The federal government will, today, launch a “See Something, Say Something, Do Something” campaign for the protection of children in Nigeria.

President Bola Tinubu made this known on Tuesday in his message on the occasion of this year’s Children Day.

He said the campaign would make every Nigerian to become a child protection champion.

The president said the campaigned emanated from the reality that children’s safety could not be hinged on government policies alone, but on community vigilance.

He gave assurance to the children that they mattered and would be protected.

His words: “To our beloved children: you matter. Your dreams matter. Your voices matter. No one has the right to hurt, silence, or diminish you. If you are bullied or harmed, speak up—you will be heard and protected.”

The president called on all partners, stakeholders, and duty-bearers to sustain and deepen the collective efforts, stressing that child rights must be embedded in all budgets, plans, and policies.

“I commend states taking bold steps for our children’s welfare and urge those yet to act: now is the time. Our children are not just statistics—they are the heart of our nation.

“Let today mark a renewed movement to build a Nigeria where no child suffers in silence, no child is left behind, and every child grows in dignity, peace, and love,” the president declared.

The president spoke on the efforts by his government to ensure the protection of children in the country.

Said he: “My fellow Nigerians and our dear children, we prioritise child protection under the Renewed Hope Agenda. This includes the full implementation of Nigeria’s National Plan of Action on Ending Violence Against Children (2024–2030), which I recently launched. The plan provides a comprehensive roadmap to prevent abuse, prosecute perpetrators, and support victims, backed by robust financing and multi-sectoral coordination.

“We are further taking decisive steps to prevent, detect, and respond to all forms of violence against children. As a government, we have initiated a comprehensive review of the Child Rights Act (2003) and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (2015) to expand the scope of protection, strengthen their provisions, close implementation gaps, and ensure nationwide enforcement. We are also leveraging the Cybercrime Act, which is in full force, to protect children from cyberbullying, exploitation, and abuse.”

READ ALSO: JUST IN: Reps withdraw compulsory voting bill

He added: “I am pleased to note that 36 states have domesticated the Child Rights Act, thus reflecting our collective resolve to protect and provide for the welfare of children. However, laws alone will not be sufficient to protect our children. We require a holistic approach where parents, teachers, caregivers, faith leaders, lawmakers, and citizens must take ownership.

“We are investing in other focused national systems for child protection, such as the Child Protection Information Management System (CPIMS), which is being scaled up to track and respond to cases in real-time. The Ministry of Women’s Affairs is strengthening community-based child protection mechanisms, training frontline responders, and leading nationwide awareness campaigns to end harmful traditional practices.

“Additionally, and in alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda, we are committed to implementing proactive measures to strengthen existing efforts to support families and communities, including developing a robust institutional framework focused exclusively on Child Protection and Development. This will ensure greater accountability in safeguarding the rights and well-being of every Nigerian child.”

President Tinubu said his government had introduced a National Policy on Safety, Security, and Violence-Free Schools and developed Guidelines for School Administrators, among several other measures.

He said the government had embedded social-emotional learning and child safeguarding into teacher training.

“Through the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children, we create inclusive pathways for every child to learn, thrive, and succeed, regardless of background,” he stated.

The president stated further: “In the care economy, we are expanding access to primary healthcare and upscaling dedicated Mother and Child Hospitals and healthcare systems across all six geopolitical zones, offering integrated maternal and child services. We are working collaboratively with subnational governments to ensure the establishment of similar facilities across the States.

“We believe every child has the right to grow up in a loving and protective environment. To ensure that children who are unable to remain in their biological homes are given the care and protection they deserve, the Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs has developed the National Guidelines for Alternative Care for Children. These guidelines would complement the recently launched National Plan of Action on Ending Violence Against Children (EVAC) and strengthen our child protection systems.

“Through the Nutrition 774 programme and our School Feeding Scheme, we work assiduously to improve child health and cognitive development. The Nutrition 774 project aims to ensure no child in Nigeria goes hungry. Through this project, we are reaching every community, guaranteeing that children receive the necessary nutrition to thrive in their academic pursuits, creative endeavours, and overall health. A well-nourished child is well-equipped and ready to tackle the challenges of tomorrow.

“To institutionalise our commitment, the Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs has recently established a dedicated Department of Nutrition to strengthen policy coherence, programme delivery, and coordination around child and maternal nutrition.

“We are investing in social protection tools such as the Universal Child Grant and finalising a national Child Wellbeing Index to measure progress, track gaps, and hold ourselves accountable.”

By BOSEDE OLUSOLA-OBASA

It’s Children’s Day, 2025, and I wish all the children of the world a hearty Happy Children’s Day celebration! This week, I chose to dedicate my piece to commemorating the day. Please pardon me, I’m about to shake some tables, but I come in peace! Trust me, it’s for the general good; both now and for posterity. It’s unfortunate how a lack of self-awareness in many adults keeps them from answering certain life questions before life forces them to. The topic of my piece today is designed as a bait, to lead you into reflecting on other important questions you may have never considered, but which could shape or haunt your tomorrow. If you’ve found yourself paying attention to this article, then I celebrate you for being an intentional person.

My intention here is to lead you to ask and answer some heart-probing questions that can make a significant difference in the way you see, interpret, live, and respond to life. This is a personal character development exercise I developed about 10 years ago for what I call ‘Better-Me Living’.

Here is a caveat! To make the most of this exercise, one that will leave your family an invaluable legacy, you must be very sincere at every stage. That is the core rule. Please take this test seriously, as it would help you truly assess the quality of experience you have created in your relationships, especially with your children, and give you a chance to become better. No matter your age, now is the best time to do this. Jim Henson noted that “The attitude you have as a parent is what your kids will learn from more than what you tell them. They do not remember what you try to teach them. They remember what you are.”

When you are done taking the exercise, whether you were readily able to face the questions and their feedback or not; do not fail to follow up. Know this: it is important to intentionally make things right with the people you share your life with, especially your children. Many parents may be living in deception of what their children truly think of them. That is why it is important to have these ‘difficult’ conversations on an age-appropriate basis. I’ve categorised the questions to address both father and mother aspects of relationships with children. Now, let’s explore it!

QUESTIONS:

Would You Sincerely Ask These Questions And Embrace Honest Feedback Without Feeling Victimised?

HUSBAND:

Dare to ask your wife if she would sincerely wish that her (your) daughter marries a man like you when she’s old enough.

WIFE:

Dare to ask your husband if he would sincerely wish that his (your) son marries a woman like you when he is old enough.

FATHER:

Dare to ask your daughter if she would sincerely love to have a husband like you – her father.

MOTHER:

Dare to ask your son if he would sincerely love to have a wife like you – his mother.

PARENTS:

Dare to ask your child what he or she sincerely doesn’t like about your parenting style either as a mother or father.

PARENTS:

Dare to ask your children if they would love to become your version of a parent to their own children when they grow up.

PERSONAL:

If you were a member of the opposite sex and had to choose a spouse, sincerely, would you marry you?

HUSBAND:

Would you dare to ask your wife for a sincere assessment of how you are faring as her husband, what she doesn’t like about it and what she would desire to see changed?

WIFE:

Would you sincerely ask your husband for a truthful assessment of how you are faring as his wife, what he doesn’t like and what he would desire to see changed?

PERSONAL:

How would you want to be remembered by your children?

These are some self-actualisation questions, for which you should dare to get feedback from your nuclear family, especially your children. Doing so can create a whole new connection with them because it makes you appear vulnerable and more relatable. Some questions here were focused on you as spouses because the strongest way to preach a healthy relationship to your children is by how you practice it as parents. Remember that in personal character development (assessments and evaluation), feedback mechanisms are essential. It’s a fact that parents are truly the greatest role models of mental and emotional wellness for their children, and even if they cannot tell you what they truly feel about your lives, it doesn’t cancel the fact that they have clear assessments and memories of you. I therefore encourage you to keep this piece very close to your heart and work on it as it could mean a world of difference!

Here’s what to do with the feedback from this exercise: think deeply about it, take detailed notes on action points, and act gradually but sincerely on the areas requiring change to get the best results. Be intentional about what narratives you are writing in your child’s mind.

I remain committed to adding value to you, which is why I believe a children’s day celebration like this should serve as a strong reminder that you are being closely watched and decisions are being made on your account. Remember, it’s never too late to become better!

If you loved what you read, let me know. Also, feel free to reach out if you would like to book a corporate training session on: Teamwork Attitude Optimisation, Leadership Sustainability, Corporate Culture Creation, Exceptional Customer Service, or Personal Character Development Coaching. Enjoy the rest of your week!

President Bola Tinubu has celebrated Nigeria’s children, describing them as the bearers of the nation’s torch into the future, on the special occasion of Children’s Day.

The president rejoiced with parents, guardians, and families across the nation, and called for a reinforcement of the family unit as a place where the sacred values of honesty, modesty, hard work and charity were passed down to the shining lights of tomorrow.

President Tinubu affirmed that society was a reflection of each family unit as a collective, urging the preservation of those principles that “make us a wholesome, nurturing, and thriving nation.”

The president stated that his administration was sparing no effort in ensuring that Nigeria’s children had a solid footing for the realization of their dreams.

With increased investments in education, and the recent overhauling of the entire education system to provide both human and material resources for learning, as well as the efforts of the National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education to get the nation’s precious gifts off the streets, the president emphasized that his administration would continue to expand access to qualitative education for all Nigerians.

President Tinubu reassured the nation of his commitment to ensuring a safe and secure ambience of learning for the children while improving the standard of education.

Former Vice President of Nigeria and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2023 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated children across the globe and in Nigeria especially over the celebration of Children Day this year.

The former vice president said in a press release by his media office on Friday, that “the celebration of Children today is to give an opportunity for today’s leaders to build a brighter future for the society.”

Atiku remarked that while May 27 every year had been earmarked for the celebration of children, “our world is still troubled with existential threats mitigating the possibility of a promising future for our children.”

He said further, “In Nigeria, for instance, we continue to grapple with the problem of out of school children and children being forced into child labour or, even, crime.

“Sadly, not much has gone into establishing a system of protection for children against these dangerous tendencies.

“Either at the governmental or civil society levels, our failures to build the wall that will shield our children from negative influences that can affect their future remains inexcusable,” the former Vice President noted.

He therefore called on parents or guardians and all stakeholders in the project of ensuring a better future for the children to work in synergy and come up with specific policy frameworks that will guarantee a fairer future for the children.

The governor of the State of Osun, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, has said his administration is committed to ensuring that both the present and future of the children of the state are secured and guaranteed.

This, according to him, is the strategic inspiration behind his administration’s assiduous commitment to building an Osun that is peaceful, forward-looking and progressive.

“We realise that tomorrow is only worth waiting for if your rights are protected, and if we care to provide the right kind of society that enables you to live to your fullest potential.

“And for us, this is one commitment we take seriously, knowing its importance.

“Therefore, we continue to prioritise the development of our education system by sustaining the home-grown school-feeding programme, building of new school infrastructures and equipping them.

“We are also paying attention to the welfare of our teachers so that they can be motivated to teach better. The fact that in our 2021 budget, the chunk of 18 per cent was voted for education is a strong indication that we mean business.

“For us, no sacrifice is too great to pay in ensuring that we give you a childhood you can fondly remember while preparing you to function effectively for a proud tomorrow, in the service of our dear state and the world in general.

“I urge you to work hard in being the best you can be. The pathway to an outstanding life is spotted with many distractions and it your duty to avoid any that will hinder you from fulfilling your potential,” Oyetola stated.

In her welcome address, the Commissioner for Women, Children and Social Affairs, Bukola Olaboopo, urged parents to be conscious of the safety of their children at all times, adding that the increasing complexity of the society did not leave the children unattended to.

Olaboopo warned perpetrators of evil acts against children that: “Osun is a danger zone as anyone caught would be made to dance naked in full glare.”

Olaboopo lauded the Oyetola-led government of the State of Osun for its commitment to the welfare and development of children, adding that its commitment paid off in the previous year when Osun was named the most children-friendly state in the country.

“The state in 2020 broke record to become the most children-friendly state in Nigeria owing to the visit of the hierarchy of the state’s Ministry of Women and Children Affairs to the Nigerian Borstal Institution, a Federal Government Juvenile Correctional Centre, to check on children from Osun who ran in conflict with the law and were sentenced to the facility. This was the first of its kind since the establishment of the facility,” Olaboopo stated.

In what captures the 2020 theme of the Children’s Day celebration, AbdulRazaq said the administration’s commitment to gender inclusion and its huge investments in education gave the Kwara girl child a head start in life.

“Our administration stands in firm solidarity with the Kwara child and children all over the world as our country again commemorates the Children’s Day,” the governor said in a statement by his spokesman, Rafiu Ajakaye.

“Our policy is to ensure that no child is left behind or denied every right and privileges to compete with their peers.

“The theme for this year’s Children’s Day is ‘Promoting Girl Child Education for Sustainable Development.’ Apart from the general bias for children and all disadvantaged groups, this administration is committed to the well-being of the girl child. Today, we have given the girl child a bragging right to say that her state, Kwara, holds the ace on the African continent in terms of women inclusion in governance.

“We also had the girl child in mind when we enrolled Kwara State in the national school feeding programme because of its consequences for increased school enrolment, reduction of out-of-school children, poverty reduction, and women empowerment.

“Our investments in the primary education sector, including paying better attention to children with special education needs, are designed to secure a brighter future for the Kwara child. Even in this time of COVID-19 pandemic, the administration has ensured that the children continue to get attention through our radio and online classes.

“While wishing all our children a happy 2020 celebration, the administration assures them that nothing will be left undone to protect them from all forms of abuse, violence, and stigmatisation.”

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has promised that the National Assembly will work to guarantee a better future for Nigerian children.

Lawan made the promise on Wednesday on the occasion of this year’s Children’s Day.

His words: “I want to use the opportunity of this occasion to assure our children that the National Assembly is fully aware of the challenges that they face and will continue to work to guarantee them and our country a better future.

“I also call on the authorities at the sub-national level who have not done so, to domesticate the Child Rights Act for the sake of the future of our children.”

The Senate President called for collaboration between the federal and state governments in comprehensively addressing issues relating to the plight of Nigerian children.

On the part of parents, Lawan urged them to dutifully play their own role in providing the immediate needs for their children, for the future peace of the children, parents and the country.

The Senate President said the surest route to a happy and fulfilling future for the children was to provide them quality education and healthcare, and to protect them against all forms of abuse.

Lawan said it was that realisation that led the Federal Government in 1976 to introduce Universal Primary Education, which in 1999 was expanded to the Universal Basic Education, and also to enact the Child Rights Act in 2003.

He, however, expressed concern that despite all such efforts, Nigeria was still heavily burdened with a high number of out-of-school children, a situation which he said showed the sign of a grave danger for the country.

The Ogun Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Mr. Clement Oladele, said on Monday that 11 children had so far died in different road crashes in the state in 2019.

Oladele made the disclosure during the 2019 Children’s Day celebration and Road Safety Club session held at the FRSC headquarters in Abeokuta.

The sector commander noted that of the 11 children, a boy and five girls, died in a road crash at Olorunsogo in Abeokuta on January 25.

He added that the FRSC had over the past 31 years of its existence placed special premium on the protection of children from traffic-related dangers.

‘‘We have devoted special attention to the propagation of Road Safety Clubs in Primary and Junior Secondary Schools where road safety ideals are being taught.

‘‘We have a total of 774 Road Safety Clubs in Primary and Secondary Schools across Ogun State.

‘‘We have also included child safety education in our public enlightenment programmes in churches, mosques and motor parks across Ogun State.

‘‘All of these efforts are to ensure that we make a difference in the everyday life of our children.

‘‘Ogun State has a peculiar traffic situation; we have a very high number of trucks plying highways in the state.

‘‘One of my saddest moments as Sector Commander was the day we lost one of our children in a road traffic crash.

‘‘She was an undergraduate of the Tai Solarin University of Education who had just concluded her internship with us here in FRSC.

‘‘The memory of the young lady still brings me pain,’’ he said.

He urged children not to use an ear piece when walking on the road or while on a bike and in a taxi.

‘‘You should always remind daddy and mummy of traffic rules and regulations and politely warn them against the various dangerous habits on the road,’’ he said.

Ajayi Oluwapelumi, a student of Mercyland College, Abeokuta, commended the FRSC for organising the programme.

She said the road safety club in schools had assisted the children to know more on how to conduct themselves on the roads.

Also speaking, Sanyaolu Oluwanifemi from Alaba Lawson Royal College, Abeokuta, also thanked the FRSC for the programme and called on motorists to always obey traffic rules and regulations.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the last general election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has called on Nigerian children to be hopeful that the situation in the country would get better.

The former vice president spoke on the occasion of this year’s Children’s Day.

He said with such a spirit, they would join in the efforts to make Nigeria better.

His message is contained in a statement issued by his media aide, Mr. Paul Ibe.

His words: “No matter how tough and trying the situation in the country may appear today, Nigerian children must believe that things can and will get better.

“This conviction will help them see in themselves the solutions to the multiple challenges our country faces.

“It will strengthen them to not turn their backs on their country at a time when she needs them most, no matter how rosy life may appear in other shores.

“From chess champions to acclaimed artists, Nigerian children have been in the international headlines recently for exceptional achievements despite all odds.
