The world of music has honoured a giant: Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Fela was more than a musician. He was a fearless voice of the people, a philosopher of freedom, and a revolutionary force whose music confronted injustice and reshaped global sound.

In Yoruba mythology, he has transcended to a higher plane as an Orisa. He is now eternal.

His courage, creativity, and conviction defined a generation and continue to inspire the world. In Yoruba mythology, he has transcended to a higher plane as an Orisa. He is now eternal.

Fela Kuti has blazed the trail with the Recording Academy of America’s Lifetime Achievement Award, becoming the first African to receive this honour, though posthumously. The award is an affirmation of his enduring global influence and the foundational role he has played in the evolution and impact of Africa on modern music.

He defined Afrobeat, and you can hear and see his influence in generations of Nigerian musicians and in Afrobeats and beyond.

Fela lives.

Billie Eilish’s contribution to the Barbie film soundtrack, What Was I Made For?, has won one of the top prices at the Grammy Awards, song of the year.

The track underscores one of the most emotional moments in the hit movie, as the doll questions her reality.

It also won the Grammy for best song written for visual media at Sunday’s ceremony in Los Angeles.

The other winners included SZA, Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift, who used her speech to announce a new album.

Swift could make history later if she scoops her fourth best album award.

She is currently tied on three wins with Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon and Frank Sinatra.

Eilish beat Swift and other stars including SZA, Cyrus and Olivia Rodrigo to the prize for song of the year, which recognises songwriters.

“Damn, that’s stupid guys,” she remarked to the crowd as she accepted the award with her brother and co-writer Finneas.

“Everybody in this category – that was a crazy list of incredible people, incredible artists, incredible music. I feel crazy right now.”

The Barbie album, which was put together by producer Mark Ronson, also picked up the award for best compilation soundtrack for visual media.

Dua Lipa opened the ceremony with an athletic medley of her songs including her contribution to the Barbie album, Dance the Night, which was also up for song of the year.

R&B star SZA is the show’s leading nominee with nine nods.

For her performance, the singer staged a recreation of the Crazy 88 fight scene from Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill to accompany her song of the same name.

She was joined by a phalanx of sword-wielding female dancers who swiftly dispatched hordes of men in suits – a reference to her song’s comical tale of killing her ex.

The first award of the night went to Miley Cyrus, who picked up best pop vocal performance for her song Flowers.

It was the star’s first Grammy, a fact she noted in her acceptance speech, telling the story of a boy whose futile attempts to catch a butterfly ended when he stopped swinging around a net and stayed still.

“And right when he did is when the butterfly came and landed right on the tip of his nose. And this song, Flowers, is my butterfly,” she said.

Billed as “music’s biggest night”, the Grammys are the industry’s most prestigious awards.

Rodrigo, Eilish, Burna Boy and Travis Scott were also among the performers, with stars like Swift, Beyoncé and Doja Cat in the audience.

But rare appearances by two music legends eclipsed the younger stars.

Tracy Chapman’s hit Fast Car was rejuvenated last year when country star Luke Combs covered it.

Tracy Chapman has only performed in public a handful of times since going into semi-retirement in 2009, but she joined country singer Luke Combs, who had a smash hit with a cover of her song Fast Car last year.

READ ALSO: Hardship in the land, By Kazeem Akintunde

Then Joni Mitchell gave a poignant seated rendition of her classic Both Sides Now – her first Grammy performance at the age of 80.

The Canadian singer-songwriter had earlier picked up best folk album for a live album that captured her return to the stage in 2022 after a brain aneurysm.

That was one of many awards that were handed out during a four-hour “premiere ceremony” on Sunday afternoon.

That pre-ceremony also saw multiple wins for indie-rock trio Boygenius, whose debut album The Record combines 1970s California rock harmonies with lyrics about love and friendship.

Rapper Killer Mike won three awards but was later filmed apparently being taken away in handcuffs backstage.

Kylie Minogue won her second ever Grammy, best pop dance recording, for the viral smash Padam Padam.

The global music industry is turning its attention to Africa and Nigeria’s new generation of artistes are quickly becoming its biggest success.

Top on the list of these Nigerian artistes is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as “Burna Boy” who according to Spotify’s ratings bagged second most streamed album after Wizkid who got first as the artiste with the most streamed album.

This was according to a statement released by Mr Owoyemi Ajayi, Spotify’s Account Manager.

Spotify is a global online streaming platform.

Ajayi said commendations go to a combination that includes talented artistes, exceptional producers, DJs, local and international promoters, leading entertainment Public Relations, marketing professionals, and a growing local audience.

“The Afro-fusion artiste hit the music world like a storm with the release of his global breakout album, “African Giant.”

“This has since staked a claim as one of the biggest stars on the music scene worldwide, a crossover sensation who refuses to compromise.

“Known for using his music as a tool for telling the story of his life and his surroundings, Burna Boy’s ability to weave tales of love and educate listeners on politics and expressions of vulnerability, while creating authentic Afrobeats, is how he’s been able to capture the world’s attention,” he said.

Ajayi said in spite the fact that Burna Boy didn’t release an album in 2021, this has still been a standout year for him, who has won a string of awards and sold out venues across the globe.

He noted that the two-time Grammy nominee won the award for Best Global Music Album in the World Music category for his 2020-released Twice as Tall album.

“As he noted while receiving his Grammy Award, ‘This is a big win for Africans of my generation all over the world’.

“His recent features on chart-topping singles like Question, Ginger and Yaba Buluku reinforces his vocal appendage as an Afro heirloom that artistes the world over seek to possess on their songs.

“From the thick gold chains that adorn his neck to his vast collection of rings and gold and jewel-encrusted teeth grills, Burna Boy has also carved a fashion niche for new-generation Afro-fusion acts.

“With huge global monthly listeners, Nigerian singer, rapper, and songwriter, Burna Boy is undoubtedly one of Africa’s biggest musical exports,” he said.

In Spotify’s recently released 2021 Wrapped data, Burna Boy featured prominently among the top 10 artistes in almost every listed country in Africa.

He ranked among the top 10 streamed artistes in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

The lowest position in these countries is number five in Kenya.

According to the Wrapped data, his album “Twice as Tall” is among the top 10 albums for the year in Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, as well as Uganda, and ranked in the top 30 in Kenya.

Burna Boy’s growth in the music industry and his many successes are inspirational as every step he takes elevates him, in the music industry in Nigeria, and the continent of Africa at large.

Burna Boy continues to march on, there’s a great possibility that the doors he walks through will be left open for the up-and-coming music artistes to follow in his footsteps.

He has been resilient in his pursuit to remain the ‘Odogwu’ or better still, the ‘African Giant’ of African music, most especially, the Afro sound.

Grammy Award winner, Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has been conferred with one of the highest awards in Rivers State by Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.

The award known as ‘‘Distinguished Service Star of Rivers State, DSSRS,” is the second highest distinction in Rivers State Order and is conferred on individuals in recognition of their exceptional service/performance in any field of human endeavour.

Governor Wike, conferred the honour on the internationally acclaimed music icon who won the Best Global Music Album with his Twice As Tall album at the 63rd Grammy Awards during a grand reception organised by the Rivers State government for him in Port Harcourt.

At the award ceremony which was attended by people from all walks of life, the governor said the honour aimed to show gratitude publicly to indigenes of Rivers State who have shown outstanding talent with their works and stood out head and shoulders above others in their endeavours.

The governor who described the homecoming reception for Burna Boy, who hails from Ahoada West Local Government Area of the state as a joyous moment for the state, also announced that the government would allocate him a land in Old Government Residential Area of Port Harcourt and give him money to build a house there.

“Rivers State government will provide a land at Old GRA for Burna Boy. Not only are we to provide that, we are going to give him money to build for himself. We are going to do that for him let others be encouraged, that if you get to this level, Rivers State government will promote you. We are happy with you (Burna Boy), we are happy with your parents for what they have done.”

Governor Wike explained that the ceremony was one of the happiest days of his life and assured that his administration would not relent in promoting indigenes of the state like Burna Boy and others who he said, made the state proud in any field of human endeavour.

“I will do what is required as a governor to encourage him (Burna Boy) and his parents and to encourage all our artists to know that the time has come when we must look inward; when we must come home. All of you, you go to Abuja, you go to Lagos, home is home. Who would have believed in this world that an Ahoada man will win Grammy. Who would have believed it? So, you should know that this is God’s own state.”

The governor commended Timaya, Duncan Mighty and other artists who graced the award ceremony in honour of Burna Boy and announced a gift of N10million each to all the artists that performed during the concert.

Burna Boy who was accompanied by his parents, siblings and crew, expressed profound gratitude to the government and people of Rivers State for considering him worthy of the award.

“I have collected honours everywhere in the world, but it feels different when you get it from home. This is my most humblest moment and I thank each and everyone of you. I thank the best governor I have ever experienced. I don’t like politics and politicians but this my governor has shown me that there is hope for the youths and there is hope for us.

“This award is not only for me but for all of you and the future Burna Boys. I love you Port Harcourt, everywhere I go, I carry you with me.”

Rivers State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mrs. Tonye Briggs Oniyide, said that in the entertainment sector, a nomination to any honours platform is an indication that the artist has provided value through his hard work.

“This victory on the world stage underscores the ability of raw talents in our state, it underlines our ability to focus on our goal. To our celebrant, I urge you to always remember that Rivers State is your own. Always find time to identify with the development here. Come home to join in the task of grooming young talents in the industry. Port Harcourt needs your music academy from where we can raise the Burna Boys of tomorrow.”
