The Director of the Chemical and Hazardous Materials Management Department of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, Mr. Louis Adeyemi, has asserted that pest control officers have critical roles to play in addressing climate change.

Adeyemi, who spoke on Wednesday as a guest lecturer at the Annual Mandatory Training of the Pest Control Association of Nigeria, PECAN, held at MAN Centre, Wemabod Estate, Ikeja, Lagos, emphasised the need for practitioners to embrace global best practices.

The theme of the event is, “Building the Future of Pest Control in Nigeria: Adapting to Climate Change, Embracing Technology, and Promoting Professional Standards,” and the sub-theme is, “Enhancing Sustainability Through Insurance, Contracts, and Effective Risk Management.”

Representing the Managing Director of LASEPA, Dr. Tunde Ajayi, Adeyemi noted that the world now operates in a dynamic environment, which requires changes in traditional approaches.

“We live in a dynamic environment, and so we must change some of the things we do and the manner in which we do them.

“It is imperative for us to adopt climate-friendly modes of operation rather than doing things haphazardly. Everything is changing, and we must embrace global best practices,” he said.

Adeyemi disclosed that LASEPA had deployed almost 70 air-quality monitoring stations across Lagos, providing real-time environmental data.

He explained that such information could help residents make informed decisions.

He illustrated this with an example: “If someone plans to visit Ajah but air-quality data shows that the environment is unsafe, the person could opt to handle the engagement via phone or video call rather than expose himself to health risks.

“Many of the vehicles people use are diesel-powered, not well serviced, and release fumes that pollute the environment. This leads to sickness and ultimately reduces productivity.”

He added that LASEPA continued to expand its monitoring capacity yearly and operates a laboratory where environmental samples can be tested.

Earlier in his lecture, Adeyemi urged pest controllers to prioritise continuous training to keep pace with the rapid developments in Nigeria’s pest control sector.

He noted the need for climate-smart pest management systems and technology-driven operations.

According to him, integrating modern tools; including artificial intelligence; into pest management would enhance efficiency.

He listed the benefits of adopting technology to include faster and more accurate detection, reduced chemical use through targeted treatment, improved customer communication, and enhanced compliance reporting.

Also speaking, the Welfare Secretary of PCAN and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the 2025 Mandatory Training, PCO Olayinka Jacob, said the annual training helped members upgrade their skills.

“This year, we are focusing on pest control and insurance. We are growing, and as we grow, we are introducing more Western ideas. Climate change is real. We are in November and rain is still falling, and you see a lot of mosquitoes,” she said.

Jacob emphasised the importance of continuous professional development, noting that clients increasingly demand certification and evidence of updated training.

On the issue of quackery, she stressed that anyone not registered with the Pest Control Association of Nigeria was considered a quack.

“Wherever you work, people want to know if you are a certified pest control officer. We are trying to be at par with Western nations, and we will get there. They undergo continuous training, and that is what we are also doing,” she said.

A High Court sitting in Ilorin on Thursday sentenced five men charged with the 2018 Offa bank robbery incident to death by hanging.

The court convicted Ayoade Akinnibosun; Azeez Salahudeen; Niyi Ogundiran; Ibikunle Ogunleye and Adeola Abraham.

Delivering judgment, Justice Haleema Saliman held that the five defendants were found guilty of conspiracy, armed robbery, culpable homicide and illegal possession of fire arms.

Saliman said that the defendants caused the death of people, including a police officers and civilians during the armed robbery in Offa, on April, 2018, which is punishable by death.

Earlier, the lead prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Jacob (SAN), said that the prosecution was able to prove his case beyond reasonable doubt and the judgement was done accordingly.

Jacob said that the six years spent on the case was worth it, as evidence clearly showed that the convicts were involved in the robbery and killings.

READ ALSO: Senate confirms Justice Kekere-Ekun as Chief Justice of Nigeria

He said that the trials had been concluded and the prosecutors had proved their case beyond reasonable doubt for the suspects to be convicted.

The lead defence counsel, Nathaniel Emeribe, represented by Abdullahi Jimba said that the judgment was not surprising, considering the evidence presented in court, it had been envisaged that it would end that way.

He, however, said that in line with the case of AG Oyo State with Bello, there would definitely be an appeal and record would be compiled and moved to the court of appeal.

The prime suspect, a policeman, Michael Adikwu died in police custody during the trial while the remaining five pleaded for mercy but were convicted.

Dr James Jacob, Director, Disease Control and Immunisation, disclosed this in Yola on Tuesday.

He said so far no fewer than 13,084 children were vaccinated and the cases of the disease had reduced.

According to him, the success recorded so far was as a result of political will by the top government officials in the state.

READ ALSO: Air Peace speaks on alleged safety violations in UK

He said that there was no new case as of last week but active search cases were still ongoing.

Jacob called on parents and community leaders to ensure that all eligible children were vaccinated, not only for measles but to have hard immunity.

“Why we are saying this is because, if the targeted children in communities are properly vaccinated, the community will have what is called hard immunity.

“This will make it difficult for any outbreak in those communities”, he said.

I’ve seen many people go close to paralysis because, just because, Dele Alake ended up with the Solid Minerals Development ministerial portfolio. I don’t understand why. Is the Nigerian journalist such a one-trick pony that beyond speaking for the government, he/she can’t do anything else?

Dele Alake

Is Alake so limited that he is unable to do anything beyond press statements, snap appearances on Arise News, TVC, Channels, AIT and full residency on NTA? Has journalism not produced governors, including of the CBN or did those chaps go to study Government and Civics before getting into office?

It is not bright to typecast the journalist like Olu Jacobs as Igwe in Igbo films, Dejo Tunfunlu as career moronic gateman and Opebe as a man with a withered hand irrespective of the story.

It is not bright to typecast the journalist like Olu Jacobs as Igwe in Igbo films, Dejo Tunfunlu as career moronic gateman and Opebe as a man with a withered hand irrespective of the story. It is not bright. Have journalists performed worse than other professionals on assignments outside the newsrooms? Is it that people are unaware that journalism has an administrative component? Can’t and won’t understand this exhibition of narrow-mindedness, including, frighteningly, by journalists.

READ ALSO: EXTRA: In Ortom, Benue has lost a gem, By Bamidele Johnson

I’m also unable to understand why it is only the assignment of portfolios at the national level that is subjected to pseudo-forensic scrutiny. It is as if state governors have the licence to appoint buskers, barbers, jesters and “furniture” as commissioners. The scrutiny is meagre, if it exists at all. I don’t remember any, actually. We don’t appear to care that the level of government closer to us can be peopled by misfits. We need to give our head a wobble.
