A tragic boat accident on Saturday in Nafada town, Gombe State, has claimed the lives of five teenagers.

The victims were identified as Najib Ibrahim, 18; Hauwa’u Dogal, 15; Ummati Baraya, 16; Umaira Gidado, 16; and Amina Jaliya, 15.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State expressed deep sadness over the incident in a condolence message to the bereaved families.

The message was issued on Sunday in Gombe by his media aide, Mr Ismaila Uba-Misilli.

Yahaya described the incident as painful and heart-wrenching, especially given the tender ages of the victims and the grief caused to their families.

“This tragic incident has cut short the lives of promising young people,” the governor said, sympathising with their parents and the entire Nafada community.

He noted that the loss was not only a tragedy for the families but also for the entire state.

Yahaya prayed God to grant the deceased eternal rest and give their families the fortitude to bear the loss.

He emphasised the need for strict adherence to water transport safety standards to prevent future mishaps.

The governor urged local councils, community leaders, boat operators, and regulators to enforce safety protocols across riverine areas.

He directed the State Emergency Management Agency and the Nafada Local Government Council to support the affected families.

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Command, has generated N20.9 billion between January and December 2022.

This is contained in a statement in Lagos, on Wednesday by Juliana Tomo, a Superintendent of Customs and the Command’s Public Relations Officer.

Tomo also said that Mohammed Gidado, the Customs Area Controller, CAC, said the command had in the corresponding year of 2021 generated N19.05 billion.

“Comparing 2021 and 2022 revenues collected, there is an increased collection of N1.85 billion.

“This is due to an improved integrity of passengers’ in the declaration of goods and high level of compliance towards voluntary payment of (Couriers Parcels, Passengers Accompanied and Unaccompanied Baggage) Duty,” he said.

He noted that during the December 2022 review, the command collected N1.8 billion only and within the same period in 2021, the sum of N1.6 billion was generated.

“This simply implies that the command had an increased sum of N393.3 million only in 2022,” he said.

He noted that the seamless travellers’ clearance procedure adopted by the command as initiated by him over the period was worthwhile.

He added that that was as shown in the Murtala Muhammed International Airport command revenue collected between August and December 2022.

“This shows effectiveness of initiated and adopted strategies while measuring performance and challenges from August to December 2022, compared to the preceding year’s revenue collection of 2021.

“This I can say is towards a better performance in the near future,” he said.

The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has tested positive for coronavirus, his media aide, Mukhtar Gidado, has revealed.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, said his principal had since the discovery been quarantined.

While stating that the governor begged for prayers, Gidado said his doctors and officials from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, had taken full charge of his quarantine.

It would be recalled that the governor went into self-isolation after he shook hand with the son of former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, who was discovered to have tested positive for the virus.

The statement by Gidado reads: “This is to inform the general public that the result of the six initial tests carried out by the Nigeria Centre for Diseases Control (NCDC) on His Excellency, Sen. Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, his family and aides that accompanied him to Lagos is out. Of the Six initial tests carried out, one sample was confirmed positive of COVID -19.

“The positive result happened to be that of His Excellency Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State.

“At this point, it should be noted that the Governor is in self-isolation as his Doctors and officials from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) have taken full charge of his quarantine. His Excellency, solicits for prayers from all and requests that all those who had contact with him or any one known to have the same medical condition to go for test immediately in order to avert further spread of the COVID -19 epidemic.”
