The Police command in Ondo State has rescued a four-year-old girl, Jesinta Sunday, who was sold for ₦3.7 million in Asaba.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, confirmed the development in a statement on Thursday in Akure, adding that two suspects had been arrested.

He said the case began on February 3 2025, when one Sunday Kingsley reported his daughter missing while living with his wife, Sunday Happiness.

According to Ayanlade, the case was transferred to the monitoring unit for discreet investigation, and later charged before the Family Magistrate Court in Akure.

The child’s mother, Nneka Onah, and Sunday Happiness were remanded at the Ondo Correctional Centre before later being granted bail.

A breakthrough came on July 9, when Kingsley reported sighting his missing daughter in Asaba, prompting swift police action.

Detectives from the command’s Gender Desk Team recovered the child safely and returned her to Akure, while arresting one Amaka Chukwuemeka, aged 30.

READ ALSO: Online publisher, Ajagbe, presents ‘GAC Frame’ to Lagos Speaker, Obasa

Chukwuemeka confessed she bought the child for ₦3.7 million, adding that she was introduced by her friend, Chinaza Owoh, aged 38.

She further alleged that the child was handed over by 58-year-old Mabel Esimai, who provided forged adoption documents to facilitate the transaction.

Police investigations later confirmed that Esimai allegedly received the child from another woman, Chioma Okechukwu, aged 37, with instructions to secure a buyer.

Ayanlade said the discoveries exposed a well-organised trafficking network spanning Ondo, Delta, and Anambra states, highlighting the scale of the criminal enterprise.

He added that the command commended the Gender Desk Team for their diligence, professionalism, and swift response in rescuing the child.

He noted that the command also directed investigators to uncover all collaborators and ensure prosecution of the suspects, stressing that Ondo would not harbour child traffickers or syndicates.

The 9th National Youth Games officially kicked off on Friday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declaring the event open.

The president was represented by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications and former Minister of Sports Mr. Sunday Dare.

In his remarks, President Tinubu described the Games as a “veritable platform for discovering and nurturing talents” that have gone on to represent Nigeria at local, continental, and international levels.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports development, stressing that sports remained a unifying force for the nation.

“Very recently, we witnessed the president, alongside the First Lady, cheering the Super Falcons and the D’Tigress. That show of support underscores the administration’s firm commitment to continue investing in sports and strengthening development across the country,” he said.

The president commended the National Sports Commission under the leadership of Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade for their efforts in promoting youth and grassroots development.

READ ALSO: Takeaways from Harvard strategic leadership programme

He also lauded the Delta State government for hosting the Games, noting that Asaba had gradually become the headquarters of sports competitions in Nigeria.

Declaring the Games open, Tinubu wished the athletes well, praying that “the best teams, the best states, and the best athletes will shine.”

Speaking on behalf of the host state, Delta Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, described the event as a celebration of Nigeria’s youth, unity, and future.

He said Delta State, regarded as the Home of Champions, has consistently produced sports icons such as Stephen Keshi, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, Blessing Okagbare, and Ese Brume.

According to him, the state has continued to back this tradition with heavy investments in modern sporting facilities, youth empowerment, and grassroots competitions.

“Hosting this Games for the third time in a row is a proof of our commitment to grassroots sports. We believe in catching them young, giving our youth the platform to excel and bring glory to Nigeria,” he added.

Chairman of the Main Organising Committee and Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, described the Youth Games as central to building a strong pathway that links grassroots talent to elite performance and podium success.

Earlier, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr Onoriode Oborevwori, assured participants of an excellent hosting experience.

“From upgraded facilities to efficient logistics and a welcoming environment, Asaba is set to offer not just a sporting event, but a memorable experience,” he said.

Established in 2013, the National Youth Games serves as a platform for talent discovery and national unity.

Delta State, hosting for the third consecutive time, has dominated the competition by winning all eight previous editions.

This year, over 6,000 athletes from across the country are competing for medals in 37 sports at the Games.

In a bold push to support the transformation of healthcare delivery in Nigeria, the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas, NLNG, on Thursday, unveiled a new Neonatal Ward and a renovated Intensive Care Unit at the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Asaba, Delta State, marking another milestone in its Hospital Support Programme, HSP.

The upgraded FMC Asaba facility now boasts of world-class treatment areas, including neonatal and ICU suites, recovery rooms, prep zones, automated doors, a dedicated nurses’ station, and a family lounge, all tailored to accelerate emergency response, improve outcomes, and enhance care for Nigeria’s most vulnerable patients – the neo-natals.

Speaking at the commissioning, NLNG’s Managing Director and CEO, Philip Mshelbila, represented by Sophia Horsfall, General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development stated that NLNG’s investment in the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba and other hospitals in the country accurately reflected NLNG’s intentions expressed in its vision of being “a globally competitive energy company improving lives sustainably.”

Mshelbila emphasised that the HSP was part of NLNG’s broader nation-building agenda.

“We invest in people, not just infrastructure. Through education, health, and capacity-building, we are helping shape a sustainable future. The commissioning at FMC Asaba signals more than the completion of a project, it reflects a clear, steadfast vision: a healthcare system where Nigerian lives are preserved through precision, preparedness, and partnership.

READ ALSO: The Mokwa flood tragedy, By Kazeem Akintunde

“A single step into these wards in FMC, Asaba, reveals transformation with purpose. This is what it means to turn concern into action and statistics into lives saved. Nigeria contributes 20% of global maternal and child mortality. This must change, and we’re committed to that change,” he said.

Speaking during the ceremony, Minister of State for Health, Dr Iziaq Salako, commended NLNG for its contribution to health and urged other organisations to emulate the company.

The minister, represented by the Ministry’s Director of Hospital Services, Dr Jimoh Salaudeen, described the facility as another milestone in the quest for quality health services in line with the federal government’s renewed hope agenda.

In his remarks, Henry Obih, a member of NLNG’s Board of Directors, emphasised that the occasion reflected NLNG’s steadfast commitment to the well-being of the Nigerian people.

He noted further that through the NLNG HSP, critical infrastructure has been provided, offering immense benefits to families, newborns, ill infants, and to healthcare workers dedicated to delivering quality service.

Receiving the facilities, the Chief Medical Director of FMC Asaba, Dr Victor Osiatuma, thanked NLNG for selecting FMC Asaba as one of the benefitting institutions, through a transparent process devoid of lobbying.

The Hospital Support Programme, HSP, was NLNG’s strategic intervention in response to the urgent need for improved medical infrastructure during the COVID-19 crisis.

Approved by the NLNG Board in July 2021, the initiative set out to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system, starting with 12 federal university teaching hospitals across all six geopolitical zones and the FCT.

Nine health institutions in Nigeria have already achieved transformative upgrades in obstetrics, neonatal ICUs, occupational therapy, and neuromodulation rehabilitation through HSP.

NLNG continues to lead in the private sector’s contribution to nation-building, investing not only in energy but in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, because progress must be holistic to be sustainable.

The Federal Ministry of Education has condemned the incident involving candidates sitting the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, at night using torchlights.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, expressed his displeasure in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo.

Boriowo quoted the minister as outlining the situation captured in the widely circulated video as “completely unacceptable”, adding that all necessary measures would be taken to prevent a recurrence.

He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to ensuring a conducive environment for learning and assessment.

Alausa criticised the poor conditions under which the examination was conducted at Unity Secondary School in Asaba, Delta State, under the supervision of the state’ Ministry of Education.

“The ministry’s attention has been drawn to the conduct of an examination in an unsuitable environment, as seen in footage circulating on social media.

“This reveals an inappropriate setting for such a critical academic exercise, and it occurred under the oversight of the Delta State Ministry of Education.”

The minister stated that the ministry was working in collaboration with the Delta State government and the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, to investigate the matter and ensure appropriate corrective measures were taken.

“The outcome of the investigation will be made public as necessary,” he added.

Alausa reiterated his commitment to improving educational infrastructure and ensuring that students across the country had access to safe and enabling environments for teaching, learning, and assessment.
