Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF Champions League, Rivers United, played their first match against Shooting Stars on Wednesday and it was a scintillating encounter.

A goal in each half from Ubong Friday and Maclyn Biokpo were all the Garden City lads needed to whip the Ibadan based team 2-0 to top Group A with three points.

Ubong’s free-kick goal in the closing stage of the first half was spectacular as it reminds one of such delivery in European Leagues especially the English Premier League.

It was a tight encounter but Rivers were more comfortable and clearly the better side.

In spite of their good display, Technical Adviser Finidi George was very restless in the VIP boss as he gave out instructions to his assistants and players occasionally.

Before the encounter, media officer of the team, Charles Mayuoku, noted that the EIC would be taken seriously because of the team’s preparations for the continental assignment later in the year and the new league season.

“We have our target cut out and the technical crew is not joking with this event. For us, we take this event as a season starter especially because of some new players in our fold,” Mayuoku said.

Ikorodu City, also in Group A settled for a 2-2 draw against Shooting Stars in the opener and will be up against River United in a decisive encounter that will determine who plays in the final or third place match on Sunday.

Host, Ikorodu City, need an outright win while a draw will be sufficient to see Rivers through to the final after sending Shooting Stars out on Wednesday.

Remo Stars also were off to a bright start with a 2-1 win over 36 Lions, who are out of the competition after losing two games in Group B.

The encounter between Smart City and Remo will also be interesting to decide the positions of teams from the group.

Executive Director, Publicity and Strategy for the Local Organising Committee of the EIC, Onome Obruthe, said the organising team was proud to have four top NPFL teams with three of the best five last season taking part in the ongoing tournament.

The EIC, a pre-season tournament is billed to take place at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos between July 6th and 13th.

In collaboration with the Lagos State government, SKI-Hi Entertainment is staging the competition expected to feature a total of eight teams.

They are Remo Stars, Ikorodu United, Shooting Stars and Enyimba of Aba.

The four teams expected from other parts of the continent are FC Kallon of Sierra Leone, Accra Hearts of Oak, Ghana, SuperSports United FC of South Africa and FC Dadje of Republic of Benin.

Only recently, the organisers of the highly anticipated tournament got confirmation from the top management of Remo Stars about the readiness of the team to take part in the competition.

It was further revealed that Remo Stars management was already working on strengthening the team in readiness for the continental assignment of the league champions.

The Executive Director, Publicity and Strategy for the Local Organizing Committee of the EIC, Onome Obruthe, said for all the teams, the EIC was a preparatory event for the new season.

“For Remo Stars as a team expected to campaign in the CAF Champions league, it is a good opportunity not only to play against other Nigerian teams but against the teams coming from other parts of Africa.

“Other teams are expected to also use the tournament to evaluate their wards and make adjustment before the domestic and continental games start.

“On our part, we are working hard with the Lagos State government to make this tournament have a good impact on the teams and all the participants as a whole including the spectators,” Obruthe stated.

Deaconess Adesina passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, well into her 90s.

She was a dutiful and faithful soldier of Christ, a loyal and devoted wife to her late husband; a loving and caring mother to her children – biological and adopted.

She was described as a pillar of support for her family – nuclear and extended.

A selfless giver who embodied compassion in its truest form, she was a gifted and self-taught intellectual with unparalleled love for education and a lover of God with an undiluted vision of eternity.

A long-time deaconess of the Baptist Church, she has left a huge legacy of compassion, righteousness and hard work.

Among her children is Debo Adesina, immediate past Ambassador of Nigeria to the Republic of Togo and formerly Editor-in-Chief/Chief Operating Officer of The Guardian newspapers.

Onibon is the Provost of Michael Otedola College of Primary Education, MOCPED, Noforija, Epe in Lagos State.

Onibon expressed excitement about the new appointment on his Facebook page, describing it as a call to service.

His words: “The Committee of Provosts in Nigeria, at its just concluded meeting on Thursday in Abuja, appointed me the Editor-in-Chief of its Academic Journal. Another call to service, may God put me through. Amen.”

Born on October 13, 1967, Onibon attended Ansar-Ud-Deen Primary School Epe (1974-1980), and later went to Alaro Community High School, Iraye-Oke also in Epe (1980-1985).

He bagged his first degree in Arts, Arabic Language and Literature from the Lagos State University (1992).

His M.Sc is in International Relations (1998) and Arabic Language Studies (2000) from the University of Ibadan and Lagos State University respectively.

He also has a PhD in Arabic Language Studies from the International Islamic University, Malaysia and has published many research publications and books.
