A former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, Prof. C.O.N. Ikeobi, has declared that a strong work ethic remains the most critical factor in achieving sustainable agricultural development in Nigeria, warning that weak professional attitudes could undermine efforts to boost food security.

He made the declaration on Wednesday in FUNAAB during a presentation titled “AMREC Work Ethics: Building a Strong Foundation for Success.”

The professor highlighted the central role of discipline, integrity, and accountability among staff of the Agricultural Media Resources and Extension Centre, AMREC, the university’s outreach arm to farming communities.

According to him, work ethic goes beyond technical competence.

He described it as “the internal compass that determines how individuals behave even when supervision is absent.”

He noted that institutions driven by strong ethical values were more productive, innovative, and better positioned to deliver impactful solutions.

Ikeobi emphasised that ethical conduct is particularly crucial in agricultural research and extension services, where inaccurate data or delayed information could result in significant crop losses for farmers.

He warned that AMREC’s credibility—and by extension that of FUNAAB—depended heavily on the professionalism of its workforce.

“As the bridge between research and rural farmers, AMREC must prioritise reliability and timeliness. A delay in communicating pest control measures or climate information can have devastating consequences,” he said.

The former university administrator identified key challenges facing AMREC staff, including limited resources, difficult terrain, and tight production schedules, noting that only a workforce grounded in strong ethics could effectively navigate the constraints.

He outlined core values expected of staff, including punctuality, honesty, teamwork, professionalism, and continuous learning.

He stressed that employees must take ownership of their responsibilities, avoid complacency, and remain proactive in solving problems without constant supervision.

Ikeobi also warned against what he described as “toxic competence,” where highly skilled workers lack discipline or integrity, noting that such individuals could damage team morale and institutional reputation.

On performance standards, he underscored the importance of attendance, loyalty, trustworthiness, initiative, and effective communication, adding that attitude often determines the level of success an individual or organisation can attain.

“Attitude determines altitude,” he stated, urging workers to embrace positive mindsets even in challenging environments.

To strengthen institutional efficiency, the professor recommended a shift from rigid supervision to a coaching-based management style, advocating for clear goal-setting, staff development, and regular feedback mechanisms.

He also called for fairness in enforcing rules, warning that selective discipline could erode trust within the organisation.

He further advised leadership to motivate staff through recognition, provision of adequate tools, and clear communication of organisational goals, noting that employees perform better when they understood the impact of their work on farmers’ livelihoods.

Ikeobi concluded that AMREC’s success — and its ability to transform Nigeria’s agricultural landscape — depended less on funding and more on the ethical commitment of its workforce.

“The soil of success is work ethic,” he declared, urging staff to see themselves not as routine civil servants, but as critical partners in national development, particularly in supporting farmers across Ogun State and beyond.

Speaking earlier at the event, AMREC Director, Prof Olalekan Jacob Olaoye said the centre, uniquely positioned at the interface of research, communication, and community engagement, bore the mandate of knowledge into practical solutions that address real-world agricultural challenges.

These challenges, Olaoye stated, ranged from climate variability and food insecurity to post-harvest losses and the urgent need for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture development, require a responsive, innovative, and knowledge-driven extension system.

According to him, the strength of any extension system lies in its capacity to adapt, innovate, and deliver measurable impact.

Consequently he said, “we must move beyond conventional approaches and embrace modern extension paradigms, including digital extension services, participatory methodologies, and value chain-driven interventions.”

The training session also had two other eminent professors in the Centre, the Deputy Director, Prof Ọlálékan Oyekunle, and Prof Oluwakemi Irhekore deliver papers of interest on various topics.

Relief has come the way of indigent students of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, from the institution’s extension arm, Agricultural Media Resources and Extension Centre, AMREC.

A total of 60 students benefitted from 5kg garri support package aimed at improving their welfare and cushioning the impact of the prevailing economic challenges in the country.

The initiative by AMREC was in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security under the Renewed Hope National Accelerated Garri Programme of the President Bola Tinubu administration.

Speaking during the presentation of the items, Director of AMREC, Prof. Jacob Olaoye, explained that the programme was designed to provide students with essential food items to help them remain focused on their academic activities despite the current economic realities.

Olaoye noted that the initiative reflected the commitment of the university and its partners to promoting student welfare and ensuring that students receive the support needed to excel in their studies.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Prof. Olawale Dairo, commended the supporting organisations for the intervention.

The Vice-Chancellor encouraged students to maintain responsible behaviour capable of attracting more partnerships and opportunities to the university.

Also speaking, the Dean, Student Affairs, Prof. Festus Adeosun, appreciated the federal government for supporting the initiative and appealed for the inclusion of more food items in future distributions to enhance the programme’s impact.

He emphasised that welfare initiatives played a significant role in creating a supportive and conducive learning environment for students.

A beneficiary, Miss Grace Olumide, a 500-Level student of the Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics, described the support as timely and beneficial.

She conveyed appreciation to the organisers, stating that the garri packs would help students maintain the energy required to concentrate effectively on their studies.

The event underscored FUNAAB’s continued commitment to student welfare and academic success.

A top Registry staff of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, Mrs. Emilomo Joy Alawode, has been appointed as the third substantive Registrar of McPherson University, McU, Seriki-Sotayo, Ogun State.

Mrs. Alawode, a Deputy Registrar at FUNAAB, was appointed by the Board of Trustees of McPherson University, underscoring the growing national recognition of FUNAAB’s administrative depth and its consistent grooming of Principal Officers for universities across Nigeria.

A seasoned university administrator, Alawode brings to her new role decades of rich professional experience spanning academic administration, human resource management, governance, public relations, and media engagement.

Notably, she was the pioneer Visiting Deputy Registrar at McPherson University in 2012, where she played a pivotal role in laying the institution’s administrative foundation, strengthening staff coordination and student records management systems.

During that period, she also established the university’s first official news bulletin, MCU Echo, setting the benchmark for structured internal and external communication.

At FUNAAB, Alawode served across several strategic units of the university registry, managing over 17,500 students and 3,500 staff records during key academic sessions.

Her introduction of digital administrative tools improved operational efficiency by over 60 per cent, reinforcing FUNAAB’s standing as a forward-looking institution committed to innovation and best practices in university governance.

She also worked closely with the Senate and Governing Council of both FUNAAB and McPherson University, contributing significantly to policy formulation, institutional reforms, and effective governance.

As Head of the Academic Staff Establishment Unit at FUNAAB, she pioneered the deployment of e-meeting folders for the Appointments and Promotions Committee, reducing paper usage, minimising delays, and enhancing administrative efficiency.

She also served, at two different times, as substantive Head of the Directorate of Public Relations at FUNAAB, where she redesigned the University Bulletin, achieving over 40 per cent growth in readership and engagement.

Her leadership in strategic communication contributed to the university’s multiple national awards, while she also laid the foundation for FUNAAB’s official presence on social media platforms, including Facebook and X.

An accomplished scholar and lifelong learner, Alawode holds two Master’s Degrees in International Communication from Leeds Beckett University, United Kingdom, and Vilnius University, Lithuania.

She earned a combined first degree in Classics and Linguistics from the University of Ibadan.

Currently pursuing Doctoral studies, her research explores how digital literacy and online platforms empower women in the informal economy.

Beyond the Nigerian university system, she has distinguished herself globally as a technology advocate, educator, and mentor.

She is a former Volunteer Director of Women Who Code, Barcelona, an educator with SheAI, and a part-time lecturer at the Swiss School of Management, Barcelona.

She is also a member of several reputable professional bodies, including the International Academic Forum (IAFOR), Professional Women’s Network Global, Association of University Administrators (AUA), and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR), and a Fellow of the Netherlands Universities Foundation for International Cooperation (NUFFIC), the Internet Society, and the Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria.

Mrs. Alawode is deeply committed to mentoring young people, particularly women, and co-convenes EmpowHer, a platform dedicated to equipping African female undergraduates with leadership and career skills.

She also mentors through international networks such as World Pulse, The Bloom, and Vilnius University, while remaining active in LeanIn and Toastmasters International.

Her appointment, conveyed in a letter signed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of McPherson University Governing Council, Rev. (Dr.) Babatunde Idowu, reflects McPherson University’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and people-centred administration.

It also reinforces FUNAAB’s enduring legacy as a national powerhouse for nurturing competent university administrators who continue to provide leadership across Nigeria’s higher education landscape.

Congratulating Mrs. Alawode, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, stated that her appointment was a testament to her professionalism, diligence, and exemplary service at FUNAAB, adding that the university remained proud of its tradition of grooming competent administrators who contributed meaningfully to the growth of higher education across the country.

Meanwhile, it should be noted that no fewer than 18 staff members of FUNAAB had gone to superintend over several institutions within and outside of Nigeria as principal officers in the last three years.

Two key areas of advancement that could have made life easy for Nigerians through capacity to resolve life-threatening medical conditions with ease and the use of fingerprints to track criminal elements are not being taken seriously by the federal government, experts have posited.

The experts who are Geneticists, Emeritus Professor Olufunmilayo Adebambo and Prof Ikhide Imumorin stated that the absence of a comprehensive genetic database of all persons residing in the country was a major reason early detection of Cancer cases and other grave health conditions as well as the use of technology to track criminals had become a tall order.

Prof Adebambo who retired from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, and Prof Imumorin, Executive Director, California State University Biotechnology Programme, spoke while featuring as guests on the popular monthly online interview discourse, Boiling Point Arena.

The current affairs programme, hosted by a media professional, Dr. Ayo Arowojolu, was transmitted via Zoom and broadcast live on six radio stations, chaired by frontline traditional ruler, the Olówu of Owu, Oba Prof Saka Matemilola.

According to the experts, the much-needed genetic database can never materialize without the federal government funding researches leading to a population-based genetic analysis based on DNA testing.

The topic of discourse was, “Genetic Revelations: Understanding the Conundrum of Paternity Conflicts in Modern Families.”

To Prof Adebambo who is acclaimed as Nigeria’s first female Professor of Animal Breeding, Genetics and Biotechnology, Nigeria still had a long way to go as the database signposts a major foundation for many developmental needs desired for the country.

READ ALSO: Tinubu celebrates son, Seyi, at 40 for generational impact

Her words: “At creation, God already standardized genetic makeup of every human being and animal. If anybody has lived on this planet, the bone can tell us about the DNA, about the genetic makeup. The hair, even the nail can give us the genetic makeup, the immune genes, because it’s already programmed by God.

“The Immune Genes are created by God and are genetically inherited to control our disease system. Even diseases are inherited. Everything about our inheritance are already coded right from the beginning of our existence.

“Right now in Nigeria, there is a dire need for human genetic database like they have in the USA and Europe especially for criminal tendencies. So you can’t escape if you are a criminal because the moment you enter those countries, they will take your fingerprints and the fingerprints are already loaded in the database.

“The database is what we are lacking in Nigeria. But, before we can say we need the database, the government has not really funded genetic research. God will help us in Nigeria.

“It has become very important for us in Nigeria to begin to look at our DNA, our genetic inheritance, every cell in our body and our hormone system are all coded.

“The database will greatly improve our health system. Our system can be personalized individually even up to drugs. There are certain drugs you can use that some other people cannot use. It also determines blood transfusion issues.”

For his his part, Prof Imumorin spoke in the same vein, lamenting that there had never been any proper population-based genetic analysis in Nigeria stemming from any rigorous scientific survey.

Said Prof Imomurin’s: “The impact of genetic testing in medical applications cannot be over-emphasized. We are looking into a world in the US and in many other advanced countries where many therapies can now be personalized.

“So if you’re a patient, maybe, for cancer treatment, rheumatoid arthritis or some kind of neurological treatment like Parkinson’s disease or paranoid Schizophrenia or multiple Sclerosis, there are a number of things out there for which they now have very, very good testing. What that means is they will take your DNA and they will analyze your DNA to get your profile. And that profile, which is personal to you, will now be used as a basis to find a very particular therapy that is tailored to that particular profile.

“I’ve lived in the US for a very long time. Here, there’s a system that works to avert the issue of baby swapping or switching. They make use of appropriate tags which are put on the baby and same on the mother right from the labour room. And so, between the time the baby is actually born and the time the mother and baby are discharged, there is a window of time when the baby is in the nursery. It’s like a big place where they have all these beds lined up side by side where they put all the babies.”

Prof Imumorin appealed to the federal government to urgently prioritize the issues of databases critical to the developmental progress of Nigeria.

The interview discourse which lasted two hours was broadcast live on WASH FM, Lagos, Sweet FM, Abeokuta, Roots FM, Abeokuta, Ẹrimbe FM, Shagamu, Women Radio FM, Mowe, and Kruzz FM, Asaba.

Any university or tertiary institution that fails to deploy digital tools for its day-to-day administration and particularly for enhancing data-driven decision making will be left behind in the 21st century era, a human resource expert, Dr Niyi Akomolafe has posited.

Akomolafe, a Deputy Registrar at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, made the assertion while delivering a paper at the Federal College of Agriculture, Moor Plantation, Ibadan, FCAI.

His paper was titled: “Effective Human Resources Management” at an in-house seminar organised for staff of the College.

In attendance was the Provost of the College, Prof. Jonathan Atungwu alongside three other erudite Guest Speakers, Prof. Kolawole Adebayo, a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor, FUNAAB, Dr. Samson Odedina, a former Commissioner for Agriculture in Ogun State and Dr. M.V. David.

Akomolafe harped on the paramountcy of digital accessibility for the management of human resources of any organisation, emphasizing that the 21st century administrator must leverage technological tools to enhance seamless operations in the institution.

His words: “As Administrators, you must keep mastering competences for excellence and building skills in strategic human resources management to aid objectives of your Institution as well as enhance collaborations and helping to streamline communication.

“The 21st Century Administrator must develop capacity and use the capacity to provide excellent services and thereby help to achieve outstanding results.

READ ALSO: Suspected killer of Kogi journalist is dead –Police

“Technological tools will assist greatly in the area of data-driven decision making through comprehensive HR reports that include analytics and metrics.”

To Akomolafe, “the era of key management making decisions based on intuition rather than by evidence, is long gone.”

He pointed out that effective decision making was crucial for resource allocation and strategic planning.

The HR expert also spoke on the need for standardization of templates to ensure consistency which makes it easier to track progress and review past decisions.

Akomolafe also tasked administrators to utilize technology to leverage tools like data visualization platforms to enhance utility of reports to pave way for more digestible information for diverse audiences within the institution.

The Babcock University-trained HR expert also harped on the need for regular review and feedback as establishing a culture of regular review for upgrading effectiveness will bring about sustainable development in the institution.

For the College’s Registry, Akomolafe’s recommendation is that the engine room of the institution’s administration should craft innovative solutions capable of helping staff to move from Procedural Knowledge to Creative Knowledge through continuous self-development and self-investment.

Akomolafe concluded by tasking the institution’s management to double their investment in staff training, especially that of professional administrators, pointing out that “What is neglected could be what will be affected or what is ignored might ultimately influence outcomes.”

He submitted: “The Federal College of Agriculture, Ibadan, must improve the system in terms of ICT infrastructure, internet facilities and learning deliverables while qualified Administrators could be engaged to assist the institution to fix problems related with their areas of calling.

“Career administrators must be acknowledged and incentivised for their contributions to the effective functioning of HR Unit.”

Bamboo wine production combines indigenous knowledge, natural fermentation and modern sustainability.

It stands at the intersection of culture, health, and green innovation and served as a potential model for value-added bamboo utilisation.

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities SSANU, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB Branch, has expressed strong displeasure and condemnation of the proposed sharing formula of the recently released N50 billion Earned Allowance, EA, and Earned Academic Allowance, EAA, by the federal government to public-owned universities.

The association said the decision to allocate the N50 billion released to universities, using a 20-80 per cent sharing formula in favour of Teaching Staff was not only unjust but also a clear breach of the agreement reached with government by the Joint Action Committee, JAC, of the Non-Teaching unions of SSANU and NASU on August 23, 2022.

According to a press statement signed by its chairman, Comrade Olugbenga Alayode, SSANU-FUNAAB, in the spirit of equity and fairness, demanded the immediate reversal of the decision, urging the federal government to adopt a 50-50 per cent sharing formula, which is more equitable and just.

The statement reads further: “We insist that the N50bn should be disbursed to universities to share among their staff in an equitable manner, without any form of favoritism or discrimination. This will ensure that all staff, regardless of their cadre, benefit fairly from the allocation.

“We urge the federal government to avoid any actions that may cause further divisions within the university system, as we will not hesitate to take necessary actions as may be directed by our National Executives Council, NEC, to protect the interests of our members if this injustice is not addressed.

“SSANU-FUNAAB stands firm for integrity, equity and justice in solidarity with all its members.”
