted that President Muhammadu Buhari needed to institute inquiry into the death of Adikwu because it had several implications for the country’s legal system and its engagement with the international community which had consistently cited the issues of human rights abuse and extra-judicial killing by security forces as major reasons for their reluctance to sell arms to Nigeria in the fight against Boko Haram.

“One of the key issues those of us who have been engaging with the international community on the need for them to support Nigeria in the fight against terrorism in the North-east region through supply of arms, provision of training and other technical aid has been confronting is that of the flagrant abuse of human rights and extra-judicial killing by our security agencies.

“This is an instance of what these international partners complain about. The Presidency should make a point that the present government does not tolerate human rights abuse, extra-judicial killing, politically-motivated criminal investigation and refusal to comply with global best practices by security agencies by instituting an inquiry into the case of the death of this suspect,” he stated.

The Senate President further called for diligent prosecution of the Offa robbery case so that justice can be done to the innocent victims of the April 5 attacks, the suspects facing trial and the state whose peace was disturbed by the sad incident.

The invasion of the residence of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, by some armed men on Tuesday has no link with assassination attempt.

This is the position of the Nigeria Police Force.

According to the spokesman of the police, Jimoh Moshood, who spoke with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, the case was that of burglary.

He said that was the much that had so far been gathered from the investigation conducted by the police in the case.

According to Moshood who identified the suspect arrested as Mohammed Yusuf, said a similar invasion was carried out on the residence of Ekweremadu’s neighbour, Haliru Adamu.

Adamu was said to have lost his cell phones and jewellery to the thieves when they entered his residence.

Ekweremadu was, however, lucky as he did not lose any material to the alleged thieves.

“Investigation so far carried out in the incident does not have any link to assassination attempt…

“The suspect has been assisting the police in the investigation into the matter. We have intensified efforts to arrest other suspects who escaped from the crime scene,” Moshood said.

Some armed men were said to have successfully avoided the security men and entered Ekweremadu’s premises on Tuesday, allegedly on an assassination mission.

They were reported to have quietly held his son and forced him to lead them into the senator’s room.

“It was in the ensuing struggle in the Senator’s bedroom that security was alerted, leading to the arrest of one of the assailants with dangerous weapon and housebreaking devices, while the rest managed to escape,” Ekweremadu’s Special Adviser on Media, Uche Anichukwu Anichukwu, was said to have stated in a statement he issued.

The Senate also commenced a probe into the case on Tuesday.

Its Committee on Police Affairs was directed to take up the case.

The decision followed the narration of the incident at plenary by Ekweremadu.

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has ordered all Commissioners of Police to deal with any member of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, otherwise referred to as Shiite that may be out to cause breakdown of law and order.

This is as it was announced that members of the sect arrested would be arraigned for terrorism.

The directive of the IGP was relayed on Tuesday by the Force spokesman, DCP Jimoh Moshood, in Abuja.

Said he: “They are to deal decisively in accordance with the law with the sect and prevent the group from causing breakdown of law and order in those states,” he said.

The IGP, Moshood said, had ordered that the case of those arrested as a result of the clashes in Abuja should be well investigated.

Idris was quoted as warning that the police would not tolerate any lawlessness and disturbance of public peace by any group.

He said: “The full weight of the law will be applied on perpetrators of violence and lawlessness that can lead to breach of the peace, and law and order anywhere in the country.”
