Ogun State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has approved the construction of 12 blocks of 900 smart classrooms in four schools in each zone across the state.

The four benefiting schools are Abeokuta Grammar School, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta; Ijebu-Ode Grammar School, Ijebu-Ode; Remo Secondary School, Sagamu; and Yewa College, Ilaro.

The governor also approved Monday, October 6, 2024, as a work-free day to enable teachers to celebrate the day.

Governor Abiodun made the announcement at this year’s Teachers’ Day celebration held at the Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.

The governor also announced the absorption of 1,000 OgunTeach scheme interns into the State Teaching Service Commission, bringing the total to 5,000 since the inception of the administration.

Speaking further, the governor said approval had been given for the renovation of all special schools and an increment in the feeding allowance of pupils in special schools to make them feel a sense of belonging.

Abiodun, who acknowledged the contributions of teachers in moulding the character of future generations, agreed to pay transport allowances to all public school teachers in place of the work-free days currently being enjoyed by other state government workers.

While noting that his administration had repositioned the education sector to serve the people better, he listed the Ogun Digitalized Multimedia Lesson Plan, where teachers would be equipped with the necessary resources to deliver effectively with centralized and digitized lesson plans, and the construction of the Central Education Management Information System, EMIS, for data gathering, analysis, and presentation, as part of the achievements in the sector.

Other achievements, according to Governor Abiodun, include the approval for the Ogun State Education Intervention Fund, the successful conduct of the BECE with the introduction of OMR, Optical Mark Reader, sheets, and the installation of ICT facilities in preparation for the flag-off of Nigeria Learning Passport for e-contents.

On why his administration did not access the 2020 UBEC funds, the governor said: “You recall that when I assumed office, this state had not accessed the 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 funds. Shortly after I assumed office, we paid the counterpart funding for those four years, and we accessed the funding. The current one we are implementing is for 2018 and 2019.

READ ALSO: Tinubu confers GCON on House Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas

“What I noticed is that most of the contracts were abandoned because of inflation; the pricing was not realistic. That was my number one observation.

“My second observation was that despite all these interventions, every now and then, you would see an Ogun State school in the news. You would see Ogun State learners sitting on 9-inch blocks and learning in schools without roofs, despite the fact that we have accessed UBEC or SUBEB funding.

“I realized that something had to be wrong, and what was that? I realized that the schools that are being thrown up were not the worst of the worst schools.

“We put a hold on the programme, and I set up a task force headed by the Head of Service, and I mandated them to go around the nooks and crannies of the state and identify the worst of the worst schools so that we are no longer embarrassed.

“I am glad to tell you that the exercise has now been completed, and I had to personally call the UBEC Chairman and tell him that we had to rework our work plan, and that work plan has to reflect our peculiarities in Ogun State. We must not have schools that are not conducive for academic planning anymore.

“I am pleased to announce to you that the new work plan for UBEC that reflects our peculiarities has now been approved. So, two things we will be achieving: all the abandoned schools and abandoned projects from the 2018 and 2019 plans will now have a methodology for rewarding and completing them, and the 2020 work plan will now reflect the worst of the worst schools.”

While calling on all to reflect on the profound impact of education on individuals and the pivotal role of teachers in shaping not just the lives of children but the entire nation, the governor acknowledged the immense challenges in the teaching profession, noting, however, that despite the obstacles, teachers remain unwavering, ensuring that every child, regardless of background, has the chance to thrive.

“We believe that education is the bedrock of any meaningful socio-political and economic development, and teachers are the architects of that foundation. As Nelson Mandela rightly stated, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.’

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting educators through our ‘Building Our Future Together’ Agenda. Investing in education is an investment in the future of Ogun State. That is why we continue to improve teachers’ salaries, fund training programmes, and ensure that every classroom is well-equipped,” Governor Abiodun assured.

In his opening remarks, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, noted that the theme of this year’s celebration aligned with the administration’s policy of engendering a new social order not only in the education sector but the whole state, appreciating teachers for their steadfastness in discharging their duties and the state government for repositioning the education sector.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, ASUSS, Comrade Felix Agbesanwa, noted that the Dapo Abiodun-led administration has been mindful of teachers’ welfare through regular payment of salaries, promotions, and both foreign and local training for teachers.

He appreciated the present administration for recruiting more teachers through the OgunTeach scheme, renovating schools, and bringing sanity to the schools through the signing of undertakings by parents and students.

The chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, in the state, Comrade Sewakanu Oladipupo, said the day was set aside by the United Nations to celebrate the immense contributions of teachers in nation-building, adding that despite the present economic crunch, the administration had made the welfare of teachers and the education sector a priority.

The chairman of the Teaching Service Commission, TESCOM, Evangelist Lekan Ifede, in his goodwill message, described Ogun teachers as the best in the country, while his counterpart from the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Dr. Femi Majekodunmi, lauded Governor Abiodun for investing heavily in the education sector over the last five years, which has shown in the performance of learners in various examinations and other academic activities.

Highlights of the celebration included the awarding of cash prizes to teachers, schools, and administrators who performed excellently in the previous academic year.

It was excitement and praise galore as the Ogun State Government on Wednesday flagged off the payment of N10,000 cash award to 100,000 primary and secondary school learners in the over 2, 000 public schools across the four divisions of the state.

The payment is in fulfilment of the promise made by the governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, to pay N10,000 to indigent pupils and students in the state’s primary and secondary schools.

Speaking while monitoring the disbursement of the money in some schools in Abeokuta, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, noted that the payment was one of the strategies used by the governor to provide succour to parents as a result of the present economic situation in the country.

Arigbabu noted that the gesture was meant to provide succour to pupils and their parents.

He said: “In view of the economic realities in the country, the governor decided to provide succour to the people of the state using multiplicity approaches to achieve this.

“He believes that another strategy that could be used which has never been used by any government before is the health and education sectors to reach the populace. Through the education sector, you can truly reach out to those who need the palliative.

“We have over 2, 000 primary and secondary schools in all the four divisions of the state, and 100,000 learners in these schools would receive N10,00 each.”

He emphasized that the government decided to pay through parents whose children are in public primary and secondary schools as the children do not have bank accounts due to their age.

“As we meet and give the parents the governor’s message, they are receiving the alert for payment. The governor’s gesture is to support the parents in meeting their children’s needs,” he added.

On how the children were chosen, the commissioner maintained that the process was objective, adding that it was easy to come up with the list of indigent students as teachers who are part of the school system were given the burden to find the indigent students as they are the closest to them.

“That is why we have not involved anybody who is not in the school system. The school system is not political. Civil servants are not supposed to be politicians, so the principals and the teachers have selected these children based on the fact that they have always seen them to be indigent students.

“How do they know them? These are children without shoes, some of them have torn uniforms, some don’t have enough exercise books, and some can’t even buy textbooks. There are a number of things they would have seen, some of them, it is these teachers that will be contributing money to the support system.

“I can assure you that the children we have chosen are children that are indigent. To confirm that for you, a parent came to me, she said that her child in this school was chosen, but she has another child in another school that was not chosen. That is telling you that indigency is relative,” he said.

He disclosed that 50,000 students of Ogun State origin in both public and private tertiary institutions had been captured to be paid N50,000 each.

The payment, he said, had started with about 20,000 students to be covered by the end of the week.

“In the tertiary level, we are giving out N50,000 to each student. We have captured 50,000 students from all the tertiary institutions whose details have been submitted to us after we wrote to the Vice Chancellors, Rectors and Provosts.

READ ALSO: Nigeria opens land, air borders with Niger, lifts other sanctions

“We are paying directly to the students to ensure that the money get to them. We started payment last week, and we have paid over 10,000 students, and before the end of this week, we would have paid 20,000,” the commissioner assured.

Arigbabu also revealed that five exercise books would be given to 850,000 primary and secondary school learners, including those who did not benefit from the N10,000, adding that the governor was also preparing another package for the education sector.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, who also monitored the disbursement exercise, opined that money would make a difference in the lives of those who really needed it, noting that those who had received their alert had promised to make judicious use of it.

Speaking in an interview, the Principal, Baptist Boys High School (Junior), Lasabi Olarenwaju, noted that some of the beneficiaries were chosen based on the inability of their parents to cater for their basic needs, adding that the gesture by Governor Dapo Abiodun would go a long way in helping the beneficiaries.

About 60,000 students of Ogun State origin in all tertiary institutions of learning in the country will benefit from the ongoing N50,000 palliative of the state government.

Tagged Educational Cash Award For Student Help, OgunEduCASH, it is an intervention programme for learners in all public primary and secondary schools, as well as public and private tertiary institutions across Nigeria, to cushion the effects of the current economic challenges on learners and their parents.

It was announced in February by Governor Dapo Abiodun as part of the state’s palliative measures.

Each student of Ogun State origin is entitled to N50,000 cash from the state government.

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, said that students in public and private tertiary institutions would benefit from the cash award.

Arigbabu also said that the state government was targeting 10,000 indigent students in public primary and secondary schools in the three senatorial districts to get N10,000 cash too.

Meanwhile, some students who spoke to journalists confirmed receiving the N50,000, even as they showered encomium on the governor for the gesture.

Aminat Asaye, Tomiwa Iteoluwa (HND 2, Mass Communication); Ogunjobi and Olujomehin Ebudola (HND 2, Accountancy) and Rokeeb Ayinla (ND 2, Marketing), all of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, appreciated Governor Abiodun for the gesture, saying the money would go a long way in their educational pursuits as beneficiaries.

Also expressing their gratitude to the governor, Adebayo Farouq and Olatinuke Olajumoke (HND 2, Computer Science), and Liadi Israel (ND 2, Computer Science), of D.S Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, submitted that the cash awards would cater for their projects and support the part payment of their tuition fees.

Adewale Oyenekan, Rebecca Akinfenwa, Leduwe Ayomide, Toheeb Adesina, and David Dosunmu of the Federal College of Education, Osiele, described Governor Abiodun as compassionate, tender-hearted, generous, and student-loving father, saying the money received was an indication of his passion for individual prosperity for the citizens of the state.

Ogun State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has instituted a scholarship award scheme for 550 indigent students in Remo Federal Constituency of the state in honour of his late son, Gbemiga Abiodun, who died six years ago.

The scholarships cover pupils in primary and secondary schools as well as those in vocational and tertiary institutions.

The scholarship was spread across all schools in its coverage area.

Speaking at the launch of the Gbemiga Abiodun Education Scholarship Award held at Iperu, Ikenne local government area, Abiodun said the scheme would ensure that brilliant students and those whose parents could not afford to educate them, had access to quality education.

According to him, the number of beneficiaries would increase to 1000 in the next 12 months, which would be the minimum at any given time.

He also promised that the scholarship would be extended to the other federal constituencies in the state for maximum spread.

He said: “It is against this backdrop that my family came up with a scholarship scheme called ‘Gbemiga Abiodun Memorial Scholarship Award’, in memory of our son, Gbemiga Abiodun, which is strictly for indigent learners of Public Primary, Secondary Schools, Technical College and Tertiary Institutions, as well as Special Needs Learners within Ikenne, Remo North, and Sagamu Local Government Areas, to provide support to selected learners who are from the aforementioned local government areas of Ogun State.

“The Award is in two phases. The first phase is to be a Scholarship Award, designed for indigent and brilliant students while its alternative form; the second phase will be a Bursary Award for in-need but not necessarily brilliant indigent students whose chances of upward socio-economic mobility are probable with bursary support.

“This Scholarship award is designed for a period of three (3) years and within the age bracket of 6-25, and selection will be determined by the State Ministry of Education Science and Technology, using the Cumulative Promotion Examination Result obtainable from the OGSERA platform while the beneficiaries for tertiary institutions were recommended by their respective institutions.”

The governor described education as the only light to the future of prosperity, development and peaceful co-existence, noting that the programme was conceived to celebrate the impactful and eventful life of Gbemiga Abiodun and all that he stood for while alive, adding the deceased lived a life of selflessness, consistency and scholarship.

“Olu, beyond his popular chosen career as a Disc Jockey had an unwavering passion for sound education, which he pursued passionately till God called him to be with him on that fateful day of 7th October, 2017.

“It is instructive to know that Olu’s chosen career as a Disc Jockey was a product of his innate passion for music and rhythms at a very tender age; the passion he consistently pursued to the apogee,” the governor added.

Dapo Abiodun who decried the low enrolment of girls in male dominated trades in Technical Colleges and Vocational Centres compared to boys, also regretted that despite the free education policy of his administration and students in higher institutions paying less, many basic school completers are hindered from proceeding beyond junior or secondary schools and acquiring tertiary education.

He called on the beneficiaries to make the best of the scheme to better their lots, saying it was the best way his family would keep the memory of the deceased alive.

In her opening remarks, the wife of the governor, Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun, said the scheme was to impact on the lives of the beneficiaries and their parents, especially at these trying times, expressing the hope that the scheme would achieve the purpose of bringing succour to the benefiting families.

Giving a brief on the scheme, the Special Adviser to the governor on Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, said scholarship was being sponsored entirely by the Dapo Abiodun family.

He explained that 200 learners from public primary schools would receive the sum of N50,000 each, to take care of their educational materials, 200 students from public secondary schools would get N100,000 for their educational materials, while100 students in tertiary institutions would be paid N250,000 each to take care of their educational needs.

Arigbabu explained further that a dedicated account would be open for beneficiaries in the primary and secondary schools to be disbursed by their head teachers and principals, while those in tertiary institutions would receive theirs personally.

Ogun State government has reiterated its determination towards ensuring a conducive and safe learning environment for students across the state.

To that effect, it has constituted a committee to conduct integrity tests on various school infrastructures.

Speaking during the inspection of a collapsed building at Agbado District Comprehensive High School, Ifo, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, who led the team from the Education and Housing ministries said the governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, had earlier directed that a formidable committee be put in place to cater for school maintenance and rehabilitation.

Arigbabu said the committee would quickly move around the schools across the state to carefully evaluate the viability of the existing structures to ascertain the possibility of usage alongside the newly rehabilitated and constructed ones.

READ ALSO: How proprietors can keep schools safe, secure -Experts

He noted that the construction of the collapsed eight-classroom building started in 2007 and had not been put into use because the present administration in the state could not guarantee its desirability for usage.

Arigbabu, therefore, gave assurance that the present administration in the state would not entrust its projects into the hands of any contractors without the requisite capacity to meet up with the standard required by the government.

He said: ”The incident happened on Saturday and there was no casualty of any sort. There would be quick intervention soon to replace the collapsed structure.

“We are setting up a technical committee to quickly ascertain the viability of similar structures in our schools which we inherited and still meticulously working to confirm their desirability for usage because we are so conscious about the safety of our children and would stop at nothing to protect them and make them comfortable in the course of learning.

“I appreciate the school management and the entire staff for being diligent, hardworking and supportive.”

In his reaction, the Principal of Agbado District Comprehensive High School, Junior, Mr Ayodeji Ogunleye, applauded the two ministries for the quick response, promising to do all within their capacity to maintain school infrastructure.

Parents of students in public secondary schools in Ogun State are to start signing undertakings on behalf of their wards to curb unruly conducts in schools.

Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, the State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, disclosed this on Friday before members of the Ogun House of Assembly Committee on Finance and Appropriation in Abeokuta.

The commissioner was before the house to defend the ministry’s 2022 budget.

Arigbabu added that the development, as part of measures to curb disturbing trends such as hooliganism and cultism would ensure peace, both within and outside the school environments.

He assured that government had redoubled its efforts in ensuring that the menace was nipped in the bud.

According to him, stakeholders including parents, teachers and security agents had come up with different approaches that would holistically address emerging misconducts among students.

He explained that a School-Based Management Committee was being put in place to serve as interdisciplinary source to track and report any act inimical to peace within the school environments.

The commissioner said the ministry was equally reviving sporting activities to further engage pupils in extra-curriculum activities, in addition to the resuscitation of moral teaching during morning devotions.

He stated further that the ministry would further empower secondary school principals and strengthen the school-based management committee toward profiling all pupils in the schools to weed off the bad eggs.

Defending the ministry’s proposal for 2022, Arigbabu presented a total of N6.094 billion as the total expenditure for 2022.

He said it consisted of N3.129 billion for capital expenditure and N2.96 billion for recurrent expenditure, just as its revenue target was fixed at N2.28 billion.

He explained that the ministry would also be constructing 60 units of a block of three classrooms and 49 units of a block of 2 classrooms.

In addition to the classrooms, he said eight units of technical workshops/science laboratories would be constructed with some public schools rehabilitated across the state.
