In a statement it issued, FAAN said that there was rather smoke discharge from the Terminal 2 FM-200 fire suppression system.

The statement was issued by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr Henry Agbebire.

According to the agency,  preliminary findings indicated that there was no fire at the terminal.

It said that the smoke observed within the affected area resulted from discharge from the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system.

FAAN, however, said that the reason for activation of the fire suppression system was being investigated.

It said: “Normal operations have since resumed at the terminal, while detailed investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.

“FAAN appreciates the understanding and cooperation of passengers, airlines, airport users and all stakeholders, and reiterates its commitment to the safety and security of all airport operations.”

The authority had, in a statement earlier on Sunday, said there was a fire at the terminal.

The aircraft, with Registration Number 5N-ENR, was operating an Enugu–Benin–Lagos commercial flight when the incident occurred at about 4:00 p.m.

The aircraft overshot the runway and veered into the nearby bush after landing.

That triggered panic among passengers and airport officials.

A member of staff of one of the airlines operating at the airport, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident, saying the aircraft encountered difficulty during landing.

According to the source, the aircraft’s tyres came off while it was landing on the runway.

The source, however, dismissed widespread claims that the aircraft crash-landed, insisting that it skidded off the runway and that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated.

Another airport source said officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, responded promptly to the incident.

“FAAN immediately swung into action and all the passengers were evacuated. No casualty was recorded,” the source said.

The source added that there were 68 passengers on board the aircraft but could not confirm the exact number of crew members at the time of filing this report.

When contacted, the General Manager, Public Affairs of FAAN at the Airport, Mr Francis Oluseyi, declined comment.

Oluseyi said he was not disposed to respond to the incident for now.

The FAAN Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr Henry Agbebire, said in a statement in Lagos that the terminal was shut following the spark in an operational office, which resulted in smoke emission at 2.05 p.m.

Agbebire said that electrical maintenance was ongoing to ensure that all electrical systems would function optimally ahead of the terminal’s reopening.

“All flights that currently operate from Terminal 3 have been diverted to Terminal 2. Passengers are hereby advised accordingly.

“The situation is under control as personnel of the Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Services  promptly responded and contained the incident,” he added.

The announcement is contained in a statement by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr Henry Agbebire, on Sunday in Lagos.

Agbebire said the arrest followed a distress alert after suspicious individuals were sighted behind the airport perimeter, near the Eleyewo community.

He said FAAN’s Aviation Security, Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force and other local security outfits launched a joint search operation.

According to him, some individuals attempted to flee the area during the operation by the joint security team.

“Four suspects were eventually apprehended and handed over to the Police area command for further interrogation,” Agbebire said.

He commended the collaboration among aviation security personnel, the military, police and local security groups.

“The swift response of security agencies, including Amotekun and community vigilantes, led to the successful arrest,” he added.

Agbebire said the incident underscored the need to strengthen airport perimeter protection across the country.

He noted that the federal government, through the Ministry of Aviation, had accelerated modern perimeter fencing and improved security infrastructure at airports.

“Work has already began in phases to ensure FAAN-managed airports are better protected against unlawful access and other security threats,” he said.

FAAN reassured travellers and host communities of its commitment to maintaining safety and security at airport facilities nationwide.

A control tower personnel noticed unusual movement on the runway and alerted security operatives.

The alert prompted a swift response from security teams, leading to the arrest of four suspects near the airport.

Did you miss your flight because of the ongoing Federal Government’s cashless policy in Lagos and Abuja airports’ access gates? If you did, I empathise with you. If you have missed your flight before, you would understand the knock-on stress this has on your psyche. A missed flight automatically creates a domino effect on your life. Because you have missed your flight, you have also missed a scheduled meeting. You have broken a promise.

Meanwhile, the other party would view you as an irresponsible person who lacks the character to honour an appointment. Then your day suddenly turned around 360 degrees. First, some retrospection. Did you miss the flight because you overslept? No. If it were so, you would have quietly taken the blame and wallowed in your stew. A third party caused it.

On the one hand

Recently, this scenario happened when thousands of passengers failed to make it through the airports’ access gates. These passengers lacked the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) dedicated payment card. Not having a dedicated payment card triggered massive gridlock. Missed flights. Sweats. Widespread frustration among travellers.

On the other hand

The cashless policy should not have led to a fever or caused passengers to abandon vehicles at the airport entrances. There were even some delayed flights because passengers did not arrive on time. This is not what the cashless policy was designed for; something was amiss.

In the long term

Media reports said that the federal airports authority would commence electronic payments at its revenue points – access gates, car parks, VIP lounges, and protocol services – from September 2025. Due to the cashless policy at the airports, vehicles passing through the tollgate endured some delays. The car owners could not obtain the ‘gold’ card. After obtaining the card, airport users must register the card. Fund it. Scan it. This must happen at the entry points.

In the first instance, this is a recipe for chaos. For context, the Lagos airport is Nigeria’s busiest airport. It handles 10,000 passengers daily. Six months is not enough to move 10,000 passengers from cash payment to a cashless policy. Cash payment culture has been ongoing at our airports since independence. Six months is too short to change a culture. Besides, a triple play would have hindered the chaos. The triple play: Accept cash. ATM card. FAAN card. This would have prevented the cashless policy from becoming a classless problem.

Why this matters

Technology need not cause chaos. It should not lead to missed flights and agitated passengers. Embracing existing payment cards or the triple play scenario would have prevented the ugly situation we experienced at the Lagos airport recently.

In the short term

At the Munich Airport, you cannot miss your flight. It was the first airport in Europe to introduce a ‘’Smart Checkout’’ system. You scan and pay for items without waiting in line.

Mr Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, disclosed this after the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, at the State House, Abuja.

He noted that the policy had caused severe congestion and hardship for travellers, particularly at Lagos and Abuja airports.

According to him, the cashless system was introduced to curb corruption and enhance transparency in revenue collection.

“The idea of introducing a cashless system was to eliminate corruption at the airports.

“However, with the introduction of the system, it created a lot of gridlock and Nigerians have been suffering because of the delays,”

He said the president directed an immediate return to the previous payment arrangement pending improvements.

“Mr President directed that we should suspend the present system because it creates a lot of gridlock.

“He said we should go back to status quo and then perfect the system properly.”

Keyamo added that the president directed that the review of the platform be carried out expeditiously.

“The president said we should engage the private sector and develop an electronic system that will collect the money seamlessly without causing delays,” he said.

The minister assured that consultations would continue with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria on next steps.

FAAN began implementing the cashless policy on March 1.

The directive barred cash payments at airport toll gates, requiring motorists to use prepaid access cards or electronic channels.

However, the development resulted in gridlock, with some passengers missing flights due to delays at toll points.

FAAN management released the advisory in a statement to journalists on Saturday in Lagos.

“As a result of these developments, flights scheduled to Middle-East destinations from Nigerian airports, including Emirates and Qatar Airways, have been cancelled or delayed.

“Passengers affected by these disruptions are strongly advised to contact their respective airlines directly for up-to-date information on flight status, rebooking options and further guidance.

“FAAN continues to monitor the situation in collaboration with relevant aviation authorities and airline operators and will provide updates as necessary,” it stated.

The authority expressed regret over the inconvenience and thanked travellers for their understanding and cooperation.

The General Civil Aviation Authority earlier announced a temporary partial closure of the United Arab Emirates airspace.

Regional reports said the move was a precautionary step to safeguard the UAE’s territory amid challenging security developments.

The exceptional measure was taken to ensure the safety of flights, passengers and aircrew across the UAE.

Managing Director, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, told journalists on Monday there were no fatalities, but six people sustained injuries during the incident.

She said three international flights were diverted, including those operated by Emirates, British Airways and Lufthansa.

According to Kuku, “Some of our operations were affected; however, they will be back up and running in the next half an hour.”

She said the immediate priority was containing the fire, while investigations into the cause were ongoing.

“What is important is that we activated our emergency procedures and evacuated everyone with no fatalities due to coordinated efforts by all agencies,” she said.

Kuku said the airport’s Emergency Operations Centre had been activated, led by the airport manager as chief safety and security officer.

“He is taking charge. There is a standard procedure we follow when it comes to emergencies,” she added.

She noted that coordination among agencies followed established protocols, with support from relevant state authorities where necessary.

On renovation works, Kuku said projects were ongoing within the airport, but not in the area where the fire reportedly began.

“In the area we believe the fire started, nothing was happening at the time. People were only moving items out.

“The fire started from the ground floor, from our investigations so far. We are awaiting confirmation and cannot say more at this time,” she said.

She confirmed the fire escalated to the roof, adding that police and helicopters supported rescue operations swiftly.

“We have professionals, including civil and structural engineers, to assess the building’s integrity and determine the next steps,” she said.

Kuku said most departures and arrivals had been moved, with departures largely relocated to Terminal 2.

She added that four airlines were scheduled to move into the temporary terminal, which she described as ready for use.

“In terms of the full operations affected, I would say not a lot,” she said, adding that the temporary terminal would be active within days.

Addressing lingering smoke, Kuku assured passengers that firefighters would remain on ground as a precaution.

She said: “If you have friends or family on the diverted flights, British Airways went to Abuja, Lufthansa to Malabo, and Emirates was also diverted.

“However, for travelling passengers, operations will resume within half an hour. It is fine to come to the airport for flights in the coming hours or days.”

The first flight departed at about 7.20 p.m. after the airspace reopened, though smoke was still visible at the time of filing this report.

There was heavy smoke and rowdiness at the terminal earlier in the day – Monday.

Emergency response operations were ongoing at the time as FAAN firefighting teams continued efforts to fully contain and curtail the fire, while the orderly evacuation of passengers and airport personnel were being done.

FAAN has said that to strengthen response efforts, the authority had activated mutual aid arrangements and called for reinforcements from the Lagos State Government, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, and other relevant emergency agencies.
