The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Awka.

“As part of the ongoing security review and sustained offensive against violent crimes, the Anambra Police Command has recorded significant operational breakthroughs with the arrest of four suspected kidnappers.

“They were involved in separate kidnapping and armed robbery incidents across the state,” he said.

Ikenga said that on July 16, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, Awkuzu, in collaboration with detectives from the Ogbaru Divisional Police Station, foiled a suspected kidnap plot in Iyiowa, Odekpe, Atani in Ogbaru local government area of the state.

“The team arrested three male suspected members of a kidnapping syndicate, and recovered a black Toyota Camry with tinted glasses and Lagos Registration number LND 789HR, believed to have been used by the gang for its operations.

“The suspects are Chekwube Chukwu, 32; Amarachukwu Nwobosi, 34 and Sopuluchukwu Ifeakor, 30 years respectively,” he said.

He said that preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects were intercepted while actively attempting to abduct a female Point of Sale, POS, operator at Atani in Ogbaru local government area, in the morning.

The police spokesman said that the victim raised an alarm, which attracted the attention of some residents and prompted a swift response by the police following a distress call.

The PPRO said that the timely intervention by the police frustrated the kidnap attempt, leading to the rescue of the victim and subsequent arrest of the suspects.

According to him, further investigation linked the suspects to the earlier kidnapping of another female POS operator at Dominion Park, Head Bridge, Onitsha, on June 3, 2026.

He said that the suspects dispossessed the operator of two POS machines and Android phones, and compelled the family to pay a ransom of N3.5 million, before she was released.

He said that during interrogation, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the crimes.

Ikenga said that the suspects were currently providing useful information to assist the police in identifying and arresting their criminal receivers and other members of the syndicate operating within the state.

The police spokesman further said that in the afternoon of July 15 2026, police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, Awkuzu, arrested one Johnbosco Okoye (Bone), 32.

Ikenga who did not mention the area the suspect was arrested said that the arrest was in continuation with the ongoing investigation into the kidnapping of a victim at Okpanam, Asaba, Delta State.

He explained that the victim was abducted, robbed, and forced to pay a ransom before regaining his freedom.

The PPRO said that during a search on the suspect, the operatives recovered one locally fabricated pistol, two live rounds of ammunition, one axe, and one Itel Android phone bearing the victim’s photograph as its screensaver.

He said that the suspect confessed to the crime and efforts were ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang currently at large.

Ikenga said that the operations underscored the command’s commitment to dismantling criminal networks and improving public safety in the state.

The command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to support the police with timely and credible information to enhance security across the state.

The Sector Commander, Mrs Bridget Asekhauno, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Awka.

Asekhauno said the crash occurred on Friday near St. Jude Catholic Church, Adazi-Ani, and involved a Mercedes-Benz 608 commercial truck with registration number XB270NNL.

She said preliminary investigation indicated that the truck developed a mechanical fault while in motion, caught fire and the driver lost control before crashing into a roadside barricade and somersaulting.

According to her, the impact trapped some of the occupants as the vehicle was engulfed in flames.

“The crash involved seven male occupants. Three persons died, while four others sustained serious injuries,” she said.

The sector commander said FRSC rescue personnel received the distress call and arrived at the scene.

She added that officers immediately carried out traffic control, diverted vehicles to the opposite lane to ease traffic flow and arranged for the burnt truck to be towed off the road.

Asekhauno expressed sympathy to the families of the deceased and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.

She reiterated the corps’ commitment to prompt emergency response and effective road safety enforcement across the state.

The FRSC boss urged motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to ensure their vehicles were mechanically sound before embarking on journeys.

She also cautioned drivers against conveying flammable or hazardous materials in passenger compartments or under unsafe conditions, stressing the need for regular vehicle maintenance to prevent avoidable crashes.

Asekhauno reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to protecting lives and property on the nation’s highways and called on residents in Anambra to make road safety a priority.

The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, issued the warning while addressing the managements of Mount Olive Schools and Spring Field Academy GRA, Onitsha, in her office on Wednesday.

Chuma-Udeh said the directive followed instructions from Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

The schools were summoned to explain the alleged noncompliance with the government’s order on Monday school attendance.

She said: “This measure is in line with the State Government’s resolve to ensure full resumption of academic activities on Mondays across Anambra.

“I urge schools to comply with the directive,” the commissioner said.

While the management of Mount Olive Schools claimed attendance had improved, Spring Field Academy said parents were reluctant to bring their children to school on Mondays.

Both schools pledged to intensify efforts to ensure regular attendance by students.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education, through the Examination Development Centre, has conducted the 2026 Transition Placement Examination.

Chuma-Udeh said she monitored the exercise at the various centres, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Ifeoma Agbaizu.

The centres visited included UNIZIK Demonstration School, Igwebeze Primary School and Igwebuike Grammar School, all located in Awka.

Mrs Bridget Asekhauno, Sector Commander (FRSC), in Anambra, confirmed the incident to journalists in Awka.

Asekhauno said the incident involved a commercial tanker with no registration number, conveying inflammable content and a motorcycle with no registration number.

“Eyewitnesses said the tanker driver who was on speed, lost control and rammed into a roadside barricade before an explosion occurred, which also affected a motorcycle trailing behind.

“The explosion led to the deaths of the tanker driver and his conductor, while the motorcycle rider sustained injuries and was rescued.

“A total of three male adults were involved in the crash, with two fatalities recorded while one injured victim was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala, for treatment.”

The sector commander explained that FRSC rescue operatives, alongside personnel of the fire service, responded promptly to the incident and successfully extinguished the fire.

She commiserated with the families of the deceased and urged motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and remain attentive while driving to prevent avoidable crashes.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PRO, in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Awka.

Ikenga said that the arrest was carried out by operatives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Awka, on January 7.

He described as false the rumours circulating that the crime was committed by persons the suspect owed money.

The police spokesman said that during interrogation the suspect confessed to stabbing the victim in the neck with a knife, an act that led to her death.

He explained that the incident occurred on December 9, 2025.

Ikenga said that the suspect had confessed to have committed the act over alleged suspicion of infidelity.

He said that the suspect added that his huge financial investment on the victim made him bankrupt and emotionally distressed, which led to the fatal act.

He said that the suspect also confessed to dropping a fake letter claiming to have been kidnapped by creditors, in a bid to avoid suspicions.

Ikenga said that as part of ongoing investigative procedures, detectives had visited the morgue, where the deceased’s body was deposited.

He noted that the tragic incident had sparked outrage and renewed conversations around domestic violence and relationship-related crimes within the community.

“The Command therefore urged the public to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving disputes and to report early signs of domestic violence to security agencies to prevent avoidable tragedies.”

He said that the suspect would be charged to court on conclusion of investigations.

Mrs Bridget Asekhauno, Anambra Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, confirmed the crash to journalists in Awka.

She said the accident resulted from reckless driving and involved a yellow and black tipper, registration FGG21XV, and a red bus, registration XQ398AA.

“An eyewitness on the bus said it was travelling from Ebonyi to Onitsha after a Catholic Women Organisation burial.

“The bus driver attempted dangerous overtaking to make up lost time, causing a head-on collision with the tipper,” Asekhauno said.

Thirty-two people were involved, including nine men and 23 women.

The crash killed two men and four women, while five women were injured.

Twenty-one other occupants escaped unharmed. The victims were taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, where deaths were confirmed by medical staff.

FRSC officers cleared the scene promptly, restoring normal traffic flow along the expressway.

Asekhauno described the accident as preventable, warning: “This tragic incident highlights the devastating consequences of reckless driving.”

She extended sympathies to victims’ families, urging motorists to obey traffic laws, avoid aggressive overtaking, and prioritise safety.

She reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to enforcing traffic regulations, raising road safety awareness, and providing timely rescue services during emergencies.

Ikenga stated that the suspects were caught, following a report that somebody was abducted in his farm at Isiagu, and later released after ransom was paid.

“The command in a swift operation on August 27, caught five suspected members of a notorious armed robbery and kidnapping syndicate.”

According to him, acting on credible intelligence, Police operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu, stormed the suspects’ hideout at Notoko, Awka.

“The operation led to the detention of the following persons: Michael Nwobodo, male, 30; Friday Eze, male, 29; Uche Okolo, male, 23; Chinedu Gilbert, male 29 and Dominic Oraz, male, 38,” the PPRO added.

He further stated that some of the exhibits recovered from the suspects, included six automatic pump-action guns, 63 rounds of live cartridges, one microscope, five machetes, one military cap, two police teargas canisters and handcuffs.

Other items were one rocket launcher, charms, three Motorola walkie-talkies, one jack knife, one power bank and ₦26,000 cash.

The police spokesman said that during interrogation, Oraz confessed to having deserted the Nigerian Army in November 2024.

He said that the command had commenced enquiry with the army authorities to guide the police action and prosecution of other suspects.

Ikenga quoted the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, as commending the operatives for their gallantry.

Orutugu was also reported to have urged residents of the state to remain law-abiding and vigilant and continue to report suspicious activities to the police for prompt action.

“He also assured residents of the command’s unwavering commitment to combating violent crimes in the state,” the statement added.

According to the statement, police from Oba Divisional Police Office, and vigilance group in the state, on April 16, raided an uncompleted building at Isu Village in Oba, Idemili-South Local Government Area and arrested six suspects.

He added that the suspects allegedly hired four sick persons to  beg for alms from members of the public.

The suspects were identified as Doris Basil, 28; Peter Ezedike, 38; Susan Monday, 27; Ogechi Okoro, 27; Solomon Sunday, 29, and Kenneth Achi, 29.

The police spokesman also stated that the operatives recovered six mobile phones and ₦82,400 in  ₦50, ₦100 and ₦200 denominations.

He added that the command also took into custody the four sick persons suspected to be suffering from brain tumour, breast cancer, and other terminal ailments.

Ikenga further stated that the command provided first aid for the sick persons and sought higher intervention for their treatment and safe return to their various families.

The statement quotes the Commissioner of Police (CP) in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, as saying that the offence contravened Section 419 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act, which deals with obtaining property by false pretence, also known as “419 fraud”.

“It is a felony that carries a potential penalty of three years imprisonment,” the CP reportedly said.

He also expressed concern over the level of moral decadence among some Nigerians, who take undue advantage of sick persons to make quick money.

The statement also quotes him to have directed the immediate interrogation of the relatives of the sick persons to ascertain their culpability.

It noted that all the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.

She said the accident could be attributed to route violation, resulting in a head-on collision.

Alexander said the crash involved a private Toyota Hummer bus with registration number UWN763XA, a government-owned Toyota Hummer bus without registration number, and a Mercedes-Benz tipper.

“According to eyewitnesses, one of the vehicles drove against traffic, collided with two other vehicles and crashed.

“A total of five male adults were involved in the crash. Four died and one sustained injuries.

“It is important to note that the FRSC rescue team was initially hindered in performing their duties due to an attack by local youths from the Oba community.

“The rescue operation was, however, carried out by the Anambra State Anti-tout personnel.

“FRSC team is currently managing traffic, and the crashed vehicles have been cleared from the road, allowing for a smooth flow of traffic,” Alexander said.

While condoling the families of the dead victims, the Sector Commander advised motorists against dangerous driving and route violations, especially on the expressway.

She also appealed to the public to allow FRSC team to carry out rescue operations and clearing of obstructions, as any delay could cause loss of lives.

“Drive to stay alive; safety is everyone’s responsibility, ” she said.

Obi said the Council, therefore, invited applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position.

Obi, also the Secretary of Council, said the announcement was effective from January 2 and would last for eight weeks.

Obi said applicants should be professors with cognate experience in university leadership, teaching, and research.

“The Vice-Chancellor shall hold office for a single, non-renewable tenure of not more than five years subject to good behaviour,” he said.

Obi said the applicants should possess a minimum of at least 15 years of experience in teaching, research, service and/or leadership in the university system within or outside Nigeria.

Such a persons, he said, should have demonstrable qualities in academic and moral leadership.

He said vacancy excluded those who would be 65 years old at the date of appointment and shall also possess a doctorate degree in a field of study tenable in the university.

“The candidate shall provide evidence of successful supervision of postgraduate students especially at the Ph.D. level.

“The candidate shall be physically and mentally fit to undertake the duties required of a Vice-Chancellor and other assigned functions as directed by the University Governing Council.

“They should accompany their applications with a written essay spelling out his or her vision and ambitions for the University,” he said.

This, he said, should include an indicative sequencing or implementation framework for the ideas in not more than 750 words.

“The referees shall include at least one male and one female including a non-Nigerian conversant with the work, ideas, values and abilities of the candidate.

“The reference shall include an explicit certification that the candidate has had no hand in the preparation of the confidential report to be forwarded directly to the Registrar,” Obi said.

He said the vacancy was open to all persons irrespective of sex, race, ethnicity, place of origin, religion, political affiliation, nationality and class.
