The National Primary Health Care Agency, NPHCDA, said 513,626 persons have received the first dose of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine across the country.

The NPHCDA disclosed this in its official Twitter handle on Sunday.

Nigeria commenced vaccination since March 5, first with healthcare workers who are mostly at risk of infections being the first responders.

NPHCDA said that the vaccine roll-out would be in four phases, starting with health workers, frontline workers, COVID-19 rapid response team, laboratory network, policemen, petrol station workers and strategic leaders.

“Phase 2 – Older adults aged 50 years and above, those with co-morbidities, aged between 18 years and 49 years.

“Phase 3 – Those in states/LGAs with high disease burden and who missed phases 1 and 2.

“Phase 4 – Other eligible population as vaccines become available,” it said.

According to the agency, as at March 28, over 513,626 eligible people have been vaccinated in 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The agency said that Kogi State was yet to commence vaccination as at March 28, because the state had not been supplied with the vaccines.

“Kogi State was not supplied with the vaccines because their cold store is still under repairs following vandalisation during the EndSARS protest,” it stated.

The NPHCDA stated Lagos State had vaccinated 110,042 people, making it the highest in the country.

It said Ogun followed with 47,507, Kaduna-38,063, Bauchi-32,482, Katsina-28,918 and Kwara-26,473.

NPHCDA also said that the states with the lowest number of those vaccinated were Abia-22, Taraba-111 and Kebbi-532,

Nigeria first received 3.94 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines and another 300,000 doses from telecom giant, MTN, as part of the latter’s contribution to Africa.

The Nigerian government hopes to vaccinate 109 million people against the COVID-19 virus over a period of two years.

An Emirate plane — Boeing 777300ER, carrying 3.92 million doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine arrived Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport Abuja in Nigeria at 11.36 a.m. on Tuesday.

The vaccine shipment is from COVAX, a global scheme to procure and distribute inoculations for free, as the world races to contain the coronavirus pandemic.

The Boeing 777300ER Emirate aircraft has a cooling system.

Nigeria is the third country to receive the vaccine in Africa after Ghana and Cote d’voire from the COVAX facility, launched in April 2020 to ensure fairer distribution of the coronavirus vaccine between rich and poor nations.

A total of two billion doses is expected to be delivered to COVAX member nations by the end of 2021 and the 3.92 million doses is Nigeria’s first shipment from the 16 million doses initially expected in the country.

The 3.92 million doses of vaccine was licenced by the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, the Serum Institute of India as part of an initial tranche of deliveries headed to several low and middle-income countries which Nigeria is part of.

Earlier, Dr Faisal Shuaib, the Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA, said “we have been informed that four million out of the 16 million doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines would arrive in the first batch of supplies to the country.”

Shuaib said the agency established a national COVID-19 operations room to track planned activities at all levels and report on state of preparedness, using a dash board to also identify and address gaps promptly.

According to him, an additional 500,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine donated by telecom giant, MTN, will also be delivered to the country.

Meanwhile, Mr Boss Mustapha, the Chairman of the Presidential Task Force, PTF, on COVID-19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, assured that “Nigeria shall receive the initial four million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccines and Nigerians will be adequately informed on developments.

“The multi-sectoral machinery will be deployed to enhance the logistics to the ‘last-mile administration’ processes that have been put in place. This will involve community mobilisation, training, transportation, storage, operations, among others.

“The real work involves every sub-national entities, communities, the citizens, and the civil societies.”

Mustapha also said “the issue of vaccines continues to dominate discussions and major policy and financial decisions by various countries of the world.

“As you are aware, NAFDAC in the course of the week granted emergency use authorisation for the use of AstraZeneca vaccine in Nigeria. This decision was reached after due process by the regulatory body.”
