Mrs Bridget Asekhauno, Sector Commander (FRSC), in Anambra, confirmed the incident to journalists in Awka.

Asekhauno said the incident involved a commercial tanker with no registration number, conveying inflammable content and a motorcycle with no registration number.

“Eyewitnesses said the tanker driver who was on speed, lost control and rammed into a roadside barricade before an explosion occurred, which also affected a motorcycle trailing behind.

“The explosion led to the deaths of the tanker driver and his conductor, while the motorcycle rider sustained injuries and was rescued.

“A total of three male adults were involved in the crash, with two fatalities recorded while one injured victim was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Ihiala, for treatment.”

The sector commander explained that FRSC rescue operatives, alongside personnel of the fire service, responded promptly to the incident and successfully extinguished the fire.

She commiserated with the families of the deceased and urged motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and remain attentive while driving to prevent avoidable crashes.

Mrs Bridget Asekhauno, Anambra Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, confirmed the crash to journalists in Awka.

She said the accident resulted from reckless driving and involved a yellow and black tipper, registration FGG21XV, and a red bus, registration XQ398AA.

“An eyewitness on the bus said it was travelling from Ebonyi to Onitsha after a Catholic Women Organisation burial.

“The bus driver attempted dangerous overtaking to make up lost time, causing a head-on collision with the tipper,” Asekhauno said.

Thirty-two people were involved, including nine men and 23 women.

The crash killed two men and four women, while five women were injured.

Twenty-one other occupants escaped unharmed. The victims were taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, where deaths were confirmed by medical staff.

FRSC officers cleared the scene promptly, restoring normal traffic flow along the expressway.

Asekhauno described the accident as preventable, warning: “This tragic incident highlights the devastating consequences of reckless driving.”

She extended sympathies to victims’ families, urging motorists to obey traffic laws, avoid aggressive overtaking, and prioritise safety.

She reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to enforcing traffic regulations, raising road safety awareness, and providing timely rescue services during emergencies.

Asekhauno told newsmen in Awka that the container dislodged from a trailer and fell on the tricycle due to failed portion of the road.

The FRSC boss said the accident occurred at about 8.20 a.m.

“The fatal crash involved two unidentified drivers of a red colour tricycle with no registration number and a trailer which also has no registration number.

“Eyewitnesses reported that the cause of the crash was a poorly maintained section of the road, which caused the trailer’s container to fall on the tricycle.

“A total of four men were involved in the crash and two were killed.

“The FRSC tow van was deployed to lift the trailer off the tricycle allowing for the clearance of the obstruction.

“The team in collaboration with the Police took the victims, who were trapped under the trailer to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival,” he said.

The sector commander said that the obstruction had been cleared to ensure free traffic flow.

She urged road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic rules to prevent such incident.
