Speaking after the Eid-el-Kabir prayer at the Dodan Barracks prayer ground in Ikoyi on Wednesday where he joined President Bola Tinubu for the Eid Prayer, Dr Hamzat urged citizens to remain tolerant and considerate towards one another.

He noted that peace and unity were essential for sustainable development and social stability.

“We must be patient with each other, obedient to the rule of law, and fear God. To fear God means you do not kill another human being, and you do not hurt another human being. Therefore, we must live in peace and harmony,” he said.

The deputy governor further emphasised the need for residents to uphold values that promote understanding, compassion, and communal living, particularly during periods of religious celebration.

He also charged parents and guardians to take deliberate responsibility for raising children with strong moral values, compassion, and a sense of responsibility towards others.

He emphasised that the lessons of the season went beyond celebration and should inspire families to nurture children who were selfless, respectful, and mindful of the impact of their actions on their families and society at large.

“Our children should be taught to consider how their conduct reflects on their family name, friendships, and the wider community. Parents and guardians, therefore, play a vital role in building a peaceful society by instilling values of love, empathy, and obedience to lawful authority in the younger generation,” he said.

Hamzat added that the decline of peace and compassion in society had contributed to insecurity and violence, expressing hope and prayers that Nigerians would collectively reject hatred and embrace the spirit of unity and peaceful coexistence.

Earlier in his sermon, the Chief Imam of Lagos, Sheikh Sulaimon Oluwatoyin Abou-Nolla, urged Nigeria, especially Muslims, to shun all acts of indiscipline, violence, and terrorism in the country to ensure a peaceful presence, progress, and development in the nation.

He noted that the essence of Islam is love, compassion, and peaceful coexistence, admonishing citizens to be more passionate about the development of their country and states, highlighting that there is violence everywhere in the country and that there is a need for all to be passionate about the betterment of everyone.

Abou-Nolla said the essence of Eid-el-Kabir is sacrifice, citing the sacrifices of leaders such as MKO Abiola and Pa Obafemi Awolowo, among other heroes of the past, whose integrity was built on national unity, selflessness, and commitment to humanity.

“We must ensure that the struggles of our heroes of the past never go in vain. It is essential for us to follow their footsteps in ensuring that our great nation continues to grow in leaps and bounds. It is also important to note that our unity as a nation is supposed to supersede,” he advised.

Sanwo-Olu issued the congratulatory message in a statement released on Friday morning following the declaration of Hamzat as winner of the direct primary election that was held across the state on Thursday.

The governor stated that the huge numbers of party faithful that thronged different polling centres was a reflection of the confidence reposed in Hamzat to consolidate the audacious and transformative leadership of the current administration.

Sanwo-Olu expressed gratitude to all members of the party in Lagos for their show of love, loyalty and solidarity with the leadership and conducting themselves in orderly manner since the start of the primary election process.

The governor charged members not to relent on their efforts, noting that there was more to be done in the run up to the general elections next year.

“On behalf of my family, I congratulate Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat on his emergence as the standard bearer of our great party, the All Progressives Congress, in next year’s gubernatorial election in Lagos. It is my belief that your personal vision for the continuous growth and development of our State will be for the benefit of all,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Sanwo-Olu, who arrived at the polling venue at St. Stephens School, Lagos Island, in company of his wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, at 11:44 a.m., said the direct primary process allowed party members at the ward level to freely participate in the emergence of the party’s governorship candidate.

Speaking after casting his vote, Sanwo-Olu openly declared support for his deputy, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat and expressed confidence that he would emerge as the party’s flag bearer and eventually win the governorship election during the 2027 gubernatorial polls.

He also commended the party members for turning out en masse to support Hamzat, who is the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Lagos State for the 2027 gubernatorial elections.

The governor commended party officials from Abuja and the APC leadership for conducting the exercise peacefully and transparently.

He said the electoral officials and party representatives were on the ground to ensure a credible exercise, noting the impressive turnout of party faithful at the ward.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the atmosphere at the venue was calm and family-like despite the large crowd that gathered before noon to participate in the exercise.

Also speaking at the venue, the chairman of the Lagos Island East Local Council Development Area, Hon. Alade Folawiyo, described the turnout of APC members for the governorship primary as massive.

The council boss expressed confidence that Hamzat would consolidate the achievements of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration if elected as the next governor of Lagos State.

He said the incumbent deputy governor possessed adequate experience and understanding of Lagos governance, adding that continuity in leadership would sustain ongoing infrastructural development and security improvements across the state.

The event was attended by political leaders, traditional rulers, and party members, who, in their thousands, welcomed the entourage led by the Secretary of the Governance Advisory Council, GAC, Alhaji Mutiu Are.

Are was accompanied by GAC members and APC leaders, which included Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, Ogboni Fouad Oki, Alhaji Bode Oyedele, and Dr. Adekunle Olayinka.

Speaking on behalf of Hamzat, who was unavoidably absent, Senator Obanikoro thanked the people for their support for the party and Hamzat, who has been adopted as the APC consensus candidate.

He specifically thanked other governorship aspirants, particularly Mr.Samuel Ajose, who is from Badagry Division for stepping down for Hamzat.

“By obeying the leadership of the party, Ajose has demonstrated the ‘Omoluabi ethos’, by the uncanny humility, loyalty and respect for our party, especially the party leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Our brother, we appreciate you,” he said.

Announcing the donation of boats and life jackets to schools in Badagry, Obanikoro said the initiative was borne out of Hamzat’s desire for the safety of school children in the area, many who used waterways to their respective schools.

The items provided include two boats and 100 life jackets.

Speaking earlier, the chairman of Badagry Local Government Area, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, commended the APC leaders for supporting the party.

“I want to assure you that you will not regret your support for APC. Our traditional fathers and youths have all demonstrated total commitment to this project, and I am assuring you that you will not regret it,” Hunpe said.

The President, whose plane touched down around 7:12 pm at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, was received by the governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Deputy Governor Femi Hamzat; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, along with other government functionaries.

Tinubu, while in France, met with global investors, emphasising transparency and fiscal discipline and explaining the rationale for the swift implementation of the bold economic reforms his administration has instituted.

He also participated in the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, co-hosted by President Emmanuel Macron of France and President William Ruto.

At the event, President Tinubu called for a reform of global financial architecture and a stronger economic integration that prioritises Africa’s growth and prosperity.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s potential in the blue economy as one of the cornerstones of Africa’s development, with a commitment to share Nigeria’s maritime intelligence infrastructure with willing Gulf of Guinea states.

While in Nairobi, the president also had a bilateral meeting with his Madagascan counterpart, Michael Randrianirina.

In Kigali, Rwanda, President Tinubu joined other African leaders, investors, and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of global and African companies at the Africa CEO Forum to chart practical ways to accelerate the continent’s economic transformation through shared scale, regional integration, and increased cross-border investments.

He also held a bilateral meeting with the Rwandan leader and host, Paul Kagame.

He met with delegations from multilateral and multinational companies, including the International Finance Corporation, IFC, APM Terminals, and the Winme Group, with notable favourable outcomes.

President Tinubu also featured in panels and discussions that highlighted, among other things, the thrust of his administration’s economic reform programmes.

While in Lagos, the president will participate in the All Progressives Congress primary elections, starting on Saturday.

He had earlier, in a statement to party faithful, called on all participants in the primaries to “keep the peace and be ready to play as sportsmen and women in the overall interest of the party and our country.”

The Sector Commander, Lagos, Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, made the announcement in a statement on Tuesday.

Hamzat said the date was rescheduled from 12:00 midnight of Tuesday, May 11 to May 19.

Hamzat said the decision was reached during a strategic meeting where implementation modalities and public safety considerations were jointly reviewed between FRSC and the Federal Controller of Works, Mr Olufemi Dare.

“I wish to inform the motoring public of the impending temporary closure of the Eko Bridge to facilitate rehabilitation works on the UBA–Apongbon–Ijora corridor.

“After due consideration of operational and public safety factors, the planned closure, which was earlier proposed to take effect at 12.00 midnight on Tuesday, May 11, has been rescheduled and will now commence on Tuesday, May 19, from 12.00 midnight.

“Motorists are advised to make use of UBA – Outer Marina – Third Mainland Bridge – Elegbeta, and other adjoining corridors during the period of the closure,” he said.

Hamzat urged all road users to exercise patience, adhere strictly to traffic laws, and comply with diversion signs that would be put in place.

He added that to ensure minimal disruption and maintain order, FRSC personnel, in collaboration with other traffic management agencies, would be deployed strategically across affected routes to ensure smooth traffic flow and public safety.

“Members of the public are further encouraged to plan their journeys ahead, obey all traffic instructions, and avoid reckless driving within and around diversion points.

“The FRSC appreciates the cooperation of all road users as efforts are made to improve road infrastructure and ensure safer, more efficient travel across Lagos State,” he said.

Speaking after the screening process held in Abuja on Saturday, Hamzat, who is the consensus candidate of APC in Lagos, stated that the committee carefully reviewed all documents submitted and sought clarifications in areas relating to his public service record and professional experience.

Hamzat, who expressed satisfaction with the screening exercise, described the process as thorough, transparent, and in line with the democratic ideals of the party.

“The screening was designed to verify the credentials, records, and experiences submitted by aspirants seeking to fly the APC flag. The essence of the screening is to ensure that everything submitted is accurate and verifiable. We submitted all required documents, and the committee asked questions based on the information provided. It is basically to confirm that what you wrote is truly reflective of your experience and service,” he said.

Hamzat further explained that members of the committee asked for clarification on some areas and wanted more insight into the roles he had played in government over the years.

He therefore expressed confidence in the APC primary process and reaffirmed his commitment to the continued growth, development, and prosperity of Lagos State.

“I am very comfortable with my party and confident in the democratic process. Ultimately, the decision rests with party members and the people. Our responsibility is to continue offering our best in service to the state and the country,” he said.

Hamzat, who has been endorsed by President Bola Tinubu, reiterated his belief in the capacity of Lagos State to continue leading as a model of innovation, governance, and development in Nigeria, stressing that leadership must remain focused on delivering meaningful impact to citizens.

He described governance as a sacred stewardship, noting that “It is for this reason that I have, throughout my service to Lagos State, sought to govern with the consciousness that public office is a stewardship that will be examined both in time and in eternity.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was accompanied by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, spoke at the official opening of the second session of the 36th Synod of the Diocese of Lagos, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), held at Our Saviour’s Church, Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, on Monday.

Speaking on the theme of the synod, “The Doctrine of Salvation (Soteriology) and the Doctrine of End-Time (Eschatology): Their Relevance and Our Response to Them Today”, Governor Sanwo-Olu said it is one of the most profound and timely subjects upon which the Church can deliberate in this season of Nigeria’s national journey.

He said: “In a country where many of our citizens are wrestling with anxiety about the future, where the global economy is uncertain, and where the cost of living continues to test the resolve of even the strongest families, the message of salvation and the assurance of the blessed hope of Christ’s return are not abstract doctrines. They are bread for the hungry soul. They are the lamp by which a weary nation finds her feet.

“Soteriology reminds us that we are saved, not by our works, lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:8-9), but by the grace and finished work of our Lord Jesus Christ. Eschatology reminds us that this present age is passing and that we shall all stand before the judgement seat of Christ to give account of our stewardship (2 Corinthians 5:10).

“Salvation is therefore not an escape from the world; it is a posture in the world. It teaches us to live soberly in our personal lives, righteously in our dealings with others, and godly in our relationship with our Maker — even as we await His glorious appearance.

“This, in my humble understanding, is the foundation of every genuine reform, every honest budget, every transparent contract, and every life of public service. Without that anchor, leadership becomes a private enterprise; however, with it, leadership becomes a sacred trust.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu congratulated the Diocesan Bishop, The Rt. Revd. Dr. Ifedola Okupevi, on the Synod and thanked him for the consistent prayers, counsel, and pastoral guidance he and the Church have extended to his administration since the day he assumed office.

The governor also spoke passionately to the synod delegates and visitors, which comprised bishops, priests and members of the laity, about his administration’s giant strides in Lagos through the THEMES Plus Agenda – Traffic Management and Transportation; Health and Environment; Education and Technology; Making Lagos a 21st Century Economy; Entertainment and Tourism; and Security and Governance, with the “Plus” representing sustainability, social inclusion and the welfare of every Lagosian.

He said the “Akran of Badagry was a constant, an unshakeable figure of unity, whose palace was always open to his people and whose voice was always measured, always just.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu spoke on Saturday during the funeral outing thanksgiving service held in honour of the Akran of Badagry, De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, at Freeman Memorial Methodist Cathedral, Badagry.

The service was attended by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat; the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Mrs. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin; members of the State Executive Council; serving and former public office holders; politicians; religious and traditional leaders; deceased family members, security personnel and Badagry sons and daughters.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, after the service, also performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I Cultural Park in Badagry.

The governor said the revered traditional ruler left this world with a name that would endure, a name synonymous with peace, with dignity, and with the timeless heritage of the Badagry Kingdom.

He said: “To the good people of Badagry, I say this: your Kabiyesi lived a life worthy of celebration. He was a teacher, a journalist, a king, a statesman, a father, and a guardian of one of the most storied kingdoms in Nigeria’s history. He gave you forty-eight years of peace. He gave the world a record of your heritage. He gave God a life of service.

“Do not let grief consume what he built. The best tribute you can offer the Akran of Badagry is to continue the work, to preserve the monuments, uphold the traditions, welcome the world to witness Badagry’s history, and raise your children to know the covenant of this ancient land.

“Throughout my time as Governor of Lagos State, I was privileged to witness firsthand the steady, principled presence of the Akran in our Council of Obas and Chiefs. He was not a man who spoke often, but when he spoke, the room listened. His was the wisdom of long years and long service, patient, generous, and incorruptible.

“To the Royal Family of the Badagry Kingdom, to the sons and daughters, the chiefs, the palace council, and the extended royal household, I bring the condolences of the Lagos State Government and of the entire people of Lagos. We grieve with you. We know that no words can fill the space left by the departure of a father, a patriarch, and a king. But we also know that the surest way to honour a great man is to carry his values forward.”

Speaking about the virtues of the departed monarch, Governor Sanwo-Olu said De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I was a truly remarkable man, a man whose life was not merely lived but consecrated to the service of his people, his kingdom, and his God.

He said the monarch championed the preservation of Badagry’s historical sites, promoted its cultural festivals nationally and internationally, and ensured that the town’s heritage was not swallowed by the march of time and modernity.

“We celebrate a life that spanned nearly nine decades of extraordinary witness. We celebrate a reign of forty-eight years, the longest of any traditional ruler in Lagos State’s modern history. And above all, we celebrate a man whose love for his people was the compass by which he charted every decision.

“The people of Badagry often said of him, ‘We have not lost a king; we have lost a father.’ That is the highest compliment that can be paid to any leader, that his people feel not the distance of a crown but the warmth of a parent’s care.”

In his sermon, the Prelate Emeritus of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence, Dr. Sunday Ola Makinde, said the De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I was hospitable and loved his people with passion.

He said the life of the departed monarch taught everyone that life is mortal, adding that the traditional ruler served God till his death.

Bishop Makinde praised the Governor Sanwo-Olu administration’s giant strides in Lagos, particularly the Blue and Red line rail and the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

He also implored President Bola Tinubu to ignore the critics of the approved Badagry-Sokoto Expressway.

He said the project was laudable and it should be encouraged to see the light of the day.

Speaking on “How are you preparing for your eternity?” Bishop Makinde implored people to live a fulfilled life, noting that “this life is a journey, and people’s perception will form their legacy.”
