The Police Command in Rivers has arrested three suspected kidnappers and rescued one victim, following a major operation in the state.

Spokesperson of the command, ASP Blessing Agebe, made this known to journalists in Port Harcourt on Saturday.

He said the suspects were allegedly linked to the abduction of one Mr. Chukwudekwu Emmanuel, still in captivity.

Emmanuel, a resident of Lagos, was reportedly abducted on February 17 in Etche local government area, Rivers, prompting a statewide call for his rescue.

According to the spokesperson, the suspects were apprehended on Tuesday by police operatives stationed in Emohua.

“Our operatives arrested the three suspects, aided by technology-driven strategies. They are suspected to be involved in the abduction of Emmanual,” she said.

She added the suspects were apprehended while attempting to kidnap another victim, Mr Chisom George, who had been lured from Anambra under the guise of a job offer.

“They deceitfully invited George from Anambra State under the pretext of an interior decoration job. They, however, held him hostage after his arrival.

“George was rescued during the operation by police operatives,” she added.

Agabe said that the suspects specialised in luring innocent victims through social media platforms, including Whatsapp, Facebook, X, and Tinder.

According to her, the suspects used images of reputable personalities to gain trust and deceive unsuspecting victims.

The spokesperson said that during interrogation, the suspects allegedly confessed to multiple kidnappings across different states in the country.

She also listed other victims allegedly kidnapped by the syndicate from Enugu and Lagos states respectively.

“The command has launched a manhunt to arrest the fleeing gang leader and other members of the syndicate, to bring them to justice,” she said.

Agabe said the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Olugbenga Adepoju, had reaffirmed his commitment to protecting lives and property in the state.

He advised members of the public to exercise caution while interacting online, and to also verify identities before meeting strangers.

He consequently urged residents to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.

Energy experts have criticised recent recommendations by the World Bank urging Nigeria to deepen fuel importation and fully liberalise its downstream petroleum sector.

They warned that the advice was ill‑timed, economically regressive and in direct violation of the Petroleum Industry Act, PIA.

An energy economist and professor, Ken Ife, faulted the position during a televised interview on Nigeria’s economic outlook, noting that while parts of the World Bank’s latest Nigeria Development Update were analytically sound, its prescription on fuel importation threatens Nigeria’s strategic push for energy independence and local value addition.

“You cannot come to a country that is struggling, and which has just developed a vision of economic self‑reliance and then advise it to reverse course and return to fuel importation,” Ife said. “That kind of recommendation undermines everything Nigeria is trying to achieve.”

He stressed that the advice directly contradicts the Petroleum Industry Act, which mandates priority supply of domestic crude to local refiners under the Domestic Crude Obligation framework.

“The law is very clear. Domestic refining must come first. Advising Nigeria to abandon that path is not just against government policy; it is a clear violation of the PIA,” Ife stated.

The economist warned that increased fuel importation would leave Nigeria more vulnerable to global supply disruptions, accelerate foreign exchange depletion and discourage ongoing investments in local refining, particularly at a time when private sector participation is expanding capacity.

“We are on track to build refining capacity that will exceed domestic demand and position Nigeria as an energy exporter. How can anyone credibly suggest that we abandon this progress and return to reckless import dependence?” he asked.

Ife also questioned the empirical basis of the World Bank’s fuel import recommendation, describing it as an unsupported addition to an otherwise rigorous report.

“This conclusion was strangely parachuted into what was largely a strong analysis. There is no evidence supporting a return to imports at a time when major refining countries are restricting exports,” he said.

While acknowledging the World Bank’s accurate assessment of Nigeria’s macroeconomic indicators, including GDP growth projections and sectoral performance, Ife cautioned that its fuel policy stance could worsen rather than improve economic conditions.

Echoing similar concerns, another energy expert, Kelvin Emmanuel, also criticised the World Bank’s position, describing it as flawed and disconnected from prevailing market realities.

Speaking during a televised interview, Emmanuel disclosed that the World Bank had reportedly withdrawn the contested Nigeria Development Update from its website.

“The World Bank has retracted the report. If you check the World Bank Nigeria website, you will see that the document has been taken down,” he said.

Emmanuel dismissed claims that imported petrol could be cheaper than locally refined fuel, insisting that current global market conditions make such assumptions unrealistic.

“There is no marketer today that can land petrol into Nigeria at less than ₦1,759 per litre when you factor in freight, insurance and supply chain risks,” he said.

He explained that rising crude oil prices—driven largely by tensions in the Middle East, have fundamentally altered pricing dynamics, noting that while futures prices hover around $100 per barrel, spot prices are significantly higher.

“Dated Brent is trading at about $144 per barrel, which translates to roughly ₦1,249 per litre before distribution and other costs,” Emmanuel stated.

According to him, any suggestion that imported fuel is cheaper could only be explained by quality compromises.

“The only way imported petrol can appear cheaper is if standards are compromised, which, historically, has been the case,” he said.

Emmanuel also rejected claims that fuel prices in Nigeria are excessively high, noting that petrol remains cheaper domestically than in neighbouring African countries.

“There is nowhere in the region where petrol is sold as cheaply as it is in Nigeria,” he said.

On inflation and the rising cost of living, Emmanuel argued that Nigeria’s challenges stem from inconsistent enforcement of domestic supply frameworks rather than resource scarcity.

“Fuel price pressures in Nigeria are largely contrived. If local refiners receive crude supply as stipulated by law, prices will stabilise and volatility will reduce,” he explained.

He further criticised the World Bank’s advocacy for expanded social safety nets funded through borrowing, warning that such measures conflicted with Nigeria’s fiscal responsibility laws.

“Social safety nets are important, but you do not borrow money to share. Borrowing is meant for capital projects and human development, not consumption. If support is needed, it should come in the form of grants, not loans,” he said.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, continued their offensive action against drug syndicates in a nationwide crackdown with the dismantling of an opioids cartel in an intelligence-led operation.

During the exercise, a baron Onyekachi Pius Nwanagu, and five members of his gang were arrested with illicit substances worth over N6.7 billion recovered from their secret warehouse in a residential estate in Lagos.

Following credible intelligence that the drug trafficking organisation was about distributing over 7.2 million pills of tramadol 225mg and 526,200 bottles (52.6 million mls) of codeine syrup warehoused in a residential compound located at 23 Sunny Billa East Street, Bucknor, Isheri area of Isolo, Lagos State, ahead of the Christmas festive season, officers of a Special Operations Unit of NDLEA led a well coordinated operation between Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th November 2025 to round up members of the syndicate and dismantle their criminal network.

Two members of the DTO – Egbo Innocent Udalor and Chukwe Emmanuel were trailed and arrested at Apple Junction, Festac area of Lagos, on Wednesday 19th November while conveying 300 cartons of opioids in a truck.

A follow up operation to the syndicate’s warehouse at Sunny Billa East Street, Bucknor the following day Thursday 20th November led to the arrest of Onyekachi Nwanagu and other members of his syndicate including Nwoye Sunday Ali; Nnacho Ogochukwu; and Oraghalia Chukwuebuka Philip.

In all, a total of 7,272,000 pills of tramadol 225mg worth N3,960,000,000, and 53 million mills of codeine syrup valued at over N2,762,550,000, bringing the combined value of the seized drugs to N6,722,550,000.00 only in street value were recovered and moved out of the estate in eleven trucks to NDLEA’s central exhibit complex in Lagos.

While commending the Commander and operatives of the Special Operations Unit as well as those of Strike Force Unit involved in the dismantling of the syndicate, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd) praised the officers’ professionalism and dedication, describing the breakthrough as a major blow to the cartels preying on Nigeria’s youth.

“This is not just an arrest; it is a clear and unambiguous statement. The seizure of this colossal volume of illicit drugs, which could have fueled addiction, crime, and insecurity across our nation, represents a victory for the Nigerian people and a confirmation of our unwavering commitment to the mandate given to us by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Marwa stated.

He emphasized that the agency’s focus remains squarely on the kingpins and financiers of the illicit drug trade.

“The days when drug barons thought they were untouchable are over. The arrest of this drug baron and his criminal cohorts, following an intensive intelligence operation, serves as a stark reminder that the long arm of the law will eventually catch up with every merchant of death, no matter how high or deeply concealed they think they are.”

Lagos State’s long-anticipated inland waterways transportation project being developed in partnership with the European Union has transited from the blueprint to a reality.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday, formally launched the EUR 410 million waterways infrastructure project aimed at developing rapid transportation options that will address Lagosians’ mobility needs.

The project, divided into two components, will be implemented by the Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, with the second component expected to be completed by 2030.

Lagos secured the funding for the project via the Global Gateway Initiative, the French Development Agency, AFD, the European Union, EU, and the European Investment Bank, EIB, which earmarked a subsidised loan of EUR 360 million for the project.

The first component of the project covers channelisation, marking and dredging of 140km of ferry routes from which Lagos will be developing 15 priority ferry routes, including constructing high-quality infrastructure and facilities.

The entire Inland Waterways Transport infrastructure comprises 25 ferry terminals and jetties with electric charging facilities to power e-vessels.

There will be onshore depots for routine vessel maintenance, while land connections, including road surfacing, will be developed for other transport services connecting to ferry terminals.

Sanwo-Olu described the Omi-Eko launch as “historic”, noting that the event was not just an unveiling ceremony but a “bold statement” reaffirming Lagos’ frontline leadership in delivering a sustainable integrated water transportation ecosystem.

The governor said exploring the full range of waterways transportation was a critical priority in his administration’s THEMES+ Agenda to transform mobility in the metropolis.

READ ALSO: Presidential prerogative of mercy still undergoing review –Fagbemi

He said: “Every Lagosian knows the frustration of traffic. But a few will remember that Lagos began as a network of islands, knitted together by water. Long before bridges connected city, boats carried dreams, goods, and people across the lagoons. This water body nourishes us, shapes the state’s identity and now, it will carry us into the future.

“The Omi-Eko project is a comprehensive, future-oriented blueprint for sustainable mobility in Lagos. It merges technology, environmental stewardship and smart design to create waterways that are not just navigated, but optimised. This is the kind of innovative projects cities around the world are building to confront the twin challenges of urban population growth and climate change. Lagos is not waiting to catch up, we are setting the pace.”

The project, it was said, would reduce the negative impact of transport on health, while also reinforcing the state’s ability to fight climate change. It would promote inclusive, more resilient means of mobility.

The investment would bring decarbonised transportation in Lagos, reducing CO2 emissions by 41,000 tonnes yearly.

It is expected to take 25,000 passengers yearly, saving travel time by three hours on each trip.

Sanwo-Olu said the investment’s objective was to make transportation through water seamless, reduce carbon footprint, the air cleaner and transform waterways from barriers of separation into corridors of opportunity.

The governor said: “The launch of this project is more than a ceremonial curtain pull. It is a covenant with our people, our planet, and with future generations. With Omi-Eko, we are lifting not only boats but lives, businesses, and communities. We are signaling that Lagos is ready to lead Africa’s urban transition by this bold, sustainable, and inclusive investment.”

Former governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, who created LASWA in 2008, graced the ceremony to witness the historic project.

The former Works and Housing Minister hailed the Sanwo-Olu administration for nurturing the agency to a viable global entity.

Fashola said the Omi-Eko project would further expand the scope of the state’s integrated transportation network, expressing optimism that the project would not stall, given the commitment of the European partners.

Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Seun Osiyemi, said the project would unlock the full potential of Lagos inland waterways, bringing the final piece of the State’s Integrated Multimodal Transportation System to life.

“Omi-Eko aligns with broader Lagos Transport Policy, which promotes sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation, while ensuring that transport solutions serve the people while protecting the environment. The project is not just about ferry operations; it is about empowering communities, creating jobs, easing congestion, and reducing our carbon footprint.”

Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy, Mr. Damilola Emmanuel, who doubles as LASWA’s head, noted that the Omi-Eko project was no longer a dream, but a reality that would be changing the course of transportation in Lagos.

He said the 70 hybrid electric ferries that would be deployed after the completion of the project would reduce pollutants’ emissions and boost clean mobility.

The LASWA boss said 20 existing jetties would be upgraded with modern terminals across 15 major water routes.

Emmanuel said: “In the first phase, there will be dredging and channelisation of 15 ferry routes for safer and faster transport. Part of the benefits include technology transfer and capacity development for key agencies in the waterways, especially LASWA.

“There will be funding for the informal boat sector under our Vessel Industry. This is how we build a water-based economy that works for all — from operators to passengers, from private investors to our citizens.“

French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jean-Noel Barrot, said the project received complete support from EU partners, given the untapped opportunities in Lagos waterways.

The envoy said the Omi-Eko project represented the “best possible” example of what partnership could achieve for the benefit of the people, pointing out that the development was part of the success of the bilateral cooperation reached during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent visit to the French President Emmanuel Macron.

The EU Ambassador in Nigeria, Mr. Gautier Mignot, noted the partnership was an historical milestone for Lagos and EU member states, stressing that the investment would enhance life quality.

“This investment supports development of 12 strategic waterways corridors to enhance secure and efficient sustainable transport networks. Four of these corridors are located in West Africa. We are proud to be part of this project which showcases all the aspects of global gateway development,” Mignot said.

The Society for Peace Studies and Practice, SPSP, has applauded Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State over several initiatives of his administration for the promotion of peace.

The Lagos State branch of the society gave the commendation on the occasion of the World Peace Day in a statement issued by its chairman, Richard Adeyinka Emmanuel, and secretary, Dr. Hassan Biodun Suleiman.

The SPSP acknowledged the efforts of the government of Governor Sanwo-Olu to improve state peace listing some of the initiatives which it described as commendable.

Listing some of the initiative of the government, the society said: “In order to increase the Nigeria Police Force’s effectiveness in fighting crime and safeguarding the lives and property of all Lagos residents, Governor Sanwo-Olu has equipped the force with 260 vehicles and other security equipment, including bulletproof jackets, body-worn cameras, and helmets, within the past year.

“To combat crime in the state’s troubled areas, especially Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Lekki, the state government hired 1,000 policemen for the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps to beef up security intelligence for prompt action. The criminal justice system restructured for efficiency through the introduction of technology with the Lagos Criminal Information System (LCIS).”

Adherents of both the Christian and Islamic faith forged a common ground during the popular monthly interview discourse, Boiling Point Arena, which dissected the controversy over burial traditions of Yoruba monarchs.

Both Pastor Femi Emmanuel, a popular preacher, and Sheikh Abdur-Rahman Ahmad, notable Islamic cleric, formed a consensus that all cultural practices shrouded in secrecy, barbarism and fetishness must be immediately halted by traditional rulers in Yorubaland, urging them to embrace modernity.

There was, however, heated argument by notable Ifa Priest and Associate Professor of African Indigenous knowledge at the University of Ibadan, Dr Obafemi Jegede, who stoutly defended all the myths and sacredness surrounding Yoruba traditional practices as exaggerated.

He said they were “cooked up” stories targeted at drawing them away from their original roots.

In the viewpoints of Pastor Emmanuel and Sheikh Ahmad, both Christianity and Islam are not anti-culture but whatever is not transparent and offensive to decency and human reasoning like offering sacrifices and rituals must be done away with.

The trio of Pastor Emmanuel, Sheikh Ahmad and Dr Jegede spoke as discussants on the current affairs programme, hosted by a media professional, Dr Ayo Arowojolu.

Transmitted via Zoom, the programme was broadcast live on six radio stations across Lagos, Ogun and Delta States – WASH FM, Sweet FM, Roots FM, Eri-Nbe FM, Women Radio FM and Kruzz FM as well as a cable television, NSTV, on GoTV channel 316.

The topic of discourse for the 34th edition of the programme was: “Secrecy vs Transparency: The Great Battle Over Yoruba Monarchs’ Burial Traditions and The Future of Yoruba Culture.”

The event was chaired by a frontline traditional ruler, the Olówu of Owu Kingdom, Prof Saka Matemilola, who also defended his Islamic faith, saying “I was not chosen by Ifa”.

READ ALSO: Dangote refinery reduces price of petrol

First to fire the salvo was Pastor Emmanuel who is the Presiding Pastor of Living Spring Church International, warned that something urgent must be done by leaders of thought in Yorubaland so that the rich culture and tradition of the people should not go into extinction.

His words: “Culture and tradition are very important. A people without a culture is a lost race. Culture give identity to people. It preserves their heritage and also guide their beliefs. It also foster unity among the people. But, culture should be appreciated and preserved.

“Even in the bible especially in the Old Testament, we talk about the Jewish culture. Many of them, they still preserve and practice. And of course, many they have also dropped.

“Culture can go into extinction if not regularly reviewed. Nigerians have inquisitive mind. Life itself is dynamic, which means things keep changing with the changing time. Life is dynamic, and it’s not static. For a people’s culture not to go into extinction, like the Yoruba cultural tradition seems to be doing. It must be ed to review in line with the current realities. It must be subjected to research, review, documentation and improvement.

“You will agree with me that many aspect of our culture and tradition are shrouded in secrecy, in mysticism, in superstition, and even taboos, especially that of Obaship enthronement.

“Faith is important. You must draw a line between tradition and faith. It’s a matter of conscience. A born-again child of God who is in the line of royalty should feel free to go into Obaship but all the cards must be put on the table. And all those secret things, if they are not acceptable to his conscience, he should be able to walk away. Must also know where there is a contradiction and draw a line between the culture, his faith and his conscience.”

Sheikh Abdur-Rahman, for his part, amplified almost same viewpoints of Pastor Emmanuel and warned traditionalists not to screen out people from kingship on the basis of their faith.

Sheikh Ahmad said: “I do not see essentially a fundamental contradiction between culture and Islam. Islam is not anti-culture. It accepts culture and tradition on its own terms. Islam has a filter through which it assesses compatibility and compliance to the extent that Islam views cultures as essentially part of human society and human nature.

“But one thing that is key is that culture is evolving, and it is dynamic. The Yoruba culture is dynamic, and any culture that refuses to adapt to changing times will die and expire.

“There is a new trend that traditionalists now do and they are the ones causing embarrassment to Yorubas. They need to be told that you cannot restrict movement of people in this modern time. You cannot impose curfew on a given area. Only the government can impose curfew. They will say some people should not go out after 10pm until 6am. All This restriction of movement must be reviewed. It is not good for the nation. It is not good for diversity. It’s not good for peaceful coexistence, and it is time for us to sit down and agree on this.

“Through the adherents of different religions, we can find humanity. We can tolerate one another. Nobody can legislate particular religion out of existence. And, for us to continue to coexist, we must not only tolerate. You must go beyond tolerating one another. We must accredit one another. This is where the wisdom is. This is where the future is.

“I want to emphasize that for us to have a peaceful and harmonious Yoruba land, we must continue to allow individual convictions that do not harm the society in any way. What is the harm that the right of a king to be buried according to his religious conviction? What harm does it do to society? What harm does it do to the community? This is not what is important.”

In contrast, Dr Jegede who is an expert in Ifa, added an interesting dimension to the debate when he said: “the reasons why many kings want to play it the Christian or Muslim way, once enthroned, is because they want to go to heaven and I say very clearly, there’s no heaven that is better than this earth where we are. This is the best place in all the planets, in all the universe”.

Jegede tasked Yoruba religionists to “give great credits to our forebears who invented all the traditional and cultural practices now being tagged as fetish,” arguing that they were well thought out in the overriding interest of peace in the land.

The seeming gradual and systemic erosion of Yoruba cultural identity, particularly stemming from the aftermath of the transition of the Awujale of Ijebu-land, Oba Sikiru Adetona, is the main issue on the front burner on the popular monthly interview discourse, Boiling Point Arena.

Sunday August 10, 2025 is the D-Day for the 34th edition of the global online discourse commencing from 8 p.m. over a two-hour duration.

To unmask all the angles germane to the ostensibly volatile issue are two of Nigeria’s bright minds from two divergent planks, an Ifa Priest and erstwhile Vice-Chancellor Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Prof. Wande Abimbola, and popular preacher, Pastor Femi Emmanuel, who is a one-time Deputy Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly.

The once-in-a-month current affairs programme is transmitted via Zoom and broadcast live on six radio stations across Lagos, Ogun and Delta states as well as a cable television, NSTV on GoTV channel 316

With an incredibly large online followership and wide listenership base, Boiling Point Arena is hosted by a media professional and public relations strategist, Dr. Ayo Arowojolu.

Both Prof. Wande Abimbola and Pastor Femi Emmanuel are to dissect the dynamism of tradition and culture as well as the imperative of preservation of cultural ethos and practices which define the Yoruba people.

The duo will pointedly situate the new trend of burying monarchs based on their spiritual leanings while alive as to whether it’s an evolution of tradition or outright desecration of culture.

The discussants are to also interrogate all the issues involved within the context of tradition, Law, government influence and religion.

The topic of discourse is: “Secrecy Vs Transparency: The Great Battle Over Yoruba Monarchs’ Burial Traditions and the Future of Yoruba Culture.”

Prof. Abimbola holds the traditional title of Awise Gbogbo Agbaye, a title conferred on him by the then Ọọni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade in 1981 on the recommendation of a conclave of West African Babalawos.

For his part, Pastor Emmanuel is the General Overseer of Living Spring Church International, a sprawling church with branches all over the country and overseas. He recently clocked 70.

Foremost traditional ruler, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Prof Saka Matemilola is the Keynote Speaker and Chair to herald the discourse.

A well-publicized discourse, Boiling Point Arena will be broadcast live on WASH 94.9FM, Sweet 107.1FM, Roots 97.1FM, Erimbe 94.7FM, Women Radio 91.7FM and Kruzz 92.9FM.

Boiling Point is a news and general interest group comprising eminent personalities including over 300 professors, media professionals, technocrats, industry leaders, high court justices, traditional rulers, security top shots, and several others.
