The Nigeria Hotel Association, NHA, has warned that it would soon begin the shutdown of unregistered hotels in the country.

The association’s president, Eze Patrick Anyanwu, made the announcement while addressing newsmen during a parley of its national executive and state chairmen in Owerri, on Thursday.

The traditional ruler, who spoke on the first day of the two-day meeting, said that the unruly activities of criminals who lodged in unregistered hotels was a major contributor to insecurity in the country.

He called on all hotel owners to identify with the NHA or risk shutdown through the use of legal force, describing the hospitality industry as “one of the most important drivers of economic growth in Nigeria.”

“In the near future, hotels that refuse to register with the NHA will face penalties and may risk being shut down as part of efforts to sanitize the industry.

“We cannot continue to allow any hotel that is not registered to operate and damage the reputation of our association because they use such facilities to commit crime that affects the nation in general,” he said.

He further urged the government at all levels to provide interventions such as grants or bailout funds to support the association and its members nationwide.

He commended the federal government and the Imo State government for their efforts at promoting tourism and creating an enabling environment for the growth of the hospitality sector.

He however, decried the multiple taxation of hoteliers across Nigeria and called for caution, while urging various state governments to work cooperatively with hoteliers in their domains.

“In consideration of our huge contribution to employment, revenue generation, accommodation of government visitors from all over the world and national development, it is only fair that the government supports us.

“The recent action of the National Institute of Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) has been seriously affecting the hospitality industry, especially hotels over implementation of NIHOTOUR Act 2022, and this is not in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government.

“This is against the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that put tourism services under a residual list and has to stop, as we will not allow any agency or group to harass or intimidate our members,” he said.

The Imo Police Command says it has dismantled a notorious robbery syndicate in a successful operation that led to the detention of five suspects and recovery of 450 allegedly stolen motorcycles.

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, DSP Henry Okoye, disclosed this at a news briefing in Owerri, on Sunday.

Okoye said “the breakthrough followed a successful operation” that targeted armed robbery, attempted murder, and vehicle snatching across the state.

He paraded the suspects before newsmen on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Mr Audu Bosso.

He said that the operatives also recovered N6.4 million cash and different number plates.

Okoye said that the operation was conducted by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, led by ACP Oladimeji Odeyeyiwa.

“The investigation began on April 6, after a commercial shuttle bus driver, Mr Paul Ohaka, who left home for work on April 5, was declared missing.

“Subsequently, the driver was found abandoned unconscious at Irete on the Onitsha Road axis, while the vehicle had been forcefully taken by unknown assailants.

“The assailants had attacked him on April 5, assumed he was dead and fled with his vehicle,” Okoye said.

He said the victim was immediately evacuated to a hospital, where he was said to be currently receiving medical attention.

He said that detectives tracked the stolen bus to a workshop in Orlu.

“During a coordinated operation, the vehicle was recovered just as the suspects were allegedly preparing to repaint it to hide its original identity,” Okoye said.

He said that two suspects, identified as Olagoke Jelili and Godday Ezike, were apprehended at the workshop.

He said that their detention provided “the lead needed to capture three additional members of the criminal gang”.

According to the PPRO, the suspects reportedly tried to bribe the police with N5 million to escape justice.

“However, the operatives rejected the cash, upholding the command’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption,” he said.

He said that charms and other incriminating exhibits were also seized from the gang’s various hideouts.

Okoye further said that the suspects were unable to provide valid proof of ownership of the recovered motorcycles.

He said that the syndicate attempted to hide the bikes in bushes, where they were recovered.

He said: “The Commissioner of Police has ordered a full-scale prosecution of all individuals involved.

“The command remains committed to ensuring that criminal elements found no safe haven within the state,” Okoye said.

The Police Command in Imo has launched a manhunt for the killers of Eze Paulinus Ekwueme, the traditional ruler of Ochia Autonomous Community, Ohaji/Egbema local government area of the state.

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen on Saturday.

Ekwueme, it was reported, was attacked and killed by armed hoodlums on Friday, at Assa community on Asa Awara Road, Ohaji/Egbema local government area.

Okoye stated that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Audu Bosso, had deployed the command’s tactical units, in synergy with other security agencies, to hunt down the hoodlums responsible for the dastardly attack.

‎“‎The deployment followed a distress report received from Ohaji Police Division on April 10, at about 1630hrs, indicating that armed assailants attacked Ekwueme along Asa Awara Road.

“Regrettably, the attack led to the death of the monarch, Ekwueme, the Ochia I of Ochia Kingdom, alongside five other yet-to-be-identified victims,” he stated.

‎‎Okoye stated that the dispatched tactical teams recovered the burnt corpses of the deceased.

According to him, the remains have been evacuated and deposited at the Federal University Teaching Hospital, FUTH, Owerri, for preservation and autopsy.

“‎Consequently, the command has commenced a comprehensive investigation into the incident, while intensive operations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and recover any weapons in their possession,” he said.

Okoye stated that adequate security measures had also been placed to forestall any future occurrence of such a tragic incident in the area and its environs.

‎The spokesman further disclosed that Bosso and his management team later embarked on an on-the-spot assessment and confidence-building visit to Ochia community to reassure residents of enhanced sustained security.

‎‎”The commissioner sympathised with the family of the late traditional ruler and other deceased victims, and assured residents that the command remained fully committed to sustaining peace and security in the state.

“In no distant time, the perpetrators will be arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law,” he added.

‎‎Okoye urged members of the public to volunteer credible information that would aid the command’s ongoing investigation.

He urged them to report to the nearest police station or contact the command through 08034773600 and 08148024755.

Troops operating under 34 Artillery Brigade have reopened Lilu–Eketutu Road between boundaries of Anambra and Imo states shut for three years due to activities of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

The troops, in collaboration with personnel of Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, Department of State Services, Nigeria Police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, “also destroyed IPOB’s Eastern Security Network (ESN), bomb factory in Imo.”

This announcement is contained in a statement issued by Lt.-Col. Olabisi Ayeni, acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 82 Division Nigerian Army, on Friday in Enugu.

Ayeni noted that the operations, conducted in the Orsu–Eketutu Mother Valley and Orsu–Ihiteukwa general areas, were part of ongoing efforts to eliminate Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs, planted by criminal elements.

He said that the operations were also meant to facilitate the safe return of residents who were forced to abandon their homes due to the activities of the proscribed IPOB and its armed affiliate, ESN.

According to him, in one of the operations, troops operating under 34 Artillery Brigade conducted a joint clearance operation along the Lilu–Eketutu Road in the Orsu–Eketutu Mother Valley area of Imo on March 6.

“The road, which serves as a strategic route that functions as the community’s lifeline, enabling the flow of people, goods, and services for surrounding communities, had been abandoned for over three years.

“This is due to persistent threats and attacks by IPOB/ESN militants.

“During the operations, troops discovered IED planted at different areas along the road.

“The IEDs were successfully disconnected and safely recovered by Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists, preventing potential casualties and restoring access to the route,” he said.

Ayeni said that in a related operation, on March 11, troops conducted clearance operation in Orsu–Ihiteukwa area; clearing suspected IED locations along key routes to enhance security and enable displaced inhabitants to return safely to their homes.

He said, “During the operation, several IEDs were detonated along the route of advance.

“Despite the series of explosions, troops maintained operational momentum and discovered an IPOB/ESN IED-making factory within the area.

“The facility was thoroughly exploited, leading to the recovery of several items including Biafran flags and insignia, several rounds of 7.62 mm NATO ammunition and pipes used for priming IEDs.

“Other items recovered included: pistol magazines containing rounds of ammunition, double-barrel guns, CCTV cameras, as well as multiple clips and electrical wires suspected to have been used in the fabrication of explosive devices.”

The army spokesman said that additionally, EOD teams discovered many other IEDs concealed within the area; while the explosives were carefully disconnected, recovered, and safely destroyed.

He said that the Nigerian Army was committed to sustaining pressure on criminal networks threatening peace and security across Imo and Anambra states and the entire South East.

“Members of the public are requested to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies, as community cooperation is vital to dismantling criminal syndicates and restoring lasting peace.

“Operation UDOKA is committed to protecting law-abiding citizens, securing lives and property and completely reinforcing regional stability,” he said.

The Police Force and Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, NSIB, have confirmed a Tuesday night crash landing of a chartered aircraft at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri, Imo.

No death was recorded during the incident, however.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, has a call sign ASR, Registration Number 5N-ASR, a C-172 aircraft, operated by SkyPower Express.

The aircraft was from Kaduna, en route to Port Harcourt, when it made an emergency landing at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Airport Command, Lagos, ASP Mohammed Adeola, said the incident occurred at about 6:58 p.m. on Tuesday.

Adeola said that the aircraft experienced a crash landing at the threshold of Runway 17, sustaining varying degrees of damage.

He said there were four crew members on board at the time of the incident.

“Upon receipt of the distress information, the airport police patrol units, in collaboration with airport emergency response teams, were swiftly deployed to the scene.

“All occupants were successfully rescued.

“Two of the crew members were in stable condition, while the remaining two, who were initially unconscious, were immediately evacuated to the hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention,” he stated.

Adeola further said that airport operations had remained uninterrupted, as the situation was promptly brought under control.

He added that the affected area remained under close monitoring to ensure continued safety and security, while relevant aviation authorities had commenced the necessary technical assessments, in line with standard operating procedures.

“The Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, Olufunke Ogunbode, commends the professionalism and rapid coordination of all responding agencies.

“Ogunbode reassures the public of the command’s unshaken commitment to aviation safety, public security, and effective emergency response across all airports,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, NSIB has also issued a statement, signed by the Director, Public Affairs and Family Assistance of NSIB, Mrs Bimbo Oladeji, also confirming the incident.

“The crew declared an emergency, necessitating a diversion to Owerri, where the aircraft subsequently crash landed in the approach area of Runway 17.

“There were four people on board at the time of the accident, with no fatalities reported so far,” she stated.

The director stated that there was equally no post-crash fire, adding that the runway remained active for flight operations, with other aircraft taking off safely after the incident.

“Efforts are currently underway to coordinate the recovery and evacuation of the distressed aircraft from the crash site to allow for a detailed wreckage examination.

“The Director-General of bureau, Capt. Alex Badeh Jr., expressed his deepest sympathies to the management of Skypower Express and is glad that no fatalities were reported.

“The NSIB has activated its protocols, and our team is already coordinating with authorities to secure the site,” the statement added.

The Imo Police Command has said that it has recorded great milestone in the fight against terrorism and violent crimes with the detention of 957 terror, armed robbery and kidnap suspects in two months.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Aboki Danjuma, told newsmen in Owerri on Friday that nine kidnap victims and seven stolen children were also rescued and reunited with their family members.

“One of the major breakthroughs was the arrest of notorious IPOB/ESN terrorists and recovery of arms, ammunition and incriminating items.

“Investigations further led to the arrest of some of their sponsors and financiers drastically reducing their nefarious activities and cutting off funding channels.

“In synergy with other security agencies, the command also dislodged IPOB/ESN camps and kidnapping dens in Okigwe, Mbaitoli, Owerri West and Njaba Local Government Areas, and other areas in the state, striking a decisive blow to their capacity for further attacks,” he said.

The police boss said: “On September 16, my men from the anti-kidnapping unit, led by ACP Oladimeji Odeyeyiwa, and the Special Intervention Squad, led by CSP Gboyako Adamu, stormed an IPOB/ESN camp at Obudi Agwa in Oguta LGA.

“The hoodlums engaged us in a fierce gun battle but were overpowered by our superior firepower.

“Sixteen suspects, including their sub-commander, Uzoechi Okechukwu, were arrested.”

Danjuma further said that Uchechukwu Nwachukwu, 25, and Chinonso Ozuruigbo, 32, were currently under detention for alleged kidnap of Anayo Iwuoha, 48, on June 18, 2025 at Akabo, Ikeduru LGA.

“The suspects collected ransom of N3 million and were still demanding N10 million as condition for the victim’s release,” he said.

The police boss said that following incessant kidnapping, armed robbery attacks and other heinous crimes, the command on September 9, arrested and detained a suspected member of IPOB/ESN, Chukwuebika Eruruogu, 27.

He alleged that Eruruogu was terrorising Mbaitoli, Njaba and Orlu local government areas before his detention.

Danjuma also said that four suspected members of a cult group were being detained over the death of Chidubem Orji, who was killed during an attempt to initiate him into the group.

He said that items recovered from the suspects included some defunct Biafra currencies, N1,000 counterfeit notes used within their hideouts.

According to him, the command also recovered marijuana, laptops, cellphones, AK-47 rifles, pump action guns, ammunition, double-barrel guns, locally-fabricated pistols, charms, cartons of cartridges and a register used for training and roll calls.

“We have started blocking the channels where they get their weapons from,” he said.

He however said that his men sustained minor injuries throughout the two-month operation.

Danjuma lauded Governor Hope Uzodimma for his consistent support in welfare and logistics which, he said, greatly boosted their operational capacity.

He also commended the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Kayode Egbetokun, for guiding the command to success.

He assured residents of the state of the command’s commitment to rid the state of crime and ensure a safe environment for all.

By ALHAZAN ABIODUN RILWAN

I am writing to draw attention to a pressing issue affecting parents, students, and the education system in Oyo State: the frequent and unnecessary annual changes to school textbooks, especially by private school owners.

While schools may justify this practice as a means to update curricula or align with new standards, it places an undue financial burden on families, undermines sustainability, and does not always translate to improved educational outcomes.

Each academic session, parents in Oyo State are compelled to purchase new sets of textbooks for their children, even when the content of these books differs only marginally from previous editions. This practice is particularly challenging for low- and middle-income families who struggle to afford these recurring costs. For example, a single textbook can cost between ₦5,000 and ₦15,000, and with multiple subjects, the expenses quickly become overwhelming. This financial strain often forces parents to prioritize basic needs over education, potentially impacting students’ access to essential learning materials.

Moreover, the constant change in textbooks contributes to waste, as older editions are discarded despite being reusable. This practice contradicts efforts to promote sustainability and efficient resource use. It also raises concerns about transparency, as some schools may be influenced by publishers or other stakeholders to adopt new textbooks unnecessarily, potentially prioritizing profit over educational quality.

Encouragingly, several other Nigerian states have already taken decisive steps to curb this issue, offering models Oyo State could emulate. For instance, Imo State has prohibited annual replacements, mandating textbooks for a minimum of four years in both public and private schools. Edo State similarly requires reuse for at least four years, while Ogun State enforces a six-year cycle before any changes, with sanctions for non-compliance.

Enugu State reviews and approves textbooks for three-year periods, and Benue State has abolished non-transferable customized books to promote handover from seniors to juniors.

These policies not only alleviate parental burdens but also foster resource efficiency and consistent learning.

While the Oyo State Government has a responsibility to intervene and regulate this practice, I propose the following measures:

– Standardize Textbook Usage: The government should establish a policy mandating schools to use approved textbooks for a minimum period (e.g., 3–5 years) unless significant curriculum changes justify updates.

– Strengthen Oversight: The Ministry of Education should monitor schools to ensure compliance and investigate cases where textbook changes appear driven by commercial interests.

– Promote Reuse and Affordability: This will encourage schools to implement textbook recycling programmes and provide subsidies or free textbooks for indigent students.

– Engage Stakeholders: Involve parents, teachers, and education experts in reviewing textbook policies to ensure they prioritize student welfare and learning outcomes.

By addressing this issue, the Oyo State Government can alleviate the financial burden on families, promote equitable access to education, and foster a more sustainable learning environment—much like its neighboring states.

I urge policymakers to act swiftly to regulate textbook changes and prioritize the interests of students and parents.
