The Lagos State deputy governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, has expressed the Lagos State government’s readiness to host the GITEX Nigeria conference in September next year.

He said the state government and indeed the entire technology ecosystem in Nigeria would be very receptive to the coming of the global tech show to the country, especially Lagos State, where tech and innovation have found a good ground in Africa.

Hamzat stated this during a meeting with Trixie LohMirmand, the Chief Executive Officer of Kaoun International, and her management team in the Lagos Pavilion at the ongoing GITEX 2024 in Dubai.

The deputy governor stated that there could not have been a better time for the tech world to make their presence felt in Africa, particularly Nigeria, than now, when the country is experiencing an upsurge in the growth of talents in technology and innovation.

Hamzat said the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration was deliberate in its decision to make technology drive more of the state’s development programmes.

He said: “Lagos, for example, does what we call ‘Art of Technology (AOT),’ which is now in its fifth year. With the AOT, a lot of young entrepreneurs in the IT and innovation space have been discovered, and many of them are now running as business, with its attendant effect on our economy and the entire ecosystem.

“Another great thing that we’ve discovered is that the number of young entrepreneurs in Lagos State is unbelievable, and like you said, we can’t bring everybody here to Dubai. So, bringing GITEX to Lagos is very good, and it will allow even other countries to see what is possible. Because the news that we get out there is not real.”

READ ALSO: Police smash armed robbery gang in Imo

The deputy governor added that the young innovators in Lagos were already creating real solutions, saying their creation was solving real-life problems and helping their immediate families, friends, and communities.

“There are 10-year-old, 12-year-old children that all they do is coding, because they want to help their parents sell their products and services. For example, young innovators whose parents are fishermen or fish sellers. The parents are probably petty traders. But these primary and secondary school pupils sit down, do the codes to help their parents sell, and people come all over the place to buy. The parents are surprised to see the massive turnout of customers at their stalls—that is the power of technology and innovation, and as a state government, we are more than happy to host an event of this nature that would help to connect these talents that we have in abundance to the countless opportunities out here.

“We have pockets of knowledge in our state. The question for us is, how do we explode it, how do we actually make it out there, and then allow people to benefit? The creators also need to benefit from their thinking. So, my hope is that GITEX Nigeria can do that for us when you are able to bring all these young people from different areas.

“I know its technology, but how do we take it to entertainment? Entertainment is big in Nigeria; the creative industry is the next oil as far as we are concerned, and that is why we are investing heavily in that sector,” Hamzat said.

The Chief Executive Officer of Kaoun, Trixie LohMirmand, said, “Technology is a necessity; it is not a luxury, saying that the world needs it for survival.”

She said the last time she visited Nigeria for a meeting, she and her team saw young Nigerians who “sat in a small room with systems on their laps doing great things.”

LohMirmand, whose company organises GITEX Global, said they were committed to discovering new partners and to connect Nigeria to opportunities that were yet untapped in the technology space.

She said: “That is our role. We will need a lot of support from your government in terms of logistics and security for us to organise a good show in Lagos, Nigeria.”

GITEX, the biggest technology showpiece in the world, connects people with industry leaders from big tech, global governments, innovative startups, expert investors, and corporate buyers. It is a computer expo held annually at the Dubai World Trade Center in the United Arab Emirates.

The event underpins the rapid technology-driven transformations, investments, and projects shaping the economies of the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.

This year is the fourth time that the Lagos State government is attending the World Technology event.

The last three attendances by the state have driven value to Lagos, bringing investment opportunities into the tech space and also enhancing the capacity of tech start-ups, directly and indirectly.

Students across tertiary institutions in the country under the aegis of National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, have passed a vote of confidence on the Dangote Refinery.

This is as they described the recent demarketing of the world’s largest single train refinery as the greatest disservice to the nation’s economy.

Speaking after a tour of the refinery on Thursday in Lagos, leaders of the students’ body comprising of those from universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, said it would take an enemy of Nigeria to rubbish the gigantic project that would stop importation of fuel once and for all and save the nation of the scarce forex.

The NANS Senate President, Akinteye Babatunde Afiz, addressing the management of the Dangote Refinery said they had the mandate of Nigerian students to come and assess the situation of the refinery having been told that the refinery was uncompleted and inferior in all standards.

He said: “We had a meeting on the situation in the country vis a vis the uncertainty in the oil and gas industry, especially the current fuel scarcity and we resolved to visit Dangote refinery to see things for ourselves. Having gone round the facility, our heart melted at the humongous size of the refinery.

“We are speaking the minds of all Nigerian students that government should direct all marketers to patronize Dangote refinery and ease the current fuel hardship. If anyone wants to compete with Dangote let them go and build their own. Government has four refineries and they are not working yet they don’t want the one that is available to sell. We will not accept that.

“Dangote refinery has come to stay. We have discovered that all claims being bandied around are false. Our impression is that they never expected the refinery to stand, that is why they are against you. But we are pledging our resolve to stand by you.

“We have seen the refinery laboratory and we could see that it is world class. We can’t allow this type of project that holds great potential for Nigeria’s economy to go down through some people’s disdain for the success of Alhaji Aliko Dangote.”

He then urged the government to do everything possible to support Dangote refinery and protect it from saboteurs.

Earlier, the Vice-President, Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, while welcoming the student leaders to the refinery thanked them for the concern for the facility and the resolve to stand for the truth by rejecting monetary inducement.

READ ALSO: Explosion kills one, injures 11 in Maiduguri –Police

He told the students that President Tinubu had intervened and commended the president for the directive for crude to be sold to Dangote refinery in Naira currency, saying it was a good development for all Nigerians.

Edwin said the concern of the students was well placed as all Nigerians should be worried indeed because about 90 per cent of Nigeria forex went into importation of fuel and that Dangote refinery could help solve the problem as 43 per cent of its capacity production could satisfy domestic demand while the remaining will be exported to generate more forex into the country.

Wondering why anyone would want to frustrate the refinery, Edwin noted, “So much has been spent on the government refineries and there was nothing to show for it as they remained moribund.

“What we want to do in Refinery, we have done it in other businesses; Nigeria used to be the biggest importer of Sugar, we came in and changed the narrative. We led the backward integration scheme of the federal government, and we now produce sugar locally for domestic consumption and others have joined us. We did same in Cement by opening up production plant and today Nigeria exports cement to other countries.

“In a business no one was interested in investing into, Dangote delved into it determined to ensure Nigeria no longer imports fuel, invested massively and come up with the world’s largest single train refinery. He said he would not take his money to Dubai or Swiss banks as others are doing, he decided to invest at home and now they are saying he wants to create monopoly.

“We didn’t ask for any favour other than that we want to buy crude to produce, first they said there was no crude, later they said we would have to pay some dollars above the prevailing crude market price. And this is a global market where you can track crude prices anytime. We resorted to buying crude from Brazil and United States. Later they said we should not be announcing the price of the products.

“Even the US that is the leading proponent of free market economy protects its local industries by imposing huge duty on foreign imports just to protect local industries. This is a man that Saudi Aramco once approached to come and cite his refinery in Saudi Arabia, promising steady supply of crude. Abu Dahbi also invited him to do same on their soil but he rejected insisting he would build at home. Now, he did that and a facility that is supposed to add value to Nigeria’s economy is being frustrated.”

The Dangote Industries boss said the company would continue to focus on its business strategy which is to add value to Nigeria economy through investments and job creation for the teeming Nigerian masses.

President Bola Tinubu will, on Wednesday, depart Abuja for Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to attend the COP28 Climate Summit, also known as the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference, or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP28).

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ajuri Ngelale, made this known on Tue3sday.

He said at the World Leaders’ Summit, which takes place on December 1 and 2, 2023, under the theme, “Unite, Act, and Deliver,” President Tinubu will deliver a national statement, highlighting Nigeria’s stance on various thematic issues, including renewable energy and climate financing.

Mindful of the severe impact of climate change on Nigeria, such as desertification, flooding, erosion, drought, and national security risks arising therefrom, President Tinubu will maximise the opportunity afforded by the platform to advocate increased financial and technical support for developing nations, while reminding developed countries of their public pledge to provide $100 billion annually for support to localised initiatives to address climate change-related challenges.

The president’s message will also focus on holding businesses and institutions accountable, reflecting Nigeria’s dedication to sustainable and responsible practices.

The Nigerian delegation to COP28 will actively explore establishing new and deeper bilateral partnerships to implement Nigeria’s Energy Transition, Article 6 Projects, Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs), Technology Transfer, Capacity Building, and Methane Mitigation.

While in Dubai, President Tinubu will actively participate in key sideline events, which will further support the advancement of his avowed commitment to aggressively attract foreign direct investment for enhanced wealth creation and revenue expansion in the country, in addition to other events hosted by the Nigerian delegation.

The president, who will be accompanied by senior government officials, is expected to return to Abuja at the conclusion of the summit.

Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, received the management of Dubai World Trade Centre, DWTC, and KAOUN International Dubai led by Ms. Trixie Loh Yi Shan LohMirmand on a courtesy visit at the Lagos House, Marina.

The meeting was a follow-up on a proposed partnership on technology exchange being developed by the Lagos State Government and the United Arab Emirates, UAE,-based international exhibition firms.

Last June, Governor Sanwo-Olu attended the Gulf Information Technology Exchange (GITEX) – Africa’s largest technology conference held in Morocco – which was organised by DWTC and KAOUN International Dubai. Before a global audience, the governor shared the story of Lagos’ technological advancement, while reassuring investors of the State’s willingness to pursue Foreign Direct Investment, FDI, into the local technology ecosystem.

Sanwo-Olu said Lagos remained an important technology hub in Africa, noting that the state was ready to work with the firms to host global technology exhibition.

That, he said, would raise the growth potential for start-ups and entrepreneurs operating in the local technology ecosystem.

The governor said: “Lagos is an important economic destination in Africa, which is why we are excited to see all the conversations, which started over a year ago, being put together. I appreciate the team work. We are beginning to build something that will be global and something that will be interesting to our continent and the world. We are excited about where the conversation DWTC and its partner is leading to. We are hoping that, in the next couple of months, we could make a few big announcements. We could set on a trajectory where both Lagos State and your organisations can indeed help those in tech eco-space.

READ ALSO: Sanwo-Olu woos investors in America, says Lagos is right

“Lagos has the biggest tech ecosystem in Africa and the State is home to entertainment, fashion, and music. We can infuse all of these into new technology to leapfrog discoveries in new music, fashion and everything the world wants to see. We have excellent team that will be in position to help realise these objectives with your organisations. We will do everything to ensure that Lagos is on global map where it can recreate modern technology with new techniques and discoveries to drive entertainment and music. In the collaboration, we also want to leverage technology to improve the Ease of Doing Business index.”

LohMirmand said her visit to Lagos was to further to explore areas of mutual collaboration in technology and broker partnership with the Lagos Government. She said the DWTC team and its partner would be willing to get involved in Lagos’ digital transformation vision, as well as other areas of collaboration in technology.

LohMirmand said: “This is my first visit to Nigeria and this is coming on the background of a very interesting conversation with the Lagos State Government to discuss the great markets that we have. We are looking forward to exciting opportunities that we can build with the State of Lagos and the new administration in Nigeria. We are ready for collaboration, so that we can support and contribute to Nigeria’s digital transformation roadmap.”

Attempt by a human trafficker, Mathew Bassey, to export illicit drug to Dubai, United Arab Emirate by planting same in the luggage of an orphan, Ms. Peter Gift Eno, recruited for a phantom job in the Arab nation has been thwarted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Ikeja Lagos.

Bassey, 29, from Oron local government area of Akwa Ibom State was arrested on Wednesday 6th July following the interception of Eno at the departure hall of the Lagos airport.

When Enos luggage was searched, 50 parcels of cannabis (2.80kg) concealed in food items were discovered while there were discrepancies between the age she declared and the date of birth on her international passport.

Further interview reveals that the human trafficker who recruited and brought her to the airport, Mathew Bassey was still lurking around the airport, waiting for her departure.

He was promptly tracked and arrested.

Investigations showed that the victim who hails from the same Oron local government area of Akwa Ibom State like Bassey recently lost her mother and as a result made it easy for Bassey to recruit her with the promise of securing her a job in Dubai, UAE.

It was further discovered that the recruiter leveraged on the victims naivety and planted drugs in her bag for onward delivery to his contact in Dubai.

In a related development, the desperate bid by a drug trafficker, Aloysius Ajuruchukwu Onyekwe (a.k.a Kelvin) to travel by road to Algeria through Sokoto State with ingested 47 wraps of cocaine in his stomach has been frustrated by NDLEA operatives who intercepted him in Ibadan, Oyo State following intelligence shared by the Department of State Security, DSS.

Onyekwe, 26, who hails from Owerri West local government area, Imo State was arrested on Sunday 3rd July at Ojo park, Ibadan where he went to board a vehicle enroute Sokoto to Algeria.

He was travelling with an 18-year-old lady, Blessing Nwoke.

The father of a 10-month-old child who passed out the 47 pellets of cocaine in five excretions confessed that he began his journey to Algeria from Cele area of Okota, Lagos where he ingested the illicit drug, weighing 1.1kg.

Also in Oyo State, no fewer than 1,900 tablets of Tramadol 225mg were seized from a drug dealer, Mustapha Ijabula, 22, who was arrested in a Yola, Adamawa-bound commercial vehicle stopped for routine search along Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

He hails from Mubi area of Adamawa State.

In Akwa Ibom State, a trans-border trafficker, Fonkou Dassi, 31, was on Friday 8th July arrested with 6,000 tablets of Tramadol 225mg weighing 3kg by officers of Marine Unit of the Agency when a commercial boat he boarded was intercepted and searched on his way to Cameroon.

The suspect concealed the recovered drugs inside Indomie noodles carton.

In the same vein, a wanted drug dealer, Uduak Edidiong Samuel, 29, was arrested on Tuesday 5th July, after attending a court proceeding where his wife was undergoing trial for another drug case.

The suspect had abandoned a cannabis sativa exhibit weighing 9kg when his house was searched on 27th June and has been on the run since then.

During his arrest on Tuesday, Uduak was still found in possession of a wrap of skunk.

In Edo State, a notorious drug dealer Beauty Dauda, 27, has been arrested with various quantities of Meth, heroin, cannabis and crack cocaine in a densely populated slum along Lagos bypass, Benin City.

She was arrested on Wednesday 6th July after NDLEA operatives were able to break through the ring of protection often provided her by hoodlums and touts in the area.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday in Dubai declared that Nigeria remained the most viable and attractive investment destination in Africa.

He added that the country was on the path of becoming the continent’s leading industrial and trading nation.

Addressing a trade and investment forum at Dubai Expo 2020, organised by Nigerian Arabian Gulf Chamber of Commerce, Nigeria’s Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission, NIPC, the president said Nigeria was reaping from the efforts his administration had made to consciously improve the investment environment.

‘‘Nigeria’s pavilion at the Expo 2020 clearly shows why we remain the most viable and attractive investment destination in Africa.

‘‘Our location, our natural resources, our population, and our regulations are there for all to see. Nigeria is on its way to become a leading industrial and trading nation in Africa.

‘‘To achieve this, our government focused on policies, projects and programmes that support private sector investors.

“We introduced numerous fiscal incentives and infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing the viability of investments.

“Despite the adverse global economic environment of recent years, Nigeria’s investment environment has greatly improved both at the national and sub-national levels,’’ he said.

President Buhari assured captains of industry, and entrepreneurs, who have shown interest and commitment to further enhance trade and investment relations with Nigeria, that his administration would continue to work with them to improve the business climate especially as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) comes into full effect.

‘‘Just last month at the Intra Africa Trade fair in Durban, I reminded business leaders that most of Africa’s challenges, whether security, economic or corruption, can be traced to our inability to domesticate the production of our most basic requirements and provide jobs to our teeming and dynamic youth population.

‘‘I am pleased that this Forum focuses on ‘Unveiling Trade and Investment Opportunities in Nigeria,’ and will encourage you all to keep an open mind and look beyond the challenges.

‘‘In this room, we have Governors, Ministers and Heads of Government Agencies that can address all your questions and concerns.

‘‘We are here to support you and I hope you will all take this opportunity to move your investment decisions forward,’’ he said.

The Nigerian leader also used the occasion to express profound gratitude to his hosts, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates and the Emir of Abu Dhabi, for their unwavering commitment to strengthen trade and investment relations between both countries through various initiatives, partnerships and support.

Amid the global surge in cases of COVID-19, President Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, stressed the need for world leaders to work together and reinforce partnerships to limit the catastrophic consequences of the pandemic.

Speaking at Nigeria Day during Expo Dubai 2020, the president declared that the theme of the very important global event, “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future” had placed a moral burden on all relevant stakeholders, across national boundaries, to urgently work together for a better and brighter future.

‘‘The concerted efforts by world leaders, working together, enabled us to limit the catastrophic consequences of this pandemic.

‘‘Such level of continuing understanding and pragmatic partnerships are needed and must be reinforced to ensure that our world is a better place that addresses humanity’s common challenges to guarantee sustainable development and progress for the global community,’’ he said.

President Buhari told the Expo that Nigeria, like other countries in the world, was impacted negatively by the COVID-19 pandemic, compounding national efforts in addressing insecurity, fighting corruption and diversifying the nation’s economy.

Nonetheless, he noted that the present administration in Nigeria had registered significant progress within a short period of time and was still making headways in key sectors of the economy.

‘‘Therefore, the Nigerian delegation is participating in this Expo with great prospects for positive outcomes, while assuring the world of our determination and readiness to partner with relevant investors in our bid to tackle a number of challenges to make Nigeria a better country.

‘‘Nigeria is participating in this epoch-making event in order to explore opportunities that are capable of unlocking the huge potentials that abound in our country, as it makes conscious efforts to be a strategic partner of choice for the global community.

‘‘It is my pleasure, therefore, to invite all participating countries, organisations and other private sector operators to take full advantage of opportunities being provided by the Expo 2020, by linking up with the Nigerian team, to collaborate with us in diverse areas of interests for our mutual benefits,’’ he said.

The Nigerian leader thanked Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), for inviting him to the Expo and especially to attend Nigeria’s Day event, which offers a great opportunity to showcase the potential of Africa’s largest economy.

The president described Expo Dubai 2020 as the single most important global event of its kind to take place in the Middle East, Africa and the South East Asian regions in recent years.

‘‘We are proud to be a part of this dynamic evolution of pragmatic partnerships that are both creative and innovative for the progress of the country.

‘‘I heartily congratulate the UAE authorities for the painstaking work to create this state of the art complex that has connected our world within our fingertips as we share international best-practices as well as opportunities that abound in all our countries,’’ he said.
