In a statement issued in Kaduna on Saturday, Hayab recalled that in the early hour of July 5, 2021, bandits invaded the school located at Maraban Damishi, Chikun local government area of Kaduna State and kidnapped 121 students.

He said the number of the released students of Bethel Baptist High School included one student who was freed on December 28, 2021 and another one who was freed on January 1.

“With the release of these two students, a total of 120 students have regained their freedom so far and only one student is still with the bandits,” he said.

The chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Kaduna State, Rev. John Hayab, confirmed the release of the students to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Sunday, in Kaduna, adding that the students were freed on Sunday afternoon.

“Yes, 10 more students of Baptist High School were released this afternoon. We have 11 now with the bandits, we thank all Nigerians for their prayers and support. Trusting God that the rest will be released very soon,” Hayab said .

Rev. John Hayab, the state chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, made this known when he spoke with newsmen in Kaduna on Sunday.

“Fifteen more students were released on Saturday night and 65 students are still with the bandits, ” he said.

Bandits in the early hours of July 5, invaded the school and kidnapped an unspecified number of students.

ASP Mohammed Jalige, spokesperson for the police command in the state also confirmed the release of the students.

Jalige, however, said that the police was not in the picture of whether ransom was paid by the parents before the students release or not.

“We are not aware of that,” he said.

“Yes, another four students escaped from their abductors on Sunday, July 25, and have been reunited with their parents,” Hayab said.

He said that in spite of the latest development, 83 students are still in captivity.

Hayab said the 28 students regained their freedom on Saturday night, while 81 others were still in captivity.

The bandits invaded the school at about 2:00 a.m.

The Public Relations Officer of the Police Command in Kaduna, ASP Mohammed Jalije, who confirmed the incident, said 17 of the students had been rescued.

He said that the exact number of  students abducted by the bandits was yet to be ascertained, adding that details would be made public in due course.

Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Kaduna State Chapter, Rev. John Hayab, said as at Friday, there were 180 boarding students in the stchool.

Hayab, who is also a member of the Baptist Church, said that so far, 26  students had returned, and was hopeful that more  would escape from the bandits.
