The Lagos State government, FirstBank and Zenith Bank are among the public and private sector institutions supporting the second edition of the QEDNG Creative Powerhouse Summit.

Also supporting the summit are the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service, LIRS, Fidelity Bank, Polaris Bank, the Africa Soft Power Group and Nigeria LNG Limited, NLNG.

The announcement was made on Wednesday by Mighty Media Plus Network Limited, publishers of the online newspaper QEDNG.

QEDNG Creative Powerhouse Summit 2.0 is themed Creativity, Culture and Nigeria’s Next Chapter.

It will hold on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja GRA, Lagos.

The summit will bring together leaders from the creative industries, business, government and technology to examine how stronger partnerships among government, investors and the creative community can unlock opportunities for growth, job creation and sustainable development.

FirstBank, NLNG and Polaris Bank return for the second consecutive year after supporting the inaugural edition of the summit in 2025.

The organisers also acknowledged the contributions of media and logistics partners including Abelinis Limited, ID Africa, Integrated Digital Communications Limited, IDCL, and IBST Media whose support is helping to deliver this year’s summit.

Commenting on the growing support for the event, QEDNG publisher and convener of the summit, Olumide Iyanda, said the institutions involved shared a common belief in the potential of Nigeria’s creative economy.

“We appreciate every organisation that has chosen to support the QEDNG Creative Powerhouse Summit. Some have provided sponsorship, while others are contributing through partnerships, media collaboration and logistics. Every contribution is important because it helps us create a platform where leaders from different sectors can have meaningful conversations about the future of Nigeria’s creative economy, Iyanda said.

The convener added that the summit was designed to encourage collaboration among policymakers, investors, business leaders and creative professionals, noting that sustained partnerships are essential to unlocking the sector’s full potential.

The organisers had earlier announced Sir Demola Aladekomo, executive chairman of SmartCity Resorts Plc, as chairman of the summit, and Ife Adebayo, national coordinator of the Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (iDICE) programme at the Bank of Industry, as keynote speaker.

Other confirmed speakers are Joke Silva, Steve Babaeko, Bukunmi Ilori-Adeaga (widely known as Kiekie), Efe Omorogbe, Omotayo Inakoju, Yibo Koko, Dr. Olamide Okulaja, Anwuli Ojogwu and Fisayo Fosudo.

The leadership of the Nigeria School Sport Federation, NSSF, technical partners of the First Bank/Samuel Okwaraji Foundation, SOF, and National Secondary Schools football championship have applauded the standard of the competition.

With state representatives already determined in all the northern states and most of the southern states, the foremost grassroots and school sport body is happy that the competition, through the processes put in place for this inaugural edition, is living up to expectations.

Secretary General of the NSSF, Dr Oba Funsho Usman, said the thorough and transparent systems put in place have ensured that the main objective of the competition, which is to discover football talents hidden in schools are met, eradicating to the barest cases of use of ineligible players and mercenaries.

“We know the things that mar brilliant grassroots initiatives of this nature and we have blocked all loopholes and dealt decisively with those negative practices this time around.

“The NSSF is thrilled with all that have been achieved in this First Bank/Samuel Okwaraji Foundation Competition. The main objective is to ensure that talents in secondary schools have a national platform to showcase themselves.

“The state representatives in all the Northern states (North East, North West and North Central) have emerged and the representatives in the South East and South South have also emerged while the South West will be concluding their finals this weekend.

“The state finals had to be staggered so that they can be properly organised and monitored. This is a national competition so there must be adherence to standards.

“This explains why as technical partners, we are happy with the high standards in place for this inaugural edition so that we can lay a solid foundation for future editions and most importantly provide the platform for the right participants with the right ages to be discovered,” Usman concluded.

The Memoir Cup, as the competition is also called is held in memory of Nigeria’s fallen football legend Samuel Okwaraji who slumped and died on August 12, 1989 while in active service for Nigeria during a 1990 World Cup qualifiers against Angola in Lagos.

Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Ltd , SNEPCo, today took a major step towards empowering Nigerian contractors with the launch of a $3-billion Contract Finance Facility in partnership with nine leading Nigerian banks.

The facility is designed to provide credit support for local contractors executing projects for SNEPCo operations and will be available in both Naira and US Dollars.

The participating banks are First Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank, Access Bank, United Bank for Africa, Stanbic IBTC, Standard Chartered Bank, First City Monument Bank and Fidelity Bank.

Speaking at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding in Lagos, the SNEPCo Managing Director, Ronald Adams said, “the initiative reflects the spirit of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry Content Development Act, which is aimed at in-country value retention. Our partner banks offer capital and discipline. SNEPCo brings contracts and domiciliation of payments that de-risk lending. On their part, the contractors provide performance. Each is accountable to others, and the mutual accountability gives the arrangement its strength.”

Also speaking at the signing ceremony, the Vice President Finance, Shell Nigeria, C. J. Akwaeze, said the scheme reflects Shell’s commitment to the growth of oil and gas operations in Nigeria.

The chairman of indigenous oil and gas contractor group PETAN, Wole Ogunsanya, represented by Dr. Joan Faluyi, lauded the scheme as a “gateway to unlocking contractor financing issues which will also drive efficiency in contract execution.”

Representatives of the banks commended SNEPCo for the opportunity to partner on an initiative aimed at empowering contractors and assured the company of their continued support and cooperation.

Nigerian companies have continued to play key roles in supporting SNEPCo’s operation and project execution.

Early this year, 43 wholly Nigerian companies took part in the turnaround maintenance exercise at the Bonga Floating Production and Offloading, FPSO, vessel out of the total of 53 companies involved.

The Contract Finance Facility is expected to further boost the capacity of Nigerian companies to deliver even more value in the operations of Nigeria’s premier deepwater producer.

By OLUSOJI DAOMI

There is a quiet fear that lives in the mind of many Nigerians today.

You wake up one morning.

You try to transfer money.

The app refuses.

You walk into the bank.

They tell you, “Your account has been restricted.”

No prior notice.

No court summons.

No explanation.

Just silence… and sudden financial paralysis.

For many, that moment feels like the end of control over their own life. Rent is due. Business is on hold. School fees are hanging. And yet, somewhere in the background, an unseen hand has locked access to your own money.

But a recent court decision has sent a clear message, one that every Nigerian must understand.

Your bank account is not a playground for arbitrary power.

In Suit No. PHC/331/CS/2023, between Okpako Uzoazokaro Helen and Guaranty Trust Bank Limited, First Bank of Nigeria Limited, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the High Court was invited to answer a simple but profound question: can a person’s bank account be frozen without lawful authority?

The answer, delivered with judicial clarity, was no.

The facts, as revealed before the court, read like a familiar Nigerian story. A petition is written. Allegations are made. A security agency swings into action. Banks, anxious not to fall foul of authority, comply. And the citizen, often unaware of the legal intricacies, becomes the casualty.

In this case, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, acting on a petition reportedly written by a former partner of the claimant, moved swiftly. An ex parte order was obtained from a Magistrate Court. The banks were served. The accounts were restricted.

But here is where law parts ways with assumption.

Not every court order is valid simply because it carries a stamp.

And no authority, however powerful, is above the law.

The High Court examined the so-called ex parte order and found it wanting, fundamentally defective, legally incompetent, and ultimately a nullity. The Magistrate Court, His Lordship held, lacked the jurisdiction to make such an order in the first place. And in law, when a court acts without jurisdiction, its decision is not merely irregular. It is void. It is as though it never existed.

The implications are far-reaching.

A null order confers no rights.

It imposes no duties.

It commands no obedience.

In other words, the banks were under no legal obligation to act on it.

But they did.

And that is where another layer of legal education emerges for the Nigerian public.

Banks are not just financial institutions. They are also custodians of trust. When they receive directives affecting customers’ accounts, the law expects them to act cautiously, not mechanically. Compliance must be grounded in legality, not fear.

The court went further. It addressed a technical issue that many Nigerians often overlook but which carries significant legal weight. The entities referred to in the defective order as “GTB” and “FBN” were described without their proper corporate identities. In law, that is not a trivial mistake.

A company derives its legal personality from its incorporation. It is “Guaranty Trust Bank Limited” or “First Bank of Nigeria Limited” that the law recognizes, not abbreviations or informal names. Legal proceedings are not conducted in street language. Precision matters. Identity matters.

Then came perhaps the most troubling aspect of the case.

The conduct of the investigating authority.

Evidence before the court showed that the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps did not obtain statements from the nominal complainant or any independent witness. The process, which should have been investigative, appeared impulsive. The account was reportedly frozen even before the petition received formal approval for investigation.

If established, such conduct raises serious questions, not just about procedure, but about discipline within enforcement institutions.

Let us be clear.

Nigeria is a country battling fraud, cybercrime, and financial misconduct. Law enforcement agencies have a duty to act. But that duty is not a licence for arbitrariness. Power must operate within the boundaries of law. Once it crosses that boundary, it ceases to be authority and becomes abuse.

This is where the Constitution quietly but firmly intervenes.

Section 36 guarantees fair hearing.

Section 44 protects property rights.

Money in a bank account is not abstract. It is property. It is livelihood. It is survival.

To freeze that account without lawful justification is to interfere with a citizen’s constitutional rights.

The court’s decision, therefore, is not just a victory for one individual. It is a reaffirmation of a principle: that in Nigeria, even power must bow to law.

But what lessons should ordinary Nigerians take from this?

First, do not assume that every restriction on your account is automatically lawful. Ask questions. Demand to see the order. Verify its origin.

Second, understand that not all security agencies have the same scope of authority. Financial crimes, for instance, are typically within the purview of agencies like the police or the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Jurisdiction is not a decorative concept in law. It is foundational.

Third, know that ex parte orders, those obtained without hearing the other side, are meant to be used cautiously and within strict legal limits. They are not tools for harassment or personal vendetta.

Fourth, remember that the law provides remedies. A person whose account is unlawfully frozen is not helpless. The courts remain open.

This case also sends a message to institutions, banks and enforcement agencies alike.

Due process is not optional.

Legal scrutiny is not an inconvenience.

Compliance without verification can lead to liability.

For too long, many Nigerians have lived with the quiet assumption that once a powerful institution acts, resistance is futile. But cases like this remind us that the rule of law is not theoretical. It is practical. It is enforceable.

It may take time.

It may demand patience.

But when properly invoked, it speaks with authority.

And when it speaks, it reminds everyone, citizen and institution alike, that Nigeria is governed not by impulse, but by law.

In the end, the deeper lesson is simple.

Your account is your property.

Your rights are not decorative.

And no authority, however powerful, is above the law.

For millions of Nigerians, homeownership has long felt like an ambition deferred. Squeezed by rising property prices, persistent double-digit inflation and high commercial lending rates, the dream of owning a home has remained just that – a dream.

But that narrative is quietly changing. Thanks to FirstBank.

The N1 Trillion Intervention Reshaping Access

In partnership with the Ministry of Finance Incorporated Real Estate Investment Fund (MREIF), FirstBank has unveiled a mortgage opportunity that could redefine access to housing finance in Nigeria.

Backed by the Federal Government’s N1trillion mortgage fund, the initiative is designed to empower Nigerians with affordable, long-term credit to own their homes.

9.75% Interest Rate in a 30% Lending Environment

MREIF is priced at 9.75% per annum, dramatically lower than prevailing commercial loan rates. Eligible Nigerians can access up to N100 million and repay within 20 years. This translates into significantly more manageable monthly repayments and greater long-term financial stability.

Built for Salary Earners, Entrepreneurs and the Diaspora

The MREIF mortgage facility has been structured to be inclusive. It is available to salary account holders, business owners and diaspora customers. Whether you are a young professional aiming to exit the rent cycle, an entrepreneur building generational stability, or you’re a Nigerian abroad looking to secure assets locally, the product opens a pathway that has historically been out of reach for many.

Taking the First Step

For those who have been waiting for the right time, this is definitely it. The question is no longer whether homeownership is possible. The real question is: will you act before the window narrows?

Visit https://www.firstbanknigeria.com/personal/loans/mreif-home-loan/ and in no time you could be the latest homeowner in town.

For many Nigerians, home ownership has always felt like a long dream parked somewhere between someday and maybe. However, the MREIF Mortgage Loan by FirstBank of Nigeria is quietly changing that narrative.

Here are five things you should know:

1.Designed for Real People

This is not a luxury only scheme. It is structured to help middle income earners move from rent payments to ownership with a manageable repayments plan.

2.Single-Digit Interest Is Real (Yes, Really)

At 9.75% per annum, this isn’t your typical Nigerian mortgage with rates that make your eyes water. In a market where double-digit interest is the norm, this government-backed rate feels almost like a financial hack.

It is a Step Toward Financial Security.

Rent is an expense. A mortgage is an asset building strategy. This loan bridges the gap between today’s income and tomorrow’s equity.

The Diaspora Dream Is Alive

Nigerians abroad, take note; you can access this too. All you need is credit scores from international agencies like Equifax (plus a few extra documents) and that Lagos or Abuja home isn’t just a retirement fantasy anymore. It turns real.

Your Down Payment Just Got Smaller

Forget saving 30-40% upfront. MREIF requires just 10% equity contribution. That ₦100 million home? You need ₦10 million, not ₦30 million. The barrier to entry has never been this low for genuine homeownership.

The company died. I have no hand in its demise. In my earlier life, I consulted for a company called Automated Teller Machine Consortium [ATMC]. The company could not have survived. It shared the same women with its founders. ATMC was a special-purpose vehicle established by the banks to deploy off-site ATMs. The shareholders were: Diamond Bank. Fidelity Bank. First Bank. Afribank. UBA. Union Bank. Wema Bank. Zenith Bank. Accenture. Before its death, ATMC was the largest independent ATM deployer [IAD] in Nigeria.

The company aimed to deploy 2,000 shared ATMs in Nigeria. The machines carried the insignia Quickcash. Anywhere you found the Quickcash logo you would get cash. Quickcash was located in places without bank presence. Eateries. Fuel stations. Shopping malls. Restaurants etc. The initial rollout was smooth. Then the Quickcash brand died quickly. Why?

On the one hand

Could you hand over your off-site ATMs to ATMC? The CBN ordered. The first CEO of ATMC, Olumide Bajomo, and his team were happy. It appeared to Bajomo that the CBN’s order would quicken the rollout of more Quickcash machines. He was disappointed. The banks refused to hand over their machines. Bajomo exited. Why?

On the other hand

Noble Ekajeh, Bajomo’s successor, inherited the legacy system. Our discussions were on the same issue. It was obvious that the ATM consortium was not working. To confirm it, the CBN reversed its policy. Banks could deploy cash machines anywhere. Then the bank consolidation exercise sealed ATMC’s fate. The banks that were uncooperative earlier now had official backing. Adieu ATMC.

In the long term

Why did the banks refuse to hand over their machines? Does a bank profit from deploying an ATM? No. How do I know? A reason that led to ATMC’s demise was the high maintenance cost. To maintain a cash machine, you need a cash machine. You need cash. You need a machine to count the cash. You need a sorter to find ATM-fit banknotes. You must do this every day. Seven days a week. Four weeks a month. 365 days a year.

You need a cash-in-transit vehicle to ferry the cash to the designated machine. You need security personnel. You need electricity and a diesel power generator. You need a steady internet connection. You must pay rent. Add these hurdles to the uncooperative stance of the banks. ATMC enjoyed the ride. ATMC could not survive.

ATM sales and management guru, Tope Dare, the man who sold most of the ATMs in Nigeria, told me recently that a bank does not profit from deploying an ATM. Dare listed the following reasons: High cost of capital expenditure [CAPEX] on ATMs: High cost of maintenance. High cost of power infrastructure maintenance. Cash management. One of the leading bank CEOs said on one of the platforms I belong to: ‘’Banks do not make money from ATMs. I know this is hard to understand but it is true. It is not possible to make money from ATMs. It is uneconomical to serve the people using the ATMs’’.

In the short term

The banks earn revenue by charging non-customers fees for using their ATMs. In the ATM race, ATMC could not have survived.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has handed over N802,420,000 recovered from a suspect by its Benin Zonal Directorate to the First Bank Nigeria Plc.

Its spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to him, the money was recovered from a suspect, Ojo Kingsley, who took unlawful possession of over N1.3 billion belonging to the bank.

”The bank, in its petition to the EFCC, had alleged that system glitches led it to erroneously credit the account of Kingsley, a customer of the bank with the said amount.

”The commission in its investigation discovered that the suspect, upon the receipt of the money, transferred a good measure of it to the bank accounts of his mother, Itohan Ojo and that of his sister, Edith Okoro Osaretin.

”He also committed part of the money to completion of his building project and the funding of a new flamboyant lifestyle.

”With the recovery of the money from the identified bank accounts, the EFCC handed it over in drafts to First Bank.”

The Acting Director, Benin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC, Deputy Commander of the EFCC, Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad, handed over the money to the bank official.

Sa’ad, while handing over the money, said that the EFCC would continue to discharge its mandate effectively in the overall interests of the society.

“The EFCC Establishment Act empowers us to trace and recover proceeds of crime and restitute the victim. In this case, First Bank was the victim and that is exactly what we have done.

”We will continue to discharge our duties to ensure that fraudsters do not benefit from fraud and that economic and financial crimes are nipped in the bud,” he said.

In his response, Olalere Ajayi, Business Manager, First Bank, Benin, who received the drafts on behalf of the bank, commended the EFCC for a job well done.

While lauding the commission for swiftness and the professionalism it brought to bear in the handling of the matter, Ajayi expressed the bank’s gratitude to the commission.

He described the commission as one of Nigeria’s most effective and reliable institutions.

The statement said that Kingsley and all other suspects in the matter had been charged to court for stealing by the EFCC.

The Lagos Lagoon glistened in shades of blue and gold as electric powerboats sliced through the water, cheered on by an ecstatic crowd that lined Victoria Island’s waterfront from Saturday, 3 October to Sunday, 5 October. For two unforgettable days, Lagos became Africa’s capital of clean energy, glamour, and innovation, all powered by First Bank of Nigeria, the sponsor of the continent’s first-ever E1 Lagos Grand Prix.

From the rhythmic sounds of Afrobeats echoing across the Marina to the sight of sleek, futuristic boats gliding silently on water, the E1 Lagos GP was more than a race, it was a celebration of Lagos’ vibrant spirit and Nigeria’s march towards sustainability.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a goodwill message, hailed the event as a bold statement of intent by Nigeria and Lagos, praising Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, First Bank, and other partners for delivering a world-class spectacle.

“The E1 Powerboat series combines world-class entertainment with clean energy innovation. This championship is not just a thrilling spectacle on water but a commitment to a greener and more sustainable future,” the president had said at the opening ceremony of the great event on Friday, 3 October.

He described Lagos as “a gateway to innovation, technology, and global sporting excellence,” affirming the nation’s readiness to lead Africa’s transition to clean energy.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who led the regatta that opened the event, described the championship as a proud moment for Lagos and a reflection of its global potential.

“E1 Lagos GP is more than a race; it is a celebration of Lagos’ dynamism, the Spirit of Lagos,” the governor said, adding that “It shows our capacity to host world-class events and underscores our commitment to sustainability.”

Crowds thronged the Lagos Lagoon and fan zones, having fun, snapping selfies, and soaking in the festive atmosphere. International sports icons, investors, and fans came from across the world, including former Chelsea and Ivory Coast football legend Didier Drogba, co-owner of Team Drogba Global Africa, who added a touch of celebrity magic to the weekend.

For First Bank of Nigeria, the event was not just about sports, it was about making history. Acting Group Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, Olayinka Ijabiyi, said sponsoring the E1 Lagos GP reflected the bank’s heritage of innovation and renewal.

READ ALSO: 2024/2025 academic year: NELFUND reopens student loan portal

“Innovation, sustainability, excitement, speed, we are a heritage bank that has been around for 131 years, and for every one of those years, we have constantly renewed ourselves,” Ijabiyi said, adding that “When this opportunity came, who else could bring the first E1 GP to Nigeria but First Bank? We are proud to have presented Lagos and Nigeria to the world.”

At the First Bank Pavilion, visitors enjoyed interactive experiences, lifestyle engagements, and product showcases, while music, fashion, and food added a distinctly Lagos flavour. Families and young professionals mingled with entrepreneurs, all celebrating a fusion of technology, culture, and sustainability, hallmarks of the bank’s brand identity.

“This race is a net-zero emitter,” Ijabiyi added. “We are strong on sustaining the environment and supporting a cleaner, greener future. It’s innovation meeting responsibility.”

The E1 partnership also connects with the bank’s #FirstBankDecemberIssaVybe series, an annual celebration of entertainment and lifestyle that lights up Nigeria’s festive season. “December is the Vybe,” Ijabiyi teased. “This is just a taste of what’s to come-fun, fashion, food, and amazing experiences.”

The finale on Sunday was nothing short of electrifying as Team Brazil claimed victory, with pilots Timmy Hansen and Leva Millere-Hagin steering their electric boat to glory, beating Team Blue Rising and Team Drogba to the podium.

As the sun set over the Lagoon, the waterfront transformed into a sea of lights and cheers, a moment that captured the heart of Lagos: energetic, ambitious, and always ready to lead.

With its sponsorship of the E1 Lagos Grand Prix, First Bank once again proved that it is more than a financial institution, it is a lifestyle brand championing innovation, sustainability, and national pride.

In the words of Latoya Johnson, a Lagosian who attended the event: “I grew up knowing First Bank as the reliable one. Seeing them behind something this big makes me proud. They’re not just banking our money, they’re banking our future.”

From clean energy to cultural celebration, from racing boats to smiling faces, the E1 Lagos GP was a powerful reminder that when innovation meets tradition, the result is pure magic.
