Organisers of the 2024 edition of Beatz Awards have honoured music producer, ID Cabasa, and Afro hip-pop legend, D’Banj, for their outstanding contributions to the Nigerian music industry.

The award event took place on Saturday night at Muson Centre in Lagos.

The awards ceremony had the theme: “Empowering the Next Generation.”

According to the CEO of Beatz Awards, Elijah John, this year’s edition is specifically designed to celebrate emerging talent and innovators within the industry, while also acknowledging the achievements of veterans.

“We are proud to honour ID Cabasa and D’Banj for their remarkable contributions to the music industry. Their dedication, creativity, and perseverance have inspired a generation of musicians and music lovers alike.

“The music world cannot be successful without the producers, so ID Cabasa is a legend in his own right. This is long time coming.

“I think the world needs to celebrate ID Cabasa more for the works he has put for the growth of the industry, without ID Cabasa we won’t have Olamide, Lord of Ajasa, 9ice and host of them that he has groomed.

“Secondly, D’Banj is a pioneer, he sold our Afrobeats to the global audience. We have to give it to him, 20 years in the game and still counting, it’s a big up to him,” he said.

John also highlighted the importance of Beatz Award to the growth of music in Nigeria as he described it as an award in recognition of excellence.

“It is the passion for the young people responsible for the longevity of the awards because it is important that we have a healthy industry.

“We now have a world that everyone wants to be an artiste, forgetting that they can also be a music producer and be successful, or journalist and also be successful.

“We need to change the narrative to making it seem that only artistes can be successful,” John said.

The music enthusiast while relating to the dreams of having the awards more on global stage, said he looked up to the time when Nigeria would be a centre of attraction for music awards.

READ ALSO: Dangote Cement Ibese fetes senior citizens in host communities

“What I understand about the global perspective is a bit different because we have to focus on our own indigenous things as any global success we have is not relatable to our growth in the economy.

“We have to focus on our own that people should come to us rather than we going to them.

“For Beatz Awards, we will keep improving so that Africans can come to Nigeria, the world will come to Nigeria and celebrate the Beatz Awards,” John said.

The notable categories at the award included the Don Jazzy New Discovery Producer of the Year, honouring future disruptors.

Smirnoff Female Producer of the Year, recognising women who make significant contributions to the creative landscape.

Other recipients of the Beatz Awards include: Male Producer of the Year won by Phyno featuring Burna Boy – Jaysnths for the song: Do I (Remix).

It was a night of glitz and glamour on Friday as Nigerian singer and rapper, Oladapo Oyebanjo, popularly known as “D’banj”, celebrated his 20 years of musical excellence in a sophisticated ceremony.

D’banj got the attention of bigwigs in the Nollywood and Nigerian music scene as he took the celebration held at Vaniti Lagos, Victoria Island, to another level entirely.

The event witnessed guests and fans mime along while D’banj’s songs from 2004 were played to their delight.

Among the celebrities that turned up at the event were : Clarence Peters, legendary music video director; Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele; Afrobeats musician, Femi Kuti; Timaya; ID Cabasa; Kenny Ogungbe; Bisola Aiyeola and Mr Macaroni.

Others were: Ini Edo; Tobi Bakre; Ruggedman as well as Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture and many others.

Dbanj arrived the venue for the celebration in a black outfit complemented with a mini gray-coloured jacket, as a cultural troupe welcomed him with his 2006 debut musical track, “Mobolowowon”.

His wife, Lineo Didi, and his parents also graced the occasion adorning beautiful outfits.

Music Executive and Founder of Kennyis Music, Kenny Ogungbe, congratulated D’banj while acknowledging his resilience and hard work.

He said: “Congratulations to D’banj for being on stage for 20 years, he started with Mobolowowon and then Tongolo with so much energy and so many songs after that, and he is still standing very strong, very energetic and still a great entertainer.

“The solid energy behind his performances is something one cannot compare to anything. So, congratulations to him. May God keep on blessing him and he will grow to 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 years on stage.

“Look at Sunny Ade, he is still there, we pray for same energy for him in Jesus’ name.”

Also, actress Funke Akindele commended D’banj’s good heart and generosity as she recalled how the “Koko Master” encouraged her to make her 2009 film, “Jennifer” into an episodic play.

Akindele said D’banj assisted her with a lump sum to go ahead and produce more episodes of Jennifer, adding that that was the push that gave birth to “The Return of Jennifer.

“And till date, the brand is still relevant. Christmas 2024, we are coming up with “Everybody Loves Jennifer”.

“So, this gentleman here, God used him to speak to me to have the Jennifer brand. I want to celebrate you D’banj, you were always there for me. I pray you will always be a force to reckon with. Congratulations D’banj.”

Still celebrating the Koko Master’s musical greatness, Ayo Animashaun, Founder of Hip TV, who presented a special gift to D’banj, said, “I like to say thank you so much for all you have done for the Nigerian music industry and thank you for all you do now and what you are going to do in the future. Thank you.”

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, has confirmed the arrest and detention of Mr. Oladipo Daniel Oyebanjo, otherwise known by his stage name D’Banj, over the investigation of fraud associated with N-Power Programme.

The arrest was confirmed on Wednesday by ICPC in a statement by its spokesperson, Mrs. Azuka Ogugua, and made available to FrontPage.

The N-Power is a scheme established by President Muhammadu Buhari on June 8, 2016, to address the issues of youth unemployment and empowerment, and help increase social development.

The statement by ICPC reads in part:

“In line with its mandate, the commission had received numerous petitions on the diversion of N-Power funds running into billions of naira following the approval and release of such funds to the beneficiaries by the federal government.

“Many N-Power beneficiaries had complained over the non-receipt of the monthly funds in spite of payment by the government.

“About 10 persons have been invited by the ICPC over the last few months in connection with the N-Power fraud, and have been granted administrative bail after their detention.

“Several invitations to Mr. Oladipo Daniel Oyebanjo, to appear before a team of investigators were ignored and not honoured.

“Mr. Oyebanjo turned in himself and was taken into custody at the ICPC Headquarters on Tuesday, 6th December, 2022, and is currently assisting the investigators to unravel the circumstances of the fraud allegations by the petitioners.

“The investigation will be all-encompassing and also be extended to other collaborators of the fraud and the banks where the beneficiaries’ accounts are domiciled.”

ICPC said the statement it issued became necessary to set the record straight “in view of the reports awash in the media.”

According to the anti-graft agency, “the investigation is ongoing and the Commission prefers not to preempt its outcome and also avoid the frenzy of a media trial.”

By KAZEEM AKINTUNDE

I’m yet to fully recover from the sudden and shocking death of three-year-old Ifeanyi Adeleke, son of singer, David Adeleke, a.k.a Davido. If there is one death that brought grief to so many Nigerians, that of Ifeanyi stood out as one. Handsome, with an innocence that is endearing, Ifeanyi did not deserve to die at such a young age under such unfortunate circumstance. Even when his death was confirmed by the police, many were still hopeful that he was in a coma and a miracle could still happen. But who are we to question God? I only hope and pray that Davido and Chioma will come out of this ordeal stronger and will be able to move on without much damage to their mental health. I am a parent and I know how it feels to lose a loved one.

His tragic death through drowning, won’t be the first to be heard among rich Nigerian superstars who have decided to add a swimming pool to their homes as one of those luxurious items to have for their maximum comfort.

While the swimming pools, bathtubs and tiles are all modern-day amenities to give us comfort at home, we should be careful and have it at the back of our minds that they could be potential agents of death.

In June 2018, another music legend, D’banj, also lost his one-year-old son, Daniel Oyebanjo under similar circumstances. The toddler drowned in a pool at the singer’s residence in Ikoyi. D’banj was in Los Angeles attending the 2018 BET Awards when death snuck into his home to snatch away his precious son.

These unfortunate incidents have created a debate over the point of having a swimming pool installed at home. While some say having one is okay, they expressed regret that the major casualties have been children below the age of five. Due to their hyperactive nature, they are most curious about water and not aware of the danger it poses to them. The same phenomenon is rampant in the United States of America and other countries of the world.

Drowning is still the leading cause of death by unintentional injury in kids ages one through five in the U.S., according to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is also a leading cause of accidental death for those aged five to 19. Indeed, nearly 900 children die every year in the U.S alone and thousands more suffer non-fatal injuries – from incidents in pools, oceans, lakes, streams, bathtubs, and even buckets of water. However, the majority of young children who drown do so in home swimming pools.

While pools are an easy way to keep kids entertained for hours, it must be remembered that water has no mercy. “Having an unfenced pool is like having an uncaged lion in your backyard,” says Morgan Miller, wife of Olympian, Bode Miller, and mom of Emmy, whose tragic death at 19 months in a friend’s pool catapulted childhood drowning into the national spotlight in that part of the world. “To a child, that big furry animal could look like something fun to play with. It’s appealing and tempting. But we, as adults know that a lion is deadly and can kill your child.”

“Thankfully, all of us have the power to keep kids safe. Indeed, as parents, we need to discuss the dangers involved in dipping into the water with our kids. We should talk to them about all aspects of water safety. That is to those kids that are old enough to understand the danger lurking in that inviting water. But to those that are still young, to keep them safe is the responsibility of we adults and we should not shy away from that task.

READ ALSO: Ekweremadu and the rest of us, By Kazeem Akintunde

“The real danger, however, is the fact that nearly 70 per cent of childhood drownings happen when kids aren’t swimming; they may wander over to a neighbour’s yard, slip through an unlocked back door during playtime, or tumble into the pool while wandering about.

We should let them know that it is not right to go in or near the water without a grown-up adult around. Again, if, during a family gathering, the kids want to swim, it is mandatory to appoint a parent as a ‘water watcher’ to be on the lookout for the kids. When everybody’s watching, nobody’s watching. That’s why safety organizations urge parents and caregivers to take turns being on official “water-watching duty” in group-swim situations.

Aside from that, it is also important to know what a child in distress looks like. Kids drown silently and quickly, often when they are vertical in the water with their heads tipped back. Unlike what you see in movies, a child rarely splashes, flails their arms, or yells for help. Being a good water watcher is like being a good lifeguard. Once selected as a water watcher, you must put away your phones and concentrate on the kids. Again, with a swimming pool at home, it is mandatory to have an emergency plan in place. Know a little bit about basic CPR and actions you must take immediately if there is a crisis. Even if a child doesn’t need CPR after being submerged, having water in their lungs can still lead to serious trouble. Watch out for coughing, lethargy, and rapid breathing, and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask your child’s doctor.

If you do have a swimming pool at home, also consider surrounding it with a fence, covering it when not in use, and removing the steps or ladder once swim time is over.

Install a fence that is at least 4 feet high around all four sides of the pool. The fence should not have openings or protrusions that a young child could use to get over, under, or through. Make sure that the gate leading to your pool is self-closing and self-latching, and that it opens out. Latches should be above a child’s reach, and the space between the bottom of the fence and the ground should be less than 4 inches. Never prop open a gate to the pool area.

Kids are fast, curious, and mobile, and will always want to explore their surroundings. It is our duty as adults to ensure that we watch over them like an eagle and ensure that they are safe at all times.

While the swimming pool has become a necessary evil at home for kids, the bathtub has also turned out to be a killer of most adults and the elderly in our society. The combination of bathtubs and tiles in toilets has sent many to their early graves in Nigeria. I took a conscious decision while constructing my residence not to have a bathtub at home. Though Madam of the house kicked against the idea, I stood my ground after series of explanations to convince her failed. My stand was due to what Prince Bola Ajibola went through at that time.

Prince Ajibola, former Justice Minister and Attorney-General, had slipped and had six of his ribs broken while having a bath in a bathtub. That was in 2002. He survived, after being flown abroad for medical treatment. He survived because people were in the house at the time he fell and help was quickly rendered both in Nigeria and outside the country. Luckily for him, money for such expensive treatment was not a problem.

If Prince Ajibola was lucky, a former Nigerian ambassador to the UK, Ambassador J.T. Kolo was not that lucky as he died from injury he sustained after slipping in his bathroom. Ambassador Kolo was by himself when the incident occurred and there was no one to rescue him. He was found dead hours later by a domestic staff inside his Minna, Niger State home. He was 74.

Another person who did not survive her bathroom fall due to a slippery tub and wet tiles was the wife of former Police IGP, Micheal Okiro. Hera Okiro slipped and fell in a freak accident in her bathroom. At the time of her death, Mrs. Okiro was only 61 years old.

Also, the entertainment industry recorded a similar disaster as Nollywood star, Uduak Akrah in August 2018, died from an injury she sustained when she fell after taking her bath. Though she was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, she eventually gave up the ghost.

Former United States Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, however, survived her fall in the bathtub, but not without fracturing a bone. Hillary was in India on a visit when she slipped and fractured her wrist in the bathtub at a five-star resort where she was staying. She was taken to a hospital in the city of Jodphur where she underwent an X-ray and a CT scan that confirmed a hairline fracture of her right wrist.

Not to be caught off guard, a businessman, based in Benin, Edo State, Daniel Kings, vowed that he would not fix tiles in his bathroom when he has resources to build a house for himself. “From what happened to one of my neighbours in my former house and the stories I hear from time to time, I have vowed not to have anything to do with tiles in my bathroom. It is beautiful but it has killed many people and put many others in pain. I cannot use my money to buy what will kill me or any member of my family. God forbid,” he said.

But Mr. Jolayemi Ayobami, who deals in building materials in Atan, Ogun State, said many domestic accidents were a result of the wrong use of tiles by the tilers handling the job.

“This is my 14th year in this business. Tiles come in various sizes and shapes. Some of the surfaces are rough while others are very smooth. It is the duty of the tiler or builder to choose which of the tiles is appropriate on the floor or in the bathroom.

“But what we usually witness is people going for beautiful and fancy tiles without considering the implications when fixed on the floor. But building professionals with years of experience know the right materials for the right position.

“I heard of a woman who slipped right in her sitting room, fell, and hit her head on a pillar. The woman died on the spot. It was later discovered that her granddaughter who came visiting poured water on the floor, which the unsuspecting grandma stepped on. Adults could be that careful, but what about children who are always playful and carefree?

If you do have a swimming pool at home, also consider surrounding it with a fence, covering it when not in use, and removing the steps or ladder once swim time is over.

“Sometimes, you can blame those handling the buildings, some other times, some property owners readily settle for cheap building materials in order to cut costs. This often happens when the project is meant to be rented out by the owner.

“Thank God that we now have tiles that are not slippery, even if you pour water or other liquid contents on them. Although the designs are more expensive, it is better that house owners go for them to avert dangers of any kind,” Ayobami said.

While the swimming pools, bathtubs and tiles are all modern-day amenities to give us comfort at home, we should be careful and have it at the back of our minds that they could be potential agents of death. The only way to enjoy the comfort they offer is by ensuring that we do the right things at all times and observe all safety precautions so that they would not become a source of sorrow to us at any age.

May the soul of Ifeanyi rest in peace.

See you next week.

The event is scheduled to hold tomorrow at the Muri-Okunola Okunola Park in Victoria Island, Lagos.

A statement from the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture says Lagosians and fun seekers will have a memorable event as A-list Nigerian artists have indicated their readiness to perform to the delight of all attendees.

They have also assured Lagosians and Nigerians of the best of entertainment which Lagos has been known for over the years, the statement reads in part.

Some of the artistes billed to perform at the open-field event include Davido, Tiwa Savage, Ayra Starr, Teni, D’banj, among others, while veteran musicians like Dede, Kwam 1 and Shina Peters will also make special appearances.

Confirming her presence at the upcoming event, Teniola Apata, better known as Teni, a Nigerian singer, songwriter and entertainer enjoined Nigerians to anticipate the best of entertainment from her at the show.

“I can’t wait to show the people on ‘Eko on Show’, see you guys there on the 15th of October,” Teni added.

The famous female Talking Drummer, Araoluwa speaking on the October 15 event, said, “We are very happy to have this festival in Lagos now, it’s long awaited because we have been shut down for too long and so we’re very elated.”

Also as part of the event, Lanre Da Silva Ajayi, a Nigerian fashion designer and founder of eponymous label among other designers would also be at the event to showcase some of her eponymous label including couture, ready-to-wear, jewelries, hairpieces, metallic fabrics, lace and African patterns, among others.

Additionally, there would be a display of classic artworks by Nike Art Gallery, which is arguably the largest of its kind in West Africa, boasting of a collection of about 8,000 diverse artworks from various Nigerian artists.

It should be recalled that, earlier, during the unveiling of the event with a Press Conference held at the Muri-Okunola Park, Victoria Island, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Pharm. Mrs Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, said that the show was one of the avenues Lagos State was using to sell the rich potentials of the state to the world.

Eko on Show is an entertainment event designed to gradually restore activities to the entertainment scene since the advent of COVID-19 and also celebrate Nigeria’s 61st Independence Anniversary.

Nigeria’s popular musician, Oladapo Oyebanjo (a.k.a D’Banj) says 2021 will be marked in grand style as he plans to launch his new album “Ikebe” before the end of the first quarter.

D’Banj made this known in Abuja during a listening brunch of the album, which also had other tracks like “Banga” and “Antidote”.

“Ikebe”, which literally means buttock, was produced by Nigeria’s talented producer Rexxie.

D’Banj said he delivered the melodious number to create awareness on the need for the male gender to thread carefully this year, as heard on the track, after a turbulent 2020 ended with testimony of him welcoming his second child.

According to the artiste, the track says “oh Lord, help me, I no wan sin. I tell my body say you go die for this “Ikebe”.

“So much has happened in my life in a short time, which appeared to be long; so this album and others like ‘Banga’ and ‘Antidote’ are about my personal life and I need to express myself.

“I want to use the track “Ikebe” to make a statement and preach what I stand for, which is respecting women and their rights, after my wife and I welcomed our second child and first baby girl.

“I need to use them to relaunch myself into the music world and I was inspired by three things.

“Going through life in the last three years, it has been full of God’s blessings because he restored me after the death of my son.

“People ask me how I deal with pain of the loss and what was going through my mind and these tracks tell exactly how I dealt with it,” D’Banj said.

He expressed appreciation to his family and friends, who stood by him in time of grief, noting that God restored their lives through their prayers and messages.

The music icon also hailed his songwriters especially the one based in Loss Angeles, U.S, who inspired another track “Antidote”.

He said love was the antidote that helped him and his wife to overcome the death of their son.

The music producer, Rexxie, said the songs would get people dancing and can make one feel happy and reflect on past issues.
