Mr Michael Adeniran, father of a late student of Chrisland Schools, Ikeja, Whitney, on Monday told an Ikeja High Court that his daughter died in a stadium during the school’s inter-house sports.

Adeniran told the court that he was informed by the school’s nurse that his daughter, aged 12, was already dead in the stadium before she was taken to a hospital.

He said that the nurse told him that the daughter’s eyes were already dilated but she could not pronounce her dead because she was not a doctor.

Lagos State government had on March 31, 2023, charged Chrisland School Ltd., Opebi, and its principal, vice principal and two others for the death of Whitney Adeniran.

The 12-year-old student was allegedly electrocuted on February 9, 2023, during the school’s inter-house sports at Agege Stadium, Lagos State.

The defendants were arraigned before Justice Oyindamola Ogala.

Those charged alongside the school are Ademoye Adewale (a cotton candy vendor), Kuku Fatai, Belinda Amao (Principal), and Victoria Nwatu.

The defendants are standing trial for involuntary manslaughter and reckless and negligent acts.

While being cross-examined on Monday, Adeniran who is the first prosecution witness, said that he could not remember anybody informing him that oxygen was administered on his daughter at the hospital she was taken to.

He was led in evidence by counsel to Chrisland Schools, Mr Bolaji Ayorinde (SAN).

When asked if the student was absent from school on February 2, 2023, due to illness, Adeniran replied, “She was absent from school, but she was not ill.”

The witness said that, on January 20, 2023, the school called his wife (the deceased’s mother) and informed her that Whitney was ill.

He said that his daughter was then taken to Inland Specialist Hospital where a doctor prescribed drugs for her.

He testified that he got to know the name of the drugs from the doctor’s report obtained from the hospital and dated February 16, 2023.

Adeniran listed the drugs as Nitrazepam and Amitriptyline.

When asked if he was informed by the Agege Central Hospital and Diagnostic Ltd. that his daughter died of cardiac arrest, the witness said that he was informed that she died of cardiac arrest.

The witness, however, told the court that he could not remember if the school’s nurse mentioned anything about administering oxygen or cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the deceased.

“The nurse said she tried all she could but my daughter had already died before being taken out of the stadium.

“She said her eyes had already dilated, but she could not pronounce her dead because she was not a doctor,” he said.

Adeniran had testified before the court on May 25, 2023.

Justice Oyindamola Ogala adjourned the case until January 24 for continuation of cross-examination of Adeniran.

By AKIN OLANIYAN

I will ignore the debate about who is to blame for the mess at Chrisland School. Rather I will focus on what interests me because there’s a knowledge gap there.

If like me you can take a step back and dispassionately consider the issues around the mess; you’ll notice the toxic influence of social media and the damage this is doing to our young ones.

Here’s the problem with the attention economy; young girls are desperate to adopt the tested formats that have made Kim Kardashian a ‘goddess’. That format has been proved to be effective by Jane Mena and Tacha just to mention a few. As for young boys; it’s either they want to be the next big sports star or the next big-time musician. Either way, young folks just want to become a celebrity overnight.

If they have ABSOLUTELY must use a smartphone, pay attention to what they do. I advise you check and delete LIKEE application for a start.

They forget that the road to the point where social capital becomes profitable is fraught with minefields. Or that the self-consuming process of lifestyle of a micro-celebrity is psychologically punishing. This is why I pity parents who are so media illiterate that they will allow their underage children uncontrolled access to the Internet.

The young girl at the centre of the mess in Chrisland had access to a smartphone; data and a ring light for her home-made videos posted to Likee.

I know, times have changed. These days, sometimes teachers require young folks to do take-home assignments that require them to surf the Internet. My generation didn’t have these pressures and the unnecessary exposure was good for us.

These times call for different approaches to parenting. I reckon the parents of the young girl should be looking at themselves to see where they have failed.

Here’s a free advice to them and other parents with children under 18.

Chrisland Schools

If your children do not ABSOLUTELY need a smartphone, then withdraw it. If you need to be able to reach them in case your family is always on the move, give them a feature phone.

If they have ABSOLUTELY must use a smartphone, pay attention to what they do. I advise you check and delete LIKEE application for a start. Initially released in July 2017 as LIKE video, the recently rebranded Singapore-based app is challenging TikTok for dominance in the fast-growing video space. LIKEE offers an array of attractions for young users: filters, stickers and cutting edge special effects. It also allows kids to live stream to their fan base.

If you need to be able to reach them in case your family is always on the move, give them a feature phone.

Problem is, LIKEE is too PERMISSIVE and was described as “a paedophile’s paradise,” by Family Zone cyber expert and prominent child psychologist, Michael Carr-Greg. He goes on to add, “Predators are not stupid, they know exactly where the kids are and how to find them.” Among other problems with LIKEE, Family Zone notes that:

Accounts can’t be made private

Users can filter a search by gender

There is no age verification process

Mature and risky content abounds

In-app parental controls are ineffectual

In monitoring you children, also constantly check what they do on Instagram and Tik Tok.

Whatever you do, do not encourage your children to start building a career as micro celebrities until they are fully grown and ready for the psychologically draining process. In in doubt, ask Jane Mena and Tacha how they are coping.

The 47 years old Supervisor of Chrisland School, Lagos, Adegboyega Adenekan, charged with a case of defiling a two-year and 11-month-old pupil of the school has been jailed.

He is to spend the next 60 years in prison.

The verdict was given on Thursday by the presiding judge of an Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court, Sybil Nwaka.

The court found him guilty of defiling the pupil, even as he pleaded not guilty.

Said the judge: “I hereby sentence Adegboyega Adenekan to 60 years imprisonment. This is the sentence of the court.”

The judge described Adenekan as not only wicked, but “conscienceless and an animal who is not worthy of walking on the streets of Lagos.”

Delivering her judgement, she said: “Schools should not cover up teachers who sexually abuse children. Parents should not be carried away by aesthetics of schools. This case may just be the tip of the iceberg as a lot of our children are suffering in silence.

“Parents should be bold enough to confront teachers and school management because a lot of our children are suffering in silence.

“I advise or recommend that the education and social welfare ministry workers should visit schools randomly to give them a check.”

The date for today’s verdict was announced on October 18 after prosecution counsel, Mr Babajide Boye, and defence counsel, Mrs M. Obifarinde, adopted their final written addresses.

Although Adenekan was said to have committed the offence in 2016, he was arraigned on January 29, 2018.

Seven witnesses, including the pupil and her mother, testified for the prosecution, which closed its case on March 14.

Defence provided five witnesses, including Adenekan and the head teacher of the nursery arm of Chrisland School located at the Victoria Garden City, VGC, Lagos.

The defence closed its case on June 26.

According to the prosecution, the defendant defiled the pupil by having sexual intercourse with her, in contravention of Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, which provides for life sentence for child defilement.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adenekan, who was arraigned on January 29, 2018, however, pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of child defilement.

Seven witnesses, including the pupil and her mother, testified for the prosecution, which closed its case on March 14.
