The Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, General Olufemi Oluyede, has urged the media to embrace factual, balanced, and conflict-sensitive reporting.

Oluyede spoke on Tuesday through Major Gen Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, DDI, at the press week lecture and awards ceremony organised by the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ.

The Defence Chief said responsible journalism could deprive terrorists and bandits of the oxygen they thrived on.

He said the theme for the press week, ‘2027 Election: Defending Democracy in the Era of Misinformation’, was significant considering the nation’s complex security and information environment.

“The media remains a critical pillar of our democracy and a vital instrument for national cohesion, public enlightenment, and accountability,” Oluyede said.

“Let me reiterate that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to safeguarding the lives and property of all citizens in line with our constitutional mandate.

“In pursuit of this duty across various theatres of operation, we have come to recognise more than ever that the press is a partner to the military in the collective effort to build a safe, stable, and prosperous nation. This partnership is not one of convenience but of necessity.

“While the military secures the physical space, the media shapes the information space. The narratives you project influence public perception, prove morale, and even the strategic outcomes of military operations.

“When reporting is factual, balanced, and conflict-sensitive, it denies oxygen to terrorism, banditry, and disinformation.

“It builds trust between the armed forces and the people we serve. Therefore, as we celebrate your contributions, I must also emphasise that responsible journalism is essential to national security.

“In this digital age where a single tweet can travel faster than a battalion, the ethical responsibility of the press has never been greater.

“I urge you to continue to verify before you publish, to prioritise national interests without sacrificing truth, and to give voice to the sacrifices of our troops who stand in harm’s way so that others may live in peace.

“On behalf of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, I congratulate the chairlady, executives, and all members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ Federal Capital Territory chapter on this press week.

“I commend your resilience, courage, and patriotism, often displayed under very difficult conditions.

“May your pains continue to defend the truth, and may your work strengthen the unity of our great nation.”

Grace Ike, chairperson of the NUJ FCT council, said the press week offered journalists the opportunity to reflect on the state of the profession and renew their commitment to ethical journalism.

“As we move closer to the 2027 general elections, the media must remain vigilant, responsible, and courageous in the face of misinformation, fake news, propaganda, and deliberate attempts to distort public opinion,” she said.

Ike said the media had a sacred duty to protect truth, defend accountability and preserve the integrity of the nation’s democratic process.

Moved by positive emotions on how to address and arrest the plight of the less-privileged in the society, the House of Representatives Press Corps at the weekend visited Karu Ophanage and presented gifts, food items and clothings.

In her remarks during the event, the chairman of the House Press Corps, Grace Ike, challenged good spirited Nigerians and governments at all levels to cooperate with organisations, NGOs to always assist orphanages in the country.

The chairman, while presenting the items on behalf of the press corps to the management of the home, urged them not to look at the quantity of items that were presented but the motive and intent.

The chairman further explained during the visit that the corps under her leadership had decided to visit the home in view of the ‘season’ as it had provided ample opportunity for all including media practitioners to demonstrate generosity to people, especially those lacking fundamental human needs in the society.

On her reasons for the visit, the chairman HORPC stated “some people might assume that the primary responsibility of a journalist is to inform, educate and entertain but we also care because we are the conscience of society. Please, accept our token donation. Do not look at the quantity but the intention behind it- which is love.

“I will also use this opportunity to appeal to other spirited individuals to always remember our children in orphanages and hospitals. We know that government alone cannot do it but with the assistance of other well-meaning Nigerians, the welfare and condition of our orphanages will be improved.”

He emphasized on the need for security within the premises stressing feeding as a problem.

In his remarks, the administrator of the home, Musa Danjuma, commended the journalists for the visit and presentation of gifts, promising to put all items donated to good use and for the purposed meant for.

Danjuma further stated that his orphanage home accepted children from all parts of the country through the Gender Department of Social Development Secretariat in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

He emphasized that some children at the home were for adoption while others were not.

He said that the home was sustained by subvention from Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, donors from individuals, cooperate organisation and NGOs among others.

Polaris Bank on Tuesday launched its much anticipated revolutionary digital banking platform, VULTe.

In his welcome address at the well-attended unveiling ceremony which held at Eko Hotel, Lagos and virtually to national and global audience, Chairman of the Bank, M.K Ahmad (OON) disclosed that the corporate goal of Polaris is to offer customers and non-customers of the Bank, a 24-hour seamless service over two years ago when the Polaris journey started which led to the pursuit and now actualization of VULTe.

“This is a milestone in our pursuit of a strong and digitally-led retail brand. When we started the Polaris journey almost three years ago, we were very clear on the type of Bank we must build and the direction we must go. This was largely informed by the fast pace of change in financial service provisioning and the apparent technology-defined outlook of our business.

“We are therefore bringing VULTe to the market place today. And this is not another mobile App, but one with a world of difference, a mobile digital bank. This is your Bank in your hand, affording you total Control of your financial service needs. With VULTe, you serve yourself, the way you want to be served,” the chairman explained.

In his keynote address, the Acting Managing Director/CEO of the Bank, Mr. Innocent C. Ike said the newly-launched banking platform, is returning all powers to the customer as king.

He noted that customers are now at liberty to enjoy unhindered, contactless and refreshing banking experience all at the tip of their fingers thanks to the newly launched VULTe app.

“With VULTe, we affirm our resolve to serve the customer better and make their banking experience, more pleasurable. Therefore, we will continue to launch an array of banking products to cater to the varying needs of our diverse customers.”

Explaining the premium value the Bank places on its customer with the VULTe, Ike said: “Ultimately, VULTe represents our bold declaration to hand over CONTROL of banking services to our customers and allow them to serve themselves as they would want to be served.

“As a Polaris Bank customer, you are at liberty to determine your banking experience since we have put the Bank in your hand 24/7. You now have total CONTROL to serve yourself; it’s no more customer service but customer self-service.

“Are you opening an account, setting limits on your account, verifying your identity documents, registering your biometrics, making inquiries, taking an instant loan? You are in total CONTROL – you do it at your time, at your convenience, and on your terms – you determine how delightful your banking experience will be.”

The highlight of the launching was the practical demonstration of the uniqueness of the VULTe application by the Bank’s Chief Digital Officer, Mr. Bamidele Adeyinka to the excited guests.

According to him, “The Digital Banking Platform, VULTE, will change everything that happens in the ‘brick & mortar’ space (i.e. branches) to clicks and buttons.”

“The VULTE comes in mobile (Android and iOS) and Web Applications and it allows customers with either of the options, to access banking services at the click of the button,” he added.

The CDO explained that all Bank customers in the country can take advantage of the VULTe to carry out their banking transactions including account opening, bills payments, transfers, balance enquiry, airtime rechage and quick loans.

He further stated that on-boarded customers will be able to access PayDay Loan on both mobile and web digital platform where eligibility will be displayed to the customer within the VULTe application.

Also, on-boarded customers will be enabled to pay taxes and levies for different government parastatals in addition to several other benefits such as ability to perform intra-bank and inter-bank transfers.

“To onboard, customers with BVN will input their BVN and take a selfie (photo of their face) which will be compared automatically with the photo on their BVN profile (via Facial Recognition – an advanced cognitive and artificial intelligence facial recognition technology),” the CDO disclosed.

Meanwhile, the Bank also announced special reward packages for early users of the VULTe app.

Reeling out giveaways and free gifts, Mr. Muhammed Abdullahi, Executive Director, Abuja and Northern Region of the Bank said: “For your loyalty and positive acceptance of VULTe and all other banking services offered by Polaris Bank, on behalf of the Board, Management and Staff, I’m happy to announce some mouthwatering offers to everyone following us to mark this occasion.

“Consequently, please note that the first 2000 persons who download VULTe from Appstore or PlayStore and make a transaction on the platform, stand to win a collection of beautiful mementos like Mugs, Michael Cable Charger, Key Rings, Pop Socket among other collection of gifts,” the ED said.

The launch event had in attendance representatives of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), key Financial Technology (FinTechs) industry players and strategic partners of Polaris Bank who all in their goodwill messages attested to the bank’s unwavering determination to ensuring quality customer satisfaction at all times.

Some of the dignitaries include: Prof. Olayinka David-West, Dean, Information Systems, Lagos Business School (LBS); Chief Demola Aladekomo, Chairman, Chams, Plc; Agada Apochi, Managing Director, Unified Payment Systems; Babatunde Okeniyi Managing Director, PayAttitude amongst others.

The five housemates were put on the nomination chop by Frodd, the veto power holder, on Monday.

Frodd, who won the ultimate veto task was given the power to put any five housemates up for eviction.

Earlier, the Pepper Dem gang strolled into the Diary Room to make their nominations, unaware of the surprise that awaited them.

With the individual nominations out of the way, the Ultimate Veto Power was put into play, making the previous nominations void.

In the presence of all the housemates, Frodd was given one minute to Nominate five housemates.

Without hesitation, Frodd went for the jugular and put up Cindy, Elozonam, Ike, Mike and Tacha on the nomination block.

News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that he could not nominate Mercy as she had purchased immunity to stay till the final week.

Biggie told her, “You are safe from tonight’s Nominations and henceforth guaranteed a place in the final week… unless you break the house rules and get disqualified.”

Seyi was also saved by the immunity that came with his Head of House privilege, a position he has held three times.
