“Big Brain Naija”(#BB9JA), a reality TV show geared towards discovering, showcasing and celebrating creative talents across Nigeria, is set to debut, its organisers have said.

The show is organised by Big Brain Productions in collaboration with DAAR Communications Plc.

The organisers said at a news conference and partnership signing agreement on Thursday in Abuja, that the show would be staged in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

They said the reality show, scheduled to hit screens across Nigeria from October, would be aired on Africa Independent Television, AIT.

Mr Kel Ameobi, Chief Executive Officer, Big Brain Productions, said the initiative was to celebrate the ingenuity and passion of the Nigerian youth.

According to him, the show is conceived to promote national harmony, besides its entertainment value.

“Big Brain Naija show was created with a simple but very powerful vision: to build a reality TV show where intelligence meets entertainment.

“For too long we’ve seen and we have also heard our airwaves filled up with entertainment that promotes all sorts of things, very unspeakable things.

“We’ve watched as youths on different platforms fight and entertain us with emptiness, whereas the brightest amongst us have no stage to shine.

“Big Brain Naija is not a show of noise but of ideas. It’s not a house of immorality but a stage for innovation, to celebrate ideas, creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship,” he said.

READ ALSO: International Police Academy appoints NDLEA officer as Director

In his remarks, Mr Marcel Anyalechi, Chief Executive Officer, DAAR Communications Plc., lauded the initiative, saying it would create a desired impact in the entertainment industry as it blends creativity and innovation.

“I commend you so much for taking this project to this stage, and for us at DAAR Communications Plc., we express our total commitment to this project.

“We are glad that we are part of the project, and we are going to use all our media platforms to promote it to the Nigerian public, Africans and the rest of the world.

“I congratulate you on this initiative, and I believe that at the end of season one or two of this project, it will bring smiles to the faces of Nigerians,” he said.

Earlier, Ossai Ilome, Chief Operating Officer, Big Brain Naija, said season one of the show would bring 37 contestants from the 36 states of the federation, including the FCT.

He said, among other innovations, the show would be anchored by AI-powered judges, making it the first of its kind in Africa.

According to him, the winner of the show will go home with N30 million and a car as the grand prize.

“While we give credence to the entertainment industry and to those who have promoted Nigeria as a country, the time has come for us to showcase Nigerians who are very intelligent, industrious and visionary.

“These are attributes that Nigerians are known all over the world; they are known as intelligent people, industrious people and visionary people.”

However, he said, most of the reality TV shows we have in the country do not seem to reflect this culture associated with our people.

“The Big Brain Naija reality TV show is coming with a lot of value not just for the people, but for the country, to demonstrate that Nigerians are indeed exceptional.

“Although the show is largely focused on intelligence and impact, of course, we are not leaving out the aspect of entertainment, because it is a reality show,” he said.

Founder of DAAR Communications Plc, Raymond Dokpesi, on Tuesday, at the Federal High Court Abuja, opened his defence in the alleged N2.1 billion fraud charge preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

EFCC arraigned Dokpesi in 2015, on a seven-count charge, bordering on alleged N2.1 billion fraud, said to be payments received from the office of the former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

At the resumed hearing, the prosecuting counsel, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), informed the court that the matter had been adjourned for Dokpesi to open his defence.

Dokpesi was called as the first defence witness and led in evidence by his counsel, Mike Ozekhome (SAN).

Dokpesi told the court that he was a marine engineer by training and founder of Daar Investment and Holding, the parent company of Daar Communications.

He further told the court that the company which had been in business in the past 32 years for print media and 28 years for electronic media, served governments at all levels, business entities, individuals and corporate organisations.

“All that any of our customer needs to do is reach out to our canvassers through our marketing and sales officers and management to book for airtime on the product they want advertised.

“There is no special treatment, as it is one and the same procedure for everybody; Federal Government, state government or individuals,” he said.

He also told the court that the company had a brochure with advert rates where corporate organisations and individuals could peruse to pick the package that they were most comfortable with.

Ozekhome tendered the brochure as an exhibit and it was admitted in evidence.

When he, however, sought to tender a receipt issued to Nasarawa State Government by Daar Communications, the prosecutor objected on the grounds that the document was irrelevant to the case.

“The receipts were not issued to the Federal Government and are not related to the sum of the charge which is N2.1 billion.

“All the receipts were issued in 2019, while proceedings in this suit are still pending, contrary to Section 83 of the Evidence Act.”

The prosecutor insisted that since the documents sought to be tendered were photocopies, the people with the original receipts should be subpoenaed to produce the original receipts.

The judge, Justice John Tsoho, adjourned the matter until January 22 for continuation of trial.

Barely some hours after its licence was suspended by the National Broadcasting Corporation, NBC, DAAR Communications’ African Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower are back on air.

The commencement of operations followed the verdict of a Federal High Court which nullified the suspension of the licence of the broadcasting company.

While ordering the reopening of the stations under DAAR Communications, the judge, Inyang Ekwo, summoned the NBC and Ministry of Information over the suspension of the company’s licence.

NBC shut down the stations on Thursday.

According to the Director-General of NBC, Modibbo Kawu, who addressed a press conference in Abuja on the issue, the licence was suspended following the failure of the organisation to obey broadcasting rules.

He said the action became necessary after the organisation refused to heed warnings that had been issued at different times.

“Today the 6th of June, 2019, AIT/Rapower embarked on use of inflammatory, divisive, inciting broadcasts, and media propaganda against the government and, the NBC for performing its statutory functions of regulating the broadcast industry in Nigeria.

“Consequently, after several meetings with management of Daar Communications Plc and many letters of warning, the NBC, today 6th June, 2019 took a decision to suspend the licence of Daar Communications Plc for failure to abide by the Commission’s directives, the provisions of the NBC Act Cap N11. The SHUT DOWN order is until further notice.”

Kawu stated further: “In one of our meetings, held on 2nd June, 2017, the Commission expressed its disappointment with the way and manner Hate Speech, divisive and inciting comments are applied in discussion of national issues in breach of the provisions of the NBC Act and Broadcast Code.

“Again, on 15th August, 2017, it became imperative to invite the company for yet another meeting on almost same issues. Furthermore, while addressing another meeting on 7th February, 2018 we highlighted issues of concern to the Commission which indicated that the company had been breaching the provisions of Sections 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 of the broadcast Code. The company’s delegates in their response promised to abate the breaches and comply with the law.

“However, on October 18, 2018, the Commission was disturbed with the manner in which social media issues became part of the mainstream media unedited on AIT/Raypower, and was constrained to issue a generic letter to all broadcast stations on.”

Earlier on Thursday, the founder of DAAR Communication, Raymond Dokpesi, during a press conference, accused the Presidency of attacking his organisation in different ways.

Speaking at the press conference held at the headquarters of the company in Abuja, Dokpesi said the attacks included imposition of fines unduly by the NBC and the demolition of part of its property.
