A divorce-seeking husband, Oyeyinka Adegoke, on Friday passionately pleaded with a Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan to save him from his wife, Wuraola, whom he alleged was diabolic.

Adegoke stated in his testimony that his fortune had nosedived since he exchanged marital vows with Wuraola.

He added that his wife was not only diabolic but that she was also stubborn and disobedient.

“My Lord, Wuraola recently destroyed two of my vehicles and a motorcycle which I use for business.

“Worse still, I gave her a car for transportation, but she caused the car to suffer mishap.

“As if those were not enough, Wuraola has been aborting the pregnancies she had for me,” Adegoke said.

The petitioner pleaded with the court not to waste any further time in terminating the marriage.

At the conclusion of his testimony, the court’s President, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the suit until June 29 for the respondent to state her case.

A spare parts dealer, Mr Olubunmi Osundeyi, has prayed a Grade’ A’ Customary Court in Mapo in Ibadan to grant his prayer for divorce from his estranged wife, Funke, on grounds of adultery and violence.

Osundeyi who resides in Oke-Ado-Liberty area in Ibadan, contended that he abandoned his home for his safety.

“Funke’s parents did not take any bride price from me, but her lifestyle since we started living together as husband and wife has been full of horror and unpleasant experiences.

“I’ve caught her red-handed with a man in my bedroom. The man escaped.

“She is into diabolical things,” he said.

Osundeyi said Funke was ill-tempered and engaged in physical fights at the slightest provocation.

Funke, in her defence, denied all allegations levelled against her.

She accused her husband of eloping with his mistress.

“My lord, I have been the sole provider for my family. In fact, Osundeyi beats me,” Funke said.

Delivering judgment, the President of the Court, Mrs S.M. Akintayo held that there was no marital contract between the couple since bride price or dowry which is an essential requirement was not given.

“There is no marriage to be dissolved as a result,” she held.

She, however, ordered Osundeyi to pay N10,000 as the children’s monthly feeding allowance.

She directed the couple to be jointly responsible for the children’s education and restrained Funke from harassing and intimidating Osundeyi.

Lawal, who resides in Rigasa area, told the court that Aliyu had left the responsibility of providing for the family to her for two years.

“My father-in-law used to help us. But since he died two years ago, my husband has refused to get a job.

“My mother stepped in to help us. I am tired. The responsibility is too much on me. I want him to change and be responsible but if he refuses, I will leave him,” she said.

“I lost my means of livelihood. I am ready to get a job and start providing for my family,” he said.

President of the court, Chief Ademola Odunade, dissolved the marriage after Faseyitan admitted that she asked a witch doctor to “tie her husband spiritually to milk him dry.”

Delivering judgment, Odunade said: “Men and women intending to get married should seek God’s approval in their relationship before forging ahead.”

He said that he dissolved the union in the interest of peace.

The judge granted custody of the two children to Faseyitan.

The arbitrator ordered Kolawole to pay N6,000 monthly for the children’s upkeep.

Earlier, Faseyitan said: “I never wished death on my husband. All I wanted was to keep him in bondage and make him sick, until he serves his purpose.

“I only told the witch doctor so that people would be convinced that his second wife was responsible for the calamity that befell him,” she said.

Earlier, Kolawole, a factory worker prayed for the dissolution of his 15-year-old marriage on grounds that his wife was into black magic.

“I did everything possible to please her. But it was not enough. I abandoned the home to her when she confessed to me,” he said.

He tendered the recorded conversation between his wife and the alleged witch doctor as exhibit before the court.

A fish trader, Mrs Toyin Bello, has petitioned an Ile-Tuntun Customary Court in Ibadan to dissolve her 16-year-old marriage to Mr Dotun Bello on grounds of 10 years of sex starvation, lack of productivity and irresponsibility.

Toyin, a resident of Soka area in Ibadan, told the court that when she could no longer bear the shame of childlessness, she compromised righteousness and got pregnant for another man to shield her husband from shame of old age.

She added that about six years after the death of the legitimate child she had for Bello, he adamantly refused to make sexual advances to her and she became worried.

“Then, I started running from pillar to post; seeking spiritual and other available solutions towards getting pregnant for him.

“Dotun himself went to the hospital, but he never showed me the result of the test conducted on him in spite of my numerous demands.

“When Dotun was not at home one day, I saw the result where he hid it and it read: `unproductive due to low count discharge`.

“With age not on my side any longer, I did the needful by secretly getting pregnant for another man so as to make him happy.

“Immediately after delivery, Dotun started misbehaving as he became grossly irresponsible and hostile to me and to the child.

“In fact, for the past 10 years now, he hasn’t slept on the same bed with me let alone touch me and I’m already feeling the trauma.

“Despite Dotun’s disaffection and irresponsibility to me, he is also taking steps to kill me so as to inherit my house and claim the child that doesn’t belong to him.

“That is the reason why I have fled home to start sleeping in our church at Asi area in Ibadan.

“My lord, I cannot continue to waste my time with Dotun; age is no longer on my side; please dissolve our union,’’ Toyin cried.

Bello, however, opposed the suit to dissolve the 16-year-old marriage, praying the court to help pacify his wife who he described as a rare gem by being merciful to him.

He accepted that he once had low count discharge, but he quickly pointed out that he had since taken care of himself.

“My lord, Toyin denied me my conjugal rite most of the times, usually complaining that she was tired having worked all through the day.

“In fact, there was a particular night I broke the door into her bedroom, but she was shouting that I wanted to rape her.

“The only mistake I made was that I didn’t report the incident to her relatives,’’ he stated.

In his ruling, the Court President, Chief Henry Agbaje, requested the duo to produce more evidence to substantiate their claims while urging them to involve their relatives in saving their marriage from collapsing.

He adjourned the case to December 29 for continuation of hearing.

A nurse, Shukurat Adewumi, on Monday sought the dissolution of her 17-year-old marriage to her husband, Adewale, in a Customary Court sitting at Mapo in Ibadan on grounds that he forced her to have 15 abortions.

Shukurat, a mother of three, made the claim in her counter argument before Chief Ademola Odunade, the court’s president .

“He (husband) forced me to have abortion 15 times, putting my life at risk.

“He denied paternity of my three children.

“Some years ago when he left me to live with his concubine, Adewale returned home well ill and I took care of him.

“For the past two years, he declined paternity of our last child and recently came home to steal the only gas cooker we have.

“Adewale smashed the cylinder on my forehead because I tried to prevent him from taking it away.

“I fainted and was hospitalized, his parents and relatives are all aware of his evil against me.

“Adewale has married two wives elsewhere,” Shukurat said.

In his earlier account, Adewale, a factory worker said that he filed the suit due to his wife’s constant threat on his life.

“Never did I know that she was a hooligan and street fighter when I got married to her.

“She has caused me so much embarrassment and I can no longer withstand it.

“I want custody of my children if she remarries,” Adewale stated.

Delivering judgment, Odunade who was represented by Alhaji Suleiman Apanpa dissolved the marriage in the interest of peace.

He awarded custody of the three children to the respondent and ordered the petitioner to pay N15,000 as their monthly feeding allowance.

He also directed Adewale to be responsible for their education and other welfare.

A teacher, Mrs Idowu Oluokun, on Tuesday told a Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan to dissolve her 16-year-old marriage to her husband, Oyetunji, instead of sharing him with a second wife.

Idowu, who made the submission in her counter argument before Chief Ademola Odunade, the court’s president, added that her husband was not trustworthy.

She further said that soon after she gave birth to her child, Oyetunji told her that he had married another wife whom his relatives preferred because she was from his community.

“He further told me that he had decided to be shuttling between my home and that of his new wife.

“I was mad with anger because that was never our initial agreement and plan and I could not bear the shame.

“I later told Oyetunji to stick to his new wife permanently because I cannot share him.

“Ever since, Oyetunji refused to cater for the only child between us until recently when he resurfaced to claim the child.

“He only managed to send N30,000 to buy the child’s WASSCE form, but never knew how he sat for all the exams and gained admission to the university.

“However, if the court should grant him custody of the child, I pray for a refund of all that I have spent on him in the past 16 years at N2,800 per day.

“This is not forgetting the fact that I borrowed from the bank and a cooperative society to secure admission for the boy,” Idowu said.

Earlier in his testimony, Oyetunji, a resident of Ogbomoso, identified lack of love, distrust and irresponsible behaviour on the part of his wife as the reasons for filing the divorce suit.

“My lord, it is clear that Idowu doesn’t love me.

“I stopped sending her money for the child’s upkeep last year because she keeps overbilling me.

“I know quite well that one does not need more than N17,000 to buy a WASSCE form in a public secondary school, but Idowu said that she needed N30,000 and I sent it to her.

“The child had disclosed to me that he wants to be with me, but she keeps preventing him,” Oyetunji said.

He, however, refused to comment on the allegations made against him by Idowu.

In his judgment, Odunade, the president of the court, condemned the petitioner’s attitude of dumping his wife, Idowu, for another woman only to return to claim the child of the marriage.

He consequently dissolved the union and awarded custody of the child to Idowu.

The court also ordered Oyetunji to pay N10,000 as the child’s monthly feeding allowance in addition to being responsible for his education and other welfare needs.

An Upper Area Court in Makurdi on Wednesday dissolved the marriage between Jennifer Ojeka and Joseph, on grounds that he starves his wife of sex.

Delivering judgment, the judge, Ms Rose Iyorshe, held that evidence before the court showed that the marriage had broken down completely.

Iyorshe ordered Ojeka to return the bride price paid by Joseph.

Ojeka instituted a divorce case against her estranged husband, Joseph on grounds that he beats her up at any little provocation and denies her of sex.

“I have tried everything possible to make the marriage work but all efforts failed,” the petitioner told the court.

She said that she married Joseph in 2012 under the Calabar Marriage Law and Custom.

The respondent who refused to honour court summons, however, sent an account number to the court for the petitioner to pay back the bride price.
