An Abuja High Court on Thursday discharged a former Minister of Aviation Stella Oduah and her ex-aide, Gloria Odita, of N2.5 billion fraud charge.

Justice Hamza Muazu ordered their discharge after the prosecution told the court that it had discontinued the case against them based on their plea bargain.

The prosecution, however, filed an amended charge against two firms linked to the ex-minister as defendants.

The firms are Sobora International Limited and Global Offshore and Marine Limited.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, informed the court that the plea bargain had been reached by parties.

When the case was earlier called in the morning, Oyedepo told the court that based on the plea bargain talks between parties, the prosecution filed an amended charge.

When the issue of who would represent the firms arose, parties sought time to address it, following which the judge stood down proceedings till later in the day.

In the amended two-count charge, Sobora International was accused of being unlawfully in possession of N838m, while Global Offshore was alleged to have unlawfully possessed N1.629 billion.

Following the guilty plea entered for the two companies, prosecuting lawyer, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, urged the court to convict them and issue an order winding them up.

Oyedepo also urged the court to order that the N1.2 billion, paid as restitution by the companies, as contained in a bank draft submitted to the court.

In addition, the N780 million recovered by investigators in the course of investigation, be forefeited to the federal government.

Counsel to the defendants, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN, Wale Balogun, SAN, did not object to Oyedepo’s requests, which the judge granted in his ruling.

Justice Muazu convicted the companies based on their guilty plea.

He issued an order winging them up and further ordered that the N1.2 billion paid as restitution and the N780m recovered during investigation are forfeited to the FG.

The judge equally issued an order striking out the earlier charge, dated October 13, 2025, which contained the names of the ex-minister and Odita and proceeded to discharge them.

Oduah was arraigned in December 2025 alongside Odita, by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation on a-five-count charge bordering on alleged fraud, obtaining by false pretence, and criminal breach of trust.

The prosecution alleged that the defendants conspired in January 2014 to obtain N2.4 billion from the Federal Ministry of Aviation through Broad Waters Resources Nigeria Ltd and Global Offshore Marine Ltd. under alleged fraudulent claims.

The offence, the prosecution said, contravened the provisions of Sections 8(a) and 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud Act and is punishable under Section 1(3).

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

World number three-ranked team, France secured a 93–86 victory over reigning African champions, Nigeria, in a Group A clash at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 Qualifying Tournament in Villeurbanne.

The hosts led from start to finish at the Astroballe arena on Sunday, establishing early control and maintaining their advantage throughout the competitive encounter.

Nigeria currently ranked eighth in the world, mounted a strong third-quarter push to cut the deficit, but France responded with a composed final period to preserve their lead and close out the game.

France maintained control during the decisive moments, preventing any lead change and ensuring Nigeria never went ahead throughout the contest.

Janelle Salaun led France with 19 points and five rebounds, shooting six-of-nine from the field and four-of-seven from three-point range in nearly 30 minutes.

Valeriane Ayayi added 12 points and six rebounds, finishing with a team-best plus-12 rating and making key contributions at both ends of the floor.

Elizabeth Balogun paced Nigeria with 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists in almost 35 minutes, providing momentum during the team’s strongest rally.

France produced a decisive 9–0 run late in the second quarter, extending the lead from 45–35 to 54–35 to gain firm control of the game.

Nigeria replied with a 12–0 run spanning late second and early third quarters, trimming the deficit from 57–38 to 57–50 with Balogun contributing five points.

France built the game’s largest lead of 19 points twice in the second quarter, first at 54–35 and again at 57–38.

Nigeria never led in the contest and ultimately fell by seven points as France closed strongly.

France led for 39 minutes and 42 seconds of the game, underscoring their dominance from the opening tip-off.

Nigeria never held the lead, while the contest was tied for only 18 seconds.

In the final 55 seconds, France outscored Nigeria 4–0 to seal the victory and maintain control.

France converted two baskets, secured rebounds and committed no turnovers, while Nigeria missed their lone field goal and two free throws.

Staff members of the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, have petitioned Oyo State Real Property Protection Agency over the invasion of their landed properties in Ibadan.

The NAN employees, in the petition written by their solicitor, Ademola Sodamade, and dated December 11, 2025, alleged breach of peace, threat to life and malicious damage by some land speculators.

The petition listed Mr Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Mrs Oluwamayowa Ayinde and Mr Adewale Owoade among the owners of the land.

They said that some land speculators, allegedly led by one Mr Kazim, popularly known as Abija, had invaded the properties without any authorisation, removing all the beacons and signposts on the land.

The employees explained that they purchased 35 acres of land at Butubutu Village in Ona-Ara local government area of Oyo State between 2013 and 2014.

“After the perfection of the purchase, my clients partitioned the land and sold it to different individuals, majority of whom are staff of the News Agency of Nigeria, Ibadan branch.

“Surprisingly, however, about a few months ago, Mr Kazim, popularly known as Abija, the Mogaji of Ile Aje, in Ode-Aje, Ibadan, forcefully entered the land.

“He removed and carted away some of the signposts and destroyed some of the pillars on the land with a view to selling it to certain individuals.

“He threatened to kill anybody who dared to stop him from carrying out his plans on the sale of the land,” the petition read.

Consequently, the NAN employees appealed to the agency to come to their aid by stopping the illegal activities of the land speculators on the properties.

Copies of the petition, including agreement of purchases, land surveys, photographs of the land and other relevant documents, were also submitted to the Olubadan Committee on Land Grabbing, Office of the Deputy Governor as well as the Chief Press Secretary to Oyo State Governor, among others.

Speaking on the development, the chairman of NAN Housing Scheme in Ibadan Zonal Office, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, said that the concept was borne out of a cooperative arrangement among the staff members of the agency to own property through monthly contributions since 2013.

“It is very sad and disturbing that some hoodlums, under the guise of working for the state government, can forcefully encroach on the land, destroy all the farm produce, remove all the beacons and signposts installed there and threaten to kill and maim any of us on the site,” Balogun said.

“On May 1, 2026, EFUNROYE storms cinemas nationwide.”

The sensational actress and filmmaker added that she was dedicating ‘Efunroye’, her cinematic debut to her late mother who recently passed on.

“My mother is gone… and I haven’t even laid her to rest yet. Every day since her passing has felt heavy. The calls. The condolences. The quiet moments when it finally sinks in.

“Grief does not wait for you to be ready; it just sits on your chest. I could have stayed away. I could have mourned in silence.

“But I chose to rise, for my mother, for my legacy, for this story.

“When you see me promoting this film, understand, it is not noise. It is resilience. It is a daughter pushing through heartbreak to fulfil a promise to herself… and to her mother.”

‘Efunroye – The Unicorn’, set in pre-colonial and early colonial Yoruba lands, portrays the life and influence of Efunroye Tinubu, a prominent Yoruba merchant and powerbroker who played a major role in Lagos politics and commerce.

The movie, which tells the core story of Efunroye’s journey from market seller to influential kingmaker, celebrates the history of the Yoruba people and the legacy and recognition of women in leadership.

The plot follows the rise of a young girl born near Abeokuta who learns the trade of her mother and grandmother, grows into a resourceful, formidable Yoruba merchant, and builds power through trade, politics, and alliances.

The lead character of Efunroye Tinubu is portrayed by Faithia Williams, alongside other cast members, including Mercy Aigbe, Odunlade Adekola and Ibrahim Yekini.

Other cast members include Saidi Balogun, Taiwo Hassan, Ibrahim Chatta, Layi Wasabi, Eniola Ajao, Femi Branch, and Femi Adebayo, among others.

Erstwhile Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and former Minister for Mines and Steel Development, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola, on Wednesday, led a delegation on condolence visit to the Onabanjo family on the recent death of Chief Mrs. Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo, former First Lady of Ogun State.

The delegation comprised political stakeholders and associates, including a former chairman of Ijebu Ode local government, Alhaji Tajudeen Onabanjo; a former secretary of the same local government, Adewale Balogun, as well as party elders, leaders, youths and women.

The delegation was warmly received by the daughter of the deceased, Barrister Olivia Bukola Onabanjo, Chairman of the Ogun State Local Government Service Commission.

The condolence visit coincided with the presence of the Vice Chairman of Ijebu Ode Local Government, Hon. Titilayo Adeyemi, who had also come to commiserate with the family.

Adeyemi offered prayers for Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola, invoking divine blessings, guidance, and intervention upon his future political endeavours.

He also prayed fervently for the repose of the soul of Chief Mrs. Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo and for strength, comfort, and unity for the entire Onabanjo family.

After signing the condolence register, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola expressed his heartfelt sympathies, describing the late Chief Mrs. Onabanjo as one of the foremost First Ladies Ogun State has ever produced.

He noted that her rare distinction lay not merely in her status, but in her lifelong decision to live among the people, sharing their hopes, struggles, and aspirations even long after her husband’s exit from office.

According to him, death might take the body, but it could not erase the memory of kindness, humility, and service.

Ambassador Isola charged women across Ogun State and Nigeria at large to emulate the virtues embodied by Chief Mrs. Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo, stressing that true influence was rooted in character, compassion, and consistency rather than position or privilege.

In further reflection, he eulogized the towering legacy of her husband, Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, recalling his political journey from Chairman of Ijebu Ode Local Government to a legislator representing Ijebu Ode Constituency in the old Western Region, and eventually Governor of Ogun State.

Ambassador Isola highlighted how Chief Onabanjo’s governance philosophy was deeply inspired by the progressive ideals of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, particularly in the areas of free education, accessible healthcare, and integrated rural development, policies that continue to shape societal consciousness decades later.

Concluding his remarks, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola offered solemn prayers for the souls of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, and his beloved wife, Chief Mrs. Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo.

He also prayed earnestly for Barrister Olivia Bukola Onabanjo and the entire Onabanjo family, asking God to grant them strength, wisdom, and enduring peace.

Responding on behalf of the family, Barrister Olivia Bukola Onabanjo expressed profound appreciation to Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola and his high-profile delegation for their visit, describing it as a source of comfort and encouragement during a moment of profound loss.

She thanked them for commiserating and, in spirit, rejoicing with the family over a life that left indelible footprints on the sands of Ogun State’s history.

She concluded with prayers that the Lord, in His infinite mercy, would grant every request and heart’s desire of Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola, rewarding his compassion, leadership, and continued service to humanity.

Oba Ladoja

The emergence of Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland on Friday, September 26, at the ancient Mapo Hall in the heart of Ibadan, is uncannily symbolic in many respects. The symbolism lies not just in the rare recurrence of the number 44 in his life’s journey—as seen in his year of birth and his position in the lineage of Olubadans—but also in several other significant ways, which I will explore in this piece.

Ladoja was born on September 25, 1944. He emerged as the 44th Olubadan in September 2025. This is more than mere coincidence; it feels like the affirmation of a future foretold. And, like a man destined and prepared for the high position he now occupies, Ladoja was inaugurated in a blaze of elegance and glory.

He rode to Mapo Hill, the site of the historic Mapo Hall, in a gleaming white Rolls-Royce, resplendent in white traditional Aso Oke, with his wives in tow.

Mapo Hill was a sight to behold that day. The people of Ibadan trooped out en masse, swarming the venue, while many others lined the streets leading to Mapo in a bid to catch a glimpse of the spectacle.

Oba Ladoja is, indeed, an uncommon Olubadan. To label him another “Koseleri” in the Ibadan landscape would be most fitting. He is in the mould of the late Senator Abiola Ajimobi, who made history as the first governor of Oyo State to break the second-term jinx. However, this is not about political office or term limits—traditional rulers hold their positions for life. It is about the rare peculiarities of Ladoja’s kingship.

The new Olubadan has a solid pedigree and a rich academic and professional background. A true son of the soil, Ladoja hails from Gambari Village in Ibadan. He graduated with a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Liège in Belgium and spent 13 years working at Mobil before venturing into private practice. Oba Ladoja is in a class of his own. That said, there have been other well-lettered monarchs in Ibadan’s history, such as the 42nd Olubadan, Senator Lekan Balogun, who held a doctorate.

Oba Ladoja is among the few in this country who have headed a government before ascending the throne. His story is similar to that of Alfred Diete-Spiff, who was the first military governor of Rivers State—created from the old Eastern Region—before becoming the Amayanabo of Twon-Brass in Bayelsa State. Ladoja was elected governor of Oyo State in 2003. Earlier, in 1992, he served as a senator representing the Oyo Central District.

As governor, he ran a people-oriented administration that prioritised education, agriculture, housing, and water projects. However, he faced serious challenges from his political godfather, the late Alhaji Lamidi Adedibu, over control of state resources. The conflict led to Ladoja’s sensational impeachment in January 2006, which was later declared null and void by the court. He successfully challenged his removal in court, returning to office in December 2006 to complete his tenure. His determination to overturn the illegality reveals another facet of the new monarch: his faith in constitutional processes and his confidence in the courts as a means of redress.

Last week, at his residence in Bodija, Ibadan, Oba Ladoja recounted the story of his illegal impeachment to this writer and a few friends who visited to pay homage. He spoke of how those who orchestrated his removal as governor did so without the constitutionally required number in the state assembly. He also recalled the invaluable support of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu during those challenging times and how he ultimately regained his mandate.

“(President) Tinubu arranged for me to move quickly to Lagos after the incident. He put me in a place that was comfortable, safe, and hidden. Even before I arrived, he had assembled a team of legal luminaries to handle my case against the removal. It was such a solid team. We eventually won in court, and I regained my office.”

Given their close relationship and the significance of the Olubadan throne in Yorubaland, it was no surprise that President Tinubu graced Ladoja’s inauguration. The President’s presence not only added glamour to the event, but his speech also resonated deeply with the people of Ibadan. Tinubu spoke of his connection with Oba Ladoja, their time together in the Senate, and the impeachment saga. He recounted his campaign visit to Ibadan, during which he canvassed for votes, and the people of the state supported him massively. His speech, delivered mainly in Yoruba, can be translated thus: “When I came to Ibadan during the campaign and spoke at this same Mapo Hall, urging that you vote for me—that it was my turn to be president—you voted massively for me. I appreciate your support. I’m most grateful.”

Oba Ladoja boasts a rich network of friends and associates. In attendance at his inauguration, besides President Tinubu, were governors, former governors (some from the Class of 1999 and 2003), past and present National Assembly members, ministers, members of the diplomatic community, captains of industry, and many other dignitaries. Friends in the opposition who were unable to attend the inauguration visited him in the days that followed.

READ ALSO: INTIMATE AFFAIRS: When forgiveness is hard (1)

The Oba Ladoja story is an inspirational tale of fortitude, grit, courage, and determination—qualities emblematic of a true Ibadan man. Through it all, Oba Ladoja kept his eyes on the big picture. Becoming Olubadan was his lifelong ambition. When his aspiration seemed threatened and he had to fight, he fought resolutely. When the situation demanded humility, he stooped to conquer. Ladoja initially resisted wearing a beaded crown, but in 2024, he eventually accepted it, embracing the then-evolving Ibadan chieftaincy arrangement.

At this point, I would like to share a humorous encounter I once had with Oba Ladoja. It was in the run-up to the 2003 governorship election, which he eventually won. The Punch newspaper had asked me to interview Ladoja ahead of the election.

The build-up to that election was very tense in Oyo State, especially in Ibadanland. Two sons of the soil—Ladoja and the late Alhaji Yekini Adeojo—were battling for the Peoples Democratic Party ticket to contest against the incumbent, the late Comrade Lamidi Adesina of the old Alliance for Democracy. Given the tension and rivalry between Ladoja and Adeojo, there were talks in some quarters of disqualifying both men, much like the late Prof. Femi Agbalajobi and Chief Dapo Sarumi were disqualified in Lagos by the Babangida regime in the run-up to the 1991 governorship election.

During the interview, I asked Ladoja about the possibility of his disqualification. His reply was both shocking and revealing: “What have we done in Ibadan? What has happened here to warrant our disqualification? Only one person’s leg was broken, and another person was blinded. What have we done?” I was flummoxed.

Though neither candidate was disqualified, in retrospect, that response—cold as it may have seemed—speaks to the nature and politics of Ibadan and the popular aphorism about its people’s pugnacious spirit.

The adage goes: “Ija igboro lo’ro Ibadan,” meaning an Ibadan man is never shy or afraid to pick a street fight.

With Oba Ladoja on the throne, it seems the full glory and power of Ibadan—the city of seven hills and the town Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka describes so glowingly in his memoir, “Ibadan: The Penkelemes Years”—are unfolding before our eyes. May the reign of Oba Ladoja be long, peaceful, and prosperous!

The 4th Chief of Defence Staff, CDS, Unity Basketball Championship concluded on Sunday, with Hoops and Read defeating Police Baton 55–52 to claim the title.

12 elite teams from South-West states competed fiercely for honours in the week-long championship.

In the final, Hoops and Read displayed composure and organisation, dictating the pace of the match from start to finish at the indoor sports hall.

Their superior ball control and teamwork kept them ahead, as Police Baton committed multiple turnovers and costly errors in the second and third quarters.

The first quarter ended 12–12, but Police Baton lost focus in the second, allowing Hoops and Read to take control with 17–8 and 14–9 quarter wins.

In spite of a late rally by Police Baton, led by veteran Kayode Balogun, their 13–11 final-quarter surge was not enough to overturn the deficit.

Dossou Mensah, Head Coach of Hoops and Read, said it was a tough game that required resilience and tactical discipline to secure victory.

“We knew it wouldn’t be an easy match. Police Baton have great experience, but our turnaround in the second quarter gave us confidence,” he said.

Police Baton’s Head Coach, Jonathan Odia, however, criticised the officiating, expressing disappointment with what he described as inconsistent refereeing.

“We had a good run in the tournament, and I commend the CDS for promoting youth engagement through sports,” Odia said.

Oluyole Warriors clinched third place after defeating Delta Force of Warri 68–55 in an entertaining bronze-medal contest.

Hoops and Read received ₦2 million as champions, while Police Baton and Oluyole Warriors earned ₦1.5 million and ₦1 million respectively.

The CDS, Gen. Christopher Musa, commended all participating teams for their outstanding performances and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

He praised the local organising committee for hosting a successful event that showcased discipline, teamwork, and national unity.

Musa reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s commitment to supporting youth development through basketball, football, and other sports across the federation.

Ibadan is great in many ways. Remarkable feats and uncommon achievements mark its 200-year history. In the annals of time, the great city has recorded many firsts and continues to set the pace for others to follow. And with its unrelenting quest for distinction framed by its unique socio-cultural and political trajectory, the city of Oluyole will continue to thrive and add more feathers to its cap, so long as human society evolves.

Ibadan once again proved its resilience and uncommon ability to weather the storm when its age-long royal succession practice was put to the test. Its royal institution was subjected to serious strain by those who thought that the best way to flaunt their ego and political prowess was to subject the esteemed institution to ridicule. They simply needed to score a point or assert their supremacy. They even enacted laws that pitted the people against each other. Many political and cultural gladiators, including this writer, were not spared the bashing.

Ibadan, in its usual candour, responded to this assault in the spirit of its epithet:

Ibadan maja-maja bii tojo kin-in-ni,

eyi too ja aladuugbo gbogbo logun,

Ibadan ki ba ni s’ore ai mu ni lo s’ogun.

Ibadan Ilu Kure!

Ibadan beere ki o too wo o,

Ni bi Olè gbe n j’are olohun.

B’Ibadan ti n gb’onile bee lo n gba Ajoji.

Eleyele lomi ti teru-tomo ‘Layipo n mu.

Asejire lomi abumu-buwe nile Ibadan.

A ki waye ka maa larun kan lara, Ija igboro larun Ibadan. IBADAN OMO APOROGUN JO, OMO AROGUN YO SESE…

This phrase, ‘Ibadan, beere ki o to wo o’ which simply translates thus: Ibadan, ask before you enter, has become the epitome of its military prowess and an expression of its exploits as a generalissimo in war. This war–loving landscape has evolved from a battlefield into a thriving city, dotted with landmarks of its rich history and heritage. It has reinvented itself as a home for all and developed a unique ability to resolve conflict without rocking the boat. Its time – tested self-regulatory mechanism distinguishes her among her peers. This unique epithet also serves as a warning sign to outliers not to meddle in the affairs of this great city, lest they burn their fingers.

This explains why the heated arguments and the conflicting opinions that trailed the government’s recent attempt to alter the criteria of ascension to the throne, fizzled out without degenerating into rancour among the contending parties. Traditionally – and without being immodest – Ibadan people have always loved one another, and the bond remains strong and unbreakable. Even more, Ibadan indigenes are known to be fearless and skilled in wielding truth as a weapon, without creating unnecessary enmity. This innate quality and character disposition foreground the agelong sobriquet of OMOLUABI bequeathed by our progenitors.

At this juncture, I cannot but acknowledge the wisdom of the elders of the land led by Asiwaju of Ibadan land, Chief Josiah Olabode Amoo, and his team, in navigating the difficult terrain of politics-induced near- crisis, that threatened the peace of the royal institution and Ibadan land as a whole. I equally acknowledge the sportsman’s spirit and the leadership role played by my friend, the President General of Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII) Barrister Sulaomon Ajeniyi Ajewole, who rallied the stakeholders to ensure the combatants succumbed to good reasoning and preserve the bond.

My brother, the governor, must be highly commended for his candour and large heartedness which enabled the return of peace to Ibadanland and Oyo State in general. It looked suicidal when I plunged into the murky waters of Ibadan politics and openly signed a statement, which endorsed Seyi Makinde for his second term in office despite the wrangling among the political heavyweights in the land. Many thought my palms had been greased. They were, however, alarmed when I took him headlong on the ascension tussle. Engineer Makinde took my criticisms in his usual unassuming stride and simply moved on. This suggests that honour makes a man, not the glitter of gold or paraphernalia of office. My respect, Mr. Governor.

Last but not the least is a man I referred to as RAL – Rasidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja – a quintessential personality whom I‘ve been closely associated with for over four decades. I have never been so lucky to have such a man as my father figure, next to my mentor whose identity l will not reveal for now, to avoid causing him embarrassment. They’re two of a kind. My close associates who are familiar with my life story and association with them could attest that these men are highly endowed, yet simple and selfless. To these two and others in their rank, I doff my heart.

Enter the 44th Olubadan

In the next couple of weeks, Rasidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja will be recording another milestone in his life and in the history of Ibadanland as he will be crowned as the 44th paramount ruler of the ancient city. Here’s a man with a date with destiny. He was not born with a silver spoon nor did he come from a wealthy background. It was through the dint of hard work that he built a reputation for success, which has become a source of inspiration to others. He is a mentor to many and a man of uncommon influence within his community, among friends and the larger society. Writing or talking about the new Olubadan will undoubtedly inspire the younger generation to aspire for success. His professional accomplishments and working experience as an engineer while serving at Total Energies spurred the young Rasidi to venture into entrepreneurship, starting with mechanical farming. His efforts culminated in the establishment of farms in many locations in the Oke Ogun area of Oyo state, including Yakoyo Farms in Igbeti. The success recorded in the venture led him to diversify into other areas of entrepreneurship, such as banking, shipping, manufacturing and broadcast media – with the establishment of two radio stations (Family FM and Noble FM) in Ibadan and Abeokuta respectively.

Ibadan should leverage Oba Ladoja’s unique blend of politics and culture to once again affirm its position as the political headquarters of the Yoruba race.

The first erroneous impression one may have of this unassuming man is that he’s a pushover. One would be surprised to discover that the personality behind this simple frame is a man imbued with wisdom and high degree of intellect; and endowed with the uncanny ability to navigate supposedly difficult terrains. Rasidi Adewolu is a quintessential man who will never say it is over when the game is still underway.

Ladoja entered the fray of politics in 1990 when he was persuaded by the trio – the late Dr. Dejo Raimi, a.k.a Denton; Chief Kolapo Isola, the former governor of Oyo State and the political garrison commander Lamidi Adedibu, to join politics. He needed to fill the space left by his father, late Pa Yunisa Popoola Ladoja who was a notable figure in Ibadan politics. Pa Ladoja had defeated the late strongman of Ibadan politics, Chief Lamidi Ariyibi Adedibu, in 1952 general elections to win a seat in the then Ibadan City Council election.

The junior Ladoja contested his first election in 1992 as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria representing Oyo South in the aborted Third Republic democratic transition, overseen by Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida’s military administration. Despite this seeming setback, he has remained consistent and unwavering in his hope of a better tomorrow. The annulment of the 1993 general elections allowed him to prove his mettle again when he joined forces with other democratic elements across the country to reject the annulment of what was adjudged the best and freest election in the country by global standards.

These leadership qualities emboldened his family – the ARUSA FAMILY- to present him to the then Olubadan -in-Council, as their chosen candidate for the post of MOGAJI AGBOLE ARUSA (the family head) in 1993. That was the beginning of his journey to the throne – a journey marked by perseverance, wisdom, integrity and resilience. These four qualities were the assets RAL journeyed with for nearly four decades. In the course of time, his political influence grew, as he brought his experience in the private and public sectors, as well as community services, to bear on his political enterprise.

In 2003, he contested and won the coveted governorship seat in Oyo State and became the 5th Executive Governor of the state. As a man who never shies away from challenges, he weathered the storm of impeachment while in office and came out stronger. What more would any mortal man wish for in life? Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja has seen it all – a senator, governor and now king-designate. He has enjoyed the goodness of God in his life and continues to do so, as he steps to the throne of Ibadanland.

It is to the credit of successive crowned heads of Ibadan – some of whom are unlettered – to have successfully navigated the contours of recent royal rumbles, as they deploy native wisdom, to blend the uncompromisable demands of tradition, with the flavour of modernity. They should be commended for not allowing these rumbles to impede the smooth administration of the city. The late Olubadan, Isaac Babalola Akinyele, was the first educated crowned head to add intellectual flavour into royal administration. It was during his time that many Ibadan socialites and educated minds gained recognition and assumed leadership positions as the head of their respective families.

READ ALSO: 91 Chibok schoolgirls still missing 10 years on -UN report

It was also during the reign of the late Oba Akinyele that documentation of the city’s history and royal activities began. Ibadan’s historical milestones and its chieftaincy lineage was painstakingly documented in the book authored by the late Olubadan known as IWE ITAN IBADAN, which became a reference point to date.

It is on record that successive Obas strived to sustain the legacy of Oba Akinyele and kept the flame of his innovative leadership burning. The goal was to ensure that Ibadan retained its pride of place among its peers. No doubt, more successes would have been recorded by these eminent royals, were it not for the strain of old age, which deprives many of them the energy with which Ibadan’s historical leaders were known. The wait-for-your-turn succession practice in Ibadan, prevents many of them from ascending the throne while they are still energetic.

Unfortunately, this practice does not fully fit into the mould of the late 19th-century custom, which prized leadership qualities and youthful vitality above biological age. This was why the energetic Oba Daniel Odetayo Akinbiyi, the 36th Olubadan, instituted a concept that ensures that each family unit comes up with a representation that could impact future generations.

The concept was elevated by Oba Oloyede Asanike’s Olubadan-in-Council, whose assiduous groundwork brought out technocrats, captains of industry, and business icons into the system. The ripple effect of the mix grill is what we witnessed under late Oba Moshood Olalekan Balogun, which trickles down to Oba Rashidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja’s tenure.

Under RAL’s able leadership, Ibadan is expected to enjoy greater prominence and development in all spheres of life as the former governor-king combines his political and cultural acumen to bear on the traditional administration of the city. Oba Ladoja has indeed left no one in doubt as to the innovations he is bringing into royal ‘governance’.

This was evidenced by his first public pre-coronation statement, where he charged his lieutenants to prioritize attention to security in their domain. “You’ll be held responsible for security breaches” –he warned the Mogajis and Baales. Pledging his readiness to attract investors to the ancient city and other parts of the state, Ladoja stressed that he would not allow any form of security breaches that could discourage investors.

Ladoja said, “You are the Chief Security Officers in your domains, and as such, you will be held responsible for any security lapse in your areas.

“You should have the knowledge of the happenings in your environment, and if you have any security challenge beyond your control, contact us; we will rise to the occasion and assist you immediately.”

Said he: A Mogaji or Chief in Ibadan is not just a title but a responsibility. We are looking at a situation where Mogajis and chiefs would not abandon their ancestral homes. By doing so, you can positively impact the younger generation seeking mentorship. You lived in this same society and became what God wanted you to be. Please, let us encourage the people at the grassroots by staying with them and sharing with them,” the statement quoted Ladoja as saying.

The Olubadan-designate believed that renovating dilapidated family houses and occasionally residing in them would help reduce cases of drug abuse and other social vices. He explained that it was in line with this vision that he had renovated his family house at Isale Osi, which he intends to visit regularly after his coronation.

These pre-coronation statements by the Oba-designate are heart-warming as they signpost a new dimension of leadership of the royal institution. The days to come promise to be a new chapter in Ibadan’s modern history, if Oba Ladoja could muster sufficient soft power and royal influence, to springboard the ancient city to an unprecedented level of security, development and positive cultural revitalization.

Ibadan should leverage Oba Ladoja’s unique blend of politics and culture to once again affirm its position as the political headquarters of the Yoruba race.

The federal government has approved N12, 000 as cost for dialysis under the Kidney Dialysis Subsidy scheme, as against the previous N50,000.

Mr Alaba Balogun, the Deputy Director/Head, Information and Public Relations, Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to Balogun, the significant move which will ease the cost of the treatment for patients is to save lives and reduce both physical and financial suffering, especially amongst vulnerable Nigerians.

“This intervention is a deliberate initiative of the present administration to bring relief to patients with kidney related diseases and expand access to Universal Health Coverage,” he said.

He noted that implementation of the pilot scheme was already ongoing in 11 Federal Tertiary Health institutions across the geo-political zones of the country and, would be expanded in due time.

The hospitals are Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, University of Jos Teaching Hospital, National Hospital, Abuja and Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Metta, Lagos.

Others are University College Hospital, Ibadan, University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa, Federal Teaching Hospital, Owerri and Federal Medical Centre, Abakaliki.

Balogun also noted that the federal government had not excluded the Northwestern states in the dialysis subsidy, and was committed to ensuring that no Nigerian was left behind in accessing healthcare services across the country under its renewed hope agenda.

He added that more federal hospitals would be added to the safety net to widen access for the subsidised dialysis sessions.

The federal government in 2024 initiated a programme to significantly reduce the cost of kidney dialysis by 80 per cent in selected federal tertiary health institutions.
