Prof. Adekunle Ajayi, the Chief Medical Director, CMD, Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, FETHI, has advised Nigerians to take care of their heart while it is still functioning properly.

He gave the advice while delivering an inaugural lecture titled “Low Risk, Not risk: The Travails of a Lifetime Pump Fighting Fate” on Wednesday at Ekiti State University, EKSU, in Ado-Ekiti.

The professor of Cardiology said there were some major risk factors that could easily damage the human heart and cause untimely death.

He stated that smoking of cigarettes, marijuana, high blood pressure, serum lipids, diabetes mellitus, obesity, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity and metabolic syndrome were capable of causing cardiovascular disease.

Ajayi explained that smoking was associated with increased risk for coronary heart disease in adulthood, but smoking had higher risk of the disease in women than men.

He described hypertension as one of the strongest risk factors capable of causing cardiovascular diseases such as coronary disease, left ventricular hypertrophy and valvular heart disease and stroke.

The professor said that for an individual to lower his or her cardiovascular risk, the individual must quit smoking immediately, while individuals should choose a healthy food diet, among other measures.

He added that “low risk is never no risk. I want individuals and Nigerians to take responsibility for a healthy heart, while stakeholders in health system must upgrade their supportive involvement to reduce morbidity and mortality arising from cardiovascular diseases.

“For Nigerians to lower their cardiovascular risk, smokers should quit smoking and for those who are yet to start, they must not start.

“I want to advise individuals to eat healthy foods with balanced diet always to curb any forms of heart diseases.

“Another way to keep heart healthy and free from disease is to be physically active; government should provide safe sidewalks or initiate weekly keep fit exercise to promote physical activities.

“An individual must reduce Body Mass Index to less than 25kg, while blood pressure should be lower to less than 140/90mmHg a and maintain blood cholesterol of less than 5mmol/l or 190mg/dl.”

He said that if Nigerians could adhere strictly to the prescribed measures, it would reduce the mortality arising from cardiovascular diseases in the country.

The promise that the Ekiti State government will employ the first set of medical graduates of Ekiti State University (EKSU) Medical School was borne out of the desire to encourage the young graduates and other youths that there will always be light at the end of every dark tunnel.

The Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, made this known on Monday.

The 43 pioneer medical graduates were inducted into the medical profession in Ado-Ekiti on Monday, following the full accreditation of the college.

Speaking at the induction ceremony which took place at the university campus, Fayemi reinstated his promise that the government would employ as many of them that would want to work with the state after their house-job and national youth service.

The injection of the new doctors into health institutions in the state, according to Fayemi would also help the administration’s plan for excellent health care delivery.

The governor who noted the delay in the accreditation of the college which made the students spend 10 years for the six-year course, however commended them for their resilience.

He said the students would have been “saved the pain and frustration they experienced” if the immediate past administration had provided support for the College of Medicine where he stopped in 2014.

Fayemi said the student were likely to have stayed longer if his administration had not come on board in 2018 to provide the necessary support that made the final MDCN accreditation possible.

“I recall that the graduating students were barely a year in school when my government came into office in October 2019 and by the time we left in 2014, the basic medical programme was accredited, the physiology and biochemistry laboratory buildings were completed, the medical hostel was built and majority of the departments at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital had received accreditation.”

“If the succeeding administration had paid equal attention to the College of Medicine, the credit of graduating this first set of students would have gone to that administration while the students and their parents would have been saved the pain and frustration they experienced on this journey,” he said.

While justifying the attention given to the College of Medicine by his administration, the governor said the College as well as the State University Teaching Hospital would greatly contribute to the successful implementation of the health policies of his government for the benefit of the citizenry.

Fayemi who commended two of his predecessors in office, Otunba Niyi Adebayo and Chief Segun Oni, for their huge investment in the medical college, said his administration would continue to take proactive steps to deepen preventive healthcare programmes.

He disclosed that the state government had keyed into the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund to rapidly increase coverage of high impact health interventions.

The governor charged the new doctors not to rest on their oars but put in their best to ensure quality healthcare delivery.

In her speech, the acting Vice Chancellor of Ekiti State University, Prof. Olubunmi Ajayi, thanked Governor Fayemi for providing the logistics and financial support for the final accreditation of the College of Medicine.

The acting vice chancellor said the governor had come to the school’s rescue when it was at a “crossroads due to financial constraints and the graduation of our medical students was becoming an albatross.” adding that the governor’s gesture would continue to be a ” timeless memento.”

Prof. Ajayi also thanked the governor’s wife, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, for paying the school fees of some of the indigent students in the College of Medicine, in order to ensure they did not drop out of school.

Earlier, the Provost of the College, Prof. Kehinde Oluwadiya, disclosed that the immediate past administration had “made it clear that it was not ready to fund” the final accreditation despite the fact that the university and parents of the medical students had done their best.

Oluwadiya said Fayemi’s uncommon interest in the medical college was demonstrated when he approved all that the college needed for the final accreditation within three weeks.

Also speaking, the best graduating student, Dr. Iyanu Bankole, thanked the governor for rescuing the students from years of frustration and hopelessness.

Bankole described Fayemi as a man with a large heart, adding that his support gave all the final year medical students the opportunity to face their final examination without worries.

Ekiti State University, EKSU, Ado Ekiti, has begun a probe of the allegation of sexual misconduct against one of its lecturers, identified as Dr. O. O. Aduwo.

The lecturer, in a video that has gone viral, was caught pant down in a bid to have sexual relationship with a student whose name was not mentioned.

The lecturer was said to have demanded for sex as a condition for giving her a pass mark in an examination.

But reacting to the development, the management of EKSU said it had begun a probe.

The lecturer, according to the Head, Directorate of Information and Corporate Affairs of the university, Mr Bode Olofinmuagun, had been queried.

In a statement issued on by EKSU on Saturday, Olofinmuagun said the query was to give him the opportunity of stating his own side of the story.

His words: “The attention of the management of Ekiti State University has been drawn to a video that has gone viral on an alleged sex scandal involving one of our lecturers.

“The video allegedly fingered one Dr. O. O. Aduwo of the Department of Accounting as the culprit and query has been issued to the accused lecturer, to state his own side of the story.

“This will be followed by a panel which would dig deep into the matter.”

Olofinmuagun stated further that a panel would also be set up to further probe the case.

“Thereafter, a panel of investigation will be constituted to get to the root of the matter, while the findings of the panel will be made public.

”The general public is hereby assured that management will continue to be transparent and will not allow such a matter that could smear its good image to be swept under the carpet,” he said.

It would be recalled that a lecturer of the Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Professor Richard Akindele, was in 2018 involved in a similar case.

His victim was Miss Monica Osagie, who was his student.

At the end of his trial, he was sentenced to two years in prison by a Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo, Osun State.

Justice Maurine Onyetenu who gave the verdict said: “This kind of issue is too rampant in our tertiary institutions. We send children to school, they come home telling us that lecturers want to sleep with them.

“We cannot continue like this. Somebody has to be used as an example; even primary school pupils are complaining. Telling me to suspend sentence does not arise. Plea bargain does not arise. Maybe the case has continued to occur and reoccur because someone has not been used as an example.

“It is time for the court to start upholding the right of the children, especially female students. The case is endemic.”

Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has presented a 22-seater bus to the College of Medicine, Ekiti State University, as part of steps to ensure that the college gets full accreditation for its MBBS programme.

Presenting the bus to the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Oubunmi Ajayi, at the Governor’s Office, Ado-, on Wednesday, Fayemi said it was unfortunate that the college had not been able to graduate any student for the past 10 years of its existence as a result of accreditation.

He gave the assurance that his administration would provide all logistics for the final accreditation of the College before the December MBBS final examination.

The Governor said donating the bus to the college was a duty that the government owed the college and the medical students who had been denied graduation for years.

He stressed that any responsible and responsive government would not see anything extraordinary about the gesture.

Fayemi said many parents had written to him to help salvage the situation and ensure their students graduate.

He said his government would do everything within its power to ensure the students realised their ambition of graduating from the college and practising Medicine.

“This is not a favour to the college; it is a duty that we owe it. I don’t want you to think there is anything particularly extraordinary. If government has not done it before now, it shows that government has not deemed it fit to carry out its own responsibilities to the university and the students and we don’t want to shirk that responsibility.

“Ekiti State University in its wisdom has set up a College of Medicine. The purpose of setting up the college is to graduate Medical Doctors and it is taking us 10 years”.

“It is unfortunate to have kept this brilliant set of young people here for 10 years. Our duty is to accelerate their graduation in the shortest possible time. It is already too late for at least the first two sets of the college to come out and be of service to the health sector. Be that as it may, whatever it will take to ensure that we enable the university do that, we will do, including the provision of what is needed for the accreditation of the college and the students,” he said.

Receiving the key and documents of the bus from the governor, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ajayi, thanked the governor for the kind gesture.

She said the governor’s efforts were testaments to the fact that he had the interest of the university at heart right from the inception of his administration.

The acting vice chancellor said the varsity was already preparing for the accreditation which was scheduled for May ahead of the December final examination, adding that she was optimistic that the students would perform excellently.

Prof Ajayi said the governor’s step would help the College actualise her long-term dreams with the conclusion of the accreditation process.

Some of the medical students who accompanied the university’s principal officers to receive the vehicle praised the governor for working with the school management to ensure that the college got accredited.

They pledge to serve the society with the best of their professional ability upon graduation.

Present at the presentation event were the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr Biodun Omoleye; Acting Head of Service, Mrs Olapeju Babafemi, Director General Office of Transformation and Service Delivery (OTSD), Prof Bolaji Aluko, and the Ekiti State University Registrar, Mr Akin Arogundade, among others.
