A civil servant with the Lagos Island local government area, Mrs. Adebisi Ikusawe, has won a brand new GAC Sport Utility Vehicle at the just-concluded National Women’s Conference of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, COWLSO.

This is coming six months after she was involved in an accident that completely damaged her car beyond repair.

In line with the tradition of COWLSO during the annual conference, three lucky participants usually win star prizes, while several others win prizes including deep freezers, flat screen televisions, water dispensers, washing machines, microwave ovens, blenders, toasters, among others.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the conference, Lagos State First Lady and Chairman of COWLSO, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, said the story of Ikusawe was one that elicited a deep emotional reaction, having won the star prize of a brand new car a few months after surviving a serious car accident.

REALS ALSO: S’West governors’ wives in Lagos, applaud COWLSO on project

“If you hear this woman (Ikusawe’s) story, in April 2022, she was involved in a serious accident. The car was a right off. As faith would have it, at the Gala Night at this conference, she got a brand new car,” the First Lady said.

Also, a 74-year-old woman, Alhaja Olushola Oyedele, popularly known as Iya Luku Mushin won a 2-bedroom apartment at LagosHoms, Sangotedo.

An elated Oyedele who has been a politician since 1974 could not hide her excitement when her ticket number for the raffle draw was announced by the state governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The owner of the first ticket number picked for the star prize had apparently gone home as it was announced repeatedly without response, thus paving the way for a new ticket to be picked.

Responding, Oyedele said she was excited to win the star prize having tried for several years.

“I’ve been involved in politics since 1974. I have also been attending this COWLSO Conference for years hoping and praying that I will win one day without begrudging previous winners. I thank God my time has come today,” Oyedele said, just as she commended COWLSO for the transparency with which the raffle draws were conducted.

Also, a retired Permanent Secretary in the Lagos State Civil Service, Mrs. Abiola Liadi won a Turkish return ticket during the raffle draws.

Lagos State First Lady and Chairman of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, COWLSO, Dr Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, on Saturday led an awareness walk on the forthcoming 22nd National Women’s Conference, NWC, of the committee, saying it was time for women to spring forth and stand out.

The conference, with the theme, “Spring Forth, Stand Out,” will be held from 18th to 20th October 2022 at the Convention Centre, Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

She said the theme was specifically aimed at encouraging women to understand the need to stand out and be exceptional in all their endeavours.

“In 2021, we had “Awake” as our theme and this year, our theme is “Spring Forth, Stand Out.” It is a continuation of what we started last year. We want our women to spring forth, wake up from their slumber and now stand out.

READ ALSO: S’West governors’ wives in Lagos, applaud COWLSO on project

“We want women to stand out any where we find ourselves whether you are the breadwinner, whether you are a teacher, whether you are a market woman; whatever you do and wherever you are, you must stand out. Even in adversity, you must be able to stand out and that is what this conference is all about,” she said.

The First Lady, who embarked on the awareness walk with COWLSO members from Odunlami Street, Lagos Island to Lagos House, Marina, seized the opportunity to sensitize residents on the collection of Permanent Voters Card (PVCs), among others, while also paying glowing tribute to the founding mothers of COWLSO.

“As we all know, we have been doing this for the past 22 years. COWLSO was founded by Mrs Obafunmilayo Mobolaji-Johnson, the wife of the First Military Governor of Lagos State. At some point, it was docile but was revived in 1999 by the Distinguished Senator Oluremi Tinubu during the administration of our national leader as Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“Senator Oluremi Tinubu also initiated the National Women’s Conference of COWLSO in 2000 and for the past 22 years, we have been doing this annually. We are creating this awareness so that people can come to the conference to learn, unlearn and relearn new things that are happening and can be beneficial,” Sanwo-Olu said.

On the expected guests, she said Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, would serve as the Mother of the Day and would declare the conference open, while Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State is the Special Guest of Honour at the opening ceremony.

She added that the Special Guest of Honour for the gala night is Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, while the Special Guest of Honour at the closing ceremony is Prof. Babagana Zulum, Governor of Borno State.

The walk commenced at CMS Bookshop, Odunlami Street through Shete-Olu Street, Campbell Street, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Road, Catholic Mission Street, Ganiyu Smith Road, Campbell Street, Brook Street, Broad Street and terminated at State House, Marina.

Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, on Monday renewed the call on the United Nations to fully recognize May 16 as the International Day of the Boy Child in order to deepen initiatives and interventions targeted at promoting the interest, welfare, and wellbeing of the Boy Child globally.

The First Lady spoke at the inaugural Parenting Seminar as part of the Boy Child Initiative of her office held at Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja, with the theme: “Parenting The 21st Century Boy Child: A Pathway To Transformation.”

The seminar for parents is the third leg of the Boy Child Initiative to commemorate the international celebration and it was well attended by stakeholders drawn from various groups including wives of government officials, government functionaries, traditional and community leaders, market associations, religious and professional bodies, security agencies, youth voluntary groups, orphanages, correctional facilities, and people living with disabilities, among others.

According to the First Lady, the seminar was aimed at ensuring that parents have an in-depth understanding of the nitty-gritty of effective approaches to the upbringing of the boy child in order to address the social vices such as rape, drug abuse, cultism, bullying, and others.

Sanwo-Olu said having earlier organised an advocacy walk, formal launch, and a 3-day residential workshop for boys selected from across the state to extensively address topics of interest to boys, her office decided to follow up the interventions with a seminar on how effective parenting can lay the foundation for promoting family values and civic responsibility.

“Our Boy Child Interventions are aimed at making a positive difference. It is gratifying that it is already catching the fancy of the International Community, and I must say we are open to partnerships to scale up our programmes to support the boy child and secure their future.

“Parents have a lot to do to address the plight of the boy child. The issue of the boy child is a burning one that parents must pay special attention to because if we don’t, the boy child is at risk.

“As parents, for instance, we need to desist from exerting pressure on our boys; we need to kick out drug abuse; we just have to focus on all issues affecting the boy child,” the First Lady said.

In all, there were three lectures on the Importance of sex education in birthing a sexual and gender-based violence-free society; mental health issues in children: early signs and preventive measures; and parenting: our civic responsibility and its overall impact on nation-building, while there was a panel session on parenting the boy child in the 21st century: the journey, challenges, and solutions, facilitated by subject-matter experts including the Chief Operations Officer of Cece Year Foundation, Mrs. Bisi Ajayi-Kayode; Consultant Neuropsychiatrist, Dr. Olusegun Ogunnubi; and Founder of International Parent Network, Mrs. Wendy Ologe.

The panel session was moderated by the Founder of Boy Child Transformation Centre, Mrs. Nkiru Oguadinma, while panelists included Hon Justice Jumoke Pedro of the Lagos State High Court; Dr. Dokun Adedeji of the Christ Against Drug Abuse Ministry (CADAM); DCP Fayoade Adegoke of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti; Controller Adewale Adebisi, Controller of Corrections, Nigerian Correctional Service, Lagos State Command; Consultant General Surgeon and Imam, Dr. Sayeid Ahmad; and Mrs. Ologe.

They all harped on the need for parents to give quality time to their children and improve the communication line in the family, while also leading by example to teach boys good values, especially the need to respect the rights of others.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated his wife and First Lady of the State, Dr. (Mrs) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, on her 55th birthday.

Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, a medical doctor by profession, clocks 55 years today, Saturday January 8, 2022.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Gboyega Akosile, on Saturday, described his wife as a courageous, amiable and kind-hearted and also, his strong pillar of support.

He said the First Lady, a thoroughbred medical practitioner who represents the league of the brightest minds and pride of the profession, had touched the lives of millions of Nigerians and Lagosians, first as a medical practitioner and currently as First Lady of Lagos, since his assumption of office on May 29, 2019.

“On behalf of the good people of Lagos State, I heartily congratulate my beloved wife, friend and reliable partner of many years, on the occasion of her 55th birthday.

“Attaining the age of 55 years in grace, elegance and good health is worth celebrating because of her remarkable contributions to the family, medical profession, Lagos State and humanity,” the governor said.

Sanwo-Olu stressed further that over the years, his wife and best friend had contributed immensely to the health sector, especially as a medical practitioner in Lagos State Civil Service.

He said: “You served Lagos State Government passionately for over 25 years, climbing the ladder to become the Chief Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer at Harvey Road Comprehensive Health Centre in Yaba and later at the General Hospital, Somolu.

“You are one of my back bones and great supporters during the electioneering that brought me into office on May 29, 2019 as the 15th Governor of Lagos State. You contributed and participated in the Health Mission of our campaign train that transversed all the nooks and crannies of the state, especially the grassroots and riverine communities to offer free medical services to millions of Lagosians, particularly the needy and the downtrodden, who couldn’t afford to pay for such health services.

“Since you became the First Lady of Lagos, you have shown passion and commitment to issues relating to health, women and the girl child. And as women and children advocate, you have been vocal in your campaign against sexual and gender-based violence, especially on issues affecting the younger generations. As the chairman of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), you have also provided leadership for women to support their husbands in public offices.

“Ibijoke, you are a woman I will continue to cherish and love because of your positive impact in my life, our children, our immediate and extended families and Lagos State. You are a good, caring and loving wife, a compassionate and committed mother to our children.

“On this occasion of your 55th birthday, I pray that God will continue to be with you, grant you good health to enable you render more service to our beloved dear state, the medical profession and humanity.”

The vehicle presentation was the highpoint of the commemoration of the global 16 days of activism against SGBV, as spearheaded in the state by the Office of the First Lady.

The governor commended all the stakeholders, partners, and donors, saying the feat clearly confirmed that a lot could be achieved working together.

“I am happy with all of our partners, the NGOs, the various offices, and the judiciary that are doing great things. What this means is that just keep doing what you are doing, somebody somewhere is watching, and at the appropriate time, you will be encouraged and we all need to encourage ourselves. I am sure next year, others who are also raising up the bar and they are best in class at what they do will be encouraged.

“On behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, I want to thank all of you for what you are doing. I want to thank my wife, the First Lady; the wife of my brother the Deputy Governor; everybody in the Office of First Lady, and all stakeholders that have put this together.

“What this means is that next year, we should do a lot better, we should have a lot more partners, we should have a lot more intervention, we should indeed be able to say that indeed these are the things we have done and we are on the right path,” he said.

Earlier, the First Lady said a lot had been done to scale up the fight against SGBV, pointing out that it was gratifying that vehicles were being presented to further ramp up the capacities of relevant agencies to deal decisively with the menace.

“A lot has been done with regards to the 16 days of activism. We had our Community Sensitization on the 29th of November, followed by School Sensitization. We also took part in the Interfaith parley where we had the opportunity to talk to religious leaders (Christian and Muslim).

“In between, I went to Abuja to attend the Second Annual Conference of Nigeria Governors’ Wives Forum against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, and we also had the opportunity of meeting the National Union of Road Transport Workers to sensitize them on the dangers and position of the law on SGBV.

“We are presenting six vehicles today making a total of nine vehicles we have presented to support the fight against SGBV. Recall that we had earlier presented three to the Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, DSVRT, of the Ministry of Justice; Child Protection Unit of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development; and the Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, Lagos. For us, we will not relent in our fight against the SGBV,” she said.

Besides the vehicles, rape kits were also donated to the Ministry of Health to help in the treatment of rape survivors.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, commended the First Lady for her passion and genuine commitment and consistency displayed to the cause against SGBV, assuring that the vehicles and the rape kits would be deployed for the intended purpose.

The donors are the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, LSSTF, and Lagos State Gaming and Lotteries Authority, while the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency, LASAA, supported the 16 days of activism campaign with adverts on billboards and electronic media.

Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday urged members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, to key into the fight against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, SGBV, and become ambassadors of the advocacy to stamp the menace out of the society.

She spoke at the state headquarters of NURTW located in the Oko-Oba area of Agege during a sensitisation visit organised by her office for over 1,000 transport union workers in line with the ongoing global 16 days of activism against SGBV.

“We have been moving across the state with this advocacy. This time around we decided that we are coming to meet our brothers and sisters of the NURTW here. This is the first time I am coming here and I am happy to be with you. We are reminding everyone that we should not be involved in domestic violence and sexual violence.

“These are things that are wrong and we should not take them lightly. We must kick these crimes out of Lagos State. When a woman says no, her no should mean no and it must be respected. When you see something, you must say something and do something. You all must be our ambassadors against the menace,” she said.

The First Lady said like all other professions, it was unlikely to have one or two bad eggs among transport workers, adding that others must work to expose and shame such members so that they did not continue to soil the collective image of the transport union.

She said the state government had enacted a law that supported the Sex Offenders Register to name and shame perpetrators of sexual crimes, just as she spoke against encouraging intake of all sorts of sachet alcoholic beverages and mixtures which could trigger mental health and SGBV issues.

She said in addition to the earlier unveiling of signposts against SGBV in some local government areas, efforts would soon be made to declare car parks and bus parks as Rape Free Zones, among other initiatives to stamp out the menace.

Also speaking, the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat urged parents to wake up and be vigilant in protecting their children against sexual predators, saying it had been observed that abuse of minors had become rampant.

In his welcome remarks, the state chairman of NURTW, Alhaji Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, commended the First Lady for the advocacy against SGBV, saying members of the union were happy to receive her.

He said it was gratifying to note that hooliganism and the sale of alcohol had now become history in bus parks controlled by the NURTW, adding that no efforts would be spared to sustain peaceful conduct by members of the union.

“Personally, I have never tasted alcohol in my life. I have never smoked cigarettes as well. I will never be in a position to encourage drug abuse and sexual abuse by our members.

“It is also worthy to note that the issue of hooliganism especially during the change of leadership in the parks is now a thing of the past in our union. We also have children who we are praying to God to be successful in life. Therefore, we will continue to speak out against acts of violence in any form,” Akinsanya said.

At the advocacy visit, an expert on SGBV matters and a retired director in the Lagos State Ministry of Health, Mrs. Ibudunni Alakija-Ladapo, anchored a special lecture on SGBV, while various information materials were distributed to members of the NURTW who were drawn from across the state.

Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, on Monday commiserated with the parents of the 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Lekki in Lagos, Sylvester Oromoni, who died last week, describing it as heartbreaking.

Already, the state government has sealed off the college following the gruesome death of Oromoni, who was a boarding student of the college.

Speaking during an advocacy visit to some schools in furtherance of the ongoing 16 days of activism against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, the First Lady described the incident at Dowen College as unfortunate, saying never again should it reoccur in the state.

“I am aware that the Lagos State Government is at the moment investigating the incident and honestly it is something we are not very happy about. It’s a big slap on the face of the education sector, the community, and Lagos State as a whole.

“It is a case that is being investigated and for the parents and everybody involved, honestly, we commiserate with them and send our condolences.

“As I said, the case is being investigated and I will not be able to say much on it at the moment,” Sanwo-Olu said.

She said the advocacy visit to schools was aimed at catching the students young and enlightening them on the need to work against all forms of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence.

“As we all know, the world is commemorating the 16 days of activism against SGBV. It commences on November 25 and it will end on December 10 which is Human Rights Day. The programme is being championed globally by United Nations and our theme this year is ‘Orange The World: End Violence Against Women Now.’

“The advocacy is also being championed by the Nigeria Governors’ Wives Forum, NGOs and so many other private individuals and organisations to ensure that there is zero tolerance to gender-based violence all over Nigeria and Lagos in particular,” she said.

She explained that the visit to the respective schools was the third leg of the advocacy efforts, saying that a similar enlightenment programme had been held for the community groups and religious leaders by her office.

“For the Office of the Lagos State First Lady, we decided that our advocacy is to do community sensitisation at the grassroots level which we did on November 29 and then we followed it up with sensitisation visit to our religious leaders in our communities. This is the third way of our advocacy, going into the schools.

“We realised that it is good to catch them young and so when we plant this seed in the children, it will gradually germinate and it helps us to ensure that our students have the correct mindset and understand why these vices exist and what the law says about the vices in the country.

“I am happy with the response we are getting. The students are interested in knowing about Sexual and Gender-Based Violence and joining the train to stamp it out in our state. We have distributed some resource materials that will help the teachers, the students, and the parents associations in the respective schools to know more and work against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in our communities,” she said.

The schools visited include Dolphin Senior High School and Dolphin Junior High School, Tapa, Lagos Island under Education District Three; as well as Aje Comprehensive Junior High School and Aje Comprehensive Senior High School, Sabo-Yaba, Lagos under Education District Four.

The First Lady donated laptops, industrial cooking gas, and other educational materials to each of the schools, just as she assured that more schools and other critical organisations would be visited.

Responding on behalf of the students, Permanent Secretary, Education District III, Dr. Olufolayimika Abiose-Ayandele commended the First Lady for her interest and passion for the welfare and safety of students in the state.

She said the advocacy visit to schools on SGBV by the First Lady was another clear testament to her commitment to ending the menace of rape, defilement, and all forms of sexual abuse in the state.

The event was also attended by representatives of the Parents Forum, Old Students Associations, Community Leaders, and stakeholders in the education sector, while there was a special SGBV Talk by Programme Manager of Youth Empowerment Foundation, Mrs. Morenike Omiagboje; and Programme Manager of Women Consortium of Nigeria, WOCON, Mrs Atinuke Ogunbayo.

Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, on Saturday led members of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, COWLSO, on an awareness walk against domestic violence, with a call on women to speak up in defence of other women.

The awareness walk, held on the major streets of Alausa, Ikeja, is part of activities heralding the forthcoming National Women’s Conference, NWC, of COWLSO scheduled to hold from October 26 to 28, 2021 at the Convention Centre, Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

During the walk, COWLSO members displayed placards of various inscriptions such as “Shun gender-based discriminations; Use your words, not your fist; Blame the rapist, not the victim; The Lagos woman is an awake woman; Ji, Ma Sun; Security is everyone’s business, be vigilant; Speak up, seek help, stay safe; It should not hurt to be a child. End Child Abuse; Say no to drug addiction; We say no to terrorism, kidnapping, banditry; stop rape; We have no other country, let’s defend the country we have,” among others.

Speaking in an interview during the walk, the First Lady said it was about time for every woman to look out for the welfare of other women and inspire others.

“The essence of this walk is like a clarion call for all women all over Nigeria. The theme of COWLSO NWC this year is Awake. It is a call for all women so that they can wake up; wake up to be a voice to the voiceless; to ensure that the economy moves forward; to not think that they don’t have a role to play.

“Every woman, whether you are a housewife, whether you are a professional, whether you are a career woman, whether you are a student and so on, we all have a role to play. So, it is about time we are awake from our slumber; we lift each other up; we inspire other women. This is the essence of what we are doing,” she said.

She added that the walk also aligned with the theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl Child celebration, which was commemorated on October 11.

“The theme for the International Day of the girl child has to do with digital awareness and so for our women, whether you are a market woman or not, this is the time we must all become tech-savvy; this is the time we should align with the ‘Z generation’; this is the time we need to speak up; this is the time for every woman whatever you are doing, wherever you are, you need to lend your voice and help to inspire other women out there,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, COWLSO, on Tuesday unveiled plans to invest massively to boost education across the state, especially in the rural areas and underserved communities.

COWLSO chairman and First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, said that at a press conference held at Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja to announce activities lined up for the 21st National Women’s Conference of the Committee which is scheduled to hold between 26th and 28th October 2021 at The Convention Centre, Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu, who addressed the media alongside other top COWLSO officials and members of the Conference Planning Committee, said the proceeds realised from the conference would be channeled to undertake school projects and procure equipment both for students in rural areas and children with special needs.

“This year by the grace of God, COWLSO will be going on the educational route. All proceeds from this conference will be channeled towards things that will help our children. In conjunction with the Ministry of Education, we will partner to have a school project, and not only that, we will ensure that our children have the best equipment to learn.

“We will also be looking at ensuring that children with special needs have the necessary equipment to learn. Education is the bedrock of society and it is very important that we catch them young. And so, that is one of the reasons we don’t joke with the National Women’s Conference. It has been on for the past 20 years and this year, we are having the 21st edition,” she said.

Sanwo-Olu assured that all was now set for the hybrid conference, and that the theme for this year is: “Awake!”

“The venue can conveniently accommodate 3000 participants but in view of the new realities, we will be having about 1,000 participants physically, while about 6,000 will join us virtually.

“In 2019, our theme was: “Unlearn, Learn and Relearn: 21st Century Women’s T.H.E.M.E.S Perspectives/Approach.” In 2020, we discussed “Exploring the Possibilities in a New World”. This year, our theme is “Awake!”

“We want our women to awake and be in tune with modern realities; we want participants to be equipped with the skills and expertise to make a positive difference and be solutions to the myriad of challenges confronting us as a state and nation. This is the essence of the theme this year.

“The theme of the Conference and Sub-themes will be examined by subject-matter experts who are seasoned and accomplished professionals in various spheres of life. They have been carefully selected to thoroughly dissect the topics,” she explained.

She also said in line with the tradition, some women who have distinguished themselves and made a positive impact would be honoured as inspirational women of the year, while for the first time; there would also be the inspirational youths of the year category.

She added that there would be COWLSO Virtual and Physical Markets through which participants would have the opportunity to visit and buy various items at a greatly reduced price from the accredited vendors, as well as free legal clinics and medical care.

On other activities, Sanwo-Olu said: “This year, our Gala Night will return and it promises to be a bumper package mixed with a potpourri of entertainment and raffle draws that will bring about exciting prizes for lucky participants.

“As part of the pre-Conference preparations, last week, we had a fellowship and prayer service both at the Chapel and Mosque at Lagos House, Ikeja. On Saturday, 16th October 2021, we shall embark on an Awareness Walk, with the theme: “Awake! Stop the Violence!”

Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Muhammadu Buhari is scheduled to declare the conference open, while Ondo State Governor, Arakunri Rotimi Akeredolu, is to serve as the Special Guest of Honour at the opening ceremony, with Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, serving as the Special Guest of Honour at the closing ceremony.

Also speaking, Deputy COWLSO chairman, and wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, commended the quality of vision and leadership provided by the First Lady, saying the purposeful initiatives had translated into welfare and socio-economic empowerment of women, the boy child, girl child, as well as the vulnerable in the state.

In her opening remarks, chairperson of NWC Planning Committee, Mrs Nkem Sofela, said in the last couple of months, the members of the committee had worked assiduously to firm up all necessary arrangements to ensure the huge success of the 21st COWLSO NWC, assuring that the stage was now set.

At the end of the press conference, COWLSO members led by the First Lady also embarked on an awareness walk in Alausa, Ikeja.
