The Police Command in Lagos State has inaugurated the “Command Sweepers Squad”, a special tactical unit aimed at curbing the surge in crime in Ikorodu and nearby communities.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, made this known in a statement on Monday in Lagos.

She said the initiative, introduced under the Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Tijani, followed growing complaints from residents about a surge in crime across parts of Ikorodu.

“The squad is a temporary intervention security outfit established to restore public confidence and strengthen security operations in the area.

“The outfit comprises officers drawn from various tactical formations of the command, including the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Eko Strike Force, 2 PMF, 22 PMF, and 63 PMF, alongside personnel from other security agencies and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF.

“The squad has been strategically stationed in Ijede to ensure rapid deployment and easy access to all parts of Ikorodu and neighbouring communities for swift crime prevention and emergency response operations,” she said.

According to her, the squad has been equipped with operational vehicles and three Armoured Personnel Carriers recently donated to the command by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund to enhance operational effectiveness.

She explained that operatives had already been deployed to identify black spots and criminal hideouts, and were conducting intelligence-led raids, stop-and-search operations, as well as confidence-building patrols aimed at flushing out criminal elements and protecting lives and property.

The spokesperson said that CP Tijani assured residents that the operations would be carried out professionally and in line with the rule of law.

The image maker urged the public to remain vigilant and support security agencies with timely and credible information through the command’s emergency lines: 07061019374, 08065154338, 08063299264, 08039344870, and 09168630929.

Lagos State governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, inaugurated ultra-modern block of classrooms with a mini football pitch and a multi-purpose sports court at Keme Balogun Junior/Senior College, Ibeshe, Ikorodu.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also commissioned a modern block of classrooms and other facilities at Ajegunle Junior High School, Owode-Onirin in Kosofe and Odogunyan Junior Grammar School in Ikorodu.

The inauguration heralded the commissioning of 16 ultra-modern blocks of classrooms of secondary schools facilitated by the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools, SCRPS, across the six education districts in Lagos State.

Other school projects are located in Awori Junior College, Ojo; Euba Junior High School, Mushin; Ipara Junior College, Majiyagbe; Mainland Junior Secondary School, Fadeyi; St. Luke Junior Secondary School, Bariga; State Junior High School, Ibereko, Badagry; and Thogli Community Grammar School, also in Badagry.

Speaking during the inauguration, Governor Sanwo-Olu said his administration is committed to fulfilling its part of providing first-class infrastructure in schools, as well as providing teachers who are well-educated to teach the students.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was received by a large crowd of residents and students with his entourage, also charged parents to ensure that they engage their wards by talking to them to give them a well-rounded future.

He said: “These ambitious events consolidate our commitment to the development and pursuit of educational excellence and socio-economic development in Lagos. Education, a cornerstone of our THEMES+ development agenda, is the engine that drives economic growth, reduces inequality, and empowers individuals to break the cycle of poverty. By investing in these schools, we are investing in the socio-economic fabric of this community.

“These newly renovated and constructed facilities will serve as a catalyst for change, providing our children with the tools they need to compete in an increasingly globalised world. The construction of a block of 18 classrooms, the renovation of existing structures, and the addition of modern facilities like the food canteen, Intro-Tech block, and sports fields will create an environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and physically. But the benefits do not stop there.

“These projects already created jobs during their construction phase, providing livelihoods for local workers and stimulating the local economy. Moving forward, the improved infrastructure will enhance the quality of education and increase enrollment rates. This, in turn, will lead to a more educated and skilled workforce, capable of driving innovation and economic development in our state.

“This school reconstruction also sends a powerful message to the community: that education matters, that our children matter, and that their future is worth investing in. It is a message that will inspire parents to prioritise their children’s education, encourage students to dream bigger, and motivate the entire community to take pride in this institution.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu also charged secondary students on academic excellence in their West African School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

“To my students, I want to thank you, and I can’t wait for the next WAEC examinations at the senior level. I want you all to do very well so that I can come back and do a good job for those schools and other schools from here also,” he said.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also commended the leadership of SCRPS for ensuring that all schools in Lagos State are equipped to meet the goals of his administration.

He assured that his government will continue to ensure that it did not only complete school projects, but also equip them with all that were needed so as to meet the goals of his administration.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also promised to deliver some of the ongoing road projects in Ikorodu and build more primary and secondary schools for the benefit of the residents.

Speaking earlier, Lagos State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Tolani Alli-Balogun, said the commissioning of the school projects was part of the state government plan to promote top-notch education to all students, noting that the projects highlighted the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to the educational and holistic well-being of the students.

The commissioner said that the structures would not only enhance academic excellence, but also provide a conducive environment for students’ learning.

He said the football court would provide students the opportunity to engage in physical activities and wellbeing, adding that it would also serve as a catalyst for academic excellence, physical development and personal growth.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of SCRPS, Mr. Hakeem Smith, praised Governor Sanwo-Olu for the school rehabilitation initiative, support and follow-through to ensure the achievement of the task of rebuilding schools in Lagos State.

The Christ Mitots School in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has suspended a 45-year-old teacher, Stella Nwadigo, who was seen in a video abusing a three-year-old pupil for his inability to write numbers.

The school confirmed the suspension in a statement issued by its management on Thursday.

A two-minute video which went viral on Wednesday had shown the teacher slapping the toddler for not learning number writing fast.

The video attracted public condemnation, which led to the teacher’s arrest.

In the statement, the school condemned the teacher’s action, describing it as unacceptable.

“We are aware of a deeply troubling incident involving a teacher engaging in physical discipline of a student in a manner that is completely unacceptable.

“As an institution that is deeply committed to fostering a culture of respect, care and dignity, we are horrified by this incident and wish to make it clear that such actions will not be tolerated.

“In response, the teacher involved has been suspended indefinitely, while a thorough investigation is being conducted,” it said.

The school said that its immediate and decisive action reflected its zero-tolerance for misconduct and its obligation to safeguard every child under its care.

“As such, we have an open door policy to provide students, parents and guardians with a safe space to voice any concerns without fear,” it said.

The school said that it had apologised to the pupil and his family.

“We have reached out to them to express our regret.

“We ask for the public’s patience and understanding as we work to address this matter responsibly and comprehensively.

“We will be organising mandatory training sessions for teachers to reinforce child protection protocols, emphasise positive disciplinary practices, and cultivate greater sensitivity in interactions with students, ” it added.

According to the school, it has also introduced a whistle-blowing system to encourage prompt reporting of inappropriate behaviour.

The Police Command in Lagos State says the 45-year-old teacher, Stella Nwadigo, who allegedly abused a three-year-old pupil of Christ-Mitots School in Ikorodu area of the state is already in its custody.

The command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in a post he shared on his X handle @benHundeyin on Wednesday.

“The teacher is currently in our custody, while investigation is ongoing,” he said.

It could be recalled in a two-minute video, which went viral on Wednesday morning, that a teacher was seen subjecting the boy to rounds of slaps over his inability to write numerical figures.

The teacher asked the boy to write 61 and 62, she slapped him five times for not quickly grasping her number writing instructions.

Also reacting to the video, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, DSVA, confirmed that the teacher had been apprehended in a post it shared on its verified X handle @LSdsva on Wednesday.

“We appreciate everyone, who brought the disturbing incident of a teacher, who was recorded physically abusing a three-year-old boy to our attention.

“We are pleased to inform the public that the teacher in question has been arrested by Owutu Police Family Support Unit, and an investigation has commenced in earnest.

“Indeed, institutions of learning should be safe, warm, and protective environments for all children in their care,” it stated.

In a world where health is wealth, Kola Kuforiji, a Nigerian journalist who had worked for about two decades with Rhythm FM (Sliverbird Group) reporting business is facing an unthinkable challenge, and needs urgent help.

Kola, a 54-year-old husband and father of two, whose life was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with a drug-resistant, Parkinson’s disease with pronounced difficulty in walking and tremor has been very ill for more than two years and the severity and debilitating nature of his illness has depleted the finances of his family.

He was initially treated at Ikorodu General Hospital, Lagos, where a presumptive diagnosis of his medical condition was made.

He was over a year ago referred to LASUTH, but there has been little improvement in his health.

Medical treatment abroad now offers the best option for his recovery with a recommendation from Atasehir Medicana International Hospital – Atasehir / Istanbul, Turkey confirming that he will need a Deep Brain Stimulation surgery.

The expected total cost of the Deep Brain Stimulation surgery with travelling expenses is put at $35,000 (USD) about N57 million at recent exchange rate.

Meanwhile friends of Kola have initiated moves to seek financial support from concerned citizens to help bridge the gap and ensure that he receives the care he needs to overcome this challenge.

A bank account to receive fund for the urgent medical intervention has been opened for donation that will bring hope and healing to Kola and his family.

Name of Account: SOS FOR JOURNALIST KOLA KUFORIJI

Account Number: 1790322317

Bank: Polaris Bank

Kola’s story is one of courage, resilience, and determination, but it’s also a story of urgent need.

He had worked for about two decades with Rhythm FM (Sliverbird Group) covering business at large and had contributed immensely to deepening understanding of the economy.

Over the years, he has explored his media platform as a strong tool to drive financial inclusion and expanding frontier of knowledge of Nigerians on the activities and stride of the energy, banking and finance sectors at large to national development.

Despite his illness, Kola remains hopeful and determined to overcome.
