The court dismissed the appeal of the convicts for lack of merit.

The appellate panel, comprising Justice Ridwan Abdullahi, Justice Gabriel Kolawole and Justice Abdul Dogo, upheld the judgment of Justice Haleemah Saleeman of the Kwara High Court which sentenced the appellants to death by hanging.

The convicts are Niyi Ogundiran, Salawu Azeez, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Ayoade Akinnibosun and Adeola Abraham.

In its ruling, the court rejected all the grounds of appeal filed by the appellants and ordered their immediate return to prison custody.

The convictions arose from the coordinated bank robbery carried out in April 2018 in Offa, headquarters of Offa local government area of Kwara, during which five commercial banks were attacked.

No fewer than 32 persons, including nine police officers, were killed during the attacks.

The convicts were found guilty of armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms and culpable homicide.

A sixth suspect, who was a retired police officer, Michael Adikwu, died in custody before the commencement of the trial.

Justice Saleeman had earlier sentenced the five convicts to death by hanging after a trial that lasted about six years and attracted nationwide attention.

The lead prosecution counsel, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), described the appellate court’s decision as thorough and well considered, inspite of the prolonged delays that characterised the trial.

Mr Abdullah Jimba, counsel to one of the convicts, said preparations were underway to pursue a final appeal at the Supreme Court.

In a statement on Monday, Lt. Umar Muhammad, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations of the Brigade, described the arrest as a major operational breakthrough for the army.

According to him, the arrest of the notorious bandit leader responsible for multiple kidnapping and armed robbery incidents along the Benue–Taraba axis is a major breakthrough in the troops’ operations.

“The arrest was carried out on December 22, 2025 during a precision, intelligence driven operation at Vaase Community, Ukum LGA of Benue State.

“The operation resulted in the arrest of Fidelis Gayama, a high value suspect long sought by security agencies.”

He said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was closely linked to Aka Dogo, a wanted armed group leader.

“The suspect is currently in military custody and will be handed over to the appropriate authority for comprehensive investigation and prosecution in line with extant laws.”

Brig.-Gen. Kingsley Uwa, Commander 6 Brigade, has commended the troops for their professionalism, discipline and operational precision.

He described the arrest as a significant blow to criminal networks operating within the area.

Uwa reaffirmed the Brigade’s unwavering commitment to sustaining offensive operations and ensuring the safety of lives and property.

The Commander further called on members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies in support of ongoing security efforts.

The club was humbled by the visiting El-Kanemi Warriors FC 4-3 at the Lafia Township Stadium.

Nasarawa Utd, who just returned to the league from relegation, have two points in three matches.

The team drew their first two matches against Shooting Stars FC of Ibadan in Lafia and Niger Tornadoes FC in an away match.

In a post-match interview, the team’s Technical Adviser, Kabir Dogo, said that the team could win anywhere in a football game.

Dogo pointed out that they knew their players better now and promised to re-strategise for the games ahead.

On his part, Coach Aliyu Zuberu of El-Kanemi Warriors said he was greatly excited with the three away points.

Zuberu also said that the team would take every match seriously to enable them to win the league at the end of the season.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, disclosed  this during a parade of the suspects at the police headquarters on Friday.

The Commissioner of Police, Salma Dogo, told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in a telephone interview on Thursday, that the generator house was set ablaze and the office was vandalized.

He said that already the police along with security agencies had taken security measures to safeguard lives and property of the residents.

The centre, which serves the northwestern region of Nigeria, was scheduled for commissioning on Wednesday, August 7.

However, protesters invaded the centre, broke into offices, and looted state-of-the-art equipment worth billions of Naira.

The generator room was also reportedly set ablaze.

The centre was established to promote the federal government’s digital economy initiative by training young Nigerians in digital entrepreneurship.

The attack on the centre has significant implications for the government’s digital economy project, which aims to foster young digital entrepreneurs.
