NiMet’s weather outlook, released on Tuesday in Abuja, envisaged moderate dust haze with horizontal visibility between two and five kilometres over the northern region on Wednesday.

The agency envisaged localised visibility of less than or equal to 1,000 metres over parts of Katsina, Kano and Jigawa states throughout the forecast period.

It predicted sunny skies with a few patches of cloud over the southern region, with slim prospects of afternoon or evening thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall over parts of Lagos, Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.

The agency anticipated sunny skies with few patches of cloud over the southern region, with slim chances of isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall over Lagos, Edo, Delta and Bayelsa states later in the day.

The agency warned that dust particles would remain in suspension while advising the public to take necessary precautions.

NiMet advised the people with asthma and other respiratory conditions to be cautious under the prevailing weather conditions.

It further advised motorists to drive with caution during rainfall and urged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for effective operational planning.

A credible military source made this known on Monday in Abuja.

The source said the incident occurred at about 12:15 a.m. on January 4, when a local boat ferrying 40 traders from Adiani Village in Jigawa to a market in Nguru capsized in the Garbi riverine area.

According to him, troops of 241 Battalion, in collaboration with other security agencies and local divers, immediately mobilised to the scene and provided emergency support.

“The combined search and rescue effort led to the successful rescue of 13 victims alive, while 27 dead bodies were recovered from the river,” he said.

The source added that arrangements were underway for the burial of the deceased in accordance with Islamic rites, while relevant authorities were taking further necessary actions.

He noted that troops’ morale and fighting efficiency remained satisfactory, reaffirming their commitment to supporting civil authorities and responding promptly to emergencies within their area of responsibility.

Riverine accidents remain a recurring challenge in parts of the country, often linked to night travel, overloading, and poor safety measures.

Mr Ado Adamu, the Ag. commander in charge of the Ringim Local Government Unit of the FRSC in Jigawa confirmed the development on Thursday.

Adamu said the incident which involved a Volkswagen car conveying 23 passengers, was caused by tyre burst and excessive speeding.

He explained that 23 passengers, consisting of seven males and 16 females, were involved in the incident that occurred on Thursday at 4:45 p. m.

The unit commander added that 11 of the passengers, including five males and six females lost their lives, while 12 of them – seven males and five females sustained varying degrees of injuries.

According to him, the bodies of the deceased and the injured persons were taken to Ringim General Hospital.

Adamu said the FRSC Sector Commander in the state, Mr Umar Matazu, had condoled the families of the deceased and prayed for speedy recovery of the injured victims.

Adamu said the victims were on their way from Bauchi State to Kankia local government area of Katsina State.

The command’s spokesperson, ASC Badaruddeen Tijjani, confirmed the incident in a statement in Dutse, on Wednesday.

Tijjana said that Abubakar, a resident of Gabari Village in Chamo district, drowned on Tuesday while swimming in a pond in the area.

He said that the deceased was discovered lifeless inside a pond locally referred to as “Mahayin gidan Toro”, located about 1.5 kilometers to the north of Gabari Village.

“Prior to the discovery, the shoes and trousers of the deceased were seen abandoned by the river bank.

“And according to his father, the deceased went to swim in the pond at about 5 p.m., but failed to return home.

“A search was immediately initiated by the community until the body was eventually discovered this morning,” he said.

The Jigawa NSCDC image maker added that the body of the deceased, which showed no trace of injury, was handed over to his parents for burial.

He urged parents, guardians and community leaders to warn children and youths against unsafe swimming practices in open water bodies in order to avert future occurrences.

He assured that the corps remained committed to its mandate of safeguarding lives and property across the state.

The council’s Information Officer, Musa Muhammad, confirmed the incident in a statement in Dutse on Sunday.

Muhammad said the incident occurred as a result of a heavy downpour recorded in Kirikasamma and its environs.

“I gathered that seven persons got serious injuries while one person died at Kabak Village in kirikasamma local government area.

“The incident happened midnight Friday,  after which five of the victims were hospitalised while the remaining two were treated and discharged,” Muhammad said.

The information officer added that the chairman also provided N500,000 to cover the medical expenses to the victims and N100,000 emergency assistance to the bereaved families.

Confirming the incident to newsmen in Dutse on Monday, the command’s spokesperson, Mr Badaruddin Tijjani, said the incident occurred at about 1:30 p.m., when the deceased officer went for official operation at the market.

He explained that the deceased, Bashir Adamu-Jibril, Superintendent of the Corps, SC, was of the Department of Intelligence and Investigation in the command before his death.

The spokesman added that the hoodlums, suspected to be butchers, allegedly matcheted the deceased, ripping open the back of his head.

“The officer was attacked at the market’s kara (slaughter slab) where he went on official operation to arrest some suspected bad elements,” the spokesman alleged.

According to him, the officer was confirmed dead by doctor on duty at Dutse General Hospital where he was rushed for medical attention.

Tijjani said the Corps had so far arrested three persons in connection with the case.

“The late officer has been prepared for funeral rites and we are currently on our way to Kano where he will buried,” he said.
