FirstBank, West Africa’s premier financial institution and the leading financial inclusion service provider, has announced its strategic sponsorship of the second edition of ChessMasters, Africa’s largest school chess tournament.

The announcement was made at the official press conference of the tournament held on 16 March 2026 at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos.

ChessMasters is an annual chess tournament designed to equip the next generation with critical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership skills.

The competition targets children in primary school aged between 6 and 11 years old.

Organised by Eko Hotels and Suites and KEY Academy , ChessMasters was created to provide thousands of children across Nigeria with opportunities to develop modern educational skills, bringing schools together on a national stage.

Speaking at the press conference, Olayinka Ijabiyi, Acting Group Head, Marketing & Corporate Communications at FirstBank, said, “Our sponsorship of ChessMasters 2026 reflects our commitment to building talents and communities, driving inclusion, and deepening engagement through our First@Sports initiative, a platform that celebrates talent and promotes social impact through sports. With over a century of supporting legacy sports in Nigeria, we are proud of our enduring partnerships – 105 years with the Georgian Cup, 65 years with the Lagos Amateur Golf Championship and 35 years with the Dala Hard Court Tennis Championship.”

Ijabiyi further highlighted how the sponsorship aligns with FirstBank’s sustainability pillars of Education, Health, and Welfare.

“We recognise the potential of chess to help school-age children challenge themselves, think critically, and compete at the highest level, hence we see the tournament as a launch pad for a pan-African movement leveraging chess as a tool for education, empowerment, and leadership development. We are utilising this platform as another avenue to promote social impact and drive positive change in the community.”

Caline Chagoury Moudabar, Director and Co- Founder of ChessMasters and her partner, Damilola Okonkwo of Key Academy, expressed appreciation for FirstBank’s support, noting that the partnership will help scale the impact of ChessMasters and inspire more schools to participate.

“We are happy to welcome FirstBank on board. This collaboration will boost chess development in Nigeria and promote critical thinking among young minds. With support from partners like FirstBank, we are opening the doors of participation to more children and more schools in this year’s edition.”

Prince Adeyinka Adewole, Vice President of the Nigeria Chess Federation, commended the initiative, emphasising its role in nurturing future chess talents.

“Chess connects people, ideas, and opportunities. It teaches children to be analytical, patient, and manage their time and resources effectively. Chess also improves concentration and has been particularly beneficial for children with autism,” he said.

The second edition of ChessMasters will be held on Saturday, 2 May 2026 at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos.

The competition is open to 150 schools across Lagos, with over 700 students expected to participate and vie for a total prize pool of N10 million.

FirstBank’s involvement in the 2026 edition of the tournament reinforces the potential of ChessMasters to become a launch pad for African children, leveraging chess as a tool for education, empowerment, and leadership development.

By BOLAJI ISRAEL

American branding consultant and CEO of Brandstream, Scott Bedbury, said, “In today’s experience-driven marketplace, the brands that endure are those that move beyond products and services to connect with the passions, lifestyles, and emotions of their customers. The most successful businesses don’t just serve — they engage, delight, and become part of life’s memorable moments”.

FirstBank is playing deeply into that truth. Having long established itself as a symbol of resilience, trust, heritage, excellence, and innovation in banking, the 131-year-old institution is taking customer connection to a new dimension — transforming from a financial service provider into a joy-giver that understands culture, family, and celebration.

Every year, FirstBank keeps customers satisfied with seamless banking experiences, then raises the rhythm by the ember months, turning up the festive energy through its DecemberIssaVybe campaign — a season-long fusion of entertainment, rewards, and shared happiness.

From premium access to top-tier concerts and musicals, to theatre nights, comedy shows, and fashion showcases, DecemberIssaVybe keeps customers vibing, grooving, and smiling — proving that for the premier West African bank and a leading financial inclusion service provider, engagement is not a slogan, it’s a lifestyle.

For FirstBank, entertainment has become more than an add-on — it’s an extension of customer experience. Through DecemberIssaVybe, the bank transforms the festive season into a celebration of music, art, theatre, and culture, where customers enjoy premium access to some of the most sought-after shows, concerts, and plays in Nigeria. The initiative connects the brand with the rhythm of its people — the laughter of families at stage plays, the energy of fans at mega concerts, and the joy of togetherness that defines the December spirit.

By curating these experiences, FirstBank positions itself not just as a bank that understands finance, but as one that understands feeling — a brand that celebrates the Nigerian way of life. The campaign has featured exclusive access to headline shows, theatre performances, comedy nights, and lifestyle events that highlight the nation’s vibrant creative scene. Customers not only enjoy the fun; they experience a sense of belonging and appreciation that strengthens their emotional connection with the brand.

DecemberIssaVybe also reflects FirstBank’s growing influence in supporting Nigeria’s creative and entertainment industries — vital sectors that provide jobs, nurture culture, and export the Nigerian story to the world. By sponsoring and amplifying these platforms, the bank fuels a chain of value that extends from the stage to the streets, from creators to consumers. It’s more than seasonal celebration; it’s strategic cultural investment.

Beyond the lights and music, there’s a deeper rhythm to what DecemberIssaVybe represents — connection, loyalty, and legacy. It mirrors FirstBank’s understanding that banking today isn’t only about transactions; it’s about touch points that make life richer. It’s about being present where the customer laughs, loves, and lives. By blending entertainment with appreciation, the bank turns every December into a statement of gratitude — rewarding loyalty, strengthening relationships, and reminding customers that they are at the heart of everything.

As one of the nation’s most enduring institutions, FirstBank continues to evolve with the times while holding firm to its promise of putting customers first. And through DecemberIssaVybe, it gives that promise a new sound — a festive melody of joy, togetherness, and cultural celebration. Because for FirstBank, happiness isn’t just seasonal. It’s part of the brand’s legacy — a rhythm that plays all year long and peaks beautifully every December.

Rewarding Customers Through Entertainment

For FirstBank, DecemberIssaVybe is a deliberate strategy to deepen emotional connections with its customers. Olayinka Ijabiyi, Acting Group Head, Marketing and Corporate Communications, explained that banking today is not only about financial transactions; it’s about creating moments that matter — moments where families, friends, and communities come together to celebrate life and culture; through this initiative, FirstBank is able to reward customers in ways that resonate with them personally — from live concerts and theatre to comedy and lifestyle events.

He noted that the bank’s goal remains to ensure that every Nigerian feels connected, valued, and appreciated – the bank sees the joy, excitement, and energy that DecemberIssaVybe brings, and it’s incredible to witness customers sharing those experiences with friends and family.

Through these initiatives, FirstBank delivers on its promise of rewarding loyalty while keeping customers entertained and engaged. The campaign brings premium access to highly sought-after concerts, plays, musicals, comedy festivals, and fashion showcases, giving customers front-row experiences with Nigeria’s most beloved performers and platforms. Whether it’s a VIP ticket to a Burna Boy or Wizkid concert, a night at Kakadu the Musical, or an exclusive fashion showcase, customers enjoy experiences that are memorable and rare — moments that connect the bank to life’s joyful milestones.

Premium Access, Exclusive Experiences

A core feature of DecemberIssaVybe is the premium access it affords customers. Social media and brand platforms regularly highlight the exclusive tickets, backstage passes, and VIP privileges distributed as part of the campaign. From sold-out concerts and comedy shows to family theatre nights, the initiative ensures that customers feel celebrated in style.

Ijabiyi explained further that FirstBank takes pride in offering experiences that customers would be thrilled to have access to. “DecemberIssaVybe is about bringing people closer to the cultural heartbeat of Nigeria — live music, theatre, comedy, fashion, and lifestyle events — while connecting them directly with the FirstBank brand. It’s our way of making loyalty tangible, memorable, and joyous.”

By combining banking excellence with cultural engagement, FirstBank ensures that its customers don’t just transact; they experience life’s excitement with the bank as a partner in celebration.

Voices of Excited Customers

The annual campaign have generated widespread enthusiasm among customers and social media followers. Excited feedback from Toyin Ojo on facebook illustrates the impact of DecemberIssaVybe: “FirstBank made my December unforgettable! I got VIP access to see my favourite artist live — I still can’t believe it!”

Segun Ibiyemi, another customer shared on X: “I’ve never felt so connected to a brand. DecemberIssaVybe isn’t just about the show; it’s about the memories we made as a family.”

And yet another enthused: “It’s amazing how FirstBank takes banking beyond numbers. They gave me and my friends experiences we’ll remember forever. That’s loyalty rewarded!”

From families laughing together at theatre nights to friends grooving at sold-out concerts, the campaign creates moments that customers cherish and share. The excitement online — from Instagram stories to X (formerly Twitter) posts — amplifies the sense of community and joy that the initiative fosters.

Cultural Impact and Connection

Beyond entertaining, FirstBank’s DecemberIssaVybe has a broader cultural impact. By sponsoring concerts, theatre, comedy, and lifestyle events, the bank fuels the creative economy while providing Nigerians with experiences that connect them to their heritage, friends, and family.

The success of DecemberIssaVybe is measured not only in ticket distributions or sold-out events, but in the smiles, the laughter, and the sense of belonging it creates. FirstBank is not just facilitating transactions but memories. It is giving customers joy, access, and connection in ways that touch their hearts and enrich their experiences during the yuletide season.

By combining entertainment, premium access, and thoughtful engagement, the campaign strengthens FirstBank’s bond with customers and positions the bank as more than a financial institution — it becomes a lifestyle brand that touches lives and creates lasting joy.

A Legacy of Joy and Connection

Through DecemberIssaVybe, FirstBank has turned a seasonal initiative into a cultural phenomenon, blending entertainment, lifestyle, and premium experiences to keep customers rewarded, happy, and connected. In doing so, the bank has shown that loyalty goes beyond accounts and cards — it is about shared memories, emotional connection, and being part of life’s most joyful moments.

For FirstBank, the message is clear: banking is more than numbers; it’s about being part of the moments that make life vibrant. And every December, through DecemberIssaVybe, the bank hits the high notes — keeping customers vibing, grooving, rewarded and deeply connected to the rhythm of joy.

FirstBank, the premier bank in West Africa and a leading financial inclusion service provider, is proud to announce the commencement of its 2025 Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability, CR&S, Week, scheduled to hold from 27 October – 1 November 2025.

Now in its ninth year, the annual event is a reflection of the Bank’s commitment to community empowerment, environmental stewardship, and the advancement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs.

Through the ‘Start Performing Acts of Random Kindness’ (SPARK) initiative, FirstBank continues to build on its legacy of sowing seeds of kindness, with a focus on uplifting communities and reducing environmental impact. During CR&S Week, the Bank mobilises employees across the FirstBank Group, including FirstBank Nigeria, FirstBank UK, FirstBank Gambia, FirstBank Sierra Leone, FirstBank DRC, FirstBank Guinea, FirstBank Ghana, FBNBank Senegal, First Pension, and First Nominees, to dedicate their time and resources to meaningful causes aligned with the Bank’s sustainability strategy.

Commenting on the week-long event, Acting Group Head, Marketing & Corporate Communications at FirstBank, Olayinka Ijabiyi, said, “CR&S Week is a call to action. It is about showing up for humanity, being kind to one another, and proving that even the smallest act can ripple into lasting change. FirstBank believes that kindness is a currency that never devalues, and that is why every year since 2017, staff have gone the extra mile to give back to the communities through its SPARK initiative, while also encouraging people to perform acts of random kindness.”

The Bank plans to plant at least 20,000 trees within the week in partnership with the Nigeria Conservation Foundation, NCF, in the final phase of its support for the Nigeria’s 2060 decarbonisation agenda.

This effort builds on the Bank’s pledge to plant 50,000 trees by 2025, with 31,000 trees successfully planted over the past two years.

Additionally, in line with FirstBank’s commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5, SDG, of women empowerment, the Bank will collaborate with Borno and Katsina States to raise and provide medical interventions (including surgeries and post-care kits) for women living with Vesicovaginal Fistula, VVF.

Throughout the week, FirstBank staff will be inspired to share messages of kindness, fostering a culture of compassion, civility, and empathy across the Bank.

The programme will feature themed webinars centered on the SPARK initiative, as well as school engagements designed to instill the values of generosity and social responsibility in younger generations.

The week will culminate in visits to orphanage homes, internally displaced persons, IDP, camps, and charitable organisations across Nigeria, sub-Saharan Africa, and the UK, demonstrating kindness and empowering those at the bottom of the pyramid.

These initiatives epitomise FirstBank’s care for the environment and humanity, aligning with the Bank’s sustainability strategic pillars and support for the Green Recovery Nigeria.

Since the first edition in 2017, FirstBank’s CR&S Week has spotlighted the Bank’s corporate citizenship interventions driving positive social impact, sustainability, and community engagement.

Over the years, it has evolved into a platform that mobilises stakeholders and non-customers alike across its global network to champion causes that uplift lives, protect the environment, and promote inclusive development.

FirstBank is encouraging and inspiring individuals to go beyond their everyday routines and perform acts of random kindness.

The Lagos Lagoon glistened in shades of blue and gold as electric powerboats sliced through the water, cheered on by an ecstatic crowd that lined Victoria Island’s waterfront from Saturday, 3 October to Sunday, 5 October. For two unforgettable days, Lagos became Africa’s capital of clean energy, glamour, and innovation, all powered by First Bank of Nigeria, the sponsor of the continent’s first-ever E1 Lagos Grand Prix.

From the rhythmic sounds of Afrobeats echoing across the Marina to the sight of sleek, futuristic boats gliding silently on water, the E1 Lagos GP was more than a race, it was a celebration of Lagos’ vibrant spirit and Nigeria’s march towards sustainability.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a goodwill message, hailed the event as a bold statement of intent by Nigeria and Lagos, praising Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, First Bank, and other partners for delivering a world-class spectacle.

“The E1 Powerboat series combines world-class entertainment with clean energy innovation. This championship is not just a thrilling spectacle on water but a commitment to a greener and more sustainable future,” the president had said at the opening ceremony of the great event on Friday, 3 October.

He described Lagos as “a gateway to innovation, technology, and global sporting excellence,” affirming the nation’s readiness to lead Africa’s transition to clean energy.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who led the regatta that opened the event, described the championship as a proud moment for Lagos and a reflection of its global potential.

“E1 Lagos GP is more than a race; it is a celebration of Lagos’ dynamism, the Spirit of Lagos,” the governor said, adding that “It shows our capacity to host world-class events and underscores our commitment to sustainability.”

Crowds thronged the Lagos Lagoon and fan zones, having fun, snapping selfies, and soaking in the festive atmosphere. International sports icons, investors, and fans came from across the world, including former Chelsea and Ivory Coast football legend Didier Drogba, co-owner of Team Drogba Global Africa, who added a touch of celebrity magic to the weekend.

For First Bank of Nigeria, the event was not just about sports, it was about making history. Acting Group Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, Olayinka Ijabiyi, said sponsoring the E1 Lagos GP reflected the bank’s heritage of innovation and renewal.

READ ALSO: 2024/2025 academic year: NELFUND reopens student loan portal

“Innovation, sustainability, excitement, speed, we are a heritage bank that has been around for 131 years, and for every one of those years, we have constantly renewed ourselves,” Ijabiyi said, adding that “When this opportunity came, who else could bring the first E1 GP to Nigeria but First Bank? We are proud to have presented Lagos and Nigeria to the world.”

At the First Bank Pavilion, visitors enjoyed interactive experiences, lifestyle engagements, and product showcases, while music, fashion, and food added a distinctly Lagos flavour. Families and young professionals mingled with entrepreneurs, all celebrating a fusion of technology, culture, and sustainability, hallmarks of the bank’s brand identity.

“This race is a net-zero emitter,” Ijabiyi added. “We are strong on sustaining the environment and supporting a cleaner, greener future. It’s innovation meeting responsibility.”

The E1 partnership also connects with the bank’s #FirstBankDecemberIssaVybe series, an annual celebration of entertainment and lifestyle that lights up Nigeria’s festive season. “December is the Vybe,” Ijabiyi teased. “This is just a taste of what’s to come-fun, fashion, food, and amazing experiences.”

The finale on Sunday was nothing short of electrifying as Team Brazil claimed victory, with pilots Timmy Hansen and Leva Millere-Hagin steering their electric boat to glory, beating Team Blue Rising and Team Drogba to the podium.

As the sun set over the Lagoon, the waterfront transformed into a sea of lights and cheers, a moment that captured the heart of Lagos: energetic, ambitious, and always ready to lead.

With its sponsorship of the E1 Lagos Grand Prix, First Bank once again proved that it is more than a financial institution, it is a lifestyle brand championing innovation, sustainability, and national pride.

In the words of Latoya Johnson, a Lagosian who attended the event: “I grew up knowing First Bank as the reliable one. Seeing them behind something this big makes me proud. They’re not just banking our money, they’re banking our future.”

From clean energy to cultural celebration, from racing boats to smiling faces, the E1 Lagos GP was a powerful reminder that when innovation meets tradition, the result is pure magic.

Hit FM, the leading radio station in Cross Rivers State, and organizers of Calabar Entertainment Conference, CEC, has announced First Bank of Nigeria Limited as official bank partners for the flagship youth engagement programme in the creative sector.
