Staff members of the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, have petitioned Oyo State Real Property Protection Agency over the invasion of their landed properties in Ibadan.

The NAN employees, in the petition written by their solicitor, Ademola Sodamade, and dated December 11, 2025, alleged breach of peace, threat to life and malicious damage by some land speculators.

The petition listed Mr Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Mrs Oluwamayowa Ayinde and Mr Adewale Owoade among the owners of the land.

They said that some land speculators, allegedly led by one Mr Kazim, popularly known as Abija, had invaded the properties without any authorisation, removing all the beacons and signposts on the land.

The employees explained that they purchased 35 acres of land at Butubutu Village in Ona-Ara local government area of Oyo State between 2013 and 2014.

“After the perfection of the purchase, my clients partitioned the land and sold it to different individuals, majority of whom are staff of the News Agency of Nigeria, Ibadan branch.

“Surprisingly, however, about a few months ago, Mr Kazim, popularly known as Abija, the Mogaji of Ile Aje, in Ode-Aje, Ibadan, forcefully entered the land.

“He removed and carted away some of the signposts and destroyed some of the pillars on the land with a view to selling it to certain individuals.

“He threatened to kill anybody who dared to stop him from carrying out his plans on the sale of the land,” the petition read.

Consequently, the NAN employees appealed to the agency to come to their aid by stopping the illegal activities of the land speculators on the properties.

Copies of the petition, including agreement of purchases, land surveys, photographs of the land and other relevant documents, were also submitted to the Olubadan Committee on Land Grabbing, Office of the Deputy Governor as well as the Chief Press Secretary to Oyo State Governor, among others.

Speaking on the development, the chairman of NAN Housing Scheme in Ibadan Zonal Office, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, said that the concept was borne out of a cooperative arrangement among the staff members of the agency to own property through monthly contributions since 2013.

“It is very sad and disturbing that some hoodlums, under the guise of working for the state government, can forcefully encroach on the land, destroy all the farm produce, remove all the beacons and signposts installed there and threaten to kill and maim any of us on the site,” Balogun said.

Reigning African best goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie, starred as Nigeria’s Super Falcons showcased flair and grit in a 0-0 draw with hosts Portugal on Monday.

The nine-time African champions, aiming for a 10th title, arrived less than 24 hours before kick-off but showed no fatigue, matching the Portuguese stride for stride.

A poor back pass by Christy Ucheibe in the 6th minute allowed Diana Silva a chance, but her effort skewed wide of goal.

Three minutes later, Nnadozie claimed a cross brilliantly before Francisca Ordega’s slick move found Rasheedat Ajibade, whose clever shot almost beat Ines Pereira.

In the 24th minute, Nnadozie made another brilliant save as Portugal pressed, but solid defending ensured Nigeria kept the score line goalless.

Just before the break, Ordega was denied by a last-ditch challenge, and Rinsola Babajide’s final pass was over hit, missing a golden scoring chance.

After the interval, Nnadozie made three world-class saves in four minutes, denying Silva, Pinto, and Norton in quick succession.

Substitutes Ifeoma Onumonu, Ashleigh Plumptre and Halimatu Ayinde lifted Nigeria’s tempo, and Ordega’s fine pass in the 64th minute narrowly missed a finish.

The Falcons dominated the final 20 minutes.

Ordega hit the crossbar and Onumonu almost beat the goalkeeper after another superb Ordega assist.

Nigeria impressed throughout, leaving Portuguese fans in awe with a disciplined and stylish performance at the Estádio José Gomes.

The team departs Lisbon for Casablanca on Wednesday to face Ghana’s Black Queens in another friendly match on Sunday.

Nigeria’s first Women’s AFCON match will be on Saturday, July 6, against Tunisia in Casablanca.

It was a sunny day. Bright and warm; a day good for outdoor activities.

From an event in Alimoso, which is often touted as Nigeria’s largest local government, we rushed down to Obafemi Awolowo Way in Ikeja, where another event was underway – the opening of a block of beautiful offices.

Speeches over, it was time to inspect the building – a befitting testimony to the power of creative financing and good architecture. We moved from the expansive car park to the main door of the four-storey building. We got set to go upstairs, using the brand-new, glittering elevator.

I’m always wary of using elevators since I got stuck in one in the United States. I had seen technicians working on it and was satisfied that all was well with it, but less than one minute after we moved, it went quiet and remained so for a few minutes before it jerked back to life, and we moved on. What a relief!

“Don’t worry; this one is new and, of course, it has been well tested,” said the former Special Adviser on Works and Infrastructure, Mrs. Aramide Adeyoye, a frontline engineer with an incredible passion for her job. I believed her.

Chief of Staff Tayo Ayinde, Mrs. Adeyoye and I went into the elevator. We were joined by a gentleman whose identity I really didn’t know. The door closed. Then, the unexpected (?) happened. The elevator would not move. We were stuck.

“This is what I was saying. I don’t like elevators,” I grumbled. In no time, I started to sweat. “Calm down. Just calm down,” the Chief said in a cool and confident voice that betrayed no emotion. “It will work; no need to panic,” he added. Mrs Adeyoye joined in the confidence-boosting pep talk. I kept quiet. Within me a volcanic feeling was building up.

I wished the people watching us, who obviously knew we were in trouble, could do something. They seemed helpless after pressing the buttons for some time. They – the next batch of guests waiting to go in – actually sensed that something was wrong. Through the transparent door of the elevator, they saw us fiddling with the machine’s buttons and they raised the alarm. An official came and wondered why they had not gone up. They told him of our predicament. He moved to the machine and pressed the button. The door opened and we came out, sweating – and sober. Needless to say, we made the trip upstairs by foot.

Interestingly, that five-minute experience says a lot about Mr. Tayo Akinmade Ayinde. He is calm – and confident – in the face of gripping anxiety and confusion.

To some, he is simply Tayo. Others, especially his friends in politics, call him Buffalo – they say he shares some qualities of that animal (a rare physical strength and survival instinct in a jungle filled up with many dangerous creatures). Those in government circles call him “Chief” – a short form of the title of his office, Chief of Staff.

READ ALSO: INTIMATE AFFAIRS: Financial terrorist husbands

From being Chief Detail to then Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu (1999 – 2007), now President and Commander-in- Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Ayinde has remained relevant in political and government circles. He has proven to be an experienced marathoner, who is always at home with politicians, even as he is comfortable in the company of technocrats and ordinary folks, who excitedly scream, “Buffalo! Buffalo!” when they see him.

Whichever way he chooses to mark his birthday, August 24, one thing is sure – Mr. Tayo Akinmade Ayinde will see an army of admirers who will wine, dine and dance with him while singing, “Happy birthday to you!”.

Slim, fit and tall, Mr. Ayinde is easy to spot in a crowd. He is friendly, fair and firm. A visitor will always be sure of a face wreathed in smiles after leaving the Chief’s office. Little wonder the place is always filled up with those who come to seek his favour.

Chief hardly gets angry. He rarely shouts and keeps no malice. He would always throw open any matter of discontent and tell you to your face, “I’m not happy with you”. If you’re convinced that you’re wrong and you apologise, that ends the matter.

At Executive Council meetings, Mr. Ayinde is always ready to lend his institutional experience to throw light on issues that require some flashback, which will enable the state’s highest policy making body to take a decision on any matter.

Unknown to many people, Chief is a humorous man who loves to laugh and make people laugh. At a recent Executive Council retreat, his group carried the day at the Gala Night – not because its presentation was the most cerebral; nor because it was the most colourful. Nor was it the most beautiful.

When it was the team’s turn to take the podium, it simply marched in a convoy of men and women dressed like some Arabian magicians and chanting some esoteric tunes. “Rajaaah! Rajaaah! Rajaah Rajaah!!” they hummed. The hall burst into an uncontrollable bout of laughter.

When it all ended, Chief’s group carried the day; humour beat action – thanks to the Chief’s wonderful sense of humour.

For me, it is fit and proper to celebrate Chief at 60, but the question to ask is, “How will he like to celebrate the day?” A trip to the past, tracing the trajectory of his public and private life? A big party with an A-class artiste on the band stand? A trip on the waterways to one of our beautiful beaches to savour the majesty of nature? A quiet time of prayers in church, followed by a cheerful session of praise and worship? A tournament of youngsters playing his favourite game of table tennis? Some time indoors, eyes glued to the television, to watch Arsenal play?

It is also fit and proper to offer some words of prayer – that The Almighty will continue to be with Mr Ayinde and keep him as fit as a fiddle.

Whichever way he chooses to mark his birthday, August 24, one thing is sure – Mr. Tayo Akinmade Ayinde will see an army of admirers who will wine, dine and dance with him while singing, “Happy birthday to you!”.

Testimonies poured out in torrents for the late Deputy Chief of Staff, DCoS, to Lagos State Governor, Mr. Gboyega Olumade Soyannwo, as colleagues, friends and relatives gathered, on Tuesday, at a Night of Tributes to share memories of their moments and encounters with him.

The accolades, profound accounts of the deceased’s professional conducts and virtue of his generosity shared by those who had encounters with the deceased literally became the consoling legacy left for the bereaved family, just as the good testimonies dispersed the pall of grief that had enveloped Alausa — the seat of the Lagos State Government — since the passing of the State’s Executive Council member.

Soyannwo, 55, breathed his last on May 15, after a brief illness.

He is survived by wife and two children.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, his Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, led members of the State Executive Council, members of the State’s legislature and the judiciary to the Night of Tribute held at Alausa Sports Ground, as part of the funeral programmes organised for the deceased.

Sanwo-Olu, in an emotive tone, described the late Sayannwo as the “rallying point” in the Governor’s Office, extolling the deceased’s commitment and his dedication to any cause to which he had conviction.

The governor, who said Soyannwo’s death was a personal loss to him, revealed that he and the deceased had been together for 20 years, as they both had their stints in the banking sector, before moving to government together.

Sanwo-Olu recalled that the late Soyannwo was the first staff in his team immediately he declared his intention to run for governor, noting that the deceased showed up in his house 24 hours after with a well thought-out strategy to go about party primaries.

The governor said: “From the moment I was sworn in till today, Gboyega had made me a better manager than I was. He helped me to be a better Governor. He managed my daily itinerary and understood what the job entails. For once in the last five years when I appointed him as my Deputy Chief of Staff, I never had the cause to raise my voice at him because he fully understood the dynamics and tedious tasks of his office. He was the rallying point of my office.

“Gboyega made indelible impacts in the lives of each and every one of us. In the classes of the past and current cabinet, we have just lost our strongest confidant and a true bridge builder. Gboyega would call me 33 times in 25 minutes and each call would be quick to get my final approval for tasks listed in my itinerary. I’ve lost a great friend, brother and cherished colleague. Lagos has lost one of its finest public servants. I will forever be thankful to God for making our paths cross.”

Sanwo-Olu said the late Soyannwo was “fiercely loyal” and never coloured his official duties with friendship throughout his career.

The governor said smooth organisation was not only the late Soyannwo’s main skill which stood him out as a professional banker.

READ ALSO: Naira gains N3.31 against dollar at official market

“Give him a very difficult spreadsheet to analyse or transactions that anyone has no idea to unravel, Gboyega would resolve it in a simplified way. That’s how he started in banking industry,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He continued: “I certainly will not be here to mourn Gboyega’s death, but to celebrate his life and legacy left behind in service of our great country. He has done more than anyone can expect of a 55-year-old. He showed us there is reward for hard work. Gboyega taught all of us how to live well and make lasting impact on humanity.”

Dr. Hamzat recalled his first meeting with the late Soyannwo in 2018 ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primaries, pointing out that the deceased was a man who was careful with promises.

The Deputy Governor said the late DCoS never used any word carelessly, noting that his words were his bond.

“Any agreement reached with DCoS is cast in stone, he would never shift ground on agreed terms,” Dr. Hamzat noted.

Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mrs Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, broke down in tears, as she made a moving tribute on behalf of the Executive Council members, describing the late Soyannwo’s death as “painful loss”.

She said the late Deputy Chief of Staff was the revolving door of the Sanwo-Olu administration that interfaced with all ranks and streamlined the governance process for smooth flow of Government’s programmes.

“DCoS was a team player for the good of our principal. His ability to inspire and galvanise others for result-oriented actions was unparalleled. He left an indelible mark on our administration and the State. The Executive Council will miss his intellectual contribution, his camaraderie and sense of humour. As we bid farewell to our departed brother, we take solace in the memories we shared together as one family,” Salu-Hundeyin said.

Chief of Staff, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, eulogised his deputy, noting the late Soyannwo left at the time he had so much to offer to humanity.

“He was a dedicated, meticulous and committed public servant who was always passionate to serve the people. His loyalty was total and he never chickened out of agreed decisions,” Ayinde said.

Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro, who attended the same primary school with the deceased, recalled the late Soyannwo’s astuteness and problem-solving ability since their days as schoolchildren.

“The late Gboyega would not look out for himself alone; he would look out for others and take their wellbeing personally. He was a gifted and extraordinary problem solver. If you share any problem with DCoS, he would properly analyse it for you as if he initiated the problem and he would proffer two solutions, not one.”

Shooting Stars Sports Club, 3SC, of Ibadan on Sunday became joint top leaders of the ongoing 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, after beating visiting Kano Pillars Football Club 1-0.

The Shooting Stars scored through substitute Kareem Ayinde in the 55th minute of the Match Day 9 fixture to move to 17 points.

Their points haul from nine matches came from five wins and two draws, but their +3 goals difference dropped them down to third place on the log.

This is because Doma United of Gombe and Lobi Stars of Makurdi, both also with 17 points each, have better goals difference of +5 and +4 respectively.

During the Sunday match played before a massive crowd at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, 3SC had several opportunities to score many goals but wasted them.

Ayobami Adekunle and Ayobami Junior wasted a couple of chances, while Abdullahi Lawal and Akpan Joshua were rather unfortunate not to have scored.

Kano Pillars were also unlucky not to have scored through skipper Rabiu Ali whose second half free-kick was turned back by the cross-bar.

Governor Sanwo-Olu gave the charge at the annual interdenominational thanksgiving service for the Year 2023 Lagos State Public Service Week held at Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Ikeja, with the theme: “A Transformed Life for a Greater Service.”

Sanwo-Olu was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, at the thanksgiving service, which was part of the activities lined up to commemorate the Public Service Week.

READ ALSO: Lagos: Relief for motorists as government re-opens Eko Bridge

The service was also attended by the First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, represented by Mrs. Bukola Akosile; Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Barr. (Mrs.) Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin; Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, Permanent Secretaries, and hundreds of civil servants.

Speaking during the service, Governor Sanwo-Olu commended Lagos State civil servants for their support, saying their contributions to the success of his administration could not be over-emphasised.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who restated his government’s commitment to staff welfare, promised that his administration would not relent in improving the welfare of civil servants by providing a conducive environment and rewarding hard work.

Lagos State First Lady who was represented by Mrs Bukola Akosile, the wife of the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, read the Bible Passage taken from Romans 12: 1-8.

In his goodwill message, the Head of Service, Mr Hakeem Muri-Okunola, commended all workers for their diligence to deliver dividends of democracy to all Lagos residents and prayed for the repose of workers who died last year.

Muri-Okunola, who disclosed that the essence of the event was to continually thank God, urged civil servants to continue to render quality service selflessly as they pray and support Governor Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ Agenda.

In his sermon, the Guest Minister, Prof. Samuel Daramola, a Provincial Pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Lagos Province 69 Ogudu, said Lagos State had every reason to celebrate God for what He had done in the lives of civil servants and the state.

He said public servants were the engine of development who could bring forth economic growth and therefore urged them to be upright and Godly in all their dealings.

The cleric also urged Lagos State Government to declare a Thanksgiving Day to praise God.

During the service, prayers were offered by clerics for Lagos State, Nigeria, Governor Sanwo-Olu, his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, the legislature, judiciary, and all public servants in Lagos State.
