The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, said the fire that engulfed Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island led to the collapse of six buildings.

The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the figure in a statement on Thursday in Lagos.

Oke-Osanyintolu added that 16 other buildings were seriously impacted by the inferno.

He, however, said that the dampening down of the fire continued on day three of the incident.

Oke-Osanyintolu added that the demolition of the self-collapsed buildings to ground zero and carting away of the rubble had begun under his supervision.

Meanwhile, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State had said that Dosunmu Market would be closed indefinitely, and that the government would assist those affected.

The governor said that any property that did not conform to the state’s regulations of construction would be pulled down.

In another development, LASEMA said that the Waterways search team for the victims that plunged into the Lagos lagoon continued.

“No victims found yet,” LASEMA said.

The Ondo State Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani, has warned members of staff to prevent fire outbreaks in their homes and offices before it causes them pain and untold hardship.

Ani gave the warning on Sunday during the sensitisation of staff on Fire Prevention and Safety Training organised to curb incessant fire outbreaks.

The NYSC boss declared that it was worrisome that precious lives perished in some infernos while valuable properties worth several billions of naira were destroyed.

She said that staff should be conscious of humongous investment of the federal government into the provision of capital items in offices but more importantly, staff should protect their lives by taking safety measures seriously.

“When property worth several billions are damaged, government will be forced to use funds meant for other critical needs to rebuild the structure and replace burnt items, but when life is involved, it becomes a disaster that the loved ones of the person affected may not get out of.”

Any said she wanted the members of staff to visualise the multiplier effects fire outbreaks may cause the organisation and the untold hardship it might bring to the workforce.

She therefore appealed to them to follow religiously workplace safety measures.

During the sensitisation and training proper, the Head, Federal Fire Service on Camp, Assistant Superintendent of Fire, Ajulo Ayodele John disclosed that many electrical fire incidents were caused by carelessness.

Ajulo outlined various causes of fire outbreaks to include overloading of electrical appliances, storing of combustible materials, refueling generator while it is working or filling gas at the filing station without putting off the engine.

The Fire Safety Officer admonished the staff to do away with unhealthy attitude that might hamper their official assignment or jeopardise their well-being.

He advised members of staff to routinely follow the daily procedure to avert fire outbreaks at workplace, and that, he said, included switching off all electrical appliances and removal of electrical plugs and sockets from the main source before leaving the office.

The fire officer and his team later went into practical demonstration on how to put off fire in case there were incidents.

The team also demonstrated how to safeguard and protect the lives of fire victims.

The highpoint was the demonstration of fire fighting techniques by some selected members of staff led by the state coordinator.

She demonstrated how to put out fire using blanket.

Participants at a rehearsal for President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration were evacuated from the West Front of the U.S. Capitol on Monday after a fire broke out near the building, according to officials.

With tensions still high in the wake of the January 6 pro-Trump attack on the Capitol, security officers rapidly whisked away the participants, including members of a military band, as a plume of smoke was seen shooting up in the air a few blocks away around 10:30 am local time.

But the blaze apparently was not connected to the inaugural preparations, and the city’s fire department said no injuries were reported.

Law enforcement officials said the fire likely started in a homeless encampment under a highway overpass about five blocks away from the Capitol.

Neither Biden nor vice president-elect Kamala Harris were on site.

The U.S. Secret Service, which is leading security operations for Biden’s Wednesday inauguration, said it ordered the fire-related evacuation “out of an abundance of caution” and that people on the Capitol grounds were told to shelter in place.

“There is no threat to the public,” the agency said in a statement.

The cause of the fire that disrupted the rehearsal was not immediately known.

The precautionary shutdown comes at a tumultuous time in the nation’s capital.

Tens of thousands of National Guard troops have been dispatched to the city ahead of Biden’s inauguration amid warnings from the FBI that armed far-right groups may attempt to pull off another attack on the Capitol.

The National Mall, usually a place for supporters of the new president to gather during the inauguration, has been completely sealed off at least through Thursday, and security personnel erected large steel barriers around Capitol Hill over the weekend, making Washington look like a city at war.

President Donald Trump, who will not attend Biden’s inauguration, has been impeached for inciting the January 6 attack, in which five people died, by telling thousands of supporters to “fight” to stop lawmakers from certifying the 2020 election results during a joint session of Congress at the Capitol.

Goods worth millions of Naira were destroyed as fire gutted over 100 shops in the popular Marian Market in Calabar on Friday.

The fire, which started from one of the shops in the fruit section, spread to other shops.

An eye witness, Mr Ojah Ojah, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, at the scene of the event, said that the fire outbreak started around 8 p.m. on Friday.

“The cause of the fire incident started from one of the shops when electricity was supplied to the area. We saw a spark from one of the shops and before we could long, the fire had extended to other shops.

“We called on the Fire Service but they could not respond on time. It took the intervention of Nigerian Navy fire truck to help in containing the fire,” he said.

One of the victims, Mrs Eme Bassey, 54, said her water melon worth N300,000 including her shop were all destroyed in the fire outbreak.

“Three days ago, I received supply of water melon worth over N500,000 from my major distributor in Makurdi. I usually sell and make payment to him, but this fire outbreak has rendered me hopeless for now.

“I don’t even know where to start because my shop was also burnt to ashes. This is too painful for me to bear under this harsh Covid-19 period,” she said.

Another victim, Mrs Theresa Okon, 48, lamented that the fire outbreak had automatically kept her out of business, adding that the source of her income and business capital had been cut off.

Okon also appealed to the government and relevant agencies, including corporate organisations to come to their aid.

Mr Princewill Ayim, the Director General of Cross River State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, who went for an on-the-spot assessment, sympathised with the affected traders.

Ayim said that preliminary investigations also indicated that the fire outbreak was caused by an electrical fault which spread to other shops.

“We are here to assess the extent of damage and to also document the affected traders with a view to ameliorate their situation, especially at this period of Covid-19 pandemic.

“The state government is very responsive to cases of emergencies like this, I can assure you that something will be done to assist the victims,” he said.

Ayim called on the Nigeria Emergency Management Agency, Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to also assist the victims to bounce back to business.

No life was lost in the inferno.

There was fire outbreak at the headquarters of the Nigeria Postal Services, NIPOST, in Abuja on Wednesday.

Help, however, came on time as men of the Federal Fire Service arrived in good time to save the situation.

The General Manager, Communications, NIPOST, Mr Franklin Alao, confirmed the incident, declaring that there was no cause for alarm.

He stated that the fire outbreak was contained before it could spread.

His words: “This morning at about 8:35am, smoke was noticed coming from the window of Office of Posting Under the Personnel Unit at the second floor of our headquarters.

“The Fire Service was quickly contacted and the officials responded immediately arriving after the fire started.

“The fire was contained just in the only office where it started without spreading to any other part of the adjoining offices.

“Normalcy has indeed been restored.

“There is therefore no cause for alarm over the fire.

“We thank men of the Federal Fire Service who responded promptly and put the fire under control and all other Nigerians.”
