No fewer than 30 students and a teacher of Our Lady of Apostle Secondary School, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State were hospitalised on Wednesday, following exposure to a suspected chemical odour within the school premises.

It was gathered that the incident, which occurred shortly after the morning assembly, caused panic as several students reportedly began vomiting and fainting.

Speaking with newsmen, the vice principal of the school, Mrs Adeola Borogun, said the situation was not caused by a gas explosion but by a strange odour perceived in the environment.

She said the development prompted the school authorities to immediately seek medical assistance.

“Several students began vomiting and fainting, forcing the school management to call for ambulances from the State General Hospital, Ijebu Ode,” she said.

When contacted, the State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, confirmed the incident, dismissing speculation that it was an explosion in the school premises.

He noted that investigation was ongoing to find out the actual cause of the incident.

“No, there is no explosion anywhere.

“It’s a gas leakage from somewhere. Some say it was from the school laboratory, but some say it must have been from somewhere around the community.

“We are bringing a gas analyser there now to analyse the type of gas and the concentration zone. So, that will give us the exact cause,” Oresanya said.

He added that the 30 students brought to the hospital are now in stable condition

Meanwhile, the chairman of Ijebu Ode local government, Dare Alebiosu, who visited the hospital, described the situation as calm and under control.

He assured parents and residents that a full investigation would be carried out to uncover the cause of the incident.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, has said that a truck laden with yams reportedly lost control and rammed into a stationary tricycle, killing one person and leaving three other occupants severely injured.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

Bakare-Oki said the fatal road traffic collision occurred at Aiyetoro Junction by the traffic light corridor in Epe, Lagos.

“Preliminary findings reveal that the loaded truck (AGL 764 XB) coming from Ijebu-Ode, attempted a U-turn inward Eleko at the junction when the driver reportedly lost control and violently rammed into a stationary tricycle (SMK 127 QR).

“The devastating impact claimed one life and left three other occupants with severe injuries,” he said.

He said that LASTMA officials, in concert with the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service, and military personnel, successfully extricated three critically injured victims from the mangled wreckage.

He noted that the FRSC conveyed the deceased and the injured victims to the General Hospital, Epe, for medical attention and necessary procedures.

“Security agencies maintained order throughout the rescue operation and facilitated the restoration of traffic flow,” he said.

Bakare-Oki urged security authorities to undertake a comprehensive investigation into the underlying cause of the accident, with a view to ensuring that any individual found culpable faced the appropriate legal consequences.

President Bola Tinubu has described the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, as an embodiment of integrity, humility, culture, dedication, and service to humanity.

The Awujale passed away on Sunday, July 13, and was interred the following day.

At the eighth-day prayer held on Sunday for the late monarch at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, President Tinubu said the Awujale was a pride of the Yoruba race.

“Today marks a significant day in our nation’s history, particularly in the history of the Yoruba people. Nowhere will you find a better definition of our culture than in the life of the late Awujale,” President Tinubu said.

He noted that the late Awujale left behind legacies worthy of emulation and recalled the prayers and support he received from the late Oba during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State and in the run-up to his assumption of the presidency.

“I succeeded because of your support and the blessings of the late Awujale. I came to him; he blessed me and said, ‘You will win that election.’ Today, he is no more, but God has blessed us, especially if we heed the richness of his wisdom,” the president stated.

President Tinubu described Oba Adetona as a worthy leader—bold, courageous, and truthful—adding that “he would never deceive you.”

“To honour this great man, we must be more united, bonded in the spirit he left behind, and appreciate his legacy, even in death. We have named institutions after him, and his legacy will endure. It is up to each of us to remember the values he represented. May God grant him Aljannah Firdaus,” President Tinubu said.

He commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for his exemplary relationship with the late Oba and for caring for him both in life and death.

“I have listened to Governor Abiodun and cannot express how much I thank you for caring for our father, a leader of our conscience. Before he died, he brought honour to the Yoruba race. I am extremely proud of him; he was always there for us in times of need,” President Tinubu stated. “I recall the June 12 episode, and many other moments in his palace—our resistance, our determination to reverse the annulment of June 12. Papa was steadfast, resolute, and very encouraging. That he lived to see the calendar as a 91-year-old, and to witness the conferment of the Grand Commander of the Niger at age 90, is a source of immense pride.”

President Tinubu also recalled the counsel and prayers he received from the late Oba during his tenure as Governor of Lagos State and in the lead-up to the 2023 presidential election.

“I came to him for prayers before the election, and he gave me his blessings.”

The president offered prayers for strength and solace for the bereaved family and all those mourning the passing of the departed Oba.

Governor Dapo Abiodun thanked President Tinubu for coming to commiserate with the family of the late Awujale.

The governor highlighted the numerous contributions the late monarch made to Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria as a whole.

“Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona was more than a monarch. He lived a full life of 91 years, with 65 years on the throne,” he stated. “His reign brought development not only to Ijebuland, but across the Western region and Nigeria as a whole.”

Muslim clerics, led by Imam Prof. Kamaldeen Balogun, the Grand Mufti of Egbaland, offered prayers for the late monarch and reflected on the certainty of death.

The Imam reminded the gathering that “only our good deeds while on earth will be of any worth upon our death.”

Earlier, at the Igbeba Palace of the late Oba, President Tinubu, accompanied by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, offered solemn prayers at the Oba’s tomb for the repose of his soul.

He later held a private meeting with the Oba’s family.

Ijebu Ode and environs in Ogun came alive with reverence and festivity on Sunday as residents gathered for the eight-day prayer in honour of the late Awujale, Oba Sikiru Adetona.

The ceremony marked the culmination of mourning and celebration for a royal father who ruled for 65 years and left an indelible mark on the Ijebu community.

Oba Adetona, aged 91, passed away on July 13 and was laid to rest the following day, in line with his expressed religious wishes.

By 8:00 a.m., crowds of residents had begun arriving at the Dipo Dina Stadium, venue of the event.

The stadium was a sea of colours, as men, women, and youths appeared in traditional and modern attire, reflecting the cultural richness of Ijebu heritage.

Traditional drums echoed across the venue, with local groups performing chants and dances in tribute to the late traditional ruler’s life and enduring legacy.

At Oba Adetona’s private residence, where President Bola Tinubu is expected to stop first, religious leaders and dignitaries gathered in solemn reflection and prayer.

The gathering included Muslim and Christian clerics, traditional rulers, political leaders, and citizens, all united in their respect for the late Oba.

Some dignitaries said that President Tinubu’s planned visit symbolised national recognition of Oba Adetona’s significance beyond Ijebu community and Ogun.

Sen. Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East, described the event as a solemn yet befitting occasion to honour one of Nigeria’s legendary traditional rulers.

Daniel said, “The news of the President attending brought joy across Ijebuland. It highlights the close relationship between the President and our royal father.

“The President’s presence at the prayers is historic. It will be remembered for generations across the Ijebu nation as a mark of deep respect.”

READ ALSO: Tinubu’s statesmanship rises above bitterness at Buhari’s burial

Also, Sheik Abdulrazaq Ishola, Grand Mufti of Muslims in Yoruba land, described the president’s attendance at the prayers as a significant gesture of honour to a revered and deserving Oba.

“The president’s attendance is not political but deeply symbolic. Oba Adetona was a pillar of support and faith throughout his life,” Ishola noted.

He recalled how the late Oba bridged tradition and religion gracefully and had insisted on Islamic burial rites while he was alive.

Ishola further remembered Oba Adetona’s advocacy for a bill that would allow traditional rulers to be buried in accordance with their religious beliefs.

The Islamic leader revealed that the Awujale had been recognised as Grand Commander of Muslim Obas in Yoruba land due to his unwavering Islamic commitment.

Most Rev. Michael Fape, Bishop of the Remo Anglican Diocese, eulogised the Oba as one who embraced and respected all religions during his reign.

“He led his people with wisdom and tolerance. Though Muslim, he related warmly with Christians and traditionalists alike,” Bishop Fape stated.

He recalled his close relationship with the late Oba, saying, “Oba Adetona lived above religious bias.

“He treated all faiths equally, as a true paramount ruler.”

Many in the Ijebu community echoed these sentiments, remembering the late Awujale as a unifying figure who transcended ethnic and religious boundaries.

Major markets such as Ita-Ale, Ita-Osu, and Oke-Aje were temporarily shut to enable full participation in the farewell ceremonies.

Traders and residents used the opportunity to offer prayers, sing traditional songs, and reflect on the Oba’s numerous contributions to their community.

The closure of economic activity highlighted the deep respect held for Oba Adetona and the significance of the eight-day prayer ceremony.

As Ijebu Ode mourned and celebrated, many said the Awujale’s passing marked the end of an era, but his legacy would live on.

No fewer than 10 persons have been confirmed dead, while three others sustained injuries in a lone crash involving a Mitsubishi bus on Ijebu-Ode–Ibadan Expressway.

Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, TRACE, in Ogun, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday.

Akinbiyi said the accident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday at Ome Bridge, Awa, along Ijebu-Ode–Ibadan highway in Ijebu North local government area.

He stated that the lone crash involved a Mitsubishi bus, registration number EJ829-LSR, which was conveying 15 passengers at the time.

According to Akinbiyi, seven male and three female passengers died.

Three others were injured, while a toddler and one adult escaped unhurt.

He said preliminary findings indicated that over-speeding and wrongful overtaking led to the accident.

“Eyewitnesses said the driver wrongly overtook another vehicle at high speed and could not regain control after noticing an oncoming vehicle.

“The driver veered off the road, hit an abandoned gravel pile beside the bridge, and plunged the vehicle into the river,” Akinbiyi explained.

He said the deceased were taken to Ijebu-Ode General Hospital’s morgue, while the injured were also being treated at the same facility.

The spokesperson urged motorists to avoid speeding and to refrain from travelling at night, stressing the importance of road safety at all times.

The traditional rites for the installation of a new Lapo Ekun of Ijebu Ode has begun, with Tunde Odulaja going into seclusion for seven days.

The event will culminate in a proper coronation on Saturday, October 12, 2024.

The seclusion, which started on Tuesday, October 1, is traditionally referred to as ilete, signalling the commencement of the enthronement process for traditional rulers and high ranking members of the Awujale council.

As the Lapo Ekun elect, Odulaja is compelled by tradition and historical antecedents to observe the ritual rites and go through the rigours of an initiation before the Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, can confer on him, the rulership of Ijasi community.

The seclusion is majorly for reflections and prayers for the Awujale and Ijebu Ode communities.

There will also be spiritual interventions for all other chiefs, Otunbas and the good people of Ijasi community.

Pledging that Ijasi and Ijebu-Ode would continue to thrive as a community under his reign, a visibly elated Odulaja said his vision for the people, was to see the Ijebu being vibrant in their commercial ventures and to see more of his people being educated.

He also appreciated the Awujale and the community for finding him worthy of the elevated throne.

He said: “I feel so elated that Kabiyesi Alayeluwa, the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr) Sikiru Adetona, CFR GCON, Ogbagba ll has recognised me as the next Lapo Ekun of Ijebu Ode.

“It’s a title exclusively for indigenes of Ijasi. I thank God that I have been chosen to represent my people, the good people of Ijasi, Ijebu Ode,” he said.

Stressing that he would prioritise the education of the girl child, Odulaja noted that the secular nature of the Ijebu was an added advantage for him and that he would tap into the opportunity to foster more friendship, unity and harmony during his reign.

He said: “We have Muslims, Christians and traditionalists and we all co-habit in peace. We will continue to thrive for a peaceful co-existence amongst our people to bring meaningful development to us the Ijebus.

“My vision of Ijasi/Ijebu Ode community is to see the Ijebu being vibrant in their commercial ventures, to see more Ijebu men educate their children, especially the girl child, and ensure that farming should again be our focus, while artisanship and skills acquisition should again be our focus for the younger generation.

“I want to see a more vibrant Ijebu Ode, where prosperity, development and progress will be our new song. We would continue to thrive as a community.

“Tradition without history does not hold water; we need to first document a lot of our traditional values.

“As we are fast losing grip of what really these traditions are, under the leadership of our revered Awujale of Ijebuland, Kabiyesi Oba (Dr) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, CFR, GCON, a museum has been created to curate some of these traditional values and history, but we need to be fast about this as time waits for no one.

“In terms of our culture, the Ijebu are always on point, we are proud of our dress culture, our food culture, our working culture, our administrative culture and ‘isese.’

The Lapo Ekun elect also stated that there was hunger and impoverishment in the country at the moment, revealing that he would be creative and responsive in order to encourage the people to work harder and bring back prosperity.

“The advocacy will be on hard work and prosperity. We would also encourage individuals; our sons and daughters, with means to teach by way of CSR, how to fish. We will take them back to basics, orientation, handwork and prosperity.”

On how he would engage with other traditional leaders and government officials, Lapo Ekun said that there was an existing platform to engage other traditional leaders.

He emphasised that the structure was so much intact that it was an envy of the traditional councils of other areas, adding that he would continue to foster commendable relationships, contribute his ideas on development and go extra mile to ensure that his decisions impact on the people and their socio economic status.

On his philosophy on leadership, Lapo Ekun said that a good leader is a good listener, and that he must have a good vision to inspire others to follow it.

A university don, Dr Fassy Adetokunboh Yusuff, has advocated adequate recognition for Polytechnic Education in Nigeria, stressing that it offers advanced technical education needed for further technological development of the country.

Yusuf, while delivering the annual lecture of the Ijebu Muslim College Old Students Association, IMCOSA, Ijebu Ode, on Saturday, noted that polytechnic model was hands-on and industry-responsive education that trained students in advanced skills.

According to him, “polytechnics usually offer a more practical, hands-on approach to technical subjects, whereas, universities tend to focus on the empirical, research-based studies.”

Speaking on the theme, “Life After Secondary School Education,” Yusuf, a former commissioner in Ogun State, emphasized the importance of acquiring additional knowledge beyond secondary school education to achieve success and relevance in life.

READ ALSO: EXTRA: #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, By Adesola Ayo-Aderele

He highlighted various means of acquiring additional knowledge to include vocational and crafts education; technical and religious education; polytechnic and professional education, and university education.

He stressed the need for students to develop skills, be adaptable, and have impeccable character to succeed in the complex world.

In his address, the National President of IMCOSA, Otunba Olawale Salami, said the lecture chosen within the context of youth development and empowerment was designed to prepare the SS3 Students of Ijebu Muslim College Ijebu Ode for challenges and opportunities that lay ahead of them after graduating from the school.

He said it was also to enrich the young ones with relevant and important information that they would need before and after graduation from IMC.

He added that it was also to update IMCOSA members who had wards in secondary schools on contemporary issues and information they needed to guide their wards going through their education and deciding on what career to follow.

The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ahmad Ado Bayero, has paid homage to the Awujale and Paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, to felicitate with him on his 90th birthday and 64th coronation anniversary.

The visit, which took place on Wednesday was also meant to strengthen the cordial relationship that has been in existence for several years between the Awujale and the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero.

It further reinforced the enduring ties between two of Nigeria’s most respected traditional institutions and attracted dignitaries from both the Ijebu Traditional Council and the Kano Emirate.

Speaking on the significance of the visit, the Emir said, “I was supposed to be here during the 90th birthday and 64th coronation anniversary but I was out of the country. So, upon my return, I decided to pay homage to my father. I say he is my father because when my late father was alive, he used to refer to him as my brother. So, if he is my father’s brother, then he is my father.”
