After losing the first game 1-0 to defending champion Senegal, there was hope that the team would bounce back against Sudan especially after Senegal failed to win their game against Congo, with the game ending 1-1, but it was a reverse situation, with Nigeria losing 4-0.

Anthony Ijoma thought he had already put the Super Eagles ahead in the 21st minute of the game as the team celebrated the goal with wild jubilation before it was cancelled for offside after the referee consulted VAR.

Just two minutes later, Sudan was celebrating the opening goal as Remo Stars’ defender, Leonard Ngengen, put the ball beyond his goalkeeper for an own goal.

Moments later, it became worse for the former Ikorodu City player as he handled the ball in the box to give Sudan a penalty that was converted in the 44th minute to give the opponent a 2-0 lead going into the halftime break.

While seeking for the equaliser, the team were exposed the more as Sudan added two more goals in the 56th and 62nd minute of the game as they surged up to the top of the table with four points, same as Senegal, albeit with better goal difference.

Speaking about the performance of the team, former NFF board member, Barr. Chris Green said that was the worst Nigeria team at a major competition.

“We have never been this poor,” he said.

“Eschew sentiments and favouritism. Don’t patronise agents. Get competent hands.”

With the elimination of the team, all eyes will now be on the remaining FIFA World Cup qualifiers for the Eagles main team and the Africa Cup of Nations later this year.

A total of 28 players are now at the Super Eagles’ camp in Ikenne, Ogun State, as the team continue to intensify preparations for the tournament.

Head Coach Eric Chelle had on July 4, released a 35-man provisional list for the Super Eagles B squad ahead of the championship.

The CHAN tournament which is exclusive to players competing in their domestic leagues, will be hosted in August by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Promise Efoghe, the Super Eagles Media Officer said that the players were focused on giving their best and making the final team list, with a mix of excitement and pressure as they prepare for the tournament

A cross section of players who spoke after the team’s training session on Wednesday evening were quoted as saying that the trainings had been intense as the expectations in camp were very high.

Nduka Junior of Remo Stars said the training sessions had been very good, adding that the pressure in camp was high.

“The trainings so far have been a good test for the players in camp.

“The boys are ready and prepared for the task ahead.

“Everyone is definitely under pressure, but the coach wants the best out of all the players in camp,” he said.

Aniekeme Okon of Rivers United said the players in camp were in high spirit and eager to show their abilities as well as technical and tactical prowess.

“I see this as an opportunity, and from the experience and what I have seen so far, it’s been very good.

“It’s a bit of pressure on us with 28 players in camp in high spirit and high expectations as everyone is trying to give his best to make the final list.

“For now, we will keep pushing,” he said.

Leonard Ngenge of Ikorodu City expressed gratitude to God and the coach for the opportunity to show what he can offer to the team.

“The coach has said that for me, obviously being here is because I deserve it.

“On a personal note, it’s an amazing step, and I am grateful to God for the opportunity.

“Obviously, we are all under pressure, but I remain confident and doing the best I can to put myself in the coach’s radar and make the final list,” he said.

Nigeria, CHAN runners-up in 2018, are placed in Group D of the 19-nation competition.

They are grouped alongside title holders Senegal, as well as Sudan and Congo.

The Super Eagles will face Senegal and Sudan at Amman Stadium, located on Zanzibar Island.

Their final group game, against Congo, will be played at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, Dar es Salaam.

Togo won the first leg 4-1 in Lome last month and were confident of picking their first ever ticket to the finals of the competition reserved for professionals playing in their home leagues on the continent.

Yet, they had to dig very deep into their defensive arsenal and resort to time-wasting tactics to edge out a determined Nigeria.

It was fierce and furious from the first blast of Nigerien referee Abdoulaye Rhissa Al-Mustapha’s whistle, with the Eagles aware before kick off that they needed to score a minimum of three goals without a reply to consign the visitors to elimination. Nigeria’s attacking force of Ndifreke Effiong, Sunusi Ibrahim, Sunkanmi Olawoyin and Sikiru Alimi asked question after question of the Togolese defence.

In the 8th minute, Alimi, who scored the Eagles B’s only goal in the first leg, scooped the ball from another attack and left his marker for dead before firing past goalkeeper Abdoul-Moubarak Aigba for the first goal of the day.

The goal further spurred the Eagles, and in the 19th minute Aigba was well placed to save as Sunusi Ibrahim released a fierce shot.

Another shot by Ibrahim nearly slipped into the net in the 25th minute, but Messan Toudji cleared off the line with Aigba beaten.

Four minutes later, another shot by Ibrahim screamed away from goal.

In the 31st minute, Ibrahim side-netted after dragging past his marker, and just before half time, Effiong lifted the ball a little too high from a 20-yard free kick.

In the second half, Togo defended even more stoutly, showing little concern for onslaughts on the Nigerian goal.

In the 59th minute, Aigba again saved as Alimi nodded towards goal.

Alimi got his and Nigeria’s second of the day in the 71st minute – a scorcher from the edge of the box off a pass from Ndifreke Effiong.

Nigeria continued to throw everything into the game, looking for the third goal that would send them to Cameroon at the expense of Togo.

But it never came, despite the boys giving it a good fight in order to qualify.

Instead, Togo’s Sparrow Hawks will make their first ever appearance at the CHAN finals next year summer.

The CHAN 2020 second leg qualifying match is a game Nigeria must win by at least 3-0 to scale through to the finals billed for Cameroon next year summer, and the former goalkeeper says what the team needs to achieve the ultimate goal is total backing from Nigerians.

“We have done what we need to do for the work at hand. We have learnt a lot going into this encounter and we are very optimistic everything will turn out well.

“What we cannot provide for ourselves is support. And that is why we are asking for full support and understanding all through the game. The players need every show of love for optimal output on the pitch.”

The Eagles had their last intensive training at the venue of the match on Friday morning as the rains showered across Lagos.

The session lasted from 8 a.m. through 10 a.m.

Nigeria lost by 1-4 to the Sparrow Hawks of Togo in the first game played last month in Lome despite scoring first and taking good control of the match for a major part of the 90 minutes.

Since the first game, eight new players who were not in Lome have joined the team and this has given the team better colouring and a lot more positive charge.

The aggregate winner of the two-legged fixture will qualify for the African Nations Championship to be hosted by Cameroon next year.

Nigeria is hoping to qualify and finish better than their silver medal outing in Morocco last year while the Togolese are looking for a first berth at the continental competition designed solely for professionals featuring in their domestic leagues.
