The 13th edition of the National and 4th International Conference of The Criterion, tagged “Eko Akete 2025” , opens Wednesday, November 13.

The landmark event will take place at Orchid Hotel, Lekki, Lagos, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

This year’s conference, themed “Breaking the Glass Ceiling: Muslim Women Overcoming Economic and Social Challenges,” will convene leading voices, thought leaders, policymakers, scholars, and industry professionals to examine the barriers limiting women’s advancement and to chart actionable pathways for empowering Muslim women to thrive globally.

Speaking on the significance of the event, the Chairman, National Conference Planning Committee, NCPC, Hajia Ibironke Siddqah Ogun (FNVS), emphasized that the Eko Akete 2025 conference would provide participants with practical skills, mentorship opportunities, and exposure to global best practices that would support women in scaling professional and entrepreneurial frontiers.

“We aim to inspire, equip, and connect Muslim women with the resources, networks, and confidence needed to rise beyond limitations. The Criterion has remained consistent in nurturing women of integrity, influence, and impact—this conference reinforces that mission,” Hajia Ogun noted.

The Chief Host of the conference and the International Amirah of the Conference, Alhaja Medina Akanni, described the conference as “a timely platform for reflection, reawakening, and re-strategizing to strengthen the role of Muslim women in nation-building and global development.”

Alhaja Akanni who is also the Deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, added further: “At a time when economic pressure, social stereotypes, and workplace limitations continue to restrict women’s potential, this conference serves as a beacon of hope and a rallying point for women determined to break barriers while upholding Islamic values,” she stated.

Designed to address the concerns of all muslim ladies across different socio-economic strata, the conference will feature keynote addresses by renowned female leaders and scholars; panel sessions with diverse professionals across sectors; master classes on leadership, business scaling, technology, finance, and work-life integration; interactive sessions, exhibitions, and networking opportunities as well as spiritual reflections and value-based mentoring sessions

The Criterion was founded as a platform for Muslim women committed to personal development, professional excellence, community service, and Islamic ethics.

The Criterion (Al-Furqan) has consistently advanced the empowerment of women through education, advocacy, humanitarian initiatives, capacity development, and faith-based leadership training.

With active Usrah branches or local cells across Nigeria and growing international presence, the association continues to influence policies, inspire future leaders, and nurture women who uphold moral uprightness while excelling in diverse fields.

The Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, GOCOP, has visited the acting Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, CG Adewale Adeniyi, in Abuja as part of preparations for its Annual General Conference.

The GOCOP team was led on the visit to the CG by its President, Maureen Chigbo, who spoke about the conference.

The Guild will be holding its Annual General Conference in Abuja for the first time since its inception on October 5, 2023 at Abuja Continental Hotel.

Chigbo, who said the GOCOP is a group made up of top rated journalists who have practised at the highest level in journalism, urged the NCS to ensure synergy with the media, especially since the new helmsman used to be in charge of the Service’s public relations.

Responding to the GOCOP president’s remarks, the customs CG expressed delight over the visit.

Adeniyi was particularly elated to learn that real professionals are the ones within the rank of GOCOP, especially since it is clear it’s made up of former Managing Directors/Editor-in-Chiefs, Editors and Line Editors, who have worked in the newspaper business for at least 10 years before venturing into online journalism practice.

He expressed confidence that the emergence of GOCOP would help in sifting the grains from the chaff in online journalism practice.

With GOCOP, he reasoned, it would be easier to determine who the real professionals in the online business are for proper synergy.

Adeniyi assured the media that he would continue to crave partnership towards achieving the goals of his service.

The GOCOP team included Dotun Oladipo, the immediate past president; Danlami Nmodu, Deputy President; Ken Ugbeche, Vice President, South; Tom Chiahemen, Vice President, North; Collins Edomaruse, General Secretary; and Tajudeen Kareem, an Abuja-based GOCOP member.

The Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Abdullahi Maiwada, was also present at the courtesy visit alongside other officers.

The theme was “Onboarding traditional developers and more into web3”.

As the project manager of the event I want to use this medium as a retrospective of the event.

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Sunday leave for Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, to attend the 15th session of the Conference of the Parties, COP15, of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, UNCCD.

The president’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, confirmed this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Shehu said the conference was aimed at addressing the future of land, regarding desertification, drought, degradation, rights, restoration and implications for national and world economies.

He said the Nigerian leader would join other world leaders at Sofitel Hotel, Abidjan, for the 15th session of the COP15 of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, with the theme, “Land. Life. Legacy: From scarcity to prosperity.”

According to the presidential aide, the convention aims to take action to ensure that land, the lifeline on the planet, continues to benefit present and future generations.

“To achieve the visionary objective of land restoration and balance, COP15 will bring together leaders from governments, the private sector, civil society and other key stakeholders from around the world to drive progress in the future of sustainable management of one of the most precious assets, land.

“The convention will explore links between land and other key development issues, which will be discussed during the high-level segment, including a Heads of States Summit, high-level roundtables and interactive dialogue sessions.

“COP 15 is a key moment in the fight against desertification, land degradation and drought.

“Accordingly, it will build on the findings of the second edition of the Global Land Outlook and offer a concrete response to the interconnected challenges of land degradation, climate change and biodiversity loss as the world steps into the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration,” he said.

He added that drought, land restoration, and related enablers such as land rights, gender equality and youth empowerment were among the top items on the conference agenda.

The president, who is also the President of the Great Green Wall in Africa, will be accompanied on the trip by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, and Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abdullahi.

Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday called on women across the country to embrace a growth mindset and inspire other women to emerge as policy-makers.

She also advocated the adoption of a special system whereby more women were empowered to assume leadership positions in the judiciary, legislative, and executive arms of government.

Sanwo-Olu spoke at the gala night of the ongoing 21st annual National Women’s Conference of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO), held at the Convention Centre, Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

“As women, we must have a growth mindset to ensure that women are properly positioned to inspire other women and ensure that women are in places of policy-making and decision making. We need to have more women in the legislative, judiciary, and executive arms of government,” she said.

Describing women as bankable, dependable, and formidable, the First Lady urged participants to develop their potentials and see how to support other women and girls with the knowledge gained, so far at the conference.

“From our sessions at this conference, some of the words that kept on ringing in my head include the fact that as women, we are bankable, we are dependable, we are available, we are sustainable, we can network, we are mothers that give birth to nations, we are mothers that influence our children, we are mothers that influence fathers at home and so, there are so many potentials inside of us. We have to wake up to our innate abilities as women.

“We have realised that the sky is no longer the limit; every woman here is an ambassador in her home, in her community and so from everything that we have learned, we will not only learn and keep but we have to use it to positively influence the society,” she said.

Sanwo-Olu, who is also the chairman of COWLSO, said the theme of the conference was specially chosen to ensure that women were awake and alive to their responsibilities.

“As you know, our theme this year is awake. In every aspect of life where women are, it is about time that you wake up whether you are a grandma, whether you are a farmer, whether you are a student, whether you are a professional; where ever you find yourself, it is important that we wake up and stop crying over spilled milk and stop believing that we can’t do it,” she said.

She added that as women, conscious efforts must be made to mentor the younger generation and go further to support and sponsor their ideas.

Besides, she commended the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for his numerous support for the female gender in the state, just as she called on all men and boys to equally embrace the ideals of women.

At the event, several thrilling prizes were won by both physical and virtual lucky participants, including a N25million worth 3-bedroom apartment at Sangotedo, Lekki won by a civil servant attached to the Lagos State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, Mrs. Olasunbo Bankole; brand new GAC GS3 SUV won by a shop owner in Surulere, Mrs. Adetoro Ojora-Akintola; and a return ticket to London won by the Director of Administration and Human Resources, Lagos State Agricultural Development Authority, Mrs. Amodu Mary-Ann Adetoro.

The return ticket was won by Adetoro on her wedding anniversary, a development that made Governor Sanwo-Olu, who was in attendance at the event, announce another return ticket to London for Adetoro’s husband, to pave the way for the couple to travel together to celebrate their anniversary.

Lagos State First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, on Saturday led members of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials, COWLSO, on an awareness walk against domestic violence, with a call on women to speak up in defence of other women.

The awareness walk, held on the major streets of Alausa, Ikeja, is part of activities heralding the forthcoming National Women’s Conference, NWC, of COWLSO scheduled to hold from October 26 to 28, 2021 at the Convention Centre, Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

During the walk, COWLSO members displayed placards of various inscriptions such as “Shun gender-based discriminations; Use your words, not your fist; Blame the rapist, not the victim; The Lagos woman is an awake woman; Ji, Ma Sun; Security is everyone’s business, be vigilant; Speak up, seek help, stay safe; It should not hurt to be a child. End Child Abuse; Say no to drug addiction; We say no to terrorism, kidnapping, banditry; stop rape; We have no other country, let’s defend the country we have,” among others.

Speaking in an interview during the walk, the First Lady said it was about time for every woman to look out for the welfare of other women and inspire others.

“The essence of this walk is like a clarion call for all women all over Nigeria. The theme of COWLSO NWC this year is Awake. It is a call for all women so that they can wake up; wake up to be a voice to the voiceless; to ensure that the economy moves forward; to not think that they don’t have a role to play.

“Every woman, whether you are a housewife, whether you are a professional, whether you are a career woman, whether you are a student and so on, we all have a role to play. So, it is about time we are awake from our slumber; we lift each other up; we inspire other women. This is the essence of what we are doing,” she said.

She added that the walk also aligned with the theme of this year’s International Day of the Girl Child celebration, which was commemorated on October 11.

“The theme for the International Day of the girl child has to do with digital awareness and so for our women, whether you are a market woman or not, this is the time we must all become tech-savvy; this is the time we should align with the ‘Z generation’; this is the time we need to speak up; this is the time for every woman whatever you are doing, wherever you are, you need to lend your voice and help to inspire other women out there,” Sanwo-Olu said.
