Shooting Stars Sports Club, 3SC, of Ibadan on Sunday ended the unbeaten run of El-Kanemi Warriors Football Club of Maiduguri in the ongoing 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL.

In their Match Day 11 fixture at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, the Shooting Stars dominated the game’s early proceedings.

But they were prevented from scoring by the visiting goalkeeper until Samuel Ayanrinde headed in Monday Gideon’s pullout in the 26th minute.

The Oluyole Warriors doubled their lead through Aliyu Abubakar’s 37th minute goal to make it an evening of back-slappings for the hosts who have had difficulties scoring goals so far.

Substitute Mustapha Adams extended their lead in the 61st minute of the game.

The win took the hosts to 10th place on the NPFL log from 15th, with 15 points from 11 matches.

Gbenga Ogunbote, the club’s head coach, later told newsmen during the post-match news conference that the victory would enhance his players’ confidence.

He went on to add that the recent return of some of the club’s players who went abroad for trials would be a blessing to the team’s aspirations.

“It will make the team’s defence line to be more solid,” the coach said.

Speaking also, Aliyu Zubairu, the head coach of El-Kanemi Warriors, lamented that his team played below their standard.

“I cannot attribute our low performance to any reason, because winning or losing is normal in football.

“But I must say that we have not been moved or flattered by our unbeaten status until today because it did not change anything,” he said.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a disaster relief fund Monday in Maiduguri, Borno State, to assist Nigerian citizens impacted by floods and other disasters.

He said the relief fund was already expedient as the climate became more unpredictable and many places in the country are vulnerable to its vagaries.

President Tinubu announced this at the Borno Government House when he visited the state to sympathise with the government and people over the recent flooding from Alau Dam.

He urged the private sector to contribute to the fund.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who accompanied the president on the visit, said the National Assembly would collaborate with the executive to establish the Fund.

Tinubu visited the Shehu of Borno, an Internally Displaced Persons camp at the Government Secondary School in Maiduguri and had a drive-through one of the areas affected by the disaster.

President Tinubu said: “After my visit to the Shehu of Borno and the IDP camp, I have been reflecting on how to tackle this kind of disaster and the effects of climate change.

“There must be a disaster relief fund. I will invite the private sector to team up with us and help rebuild the affected areas.

“If we take a small percentage from FAAC and put it as disaster relief fund, which will include all of you, we will be activating and strengthening our sense of belonging,” he said.

The president thanked Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State, who is also Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum; Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed; Sokoto State Governor, Ahmad Aliyu; and Kogi State governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo; and other governors who looked beyond party lines to bear the burdens of others.

He said that Nigeria’s diversity should spur prosperity.

The president extended his sympathy to the government, the people of Yobe State, and all the states affected by flooding and pledged his government’s continued support for victims of natural disasters.

“For all the people of Yobe State, I sympathise with you. We will create an outstanding programme for Nigeria to recover from this calamity. We will build our nation together,” the president assured.

The president commended the Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Zulum, for prompt intervention and the Theatre Command of the Nigerian military for the evacuation that saved many lives.

“I am glad that Prof. Zulum has been a very active governor. Let me assure you that we will be with you, Borno State and share the burden.

“This disaster was a natural one. It was not the making of anybody. We cannot pass the blame. We pray that Almighty Allah will receive the souls of the departed and grant them eternal rest.

“May God also overlook their shortcomings and misdeeds on earth,” he added.

President Tinubu commended all the ministries, agencies, and security outfits, particularly the military, involved in evacuation and relief and recognised the international organisations working in the state.

The governor of Borno State thanked the president for the visit and commended the prompt intervention of federal government agencies, particularly NEMA and the military’s theatre command, in evacuating stranded victims.

At the palace, the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba El-Kanemi, thanked the president for the honour of visiting the state after the Vice President, Sen. Kashim Shettima, had earlier represented him.

The Shehu of Borno urged the president to investigate the cause of the Alua dam collapse and overflow into the town to prevent a recurrence.

Remo Stars Football Club of Ikenne on Sunday at Rabat in Morocco crashed out of the 2024/2025 African Champions League in the competition’s first preliminary round.

The 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, runners-up crashed out after losing 2-3 aggregate to Moroccan side AS FAR Rabat.

Remo Stars lost 0-2 on the night at the Stade Prince Moulay El Hassan in Rabat.

The Nigerian side had won the first leg fixture on August 18 in Ikenne 2-1, but they could not withstand the Moroccans’ offensive blitz in the second leg game.

Two second half goals did the job for the hosts, with Joel Beya who scored their lone goal in Ikenne opening scores in the 53rd minute.

With about 12 minutes left and Remo Stars holding out, a penalty kick was awarded to the home side and El Amine Zouhzouh made no mistake from the spot.

Remo Stars loss meant two of Nigeria’s representatives in club football on the continent have crashed out just one round into their respective competitions.

On Saturday, El-Kanemi Warriors Football Club of Maiduguri had been eliminated from the African Confederation Cup competition’s first preliminary round after a 2-3 aggregate loss.

Nigeria now has only one club each in the two continental competitions.

Enyimba International FC of Aba had drawn bye in the opening round into the second preliminary round of the African Confederation Cup competition.

Rangers International FC of Enugu had on Friday advanced into the second preliminary round of the African Champions League competition, after a 2-1 aggregate victory in the opening round.

President Bola Tinubu, in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Monday, expressed his condolences once again to the families of Nigerians who lost their lives in the recent and sad bombing mishap in Tudun Biri, Kaduna State.

He said most of the victims tragically lost their lives while reciting the Shadada as they observed maulud nabiy, a central statement of faith for practising Muslims.

“They were Nigerians of profound faith and in the moment of the tragedy, they were reciting the Shadada. God Almighty comfort their families as their nation grieves their passage into glory. May their souls rest in eternal peace,” the president prayed.

Speaking at the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi, the president pledged that the federal government would continue to do all within its powers to provide support and care to the families of all Nigerians affected by the remnants of insecurity in parts of Borno State.

“This is my most sacred responsibility and the trajectory of the larger effort shown by the ratio of victory over defeat has been sliding well in our favour since the new administration has resumed office. We are not satisfied yet. We are not satisfied until we reach the end of insecurity in Nigeria,” the president declared.

The president declared that under his watch, security issues would remain a top priority, but not limited only to battlefield concerns.

“We will provide better amenities and benefits to our gallant armed forces and their families. We are committed to this and this is factored into the 2024 budget. We will ensure that our administration reflects the grateful heart of the Nigerian people in the way we treat those who make the ultimate sacrifices on our behalf,” the president affirmed.

Under President Tinubu’s leadership, the Office of the National Security Adviser has worked diligently to connect all branches of the nation’s security architecture by closely coordinating missions and enhancing inter-agency intelligence sharing at all levels.

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Zulum acknowledged the steady improvement in collaboration between the security agencies and the Borno State government.

READ ALSO: ECOWAS to activate standby force on counter-terrorism, speaks on Niger

“We have seen the close working relationship between our state and the security agencies. The results are speaking for themselves. We remain committed to the achievement of the Renewed Hope Agenda in the fight against insecurity anywhere it exists in Nigeria. We thank you for your leadership, Mr. President. We will continue to give all required support to the Nigerian Armed Forces,” Governor Zulum said.

On his part, the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Al-Amin El-Kanemi urged the president to deliver his infrastructural interventions to areas that had been hard hit by insurgency over the years.

“We seek the revival of the Lake Chad Commission to provide succour to the large communities in the Lake Chad’s surrounding areas. We seek power projects and job creation initiatives for our unemployed youths. Governor Zulum has been performing beyond what is humanly possible but his resources are limited. Please assist him,” the Shehu of Borno stated.

Commending the Shehu of Borno for supporting the government of Borno State and the federal government in maintaining peace and stability in the region, President Tinubu promised to enhance the active involvement of traditional institutions in ensuring stability at the grassroots level across the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday toured the ruins of Maiduguri Monday Market destroyed by fire recently, commiserating with the government and people of the state on the unfortunate incident.

The president was also at the palace of the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar El-Kanemi, to register his profound condolences to indigenes of the state who lost property and means of livelihood in the disaster.

The president visited the market, still smouldering five days after, with Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, Vice President-elect Kashim Shettima, members of the Federal Executive Council and some eminent citizens of the state.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Farouq, told the president that assessment on the level of damage was still ongoing.

She announced that the federal government had provided immediate relief materials to the victims of the fire incident, including 20,000 bags of rice, 20,000 bags of maize and condiments.

The minister pledged that the ministry, in collaboration with the Borno State government, would provide building materials to rebuild the market.

“After the assessment, the ministry will submit a full report to Mr President to seek special intervention,” she said.

Prof Zulum said the market, which was built in the 1970s, with no fewer than 20,000 beneficiaries was completely destroyed by the fire.

Acknowledging the support by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, he said the state government had provided an immediate support of N1 billion.

“Even the N1 billion, if the traders share N50,000 each, I do not think that will be enough for them,” he said.

The chairman of the market association, Awaji Bukar, expressed deep appreciation to the president for the visit, appealing for more support from the federal government.

Earlier at the palace of the Shehu of Borno, President Buhari said he was also in the state to commission projects executed by the Prof Zulum-led administration.

“I am delighted to be here with the Shehu and the good people of Borno State, to commiserate with you on the unfortunate Monday Market fire incident.

“I’m pleased to be back to commission projects and be part of the unstoppable development drive of this great state.

“I’m equally happy that the state continues to strive for the normalization of its affairs following the enormous successes achieved in tackling the problem of security that had reached worrying heights in the past.

“I like to put on record my deep and sincere appreciation of the love and support of the people of Borno State. I don’t take this for granted.

“May Allah increase His blessings upon the Shehu and his people. God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,’’ he wrote in the Visitor’s notebook.

The Shehu of Borno thanked the president for overseeing the return of peace and normalcy to the state.

Lauding the improved security situation in the state, Alhaji El-Kanemi declared that “no single local government area in the state is under the control of Boko Haram terrorists.”

He said the president had successfully carried out his mission in office and that as far as Borno State was concerned, he had done far more than anyone had expected.

He expressed their appreciation to the president for his sympathies following the devastating fire that consumed the entire Monday Market and went on to state the blessings of the Buhari administration in his eight years of being in office to the state:

“When you came in, we had more than two million Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, mostly women and children roaming the streets in Maiduguri. We had no power for two years; we had no GSM. We had no outgoing roads except that to Kano. Boko Haram had taken over the other roads.

“We had no Airport as the one here was damaged and therefore no commercial flights. 17 of the 27 local government councils were under Boko Haram. Today, no single local government area is under their control.

”You changed everything by transferring the Command-and-Control Center of the anti- terrorism war to this place. We thank you for standing with us in our trying times. Together, we remain with you, in or out of office.”
