The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has shifted the date to effect new fare at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, NAIA, from July 17 to August 1.

In a statement signed by the FAAN management on Sunday in Abuja, the postponement was to make the airport users to enjoy more of the current charges.

According to the management, the fare for cars will change from N200 to N300, while that of buses and Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) will change from N300 to N500 only.

It said the truck (six tyres) tariff would change from N500 to N1,000 while the trailer and container tariff would be N2,000.

The management urged the public to take notice of the changes in the effective date and tariff.

It also appealed to all airport users that owned vehicles to use the dedicated “park and pay” for car parks that had been provided for the comfort of airport users.

According to it, drop-off zones rules and regulations guiding movement should be respected to create free traffic flow to enhance a calm and serene environment around the airport.

READ ALSO: FAAN asks illegal occupants to relocate from airport lands

“Commercial drivers are to use the drop-off zone to drop their passengers but not to engage in pick-up of passengers as the airport already has registered car hire services (FAAN Taxi, Bolt, Uber) situated along the airport exit way.

“There is an exclusive parking lot for heads of MDAs, MDs of private companies, and highly recognised individuals for their comfort as frequent fliers and their status in society.

“VIP parking stickers are also available for those who want to enjoy VIP parking privileges,” it said.

The management commended the conduct of the airport users, urging them to always verify their “parking status and pay” where necessary before attempting to leave the airport.

According to the management, verifying parking status by airport users will help to avoid any embarrassment by allowing free flow of traffic in and out of the airport.

It reassured the passengers, concessioners and stakeholders of the airport’s commitment to their safety, security and comfort while using or passing through the airport.

According to it, FAAN is committed to her core values of safety, security and comfort.

The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Vehicle Inspection Office, VIO, says it will introduce a new hybrid licences for all app-based vehicle operators in the territory from February 2022.

FCT VIO Director, Mr Wadata Bodinga, disclosed this during an FCT Transport Stakeholders Meeting on Tuesday in Abuja.

He directed that all electronic-hailing operators must convert their regular vehicle licences to hybrid licences.

Some of the e-hailing companies under this category are: Uber, Bolt, Rida amongst others.

Bodinga disclosed that enforcement of the new directive would start from Feb.1, 2022 as the directorate would commence a free conversion of all operators from Nov.9 to Jan.31, 2022.

He said that because e-hailing vehicles were not conventional taxis, the VIO initiated the hybrid vehicle licensing to have the information of e-hailing drivers.

“We as an agency of government want to have an idea of the people operating these vehicles and not just us having the details of users.

“The licensing will give us the database to know those registered and those operating legally,” he said.

He said that a Driver Certificate Card, DCC, would also be obtained by all drivers after undergoing a one-day mandatory training at FCT Model Driver’s Institute or Lugbe VIO Office, Abuja.

“Voluntary enrolment for the DCC will commence from November 9 to January 31, 2022.

“DCC requirements for the conversion are National Identification Number (NIN) and a valid driver’s licence.

“This will help us know the number of operators to promote efficiency,” he stated.

Bodinga, however, said that drivers who failed to convert their vehicle licences to the hybrid type before February next year would have to pay for the conversion.

“It will be an annual payment that will not be exorbitant but there has to be a payment before they could be logged into the portal,” he said.

He further disclosed that to avoid permanent ban from operations in the FCT, all taxi drivers or anyone who wished to offer transportation services for hire or gain must obtain the FCT DCC.

“No taxi or bus will be allowed to operate in the FCT except those who fulfill the following: Must have an authorised Side Number;

“Must be registered with a licensed operator, appropriate Zonal Cab Colour, fulfills minimum roadworthiness requirements,” Bodinga said.

He also stated that all motorcycle and tricycle riders must obtain the FCT Rider’s Certification Card.

“No motorcycle and tricycle will be allowed to operate in the territory except those who possess an Abuja registered number plate and authorised side number.

“All riders must have a safety boot, reflective jacket, safety helmet, protective clothing and RCC,” he stated.

He said that the directorate would also stop the operation of all delivery motorcycle riders without registered Mail/Delivery service number plates.

He said, “The mail service number plate is new and different to help differentiate legal operators from the illegal ones.

“Delivery riders must have a valid RCC, delivery box rightly fixed, safety helmet and boot alongside a duly registered Cooperate Affairs Commission and Nigerian Postal Service documents,” he said.

The director further said that the development was as a result of schemes under the newly unveiled FCT Public Transport Management Scheme, PTMS.

“The scheme is to provide an improved frame work, passenger service vehicle operators licensing, tricycle and motorcycle last mile operators licensing, goods service vehicle operators licensing.

“The PTMS is a system that wants to bring all the commercial drivers and vehicles together as one of three things: security, sanity, efficiency and affordability.

“We are harnessing digital solutions, regular user transportation environment which can only be achieved if we can bridge the gap in our administration by its review,” he said.

Some Uber and Bolt e-cab drivers in Lagos on Saturday asked the e-hailing companies to immediately increase fares being charged by the operators, failing which they would go off the roads on Monday.

The e-cab operators, under the aegis of Professional E-hailing Drivers and Private Owners Association, PEDPA, threatened to embark on the strike if their demands were not met.

Mr Idris Shonuga, National President of PEDPA, at a news conference in Lagos, called for immediate upward review of e-cab fares to reflect the current economic reality in the country.

According to Shonuga, over 95 per cent of e-hailing transactions were consummated through Uber and Bolt platforms.

He said that the companies had refused to review its pricing despite unprecedented increases in the price of fuel, vehicles spare parts, food items and other essential commodities in the country.

“In a quest to work and harmoniously at resolving some issues, the association wrote several letters to the companies which were not attended to, showing nonchalant attitude towards our plight.

“Your companies have failed, refused and neglected to honour our request for a meeting to discuss issues beneficial to all e-hailing drivers in Nigeria, and to fashion a harmonious relationship that will benefit, dignify and improve the standard of living of e-hailing drivers, private car owners and the general standard of e-hailing business in the country.

“Instead of fixing a new and reasonable fare in line with inflation, the companies have recklessly continued to maintain the low fare, thereby, impoverishing hard working young Nigerians who are diligently and lawfully trying to make a decent living,” Shonuga said.

The e-cab operators also demanded adequate welfare package for drivers and compensation to the families of those that lost their lives or are permanently disabled in the line of duty.

The association said that more than 15 drivers had lost their lives, while some had been permanently disabled in accidents in the course of the service.

More than 20 others have also lost their lives through kidnapping or killed by ritualists without any compensation from the operators, the association said.

Shonuga said that the association was considering taking legal action to seek remedies against the e-hailing companies if their demands were not met.
