By AYO AROWOJOLU

Today is the 76th birthday of one of Nigeria’s foremost distinguished scholars whose life is a reflection of integrity, morality, humility and service, Prof Olufemi Onabajo.

A Professor of professors fondly called Baba by his several mentees, his leadership trajectory includes serving years ago as Vice-Chancellor of Lead City University, Ibadan where he provided steady academic and administrative direction during a formative period in the Institution’s growth.

Baba, being an all-rounder, an authority, with proven practical experience in the media, print journalism, broadcast media, and the world of public relations and advertising, and not forgetting his academic sojourn which started as lecturer at the University of Lagos, Akoka, has been everywhere and in very high demand across many universities in Nigeria.

To mention just a few, Prof Onabajo has held strategic academic positions, contributing to academic scholarship, curriculum development, accreditation processes, and institutional strengthening at Caleb University, Imota and presently at Chrisland University, Abeokuta where he is Head of Department of Mass Communication.

He is a well-established Nigerian scholar in mass communication, with leadership experience in higher education and a strong background in media practice and research.

At 76, Prof. Olufemi Onabajo stands as a symbol of dedication to knowledge, faith, and national development. His journey reflects a rare blend of practice and theory, leadership and scholarship, intellect and character.

In an era when institutions seek role models of consistency and credibility, his life offers a template: build competence, serve faithfully, mentor generously, and lead with integrity.

At 76, Prof. Olufemi Onabajo stands as a symbol of dedication to knowledge, faith, and national development.

His area of specialty is in Mass Communication and Media Technology. In his work career spanning almost five decades, Baba has worked in major Nigerian media organisations, including the Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation in the early 1980’s and the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), where he rose to become Controller of News and Current Affairs before moving into academia.

He also worked in media and corporate communication roles particularly at Eleganza Nigeria Limited. Starting his academic sojourn, Prof. Onabajo worked as a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer before becoming a Professor of Mass Communication.

He has authored many scholarly works, with several dozens of academic publications and books cutting across broadcasting, public relations, advertising, media law, research and communication theory. He has contributed to significantly strengthening Mass Communication as a discipline in Nigeria.

Prof. Onabajo is a member of professional bodies like the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations and the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria.

He is also active in his Ijebu community as a Venerable in the Anglican Communion.

Today at Chrisland University, a small cake-cutting event holds, organized by colleagues, mentees and students, to celebrate not just his age, but the depth of his impact, praying that his legacies continue to illuminate generations yet unborn.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has delisted four Computer-Based Testing, CBT, Centres and arrested 27 impersonators during the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME.

This was made known on Friday in a statement issued in Abuja by the board’s spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin.

He explained that the CBT centres were delisted for failing to meet the stringent technical standards required for the ongoing UTME.

Benjamin said the delisted centres included Adventure Associate, located behind Sheshe Supermarket off Hadejia Road, Kano, Kano State, and Saadatu Rimi College of Education, Zaria Road, Naibawa, Kano, Kano State.

Also delisted are Penta M & F Technical Services Ltd., Centre 2, 96km Sokoto-Jega Road, Tambuwal, and Penta M & F Technical Services Ltd., Centre 1, 96km Sokoto-Jega Road, Tambuwal.

“While JAMB commends the 883 centres that have demonstrated exceptional performance, it unequivocally warns that any centre failing to meet ethical or technical standards, regardless of ownership, will be blacklisted,” he stated.

Benjamin urged candidates who were previously scheduled to take their exams at the delisted centres to urgently reprint their examination notification slips to access their new centres and rescheduled dates.

“We regret any inconvenience this may cause, but we will not tolerate excuses from candidates who fail to reprint their slips.

“As of Friday, April 25, 2025, more than 900,000 candidates had successfully completed the UTME, out of the 2,083,600 registered for the 2025 examinatio,” he added.

In a related development, Benjamin reported the arrest of 27 impersonators, who were handed over to the Nigeria Police for immediate prosecution.

Addressing the Caleb University incident, he confirmed that the board had been alerted to the unauthorised restrictions placed on candidates wearing hijabs.

He assured that swift action had been taken, with the Vice-Chancellor of the university condemning the actions of an overzealous security officer.

“We extend our sincere apologies to the affected candidates and commend the leadership of both the centre and the university for their prompt intervention, which ensured that no candidate suffered undue disadvantage,” he added.

Parents of students of Caleb University, Imota, Lagos State, have declared that there is no crisis between them and the school authorities over school fees.

The declaration was made by the vice chairman of the parents’ forum, Mr. Oritseweyinmi Boyo, in a press statement he issued.

This is as he also praised the school authorities for ensuring that the academic calendar was not disrupted despite COVID-19, following the e-learning initiative introduced.

Speaking on the relationship between the parents and the school authorities, Boyo said at no time was there an unresolved issue that could lead to any crisis between them.

He explained that the school fees issue misconstrued to be a crisis bordered on students who had paid their accommodation fees in anticipation of resumption, but were advised by the school management to either carry such fees forward or get a refund.

Boyo noted that he had personally called on any parent who had paid his or her child’s accommodation fee, to come up with the receipts of such payment for a refund.

The parents’ forum vice-chairman also expressed the appreciation of the parents to the university management for coming up with apps which would bridge the communication gap between the parents and the school.

He said with the two apps – Caleb Watch and Caleb Connect – the stage had been set for even better communication between the university and its stakeholders.

He explained that it was the cordial relationship existing between the parents and the university management that made it possible for the parents to commence the construction of a well-equipped multi-million naira medical centre in the school, which is expected to be commissioned in the last quarter of the year.
