Security source said that the suspect was apprehended on Sunday while attempting to procure supplies for insurgents operating along the Ngamdu–Benisheik corridor.

According to the source, the suspect confessed during preliminary interrogation to participating in recent attacks on Benisheik and Ngamdu.

The source said that the suspect disclosed that the fighters mobilised from Jilli in Gubio local government area before carrying out the attacks.

“Before the attack, we came from Jilli and returned there afterwards,” the suspect was quoted as saying.

Military source also said that the suspect revealed that he was redeployed from Jilli on Saturday with N850,000 to procure logistics for other fighters.

“I was sent from Jilli with N850,000 to collect supplies from Ngamdu, but I was arrested by troops.

“I left behind other fighters at the Jilli enclave but cannot confirm developments there now following recent military airstrikes,” the suspect said.

The military source said that the arrest provided further insight into the operational and logistics network of ISWAP, highlighting the role of Jilli as a staging ground.

The development comes less than 24 hours after the Air Component of OPHK conducted precision airstrikes on terrorist locations within the Jilli axis.

The strikes followed sustained Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, ISR, missions targeting insurgent logistics movements.

Field reports indicate that motorcycles and a vehicle linked to the insurgents were destroyed, while several fighters were neutralised.

Sources said some insurgents initially fled on sighting the aircraft but later regrouped to evacuate casualties.

Military authorities have consistently described Jilli as a key insurgent enclave where logistics coordination takes place.

The military has reiterated its commitment to sustaining pressure on insurgents through coordinated air and ground offensives.

There were reports of civilian casualties in the air strikes earlier, of which the NAF has initiated investigation into the allegation according to the Director, Public Relations and Information of NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, on Sunday.

In a statement on Sunday, spokesman, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the incident was reported to have occurred on Saturday.

Ejodame said reports suggested the strike might have hit a local market in Jilli, raising concerns about civilian casualties.

He said the Chief of the Air Staff had ordered the immediate activation of the Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation Cell.

According to him, the cell has been deployed to the location on a fact-finding mission into the allegations.

Ejodame said the airstrike, conducted at about 1205 hours on April 1 by the Air Component of the Joint Task Force North East, followed credible intelligence and sustained surveillance confirming the presence of terrorists in the area.

He said the targeted enclave had been under close monitoring through Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance missions, which revealed significant activity and movement within the settlement.

According to him, NAF air assets executed precision strike missions upon confirmation of the targets, delivering multiple attack runs on structures and concealed targets used by the insurgents.

He said the strikes, described as highly effective, led to the destruction of key infrastructure, including logistics hubs and operational shelters within the enclave.

“Scores of fighters were neutralised during the bombardment, significantly degrading the operational capability of the enclave and disrupting insurgent movement in the area.

“The successful air interdiction is expected to create favourable conditions for ground troops to advance, dominate the area and carry out follow-on clearance operations,” he said.

Ejodame said the operation underscored the growing synergy between air and ground forces in the ongoing counter-insurgency campaign in the North-East.

It added that the enclave, believed to be a stronghold of ISWAP elements, suffered a major setback, with its command and support structures effectively dismantled.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to sustaining intelligence-driven precision strikes against terrorist hideouts across the theatre.

Aneke said the air force would continue to work in close coordination with surface forces to deny terrorists freedom of action and eliminate all remaining enclaves.

He emphasised that the sustained air campaign remained critical to restoring lasting peace and security in the region.

The Director, Public Relations and Information, NAF, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, made this known in a statement on Monday in Abuja.

Ejodame said the operation, carried out under the Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, targeted terrorist elements in the Yuwe general area of the Sambisa axis on February 28.

He said the early morning Air Interdiction mission was intelligence-driven, following confirmatory Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, ISR, that identified structures used as terrorist commanders’ hideouts and logistics warehouses.

According to him, strike aircraft accurately acquired and engaged the validated targets, delivering precision munitions that effectively dismantled critical terrorist infrastructure.

”Post-strike battle damage assessments, supported by credible intelligence, confirmed the neutralisation of several senior terrorist commanders and fighters actively coordinating hostile activities within the theatre.

”The air strikes were also said to have significantly disrupted the terrorists’ command-and-control network while degrading their logistics capability, thereby constraining their operational effectiveness in the region,” he said.

Ejodame added that it had sustained ISR coverage over the area to track fleeing elements and identify additional verified targets for possible engagement.

He quoted the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, as commending the professionalism and combat efficiency of the aircrew and supporting personnel.

Aneke reiterated the Air Force’s determination to deny terrorists safe haven anywhere in the country.

”The Nigerian Air Force will continue to project decisive air power in close synergy with ground forces until every identified terrorist enclave is dismantled,” he said.

The CAS reaffirmed the service’s commitment to sustaining aggressive, intelligence-led operations aimed at protecting the nation and restoring lasting peace in affected areas.

Ejodame said the operations were conducted on January 15 and 16 by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai, following actionable intelligence and in close coordination with troops in contact.

He said the NAF aircraft, in the early hours of January 16, swiftly responded to a distress report at Azir, where troops were engaged with terrorists withdrawing from the area.

According to him, further scans revealed terrorist elements attempting to regroup under nearby tree cover, prompting precise and successive air strikes that neutralised several of them.

“Post-strike assessment confirmed no further threats, while feedback from ground troops, local authorities and community sources indicated a significant degradation of terrorist presence and a return of relative calm.

“Earlier on January 15, NAF air assets carried out a successful air interdiction at Musarram in the Tumbuns general area after intelligence revealed terrorists assembling on canoes to launch attacks along the Baga and Fish Dam axis.

“On arrival, the aircraft sighted about 10 canoes and over 40 suspected terrorists, who were engaged in multiple passes, throwing them into disarray.

“Some fleeing elements were trailed and neutralised, while others who regrouped at an assembly area were also engaged, effectively dismantling the terrorist concentration,” he said.

Reacting, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to providing timely and decisive air support to ground forces.

Aneke said the operations demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence-led air power and close air–ground coordination in denying terrorists freedom of action.

He assured Nigerians of sustained pressure on terrorist elements as the Armed Forces of Nigeria continue efforts to degrade their capabilities and stabilise affected areas.

In his remarks, the Chief of the Air Staff, CAS, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, represented by the Chief of Civil Military Relations, AVM Edward Gabkwet, expressed gratitude to the state government for ensuring relationship between the NAF and the people.

He commended Governor Ahmed Aliyu for inclusive development policies and security initiatives under the 9-Point Smart Agenda, particularly the establishment of the Sokoto State Community Guards Corps.

The CAS noted that the governor’s proactive and localised security measures had complemented federal efforts in curbing the activities of terrorists and bandits, contributing to improved safety across parts of the state and reinforcing the importance of strong civil military cooperation.

He explained that the said air strikes were conducted under Operation Fasan Yamma following intelligence reports of suspected armed terrorists transiting through the affected communities.

According to him, although multiple intelligence checks informed the mission, a petition received in April 2025 alleged civilian casualties.

“A thorough fact-finding investigation confirmed that 13 civilians were unintentionally killed and eight others sustained various degrees of injuries.

“The findings deeply saddened the Service and necessitated urgent steps to make amends,” he said.

Aneke emphasised that since assuming office on October 24, Civilian Harm Mitigation had remained at the forefront of his command philosophy.

According to him, the NAF exists primarily to protect the lives and property of Nigerians, adding that no professional military deliberately harms the very people it is sworn to defend.

He explained that the compensation exercise was intended to commiserate with the victims, promote accountability and transparency, calm tensions, and bring closure, while enabling the service to draw critical lessons to further reduce the likelihood of similar incidents in the future.

The CAS disclosed that the NAF had continued to institutionalise measures aimed at preventing and responding to civilian harm, including the development of the NAF Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan, NAF CHMR-AP.

According to him, the framework is designed to strengthen operational planning, improve assessments and investigations, enhance continuous learning, and ensure effective response whenever civilian harm occurs.

He added that the plan’s scalability made it applicable across both kinetic and non-kinetic operations, with the protection and restoration of the civilian environment treated as a critical operational consideration.

The air chief reaffirmed NAF’s resolve to apply purposeful and precise lethality in neutralising terrorists and other criminal elements.

“We want to use this medium to appeal to citizens to desist from mingling or cohabiting with terrorists and bandits within their enclaves as such associations significantly increase the risk of collateral damage during military operations.

“Public cooperation remains vital to safeguarding innocent lives as security forces intensify operations nationwide.

“The Nigerian Air Force, in concert with other security agencies, remains fully committed to ending terrorism, banditry, cattle rustling, and kidnapping across Sokoto State, the wider North-West region and the nation at large,” he added.

In his response, the governor expressed appreciation to the NAF for its unwavering commitment to protecting and caring for citizens, as well as its resolute role in safeguarding the nation’s security and territorial integrity.

Ejodame said the aircraft had taken off for a routine functional check when it developed a sudden emergency.

He said the pilots were said to have remained calm, expertly manoeuvred the jet away from populated areas and then executed a safe ejection in line with global aviation safety procedures.

Ejodame said the crew’s swift action demonstrated high discipline, competence and dedication to duty.

He said that both pilots were immediately recovered and were undergoing routine medical checks.

According to him, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, lauded the pilots for their sound judgement, noting that their professionalism averted what could have been a major tragedy.

He said the CAS had ordered the convening of a Board of Inquiry to investigate the cause of the incident.
